Structural Diversity of Copper(I) Cluster-Based Coordination Polymers with Pyrazine-2-thiol Ligand

Six novel copper(I) cluster-based coordination polymers (CPs) [Cu₉(pzt)₇Cl₂]_n (1), [Cu₂(pzt)Cl]_n (2), [Cu₄(pzt)₃Br]_n (3), [Cu(pzt)]_n (4), [Cu₄(pzt)₃I]_n (5), and [Cu₇(pzt)₆I]_n (6) were solvothermally synthesized using Hpzt (Hpzt = pyrazine-2-thiol) ligand and well-characterized by elemental analysis, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). Six CPs exhibit either 2D (4 and 6) or 3D (1-3, and 5) network based on diverse multinuclear {Cu_xS_y} clusters. The structural evolutions of 1-6 are greatly influenced by types of metal halides and the ligand-to-metal molar ratio used in the reaction. Among them, compound 1 displays interesting temperature-dependent photoluminescence arising from triplet cluster-centered (³CC) excited state from the cluster metal core. Compounds 1-6 also exhibit photocurrent responses upon visible-light illumination (λ = 420 nm) in the order 6 > 5 > 3 > 1 > 4 > 2. This work not only shows the structural diversity of {Cu_xS_y} clusters-based CPs but also provides an interesting insight into structural modulation using crystal engineering concept.

Near-unity thermally activated delayed fluorescence efficiency in three- and four-coordinate Au(i) complexes with diphosphine ligands

The synthesis and photoluminescence properties of three-coordinate Au(i) complexes with rigid diphosphine ligands LMe {1,2-bis[bis(2-methylphenyl)phosphino]benzene}, LEt {1,2-bis[bis(2-ethylphenyl)phosphino]benzene}, and LiPr {1,2-bis[bis(2-isopropylphenyl)phosphino]benzene} are investigated. The LMe and LEt ligands afford two types of complexes: dinuclear complexes [μ-LMe(AuCl)2] (1d) and [μ-LEt(AuCl)2] (2d) with an Au(i)-Au(i) bond and mononuclear three-coordinate Au(i) complexes LMeAuCl (1) and LEtAuCl (2). On the other hand, the bulkiest ligand, LiPr, affords three-coordinate Au(i) complexes, LiPrAuCl (3) and LiPrAuI (4), but no dinuclear complexes. X-ray analysis suggests that both 3 and 4 possess a highly distorted trigonal planar geometry. Moreover, luminescence data reveal that at room temperature, 3 and 4 exhibit yellow-green thermally activated delayed fluorescence in the crystalline state with maximum emission wavelengths at 558 and 549 nm, respectively. The emission yields are close to unity. Quantum chemical calculations suggest that the emission of 4 originates from the (σ + X) → π* excited state that possesses strong intraligand charge-transfer character. The luminescent properties of four-coordinate Au(i) complex (5) possessing a tetrahedral geometry are discussed on the basis of the emission spectra and decay times measured in a temperature range of 309-77 K.

Thermal Expansion Behavior of MI[AuX2(CN)2]-Based Coordination Polymers (M = Ag, Cu; X = CN, Cl, Br)

Two sets of trans-[AuX₂(CN)₂]^--based coordination polymer materials-M[AuX₂(CN)₂] (M = Ag; X = Cl, Br or M = Cu; X = Br) and M[Au(CN)₄] (M = Ag, Cu)-were synthesized and structurally characterized and their dielectric constants and thermal expansion behavior explored. The M[AuX₂(CN)₂] series crystallized in a tightly packed, mineral-like structure featuring 1-D trans-[AuX₂(CN)₂]^--bridged chains interconnected via a series of intermolecular Au···X and M···X (M = Ag, Cu) interactions. The M[Au(CN)₄] series adopted a 2-fold interpenetrated 3-D cyano-bound framework lacking any weak intermolecular interactions. Despite the tight packing and the presence of intermolecular interactions, these materials exhibited decreased thermal stability over unbound trans-[AuX₂(CN)₂]^- in [ⁿBu₄N][AuX₂(CN)₂]. A significant dielectric constant of up to ε_r = 36 for Ag[AuCl₂(CN)₂] (1 kHz) and a lower ε_r = 9.6 (1 kHz) for Ag[Au(CN)₄] were measured and interpreted in terms of their structures and composition. A systematic analysis of the thermal expansion properties of the M[AuX₂(CN)₂] series revealed a negative thermal expansion (NTE) component along the cyano-bridged chains with a thermal expansion coefficient (α_CN) of -13.7(11), -14.3(5), and -11.36(18) ppm·K^-1 for Ag[AuCl₂(CN)₂], Ag[AuBr₂(CN)₂], and Cu[AuBr₂(CN)₂], respectively. The Au···X and Ag···X interactions affect the thermal expansion similarly to metallophilic Au···Au interactions in M[Au(CN)₂] and AuCN; replacing X = Cl with the larger Br atoms has a less significant effect. A similar analysis for the M[Au(CN)₄] series (where the volume thermal expansion coefficient, α_V, is 41(3) and 68.7(19) ppm·K^-1 for M = Ag, Cu, respectively) underscored the significance of the effect of the atomic radius on the flexibility of the framework and, thus, the thermal expansion properties.

Assembly and dichroism of a four-component halogen-bonded metal–organic cocrystal salt solvate involving dicyanoaurate(I) acceptors

We describe the use of dicyanoaurate ions as linear ditopic metal–organic acceptors for the halogen bond-driven assembly of a dichroic metal–organic cocrystal based on azobenzene chromophores. Structural analysis by single crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that the material is a four-component solid, consisting of anticipated anionic metal–organic halogen-bonded chains based on dicyanoaurate ions, as well as complex potassium-based cations and discrete molecules of the crown ether 15-crown-5. Importantly, the structural analysis revealed the parallel alignment of the halogen-bonded chains required for dichroic behaviour, confirming that crystal engineering principles developed for the design of halogen-bonded dichroic organic cocrystals are also applicable to metal-based structures. In the broader context of crystal engineering, the structure of the herein reported dichroic material is additionally interesting as the presence of an ion pair, a neutral azobenzene and a molecule of a room-temperature liquid make it an example of a solid that simultaneously conforms to definitions of a salt, a cocrystal, and a solvate.
