Highly Sensitive Upconverting Nanoplatform for Luminescent Thermometry from Ambient to Cryogenic Temperature

Self-optimized single-nanowire photoluminescence thermometry

Nanomaterials-based photoluminescence thermometry (PLT) is a new contact-free photonic approach for temperature sensing, important for applications ranging from quantum technology to biomedical imaging and diagnostics. Even though numerous new materials have been explored, great challenges and deficiencies remain that hamper many applications. In contrast to most of the existing approaches that use large ensembles of rare-earth-doped nanomaterials with large volumes and unavoidable inhomogeneity, we demonstrate the ultimate size reduction and simplicity of PLT by using only a single erbium-chloride-silicate (ECS) nanowire. Importantly, we propose and demonstrate a novel strategy that contains a self-optimization or "smart" procedure to automatically identify the best PL intensity ratio for temperature sensing. The automated procedure is used to self-optimize key sensing metrics, such as sensitivity, precision, or resolution to achieve an all-around superior PLT including several record-setting metrics including the first sensitivity exceeding 100% K^-1 (~138% K^-1), the highest resolution of 0.01 K, and the largest range of sensible temperatures 4-500 K operating completely within 1500-1800 nm (an important biological window). The high-quality ECS nanowire enables the use of well-resolved Stark-sublevels to construct a series of PL intensity ratios for optimization in infrared, allowing the completely Boltzmann-based sensing at cryogenic temperature for the first time. Our single-nanowire PLT and the proposed optimization strategy overcome many existing challenges and could fundamentally impact PL nano-thermometry and related applications such as single-cell thermometry.

Ratiometric upconversion luminescence nanoprobes from construction to sensing, imaging, and phototherapeutics

In terms of the combined advantages of upconversion luminescence (UCL) properties and dual-signal ratiometric outputs toward specific targets, the ratiometric UCL nanoprobes exhibit significant applications. This review summarizes and discusses the recent advances in ratiometric UCL nanoprobes, mainly including the construction of nanoprobe systems for sensing, imaging, and phototherapeutics. First, the construction strategies are introduced, involving different types of nanoprobe systems, construction methods, and ratiometric dual-signal modes. Then, the sensing applications are summarized, involving types of targets, sensing mechanisms, sensing targets, and naked-eye visual detection of UCL colors. Afterward, the phototherapeutic applications are discussed, including bio-toxicity, bio-distribution, biosensing, and bioimaging at the level of living cells and small animals, and biomedicine therapy. Particularly, each section is commented on by discussing the state-of-the-art relevant studies on ratiometric UCL nanoprobe systems. Moreover, the current status, challenges, and perspectives in the forthcoming studies are discussed. This review facilitates the exploration of functionally luminescent nanoprobes for excellent sensing, imaging, biomedicine, and multiple applications in significant fields.

Lanthanide-Doped Luminescent Nanophosphors via Ionic Liquids

Lanthanide (Ln3+) ion(s)-doped or rare-earth ion(s)-doped nanomaterials have been considered a very important class of nanophosphors for various photonic and biophotonic applications. Unlike semiconductors and organic-based luminescent particles, the optical properties of Ln3+-doped nanophosphors are independent of the size of the nanoparticles. However, by varying the crystal phase, morphology, and lattice strain of the host materials along with making core-shell structure, the relaxation dynamics of dopant Ln3+ ions can be effectively tuned. Interestingly, a judicious choice of dopant ions leads to unparallel photophysical dynamics, such as quantum cutting, upconversion, and energy transfer. Recently, ionic liquids (ILs) have drawn tremendous attention in the field of nanomaterials synthesis due to their unique properties like negligible vapor pressure, nonflammability, and, most importantly, tunability; thus, they are often called "green" and "designer" solvents. This review article provides a critical overview of the latest developments in the ILs-assisted synthesis of rare-earth-doped nanomaterials and their subsequent photonic/biophotonic applications, such as energy-efficient lighting and solar cell applications, photodynamic therapy, and in vivo and in vitro bioimaging. This article will emphasize how luminescence dynamics of dopant rare-earth ions can be tuned by changing the basic properties of the host materials like crystal phase, morphology, and lattice strain, which can be eventually tuned by various properties of ILs such as cation/anion combination, alkyl chain length, and viscosity. Last but not least, different aspects of ILs like their ability to act as templating agents, solvents, and reaction partners and sometimes their "three-in-one" use in nanomaterials synthesis are highlighted along with various photoluminescence mechanisms of Ln3+ ion like up- and downconversion (UC and DC).
