Vibrational Frequencies of Cerium-Oxide-Bound CO: A Challenge for Conventional DFT Methods

In ceria-based catalysis, the shape of the catalyst particle, which determines the exposed crystal facets, profoundly affects its reactivity. The vibrational frequency of adsorbed carbon monoxide (CO) can be used as a sensitive probe to identify the exposed surface facets, provided reference data on well-defined single crystal surfaces together with a definitive theoretical assignment exist. We investigate the adsorption of CO on the CeO_{2}(110) and (111) surfaces and show that the commonly applied DFT(PBE)+U method does not provide reliable CO vibrational frequencies by comparing with state-of-the-art infrared spectroscopy experiments for monocrystalline CeO_{2} surfaces. Good agreement requires the hybrid DFT approach with the HSE06 functional. The failure of conventional density-functional theory (DFT) is explained in terms of its inability to accurately describe the facet- and configuration-specific donation and backdonation effects that control the changes in the C─O bond length upon CO adsorption and the CO force constant. Our findings thus provide a theoretical basis for the detailed interpretation of experiments and open up the path to characterize more complex scenarios, including oxygen vacancies and metal adatoms.

Anharmonic calculations of vibrational spectra for molecular adsorbates: A divide-and-conquer semiclassical molecular dynamics approach

The vibrational spectroscopy of adsorbates is becoming an important investigation tool for catalysis and material science. This paper presents a semiclassical molecular dynamics method able to reproduce the vibrational energy levels of systems composed by molecules adsorbed on solid surfaces. Specifically, we extend our divide-and-conquer semiclassical method for power spectra calculations to gas-surface systems and interface it with plane-wave electronic structure codes. The Born-Oppenheimer classical dynamics underlying the semiclassical calculation is full dimensional, and our method includes not only the motion of the adsorbate but also those of the surface and the bulk. The vibrational spectroscopic peaks related to the adsorbate are accounted together with the most coupled phonon modes to obtain spectra amenable to physical interpretations. We apply the method to the adsorption of CO, NO, and H₂O on the anatase-TiO₂ (101) surface. We compare our semiclassical results with the single-point harmonic estimates and the classical power spectra obtained from the same trajectory employed in the semiclassical calculation. We find that CO and NO anharmonic effects of fundamental vibrations are similarly reproduced by the classical and semiclassical dynamics and that H₂O adsorption is fully and properly described in its overtone and combination band relevant components only by the semiclassical approach.

The Case of Formic Acid on Anatase TiO2 (101): Where is the Acid Proton?

Carboxylic-acid adsorption on anatase TiO₂ is a relevant process in many technological applications. Yet, despite several decades of investigations, the acid-proton localization-either on the molecule or on the surface-is still an open issue. By modeling the adsorption of formic acid on top of anatase(101) surfaces, we highlight the formation of a short strong hydrogen bond. In the 0 K limit, the acid-proton behavior is ruled by quantum delocalization effects in a single potential well, while at ambient conditions, the proton undergoes a rapid classical shuttling in a shallow two-well free-energy profile. This picture, supported by agreement with available experiments, shows that the anatase surface acts like a protecting group for the carboxylic acid functionality. Such a new conceptual insight might help rationalize chemical processes involving carboxylic acids on oxide surfaces.

Water in zeolite L and its MOF mimic

Confinement of molecules in one dimensional arrays of channel-shaped cavities has led to technologically interesting materials. However, the interactions governing the supramolecular aggregates still remain obscure, even for the most common guest molecule: water. Herein, we use computational chemistry methods (#compchem) to study the water organization inside two different channel-type environments: zeolite L – a widely used matrix for inclusion of dye molecules, and ZLMOF – the closest metal-organic-framework mimic of zeolite L. In ZLMOF, the methyl groups of the ligands protrude inside the channels, creating nearly isolated nanocavities. These cavities host well-separated ring-shaped clusters of water molecules, dominated mainly by water-water hydrogen bonds. ZLMOF provides arrays of “isolated supramolecule” environments, which might be exploited for the individual confinement of small species with interesting optical or catalytic properties. In contrast, the one dimensional channels of zeolite L contain a continuous supramolecular structure, governed by the water interactions with potassium cations and by water-water hydrogen bonds. Water imparts a significant energetic stabilization to both materials, which increases with the water content in ZLMOF and follows the opposite trend in zeolite L. The water network in zeolite L contains an intriguing hypercoordinated structure, where a water molecule is surrounded by five strong hydrogen bonds. Such a structure, here described for the first time in zeolites, can be considered as a water pre-dissociation complex and might explain the experimentally detected high proton activity in zeolite L nanochannels.

