Abstract
BACKGROUND Academic research on digital mental health tends to focus on its efficacy and effectiveness, with much less attention paid to user preferences and experiences in real-world settings. OBJECTIVE This study aims to analyze service characteristics that service users value and compare the extent to which various digital and nondigital mental health treatments and management methods fulfill users' expectations. METHODS A total of 114 people with at least moderate levels of depressive symptoms (as measured by Patient Health Questionnaire-9 score ≥10) completed a web-based questionnaire measuring their awareness and adoption of digital mental health services and their valuation of 15 psychological service attributes, including effectiveness, credibility, waiting time, and more. They were also assessed on their expectations toward seven common mental health treatments and management methods, including (1) face-to-face psychological intervention, (2) medication, (3) guided internet-based psychological intervention, (4) face-to-face counseling service, (5) self-guided mental health apps for depression, (6) self-help bibliotherapy, and (7) psychological intervention via videoconferencing. RESULTS A Friedman test with a Dunn posttest showed the average importance rank of "effectiveness" was significantly higher than all other measured attributes. "Privacy," "credibility," and "cost" were ranked as equally important. Participants rated face-to-face psychological intervention the most effective management method, while other digital management methods were perceived as less effective. Medication was perceived as the least appealing method, while other methods were deemed equally appealing. Face-to-face psychological intervention, medication, and counseling were considered less satisfactory due to their higher costs and longer waiting times when compared to digital services. Repeated measures ANOVA showed some forms of management method were more likely to be adopted, including guided internet-based psychological intervention, psychological intervention via videoconferencing, face-to-face psychological intervention, and face-to-face counseling services provided by a counselor as compared to self-guided mobile apps, self-help bibliotherapy, and medication. CONCLUSIONS The study highlights the importance of considering multiple service attributes beyond effectiveness in depression management methods, despite effectiveness being regarded as the most crucial factor using the rank method. Compared to nondigital services, digital services were identified as having specific strengths as perceived by users. Future dissemination and promotion efforts may focus on debunking myths of guided internet-based psychological intervention as a less effective option and promoting the particular service strengths of digital services.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Subclinical psychotic, depression, and anxiety symptoms form a transdiagnostic 'at-risk state' for the development of mental disorders. Emotion regulation has been identified as a transdiagnostic factor relevant to the formation of these symptoms that can be successfully addressed in clinical interventions. Here, we tested whether a group-based emotion regulation training would be effective in reducing distress and at preventing the transition to mental disorders in an at-risk sample. METHODS Participants with distressing subclinical psychotic, depression, or anxiety symptoms (n = 138) were randomly allocated to either the 8-week group-based affect regulation training (ART; Springer, New York) or an 8-week self-help bibliotherapy (BT). They underwent biweekly measurements during the intervention, as well as at a six- and 12-month follow-up. In an exploratory analysis, we tested whether the ART would be superior to BT in preventing the transition to any mental disorder at 12-month follow-up. We also tested for differences in trajectories of psychopathology and emotion regulation (via questionnaires) and emotion regulation in daily life (via the experience-sampling method). RESULTS Participants in the ART condition showed a greater improvement of emotion regulation in daily life than those with BT, but the ART was not superior over BT in preventing the transition to mental disorders. There were significant longitudinal reductions from pre- to post-intervention for general psychopathology and symptoms but no superiority of the ART over BT. CONCLUSIONS Despite its efficacy in improving emotion regulation skills, the ART does not produce effects on psychopathology that justify its recommendation over self-help approaches.

Abstract
Extensive ecosystem degradation and increasing urbanization are altering human relationships with nature. To explore these trends, we created a transdisciplinary, narrative-led podcast series produced by the BBC, called Forest 404. The series explored the implications of a world without nature. An online experimental component mobilized audience participation (n = 7,596) to assess responses to natural soundscapes with and without abiotic, biotic, and poetic elements across five biomes. Conditions featuring the sounds of wildlife, such as bird song, were perceived to be more psychologically restorative than those without. Participants' personal lived experiences were strongly related to these outcomes; those who had memories triggered by the sounds were more likely to find them psychologically restorative and exhibited a greater motivation to preserve them. Moreover, the effects of both soundscape composition and memories on preservation behavior were partially mediated by restorative potential; respondents were more likely to want to protect the sounds they heard if they thought they might offer therapeutic outcomes. Our findings highlight the value of art-science collaborations and demonstrate how maintaining contact with the natural world can promote wellbeing and foster behaviors that protect planetary health.

