An Intervention into the Diverse Utilities of Fluorenes: A Brobdingnagian Family

The keyword "Fluorene" search in SciFinder found more than 57,000 results, including high-impact journal articles, review articles, patents, books, proceedings, etc. Against this background, a detailed enquiry has been made by our group on various classes of fluorenes and their relevancy. For the past several decades, fluorene and its related compounds have experienced extensive studies, which are attributed to the vast range of applications they possess in various fields like sensors, polymers, OLED devices and even in the pharmaceutical industries. Since fluorene is an important member of the 'polyaromatic-hydrocarbon' family and has proved its relevancy in multidisciplinary areas, summarising those milestones might be worthwhile for future researchers. Here, we intend to highlight the key applications of fluorene derivatives in the form of a review article and have put much effort into consolidating some of their most imperative applications, including those in sensors and medicinal, optoelectronic and electrochemical fields. The manuscript divides the fluorene family into multiple subclasses, counting mono- and polyfluorenes, spirofluorenes, silicon-cored fluorenes, indenofluorenes, etc., based on their structure, and portrays all the critical properties of each class. Since fluorenes are globally accepted as outstanding candidates for numerous applications and practicalities, our effort may find crucial acceptance in the near future.

Remote steric control for undirected meta-selective C-H activation of arenes

Regioselective functionalization of arenes remains a challenging problem in organic synthesis. Steric interactions are often used to block sites adjacent to a given substituent, but they do not distinguish the remaining remote sites. We report a strategy based on remote steric control, whereby a roof-like ligand protects the distant para site in addition to the ortho sites, and thereby enables selective activation of meta carbon-hydrogen (C-H) bonds in the absence of ortho or para substituents. We demonstrate this concept for iridium-catalyzed meta-selective borylation of various monosubstituted arenes, including complex drug molecules. This strategy has the potential to expand the toolbox of C-H bond functionalization to previously nondifferentiable reaction sites.

Microporous Triptycene-Based Affinity Materials on Quartz Crystal Microbalances for Tracing of Illicit Compounds

Triptycene-based organic molecules of intrinsic microporosity (OMIMs) with extended functionalized π-surfaces are excellent materials for gas sorption and separation. In this study, the affinities of triptycene-based OMIM affinity materials on 195 MHz high-fundamental-frequency quartz crystal microbalances (HFF-QCMs) for hazardous and illicit compounds such as piperonal and (-)-norephedrine were determined. Both new and existing porous triptycene-based affinity materials were investigated, resulting in very high sensitivities and selectivities that could be applied for sensing purposes. Remarkable results were found for safrole - a starting material for illicit compounds such as ecstasy. A systematic approach highlights the effects of different size of π-surfaces of these affinity materials, allowing a classification of the properties that might be optimal for the design of future OMIM-based affinity materials.

Chiral C2-Symmetric Diimines with 4,5-Diazafluorene Units

A synthetic approach to a new group of stable chiral C2-symmetric diimines with the 4,5-diazafluorene core has been developed based on condensation of dipinodiazafluorene with aromatic diamines. The chemical structures of new compounds were proven by spectroscopic methods and X-ray crystallography. All the compounds form solvates with organic solvents (chloroform, benzene, 1,4-dioxane) and water. Specific spectral data of the new compounds are explained using calculated data (DFT). Diimines of the pinodiazafluorene series give colored reactions with transition metal ions and can be regarded as prospective polydentate ligands with interesting luminescent and chiroptical properties.
