Construction of Multifunctional Luminescent Lanthanide MOFs for Luminescent Sensing of Temperature, Trifluoroacetic Acid Vapor and Explosives

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with multifunctional and tunable optical properties have unique advantages in the field of sensing, and the structure and properties of MOFs are significantly influenced by the ligands. In this study, a Y-type tricarboxylic acid ligand containing amide bonds was synthesized through functional guidance, and three isomorphic and heterogeneous three-dimensional MOFs (Eu-MOF, Tb-MOF, and Gd-MOF) were obtained by solvothermal reaction. Further studies revealed that both the Tb-MOF and Eu-MOF could selectively detect picric acid (PA). The luminescence quenching of the two MOFs by PA was attributed to competing absorption and photoelectron energy transfer mechanisms. In addition, due to the energy transfer between Tb and Rhodamine B, Rhodamine B was encapsulated into Tb-MOF. The obtained material exhibited a linear relationship between the temperature parameters I544/I584 and temperature within the range of 280-400 K, the correlation coefficient (R2) reached an impressive value of 0.999, and the absolute sensitivity of the sample used for temperature sensing was 1.534% K-1. What is more, the material exhibited a good response to trifluoroacetic acid vapor, which suggests the potential of the material for temperature sensing and detection of trifluoroacetic acid vapor. The designed and investigated strategy can also serve as a reference for further research on excellent multifunctional sensors.

Series of Luminescent Lanthanide MOFs with Regular SHG Performance

Second-harmonic generation (SHG) is a kind of nonlinear optical phenomenon which has been widely used in optical devices, and factors influencing its signal are very complex. Here, taking advantage of excellent structural designability and overcoming the limitations of various coordinations of lanthanide metals, for the first time a series of lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) with one particular ligand were synthesized and structurally characterized to study the interference of the SHG signal. The optical performance including single-photon fluorescence and SHG was collected and analyzed. It is found that all 13 kinds of Ln-MOFs can be divided into 2 crystal configurations by their individual space groups and Ln-MOFs with coordinated metal atoms from La to Tb possessing the noncentrosymmetric C2 space group exhibit the SHG property, the intensity of which depends on the type of metal atoms, the pumping wavelength, and the size of the single-crystal particles. This is the first time that the relationship between the nonlinear optical properties and the structure, metal atoms, pumping wavelength, crystal size of the whole series of Ln-MOFs is studied systematically, providing a lot of interesting results and enriching the research scope of nonlinear optics and materials science.

Luminescent PMMA Films and PMMA@SiO2 Nanoparticles with Embedded Ln3+ Complexes for Highly Sensitive Optical Thermometers in the Physiological Temperature Range*

In recent years, luminescent materials doped with Ln³⁺ ions have attracted much attention for their application as optical thermometers based on both downshifting and upconversion processes. This study presents research done on the development of highly sensitive optical thermometers in the physiological temperature range based on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films doped with two series of visible Ln³⁺ complexes (Ln³⁺ =Tb³⁺ , Eu³⁺ , and Sm³⁺ ) and SiO₂ nanoparticles (NPs) coated with these PMMA films. The best performing PMMA film doped with Tb³⁺ and Eu³⁺ complexes was the PMMA[TbEuL₁ tppo]1 film (L₁ =4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenyl-1,3-butadionate; tppo=triphenylphosphine oxide), which showed good temperature sensing of S_r =4.21 % K^-1 at 313 K, whereas for the PMMA films doped with Tb³⁺ and Sm³⁺ complexes the best performing was the PMMA[TbSmL₂ tppo]3 film (L₂ =4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(4-chlorophenyl)-1,3-butadionate), with S_r =3.64 % K^-1 at 313 K. Additionally, SiO₂ NPs coated with the best performing films from each of the series of PMMA films (Tb-Eu and Tb-Sm) and their temperature-sensing properties were studied in water, showing excellent performance in the physiological temperature range (PMMA[TbEuL₁ tppo]1@SiO₂ : S_r =3.84 % °C at 20 °C; PMMA[TbSmL₂ tppo]3@SiO₂ : S_r =3.27 % °C at 20 °C) and the toxicity of these nanoparticles on human cells was studied, showing that they were nontoxic.

Color-Tunable and High-Efficiency Dye-Encapsulated Metal-Organic Framework Composites Used for Smart White-Light-Emitting Diodes

Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (typically dye-encapsulated MOFs) are considered as one kind of interesting downconversion materials for white-light-emitting diodes (LEDs), but their quantum efficiency (QE) is not sufficient and thus needs to be significantly enhanced for practical applications. In this study, we successfully synthesized a series of Rh@bio-MOF-1 (Rh = rhodamine) with an internal QE as high as ∼79% via a solvothermal reaction followed by cation exchanges. The high efficiency of the Rh@bio-MOF-1 composites was attributable to the high intrinsic luminescent efficiency of the selected Rh dyes, the confinement effect in the bio-MOF-1 host, and the uniform particle morphology. The emission maximum could be continuously tuned from 550 to 610 nm by controlling the species and concentration of encapsulated dye molecules, showing great color tunability of the dye-encapsulated MOFs. The emission lifetime of ∼7 ns was 1 or 2 magnitude orders shorter than that of Ce³⁺- or Eu²⁺-doped inorganic phosphors, allowing for visible light communication (VLC). White LEDs, fabricated by using the synthesized Rh@bio-MOF-1 composite and inorganic phosphors of green (Ba,Sr)₂SiO₄:Eu²⁺ and red CaAlSiN₃:Eu²⁺, exhibited a high color rendering index of 80-94, a luminous efficacy of 94-156 lm/W, and an excellent stability in color point against drive current. The Rh@bio-MOF-1 composites with tunable colors, short emission lifetime, and high QE are expected to be used for smart white LEDs with multifunctions of both lighting and VLC.