Abstract
Caregiving appraisal is a key driver to moderating caregiving outcomes. The caregiving appraisal of informal caregivers of people with dementia requires increased attention. This study aimed to explore the feasibility and acceptability of an evidence-based bibliotherapy protocol, and test the efficacy on improving caregiving appraisal. A two-arm pilot randomized controlled trial was adopted. Sixty informal caregivers were randomized to either the intervention group, receiving eight weekly professional-guided bibliotherapy sessions in addition to usual care; or the usual care group. The professional-guided bibliotherapy sessions were weekly sessions in which caregivers self-read the designated chapter and then received telephone coaching. Caregiving appraisal, coping, psychological well-being, positive aspects of caregiving, knowledge of dementia, and attitude toward dementia were assessed both at baseline and immediately after the intervention. Assessors were blinded to group allocation. Individual interviews among 10 participants from the intervention group were conducted to explorecaregivers' acceptance of the intervention. Descriptive statistics, χ 2 test, Mann-Whitney U test, independent t test, generalized estimating equation, and content analysis were used for data analysis. This study pioneered the use of bibliotherapy among informal caregivers of people with dementia. The participant recruitment rate was 69.8%. The attrition rate of the intervention group was 20%. Bibliotherapy had a significant time-by-group interaction effect on caregiving appraisal (p < 0.001), coping (p = 0.003), positive aspects of caregiving (p = 0.001), knowledge of dementia (p = 0.017), and attitude toward dementia (p < 0.001). The effect on psychological well-being, however, was only significant on the personal growth subscale (p = 0.025). The acceptability was also confirmed. No adverse event was documented.

Abstract
E-Bibliotherapy deals with adolescent psychological stress by manually or automatically recommending multiple reading articles around their stressful events, using electronic devices as a medium. To make E-Bibliotherapy really useful, generating instructive questions before their reading is an important step. Such a question shall (a) attract teens' attention; (b) convey the essential message of the reading materials so as to improve teens' active comprehension; and most importantly (c) highlight teens' stress to enable them to generate emotional resonance and thus willingness to pursue the reading. Therefore in this paper, we propose to generate instructive questions from the multiple recommended articles to guide teens to read. Four solutions based on the neural encoder-decoder model are presented to tackle the task. For model training and testing, we construct a novel large-scale QA dataset named TeenQA, which is specific to adolescent stress. Due to the extensibility of question expressions, we incorporate three groups of automatic evaluation metrics as well as one group of human evaluation metrics to examine the quality of the generated questions. The experimental results show that the proposed Encoder-Decoder with Summary on Contexts with Feature-rich embeddings (ED-SoCF) solution can generate good questions for guiding reading, achieving comparable performance on some semantic similarity metrics with that of humans.

Abstract
Facilitated self-help and problem-solving strategies can empower and support family carers to cope with caregiving for people with severe mental illnesses. This single-blind multi-site randomised controlled trial examined the effects of a five-month family-facilitated problem-solving based self-learning program (PBSP in addition to usual care), versus a family psychoeducation group program and usual psychiatric care only in recent-onset psychosis, with a six-month follow-up. In each of three study sites (integrated community centres for mental wellness), 114 people with early psychosis (≤5 years illness onset) and their family carers were randomly selected and allocated to one of three study groups (n = 38). Caregiving burden (primary outcome) and patients' and carers' health conditions were assessed at recruitment, and one-month and six-months post-intervention. Overall, 106 (94.7%) participants completed the assigned intervention and ≥1 post-test. Generalised estimating equations and subsequent contrast tests indicated that the PBSP participants showed significantly greater improvements in carers' burden, caregiving experiences and problem-solving ability, and patients' psychotic symptoms, recovery, and duration of re-hospitalisations over the six-month follow-up, compared with the other two groups (moderate to large effect size, η2 = 0.12-0.24). Family-assisted problem-solving based self-learning programs were found to be effective to improve both psychotic patients' and their carers' psychosocial health over a medium term, thus reducing patients' risk of relapse.

