Disassembly and reassembly of diphenylalanine crystals through evaporation of solvent

HYPOTHESIS

Crystalline self-assemblies of diphenylalanine (FF) are since long back considered to be related to Alzheimer's disease. An improved understanding of the mechanism behind the formation of such structures can lead to strategies for investigating the dynamic processes of assembly and disassembly of FF.

EXPERIMENT

The assembly, disassembly and reassembly of FF crystals are influenced by the solvent composition and can be triggered by evaporation of solvent. In this work these processes are directly monitored, and the structures obtained are analyzed.

FINDINGS

The role of the solvent for assembly, disassembly and reassembly of diphenylalanine crystals has been demonstrated. The initial crystal structure formed via self-assembly of FF monomers can be transformed into needle-like crystals and further to hollow hexagonal microtubes through evaporation of the solvent. It is shown that all the assembly-disassembly processes are spontaneous and driven by thermodynamics. It is also found that some of the crystalline structures exhibit optical waveguiding properties.

Pulse electrodeposited, morphology controlled organic-inorganic nanohybrids as bifunctional electrocatalysts for urea oxidation

Organic-inorganic nanohybrids with nanoscale architectures and electrocatalytic properties are emerging as a new branch of advanced functional materials. Herein, nanohybrid organic-inorganic nanosheets are grown on carbon paper via a pulse-electrochemical deposition technique. A benzo[2,1,3]selenadiazole-5-carbonyl protected dipeptide BSeFL (BSe = benzoselenadiazole; F = phenylalanine; and L = leucine) cross-linked with Ni2+ ions (Ni-BSeFL) and nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH)2) in a BSeFL/Ni(OH)2 electrode exhibits stable electrocatalytic activity toward urea oxidation. The cross-linked nanosheet morphology of nanohybrids was optimized by controlling the reduction potential during pulse electrodeposition. The BSeFL/Ni(OH)2 (-1.0 V) nanohybrid deposited at -1.0 V provides abundant active sites of Ni3+ with low charge transfer resistance (RCT) and high exchange current density (J0) at the electrocatalytic interface. The nanohybrids with Ni-BSeFL and Ni(OH)2 show low overpotential and superior stability for electrocatalytic urea electro-oxidation. The BSeFL/Ni(OH)2 (-1.0 V) nanohybrid based electrode requires a low potential of 1.30 V (vs. RHE) to acquire a current density of 10 mA cm-2 for the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) in urea containing alkaline solution which is lower than that for water oxidation in alkaline solution (1.49 V vs. RHE). The organic-inorganic nanohybrid BSeFL/Ni(OH)2 (-1.0 V) shows durability over 10 h for oxygen evolution and urea electro-oxidation, thereby confirming the BSeFL/Ni(OH)2 (-1.0 V) nanohybrid-based electrode as an efficient electrocatalyst.

Diels-Alder Cycloaddition to the Bay Region of Perylene and Its Derivatives as an Attractive Strategy for PAH Core Expansion: Theoretical and Practical Aspects

PAHs (polycyclic aromatics hydrocarbons), the compound group that contains perylene and its derivatives, including functionalized ones, have attracted a great deal of interest in many fields of science and modern technology. This review presents all of the research devoted to modifications of PAHs that are realized via the Diels–Alder (DA) cycloaddition of various dienophiles to the bay regions of PAHs, leading to the π-extension of the starting molecule. This type of annulative π-extension (APEX) strategy has emerged as a powerful and efficient synthetic method for the construction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their functionalized derivatives, nanographenes, and π-extended fused heteroarenes. Then, [4 + 2] cycloadditions of ethylenic dienophiles, -N=N-, i.e., diazo-dienophiles and acetylenic dienophiles, are presented. This subject is discussed from the organic synthesis point of view but supported by theoretical calculations. The possible applications of DA cycloaddition to PAH bay regions in various science and technology areas, and the prospects for the development of this synthetic method, are also discussed.

Surface Complexed ZnO Quantum Dot for White Light Emission with Controllable Chromaticity and Color Temperature

We report the formation of blue emitting Zn(MSA)₂ complex on the surface of a yellow emitting ZnO quantum dot (Qdot)-out of a complexation reaction between N-methylsalicylaldimine (MSA) and ZnO Qdot. This led to formation of a highly luminescent, photostable, single-component nanocomposite that emits bright natural white light, with (i) chromaticities of (0.31, 0.38) and (0.31, 0.36), (ii) color rendering indices (CRI) of 74 and 82, and (iii) correlated color temperatures (CCT) of 6505 and 6517 K in their solution and solid phases, respectively. Importantly, the control over the chromaticity and CCT-depending upon the degree of complexation-makes the reported nanocomposite a potential new advanced material in fabricating cost-effective single-component white light emitting devices (WLED) of choice and design in the near future.
