Abstract
The ability of human tissues to self-repair is limited, which motivates the scientific community to explore new and better therapeutic approaches to tissue regeneration. The present manuscript provides a comparative study between a marine-based composite biomaterial, and another composed of well-established counterparts for bone tissue regeneration. Blue shark skin collagen was combined with bioapatite obtained from blue shark's teeth (mColl:BAp), while bovine collagen was combined with synthetic hydroxyapatite (bColl:Ap) to produce 3D composite scaffolds by freeze-drying. Collagens showed similar profiles, while apatite particles differed in their composition, being the marine bioapatite a fluoride-enriched ceramic. The marine-sourced biomaterials presented higher porosities, improved mechanical properties, and slower degradation rates when compared to synthetic apatite-reinforced bovine collagen. The in vivo performance regarding bone tissue regeneration was evaluated in defects created in femoral condyles in New Zealand rabbits twelve weeks post-surgery. Micro-CT results showed that mColl:BAp implanted condyles had a slower degradation and an higher tissue formation (17.9 ± 6.9 %) when compared with bColl:Ap implanted ones (12.9 ± 7.6 %). The histomorphometry analysis provided supporting evidence, confirming the observed trend by quantifying 13.1 ± 7.9 % of new tissue formation for mColl:BAp composites and 10.4 ± 3.2 % for bColl:Ap composites, suggesting the potential use of marine biomaterials for bone regeneration.

Abstract
AIM The purpose of this study was to evaluate using microCT and positron emission tomography (PET) analysis, the influence on bone healing of the placement of particulate autogenous bone in the antrostomy, and in the subjacent region after maxillary sinus elevation with xenograft. MATERIAL AND METHODS The sinus mucosa was elevated in sixteen male New Zealand rabbits and they were both grafted with a collagenated cortico-cancellous porcine bone. The antrostomy and the near subjacent region were filled with either the same xenograft (control site) or with particulate autogenous bone (test site) harvested from the tibia. The antrostomies were covered with collagen membranes. MicroCT (measured in Hounsfield Units) and microPET (kBq/cm3) using sodium fluoride infiltration (18F-NaF) were performed at the time of euthanasia that was performed after 1 and 8 weeks of healing, using 8 animals in each group. The Wilcoxon test was used for analysis. RESULTS At the microCT analysis, after 1 and 8 weeks of healing, no statistically significant differences were found between groups. Bone increased and xenograft decreased significantly between the two periods of healing. At the microPET analysis, the percentage of bone increased significantly over time in both test and control groups and no significant differences were found between groups. CONCLUSION The placement of autogenous bone in the antrostomy and the subjacent region after maxillary sinus elevation did not enhance bone formation compared with sites where only xenograft was used. Both microCT and microPET showed increase bone formation over time.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to evaluate peri-implant bone formation in rabbits after sinus grafting mediated by hydroxyapatite and beta-tricalcium phosphate (HA + β-TCP) in granule or paste configurations, concomitant with immediate implant installation. MATERIAL & METHODS Thirty-four rabbit maxillary sinuses were grafted with HA + β-TCP, half of which were applied in a granule and half in a paste composition. Implant placement was performed simultaneously. At 7 and 40 days postoperatively, the animals were euthanized, and samples were prepared for tomographic, microtomographic, histological, histometric (hematoxylin and eosin staining, HE), and immunohistochemical (labeling of transcription factor Runx-2 [RUNX2], vascular endothelial growth factor [VEGF], osteocalcin [OCN], and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase [TRAP]) analysis. Implant removal torque was also measured. RESULTS On tomography, maintenance of sinus membrane integrity was observed in both the groups. Higher values of morphometric parameters evaluated by micro-CT were found in the "paste group" after seven days. At 40 days, there were no significant differences between the groups in most of the microtomographic parameters evaluated. In histological sections stained with HE, a higher percentage of newly formed bone was observed in the "granule group" after 40 days. Similar positive immunolabeling was observed for both RUNX2 and OCN in both the experimental groups. TRAP immunolabeling was similar in both groups as well. VEGF labeling increased in the "granule group", indicating a higher osteoconductive potential in this biomaterial. Similar removal torque values were observed in both groups. Thus, the two HA + β-TCP configurations showed similar healing patterns of simultaneously installed implants adjacent to sinus floor elevation. However, significantly higher bone values were observed for the "granule configuration". CONCLUSIONS The HA + β-TCP granules and paste presentations showed favorable long-term healing results, with bone formation in similar quantities and quality adjacent to the implants.