Abstract
Anxiety and sleep disorders are highly prevalent affecting millions of people worldwide. Complementary therapies like art therapy, bibliotherapy, and music have been used to manage these problems. The objective of this study was to evaluate levels of anxiety and sleep disorder symptoms of participants before and after a 30-day intervention of listening to short poetic audios. Thirty-one participants listened to audio-taped messages, which associate music and literature for 30 days. Questionnaires were answered by participants prior to the start of the study (baseline collection) and after 30 days (final collection). Setting: the study was done in the city of Ribeirao Preto (Sao Paulo-Brazil). Participants were 31 adults with anxiety symptoms and sleep problems. The scores of the questionnaires were analyzed and compared by the t test for paired samples (α = 0.05), used to evaluate possible differences in anxiety and stress symptoms and sleep disturbances before and after the 30 days of intervention. Significantly lower levels of anxiety and sleep disorders were found after the 30-day intervention. This study reinforces the benefits of music and literature for improving the quality of life of people by reducing levels of anxiety and sleep disorder symptoms.

The effects of bibliotherapy on the mental well-being of informal caregivers of people with neurocognitive disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis. Int J Nurs Stud 2020; 109:103643. Abstract
BACKGROUND The number of people with neurocognitive disorder is increasing, and the majority of them are cared for by informal caregivers in the community. Mental health problems are common among caregivers, however, professional support for them is often limited. Non-pharmacological self-help interventions, such as bibliotherapy, may improve mental well-being and has the potential for being integrated into clinical or social services. OBJECTIVES To explore what types of bibliotherapy have been used for improving the mental well-being of informal caregivers of people with neurocognitive disorders, and the effect on mental well-being outcomes. DESIGN A systematic review and meta-analysis. REVIEW METHODS Six databases were searched for relevant articles on July 1, 2019. Clinical trial registries and the reference lists of included studies were also searched. Both randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental studies were included. The Cochrane Collaboration risk of bias tool for randomized controlled trials was used to assess the quality of studies. Review Manager 5.3 was used to analyze data, standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to estimate the pooled treatment effect. Random effects models were used for meta-analyses. Funnel plot was not performed due to the limited number of studies. This systematic review was registered at PROSPERO (CRD42019129152). RESULTS Nine randomized controlled trials with 1036 informal caregivers were included. Most of the included studies had some aspects of bias. Three types of bibliotherapy were used. Bibliotherapy had a significant pooled medium to large effect on reducing depression at Z = 1.99 (SMD = -0.74, 95%CI = -1.47 to -0.01, p = .05), however, the heterogeneity was high (I2 = 94%). For the subgroups, only the video-based bibliotherapy significantly reduced depression at Z = 2.78 (I2 = 83%, SMD = -2.11, 95%CI = -3.6 to -0.62, p = .005). Bibliotherapy had a significant small to medium effect on caregiver's self-efficacy for dealing with problem behaviours at Z = 2.44 (I2 = 0, SMD = 0.36, 95%CI = 0.05 to 0.67, p = .02), however, the effect on self-efficacy for obtaining respite was not significant (I2 = 0, SMD = 0.17, 95%CI = -0.16 to 0.49, p = .32). The effect on decreasing state anxiety was significant at Z = 2.30 (I2 = 22%, SMD = -0.22, 95% CI = -0.41 to -0.33, p = .02). CONCLUSIONS Bibliotherapy showed positive effects on reducing depression, improving self-efficacy for dealing with problem behaviors and reducing anxiety among informal caregivers. The effects on reducing depression should be viewed with caution due to high heterogeneity. The effects on other mental well-being outcomes are inconclusive due to limited number of studies and this underscores the need for further research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Bibliotherapy refers to psychological self-help interventions that utilize treatment books to improve psychological well-being. Research supports bibliotherapy as an efficacious intervention for a variety of mental health problems. Yet, few studies have investigated bibliotherapy in psychosocial oncology. The objective of this randomized controlled trial was to examine the efficacy of the NuCare intervention, delivered as a self-directed workbook, for enhancing empowerment, coping, and quality of life and reducing distress in patients with cancer. METHODS Eighty-nine adult patients with cancer were randomized to receive the workbook for 6 weeks or the control condition, usual care. Participants completed questionnaires at baseline, 6 weeks post-baseline, and 10 weeks post-baseline. RESULTS The increase of empowerment (main outcome) and quality of life and the decrease of distress in the NuCare group from pre-intervention to follow-up assessment differed significantly from the respective difference scores in the control group. CONCLUSIONS The self-administered NuCare workbook is a potentially cost-effective, minimal intervention addressing psychosocial needs of patients with cancer. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Evidence-based bibliotherapy can empower patients and has the promise of reducing the burden on the healthcare system while enhancing the immediacy of psychosocial support.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop and explore the feasibility of audio-based (ACBT) and computer-based (CCBT) cognitive behavioral therapies for older adults with depressive symptoms. The audio program consisted of 8 compact discs and a workbook while the computer program consisted of 11 modules of similar duration provided on a tablet PC. Both interventions consisted of the following topics: identifying and changing unhelpful thoughts, addressing feelings, relaxation, engaging in pleasant events, assertiveness, and problem-solving. Fifty-one older adults were recruited from medical settings and rural communities. Participants were randomly assigned to immediate treatment (ACBT or CCBT) or delayed treatment control condition. Analyses were conducted to examine change on interviewer-based and self-reported depression. A significant interaction effect between time and condition was found on the interviewer-based depression scale. This suggests that both types of treatments decreased depressive symptoms over time when compared to a delayed treatment control. Computer-based and audio-based cognitive behavioral treatments may be valuable low-cost modalities to deliver psychotherapy to older adults with depressive symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is an extremely common mental health disorder, with prevalence rates rising. Low-intensity interventions are frequently used to help meet the demand for treatment. Bibliotherapy, for example, is often prescribed via books on prescription schemes (for example 'Reading Well' in England) to those with mild to moderate symptomology. Bibliotherapy can effectively reduce symptoms of depression (Naylor et al., 2010). However, the majority of self-help books are based on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), which may not be suitable for all patients. Research supports the use of positive psychology interventions for the reduction of depression symptoms (Bolier et al., 2013) and as such self-help books from this perspective should be empirically tested. AIMS This study aimed to test the efficacy of 'Positive Psychology for Overcoming Depression' (Akhtar, 2012), a self-help book for depression that is based on the principles of positive psychology, in comparison with a CBT self-help book that is currently prescribed in England as part of the Reading Well books on prescription scheme. METHOD Participants (n = 115) who were not receiving treatment, but had symptoms of depression, read the positive psychology or the CBT self-help book for 8 weeks. Depression and well-being were measured at baseline, post-test and 1-month follow-up. RESULTS Results suggest that both groups experienced a reduction in depression and an increase in well-being, with no differences noted between the two books. CONCLUSIONS Future directions are discussed in terms of dissemination, to those with mild to moderate symptoms of depression, via books on prescription schemes.

