Noncovalent Interaction of Graphene with Heterocyclic Compounds: Benzene, Imidazole, Tetracene, and Imidazophenazines

How does tuning the van der Waals bonding strength affect adsorbate structure?

Organic molecular thin-films are employed for manufacturing a wide variety of electronic devices, including memory devices and transistors. A precise description of the atomic-scale interactions in aromatic carbon systems is of paramount importance for the design of organic thin-films and carbon-based nanomaterials. Here we investigate the binding and structure of pyrazine on graphite with neutron diffraction and spin-echo measurements. Diffraction data of the ordered phase of deuterated pyrazine, (C₄D₄N₂), adsorbed on the graphite (0001) basal plane surface are compared to scattering simulations and complemented by van der Waals corrected density functional theory calculations. The lattice constant of pyrazine on graphite is found to be (6.06 ± 0.02) Å. Compared to benzene (C₆D₆) adsorption on graphite, the pyrazine overlayer appears to be much more thermodynamically stable, up to 320 K, and continues in layer-by-layer growth. Both findings suggest a direct correlation between the intensity of van der Waals bonding and the stability of the self-assembled overlayer because the nitrogen atoms in the six-membered ring of pyrazine increase the van der Waals bonding in comparison to benzene, which only contains carbon atoms.

Review of research of nanocomposites based on graphene quantum dots

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) belong to the vast and versatile family of carbon nanomaterials. Their unique position amongst versatile carbon nanoparticles (NPs) originates from the properties of quantum confinement and edge effects. GQDs are similar to conventional semiconductor QDs due to their tunable band gaps and high photoluminescence activity. However, GQDs have superior characteristics due to their excellent biocompatibility, low toxicity, good water dispersibility, large optical absorptivity, high fluorescence activity and photostability. These properties have generated significant interest in GQDs applications in various fields: nanosensor fabrication, drug delivery, photocatalysis, photovoltaics, and photodynamic therapy. Numerous GQD-based nanocomposites/nanohybrides have been synthesized and/or studied computationally. This review focuses on recent computational studies of various GQD-based nanocomposites/nanohybrides and systems which can be related to them.

Ab initio study for superior sensitivity of graphyne nanoflake towards nitrogen halides over ammonia

Graphyne (GYN) has received immense attention in gas adsorption applications due to its large surface area. The adsorption of toxic ammonia and nitrogen halides gaseous molecules on graphyne has been theoretically studied at ωB97XD/6-31 + G(d, p) level of DFT. The counterpoise corrected interaction energies of NH₃, NF₃, NCl₃, and NBr₃ molecules with GYN are - 4.73, - 2.27, - 5.22, and - 7.19 kcal mol^-1, respectively. Symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT0) and noncovalent interaction index (NCI) reveal that the noncovalent interaction between analytes and GYN is dominated by dispersion forces. The significant change in electronic behavior, i.e., energies of HOMO and LUMO orbitals and NBO charge transfer correspond to the pronounced sensitivity of GYN towards considered analytes, especially NBr₃. Finally, TD-DFT calculation reveals a decrease in electronic transition energies and shifting of adsorption to a longer wavelength. The recovery time for NX₃@GYN is observed in nanoseconds, which is many orders of magnitude smaller than the reported systems. The recovery time is further decreased with increasing temperature, indicating that the GYN benefits from a short recovery time as a chemical sensor.

Enhanced Thermopower of Saturated Molecules by Noncovalent Anchor-Induced Electron Doping of Single-Layer Graphene Electrode

Enhancing thermopower is a key goal in organic and molecular thermoelectrics. Herein, it is shown that introducing noncovalent contact with a single-layer graphene (SLG) electrode improves the thermopower of saturated molecules as compared to the traditional gold-thiolate covalent contact. Thermoelectric junction measurements with a liquid-metal technique reveal that the value of Seebeck coefficient in large-area junctions based on n-alkylamine self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on SLG is increased up to fivefold compared to the analogous junction based on n-alkanethiolate SAMs on gold. Experiments with Raman spectroscopy and field-effect transistor analysis indicate that such enhancements benefit from the creation of new in-gap states and electron doping through noncovalent interaction between the amine anchor and the SLG electrode, which leads to a reduced energy offset between the Fermi level and the transport channel. This work demonstrates that control of interfacial bonding nature in molecular junctions improves the Seebeck effect in saturated molecules.

Extraordinary Photostability and Davydov Splitting in BN-Sandwiched Single-Layer Tetracene Molecular Crystals

Two-dimensional molecular crystals have been beyond the reach of systematic investigation because of the lack or instability of their well-defined forms. Here, we demonstrate drastically enhanced photostability and Davydov splitting in single and few-layer tetracene (Tc) crystals sandwiched between inorganic 2D crystals of graphene or hexagonal BN. Molecular orientation and long-range order mapped with polarized wide-field photoluminescence imaging and optical second-harmonic generation revealed high crystallinity of the 2D Tc and its distinctive orientational registry with the 2D inorganic crystals, which were also verified with first-principles calculations. The reduced dielectric screening in 2D space was manifested by enlarged Davydov splitting and attenuated vibronic sidebands in the excitonic absorption and emission of monolayer Tc crystals. Photostable 2D molecular crystals and their size effects will lead to novel photophysical principles and photonic applications.

Density Functional Study on the Adsorption of 5-Membered N-Heterocycles on B/N/BN-Doped Graphene: Coronene as a Model System

Adsorption of seven 5-membered N-heterocycles on B/N/BN-doped graphene (with coronene as a model system) has been studied using density functional theory (DFT). The geometry of the complexes validated the involvement of both π···π stacking and N-H···π interaction in the adsorption process. The stability of the complexes is measured in terms of stabilization energy, and the results suggested that the complexes are stable enough (stabilization energies are in the range of 7.61-14.77 kcal mol^-1). Studies confirmed the stability of complexes in the solvent phase too irrespective of the dielectric of the solvent. Dispersive force is the major mode of interaction in stabilizing the complexes. Natural bond orbital analysis indicated a small contribution from electrostatic and covalent interactions. Thermochemical analysis revealed that the complexation is exothermic in nature and favorable at a lower temperature. Adsorption of N-heterocycles exerts a nominal impact on the electronic properties of the undoped/doped graphene. The study presents a simple approach to introduce an arbitrary functionality to undoped/doped graphene by preserving its electronic properties.
