Exceptional three- to six-photon absorption at organometallic dendrimers

The light-intensity dependence of multi-photon absorption (MPA) affords outstanding spatial control. Furthermore, compared to the higher-energy photons needed for analogous linear absorption, the lower-energy photons involved in MPA often correspond to important wavelengths, such as those of the biological and telecommunications "windows". It is therefore of crucial importance to develop molecules that exhibit outstanding MPA cross-sections. However, although progress has been made with two-photon absorption, there is currently a dearth of efficient instantaneous n-photon absorbers (n > 2), a key reason being the scarcity of structure-property studies required to understand higher-order MPA. We herein report systematically-varied metallodendrimers up to third-generation in size, together with their nonlinear absorptive responses over the spectral range 600-2520 nm. We show that the dendrimers exhibit exceptional instantaneous three- to six-photon absorption cross-sections, with maximal values increasing with dendrimer generation and installation of solubilizing group, and we report that changing the groups at the dendrimer periphery can shift the wavelengths of the nPA maxima. We also describe time-dependent DFT studies that have facilitated assignment of the key linear and nonlinear transitions and disclosed the crucial role of the metal in the outstanding MPA performance.

Substituent and redox effects on the second-order NLO response of Ru(ii) complexes with polypyridine ligands: a theoretical study

Modifying ligands in four studied Ru(II) complexes have slight influence on their static first hyperpolarizabilities (βtot) values. However, the βtot values of complexes 1+/−–4+/− are all enhanced and the largest βtot value is observed for complex 4−.

DANPY (dimethylaminonaphthylpyridinium): an economical and biocompatible fluorophore

Dyes with nonlinear optical (NLO) properties enable new imaging techniques and photonic systems. We have developed a dye (DANPY-1) for photonics applications in biological substrates such as nucleic acids; however, the design specification also enables it to be used for visualizing biomolecules. It is a prototype dye demonstrating a water-soluble, NLO-active fluorophore with high photostability, a large Stokes shift, and a favorable toxicity profile. A practical and scalable synthetic route to DANPY salts has been optimized featuring: (1) convergent Pd-catalyzed Suzuki coupling with pyridine 4-boronic acid, (2) site-selective pyridyl N-methylation, and (3) direct recovery of crystalline intermediates without chromatography. We characterize the optical properties, biocompatibility, and biological staining behavior of DANPY-1. In addition to stability and solubility across a range of polar media, the DANPY-1 chromophore shows a first hyperpolarizability similar to common NLO dyes such as Disperse Red 1 and DAST, a large two-photon absorption cross section for its size, substantial affinity to nucleic acids in vitro, an ability to stain a variety of cellular components, and strong sensitivity of its fluorescence properties to its dielectric environment.

Ruthenium Alkynyl Complexes in Non-Linear Optics

Non-linear optical (NLO) materials are able to modify the propagation characteristics of light. Such materials have a range of potential applications in advanced technologies and are therefore of considerable interest. This account summarizes the development of one class of organometallics as potential NLO materials, namely ruthenium alkynyl complexes. These are available in high yields by straightforward synthetic procedures and have good thermal and environmental stability. In studies ranging from small molecules (molecular weights ~1000) to second-generation dendrimers (with molecular weights of more than 20000), the author’s group and collaborators have assayed the NLO effects in complexes with a variety of ‘multipolar’ charge distributions (dipolar, quadrupolar, octupolar), revealing that ruthenium alkynyl complexes can be engineered to display record and near-record values of the parameters responsible for various interesting NLO effects. In particular, recent studies driven by the current focus on optimizing molecular multiphoton absorption cross-sections have afforded several examples with world-record values of these key coefficients. The author’s group has also shown that the fully reversible redox processes undergone by many ruthenium alkynyl complexes are a distinctive feature that can be exploited to afford molecular NLO switches, because the different and reversibly accessible redox forms of the complexes exhibit measurably different NLO responses. This unique type of switching has been extended in two ways to afford molecular switches with multiple accessible NLO states. First, ruthenium alkynyl complexes have been subjected to various ‘orthogonal’ (independent) switching stimuli (specifically oxidation–reduction, protonation–deprotonation, and photoisomerization), affording complexes that function as NLO switches with up to six distinct NLO states. Second, heterobimetallic complexes coupling ruthenium alkynyl and iron alkynyl centres have been prepared that exhibit multiple redox-accessible NLO states.