Few-Layer MoS₂ Nanodomains Decorating TiO₂ Nanoparticles: A Case Study for the Photodegradation of Carbamazepine

S-doped TiO₂ and hybrid MoS₂/TiO₂ systems have been synthesized, via the sulfidation with H₂S of the bare TiO₂ and of MoO_x supported on TiO₂ systems, with the aim of enhancing the photocatalytic properties of TiO₂ for the degradation of carbamazepine, an anticonvulsant drug, whose residues and metabolites are usually inefficiently removed in wastewater treatment plants. The focus of this study is to find a relationship between the morphology/structure/surface properties and photoactivity. The full characterization of samples reveals the strong effects of the H₂S action on the properties of TiO₂, with the formation of defects at the surface, as shown by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and infrared spectroscopy (IR), while also the optical properties are strongly affected by the sulfidation treatment, with changes in the electronic states of TiO₂. Meanwhile, the formation of small and thin few-layer MoS₂ domains, decorating the TiO₂ surface, is evidenced by both high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and UV-Vis/Raman spectroscopies, while Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra give insights into the nature of Ti and Mo surface sites. The most interesting findings of our research are the enhanced photoactivity of the MoS₂/TiO₂ hybrid photocatalyst toward the carbamazepine mineralization. Surprisingly, the formation of hazardous compounds (i.e., acridine derivatives), usually obtained from carbamazepine, is precluded when treated with MoS₂/TiO₂ systems.

Quantum tunneling injection of hot electrons in Au/TiO2 plasmonic photocatalysts

Visible light absorption of plasmonic Au nanoparticles supported on semiconductor TiO₂ leads to injection of their photoactivated "hot electrons (e_hot^-)" into the TiO₂ conduction band. This charge separation facilitates several oxidation and reduction reactions. These plasmonic systems, however, suffer from low quantum yields because the Schottky barrier created at the Au-TiO₂ interface suppresses e_hot^- injection. Here we report that Au nanoparticles supported on the anatase particles isolated from Degussa (Evonik) P25 TiO₂ promote e_hot^- injection with much higher efficiency than those supported on other commercially-available TiO₂ and catalyze aerobic oxidation with very high quantum yield (7.7% at 550 nm). Photoelectrochemical and spectroscopic analysis revealed that the number of Ti⁴⁺ atoms located at the Au-TiO₂ interface is the crucial factor. These Ti⁴⁺ atoms neutralize the negative charge of the Au particles and create a Schottky barrier with narrower depletion layer. This facilitates efficient e_hot^- injection by "quantum tunneling" through the Schottky barrier without overbarrier energy. The e_hot^- injection depends on several factors, and loading of 2 wt% Au particles with 3.5-4 nm diameters at around room temperature exhibits the highest activity of plasmonic photocatalysis.

Photoemission Fingerprints for Structural Identification of Titanium Dioxide Surfaces

The wealth of properties of titanium dioxide relies on its various polymorphs and on their mixtures coupled with a sensitivity to crystallographic orientations. It is therefore pivotal to set out methods that allow surface structural identification. We demonstrate herein the ability of photoemission spectroscopy to provide Ti LMV (V = valence) Auger templates to quantitatively analyze TiO2 polymorphs. The Ti LMV decay reflects Ti 4sp-O 2p hybridizations that are intrinsic properties of TiO2 phases and orientations. Ti LMV templates collected on rutile (110), anatase (101), and (100) single crystals allow for the quantitative analysis of mixed nanosized powders, which bridges the gap between surfaces of reference and complex materials. As a test bed, the anatase/rutile P25 is studied both as received and during the anatase-to-rutile transformation upon annealing. The agreement with X-ray diffraction measurements proves the reliability of the Auger analysis and highlights its ability to detect surface orientations.