Abstract
The introductory article to this special edition of School Psychology International, “Using Children’s Literature to Strengthen Social and Emotional Learning,” describes the need for a broader base of support for children’s mental health needs. Both nationally and internationally, the limited number of mental health professionals demands alternative options for the delivery of mental health services. Schools are recommended as one proposed venue for providing these services to children and youth. As such, teachers need easy-to-use basic information about mental health resources that are viable, yet rely on minimal professional support and supervision. One option is bibliotherapy, using books and stories to support social emotional needs. From the mental health perspective of both prevention and intervention, bibliotherapy is proposed not just as a professional’s therapeutic tool, but also as a layman’s resource to address students’ basic social emotional needs. We offer resources from a website that includes basic bibliotherapy lesson plans, posters, activities, and video clips—all centered on the five foundational competencies identified by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL). This website [ http://education.byu.edu/sociallearning ] is geared to educators and mental health professionals who work with elementary school children, ages 5–11.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The practice of reading and discussing literature in groups is long established, stretching back into classical antiquity. Although benefits of therapeutic reading groups have been highlighted, research into participants' perceptions of these groups has been limited. AIMS To explore the experiences of those attending therapeutic reading groups, considering the role of both the group, and the literature itself, in participants' ongoing experiences of distress. METHOD Eleven participants were recruited from two reading groups in the South-East of England. One focus group was run, and eight individuals self-selected for individual interviews. The data were analysed together using a thematic analysis drawing on dialogical theories. RESULTS Participants described the group as an anchor, which enabled them to use fiction to facilitate the discussion of difficult emotional topics, without referring directly to personal experience. Two aspects of this process are explored in detail: the use of narratives as transportation, helping to mitigate the intensity of distress; and using fiction to explore possibilities, alternative selves and lives. CONCLUSIONS For those who are interested and able, reading groups offer a relatively de-stigmatised route to exploring and mediating experiences of distress. Implications in the present UK funding environment are discussed.

