The C₂–H on imidazolium ring mainly interacted with the hydroxyl group of TEG, and the EmimCl–TEG DESs have a high SO₂ absorption capacity.

Influence of the alkyl side-chain length on the ultrafast vibrational dynamics of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide (CnmimNTf2) ionic liquids

Probing the vibrational dynamics of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide (C_nmimNTf₂) ionic liquids (ILs) using femtosecond time-resolved coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (fs-CARS) has indicated the ultrafast vibrational energy transfer between counter ions which is governed by interionic interactions and facilitated by hydrogen bonds. In this study, fs-CARS is used to investigate the ultrafast dynamics of the vibrational modes of the C_nmimNTf₂ ILs with n = 6, 8, 10, and 12 in a spectral region, which involves the imidazolium ring and the alkyl side-chain vibrations. The vibrational Raman modes with wavenumbers around 1418 cm^-1 are excited through the CARS process and the ultrafast time evolution of the consequently excited vibrational modes is monitored. The investigation of the life times of the fs-CARS transient signals indicates that the time scale of the dynamics becomes much faster when the alkyl side-chain length of the C_nmimNTf₂ is longer than n = 8. This observation suggests an increase in the hydrogen bonding interactions due to the nano-structuring of the ionic liquids, which became evident with an increasing length of the alkyl side-chain. This behavior is also found in molecular dynamics simulations. There, an increase of the oxygen density around the C(2)-H moiety of the imidazolium ring, which is the predominant site for hydrogen bond formation, is observed. In other words, the longer the alkyl side-chain, the more reorganization of the ionic liquid into polar and non-polar domains occurs and the higher the probability of finding interionic hydrogen bonds at the C(2)-H position becomes.

Vibrational Spectroscopy of Ionic Liquids

Vibrational spectroscopy has continued use as a powerful tool to characterize ionic liquids since the literature on room temperature molten salts experienced the rapid increase in number of publications in the 1990's. In the past years, infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopies have provided insights on ionic interactions and the resulting liquid structure in ionic liquids. A large body of information is now available concerning vibrational spectra of ionic liquids made of many different combinations of anions and cations, but reviews on this literature are scarce. This review is an attempt at filling this gap. Some basic care needed while recording IR or Raman spectra of ionic liquids is explained. We have reviewed the conceptual basis of theoretical frameworks which have been used to interpret vibrational spectra of ionic liquids, helping the reader to distinguish the scope of application of different methods of calculation. Vibrational frequencies observed in IR and Raman spectra of ionic liquids based on different anions and cations are discussed and eventual disagreements between different sources are critically reviewed. The aim is that the reader can use this information while assigning vibrational spectra of an ionic liquid containing another particular combination of anions and cations. Different applications of IR and Raman spectroscopies are given for both pure ionic liquids and solutions. Further issues addressed in this review are the intermolecular vibrations that are more directly probed by the low-frequency range of IR and Raman spectra and the applications of vibrational spectroscopy in studying phase transitions of ionic liquids.

We have identified three families of conformers in gas phase ion pairs of [emim][tf2n] using IR/UV spectroscopy.

Applicability of the Caldeira-Leggett Model to Vibrational Spectroscopy in Solution

Formulating a rigorous system-bath partitioning approach remains an open issue. In this context, the famous Caldeira-Leggett model that enables quantum and classical treatment of Brownian motion on equal footing has enjoyed popularity. Although this model is by any means a useful theoretical tool, its ability to describe anharmonic dynamics of real systems is often taken for granted. In this Letter, we show that the mapping between a molecular system under study and the model cannot be established in a self-consistent way, unless the system part of the potential is taken effectively harmonic. Mathematically, this implies that the mapping is not invertible. This "invertibility problem" is not dependent on the peculiarities of particular molecular systems and is rooted in the anharmonicity of the system part of the Caldeira-Leggett model potential.
