Group 12 Carbonates and their Binary Complexes with Nitrogen Bases and FH2 Z Molecules (Z=P, As, Sb): Synergism in Forming Ternary Complexes

Spodium Bonding to Dicoordinated Group 12 Atoms

DFT calculations consider the interactions between linear MR2 and a series of N-bases, where M is Hg or Zn and its R substituents are CCH, CN, or NO2. NCH, NH3, and NMe3 were considered as three different N-bases. Zn forms stronger bonds with the N bases than does Hg, and they strengthen along with the electron-withdrawing power of the R substituent, varying over a wide range from 3.4 to 43.9 kcal/mol. Another factor contributing to the bond strength is the nucleophilicity of the base: NCH < NH3 < NMe3. All MR2 Lewis acids can bind at least two bases, which are situated along the R-M-R bisecting plane, fairly close to one another, with θ(N-M-N) angles between 67° and 117°. The presence of a more electron-withdrawing substituent R and more powerful nucleophile allows up to 4 bases to bind to M. The properties of these bonds place them along a continuum, some clearly noncovalent, while other contain a good deal of covalent character.

Properties and Stabilities of Cyclic and Open Chains of Halogen Bonds

Open and cyclic chains from two to eight units of ICl and IF are constructed and examined by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. These chains contain either I···I or I···X halogen bonds (XBs) where X refers to Cl or F. The closed rings are more stable than the open chains due to the presence of an additional XB and enhanced cooperativity. This pattern is true even for most trimers where there is sizable geometric distortion in the rings. I···F rings are generally more stable than the corresponding I···I cycles as the I···F bond is stronger than I···I even in the simple dimer. However, I···I rings are comparable in energy to I···Cl. It is possible to construct I···I rings of at least as large as eight units, which are held together exclusively by XBs. On the other hand, the maximum possible size of I···X rings is 6. Red shifts are observed in the I-X stretching frequency bands, which magnify as the chain, both cyclic and open, grows longer. The NMR chemical shielding of the I atoms increases for I···I chains but diminishes when I···Cl bonds are present.

Insight into Spodium–π Bonding Characteristics of the MX2···π (M = Zn, Cd and Hg; X = Cl, Br and I) Complexes—A Theoretical Study

The spodium–π bonding between MX₂ (M = Zn, Cd, and Hg; X = Cl, Br, and I) acting as a Lewis acid, and C₂H₂/C₂H₄ acting as a Lewis base was studied by ab initio calculations. Two types of structures of cross (T) and parallel (P) forms are obtained. For the T form, the X–M–X axis adopts a cross configuration with the molecular axis of C≡C or C=C, but both of them are parallel in the P form. NCI, AIM, and electron density shifts analyses further, indicating that the spodium–π bonding exists in the binary complexes. Spodium–π bonding exhibits a partially covalent nature characterized with a negative energy density and large interaction energy. With the increase of electronegativity of the substituents on the Lewis acid or its decrease in the Lewis base, the interaction energies increase and vice versa. The spodium–π interaction is dominated by electrostatic interaction in most complexes, whereas dispersion and electrostatic energies are responsible for the stability of the MX₂⋯C₂F₂ complexes. The spodium–π bonding further complements the concept of the spodium bond and provides a wider range of research on the adjustment of the strength of spodium bond.

Chalcogen Bond Involving Zinc(II)/Cadmium(II) Carbonate and Its Enhancement by Spodium Bond

Carbonate MCO3 (M = Zn, Cd) can act as both Lewis acid and base to engage in a spodium bond with nitrogen-containing bases (HCN, NHCH2, and NH3) and a chalcogen bond with SeHX (X = F, Cl, OH, OCH3, NH2, and NHCH3), respectively. There is also a weak hydrogen bond in the chalcogen-bonded dyads. Both chalcogen and hydrogen bonds become stronger in the order of F > Cl > OH > OCH3 > NH2 > NHCH3. The chalcogen-bonded dyads are stabilized by a combination of electrostatic and charge transfer interactions. The interaction energy of chalcogen-bonded dyad is less than -10 kcal/mol at most cases. Furthermore, the chalcogen bond can be strengthened through coexistence with a spodium bond in N-base-MCO3-SeHX. The enhancement of chalcogen bond is primarily attributed to the charge transfer interaction. Additionally, the spodium bond is also enhanced by the chalcogen bond although the corresponding enhancing effect is small.