Abstract
TOPIC Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects more than 5 million American children; the likelihood of their parents experiencing stress is high, which may lead to negative outcomes. Mindful parenting is a parent training modality that teaches compassion, listening, and creative engagement with one's child, and has been shown to be effective in decreasing levels of parental stress. PURPOSE An 8-week evidence-based applied clinical project (N = 7) was designed to answer the question: In parents of children with the diagnosis of ADHD, or exhibiting ADHD traits, what is the effect of providing mindful parenting psychoeducation in addition to standard of care treatment on levels of parental stress post intervention? SOURCES USED An exhaustive literature search was performed using the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, the Cochrane Library, Psyc-INFO, and PubMed. CONCLUSIONS Outcomes were measured using the Parenting Stress Index, Fourth Edition Short Form (PSI-4-SF). Scores on the Total Stress scale decreased significantly after 8 weeks (p = .018); a significant decrease also occurred across two of the three PSI-4-SF subscales (Parental Distress and Parent-Child Dysfunctional Interaction). Recommendations for practice change, suggestions for future clinical inquiry, and project limitations are discussed.

Abstract
Background Guided self-help is a recommended first-step treatment for bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder and atypical variants of these disorders. Further research is needed to compare guided self-help that is delivered face-to-face versus via email. Methods/Design This clinical trial uses a randomised, controlled design to investigate the effectiveness of providing guided self-help either face-to-face or via e-mail, also using a delayed treatment control condition. At least 17 individuals are required per group, giving a minimum N of 51. Discussion Symptom outcomes will be assessed and estimates of cost-effectiveness made. Results are proposed to be disseminated locally and internationally (through submission to conferences and peer-reviewed journals), and will hopefully inform local service provision. The trial has been approved by an ethics review board and was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01832792 on 9 April 2013.

Abstract
Externalizing problem behaviour is one of the most common childhood disorders. Parent training is an effective treatment for these children and there is growing interest in the effects of parent-administered interventions with minimal therapist contact. This randomized controlled study examined the efficacy of a telephone-assisted parent-administered behavioural intervention (bibliotherapy) in families with preschool children with externalizing problem behaviour. Families were randomly assigned to a treatment group (n = 26) and an untreated waitlist control group (n = 22). The intervention comprised the reading of an 11 chapter self-help book and 11 weekly telephone consultations. Compared to the control group, the treatment group demonstrated significant decreases in parent-reported externalizing and internalizing child problem behaviour and dysfunctional parenting practices. Moreover, treated parents reported less parenting-related strains and decreases in parental depression, anxiety, and stress. The results suggest that telephone-assisted self-administered parent training is an effective alternative to more intensive forms of behavioural family intervention for preschool children with externalizing problem behaviour.

Abstract
Many people with a diagnosable mental illness do not receive professional treatment. Instead, they may turn to media mental health professionals for diagnosis and treatment recommendations. This study content analyzed episodes of Dr. Phil and issues of Psychology Today to determine what mental disorders are covered and treatments are recommended, and to determine whether their coverage of mental disorders corresponds to the national prevalence of mental disorders. Both sources provide content about depression more than about any other mental illness. Both also make recommendations for psychotherapy more than they recommend other forms of treatment. The study also found no relation between the proportion of times that mental disorders were discussed and the prevalence of the disorders among American adults. This research helps to lay a foundation for future research addressing the relations among mental disorders, self-treatment, and the media's role in mental health.