Abstract
Objective: To compare healing of collagenated and non-collagenated xenografts used for maxillary sinus floor elevation. Materials and Methods: Two different xenografts were used: deproteinized bovine bone (DBBM group) and collagenated corticocancellous porcine bone (collagenated group). Healing was studied after 2, 4, and 8 weeks. The loss of dimensions of the elevated area and the percentages of new bone, xenograft remnants, osteoclastic zones, vessels, inflammatory infiltrates, and soft tissues were analyzed. Three regions were evaluated: close to the bone walls (bone wall region), subjacent the sinus mucosa (submucosa region), and the center of the elevated area (middle region). The primary variables were the percentage of new bone and xenograft remnants. Results: Between 2 and 8 weeks, the elevated areas showed a reduction of 16.3% and 52.2% in the DBBM and collagenated groups, respectively (p < 0.01 between the two areas after 8 weeks). After 8 weeks, the highest content of new bone was observed in the bone wall region, which was higher in the collagenated group than in the DBBM group (41.6% and 28.6%, respectively; p < 0.01). A similar quantity of new bone was found between the two groups in other regions. A higher percentage of vessels in all regions evaluated (p < 0.01) and soft tissue in the sub-mucosa region (p < 0.05) was found in the collagenated group than in the DBBM group. Conclusions: The present study showed that both xenografts allowed new bone formation. In comparison with the non-collagenated xenograft, the collagenated xenograft underwent higher resorption, resulting in greater shrinkage of the elevated space after sinus lifting and a higher content of new bone in the regions close to the bone walls. Clinical relevance: In this study, the region adjacent to the bone wall showed the highest new bone content. This region resembles the base of the sinus, closest to the sinus floor and walls, and is the most important region from a clinical point of view because it is where the implant will be installed. Residues of the biomaterial remained after 8 weeks of healing. Other reports have shown that these biomaterial residues may interfere with the integration of implants.

Abstract
AIM to evaluate bone formation in close contact with the sinus mucosa after different periods from sinus augmentation and the influence on healing of the presence of an inward dis-placed bone window. MATERIAL AND METHODS Eighteen rabbits were included in the experiment. A trap-door technique was applied at the test sites, and the bony window was elevated inward (inward window; IW) together with the sinus mucosa. At the control sites, the bony window was removed before the elevation of the sinus mucosa. The elevated space was filled with deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) and both access windows were covered with a collagen membrane. Histometric measurements were performed subjacent the sinus mucosa after 2, 4, and 8 weeks of healing. RESULTS Very few sinuses presented small percentages of new bone in close contact with the sinus mucosa in the various period examined. The presence of bone in the neighbor areas might have influenced bone formation close to the sinus mucosa. The inward displaced bone window supported bone formation close to the sinus mucosa only in the earliest period of healing, while the bone walls increased their influence over time. The lack of increased new bone percentage over time in the most central regions of the elevated sinus mucosa do not support the hypothesis that the sinus mucosa may express its potential in bone formation. It can be speculated that the new bone found in the intermediate and middle regions of the control sites in the earliest period of healing might be due to residual of bone from the osteotomy. CONCLUSIONS Very small amounts of new bone were found subjacent to the sinus mucosa, mostly formed from the bone walls, the inward displaced bone window or from possible bone residues from the osteotomy procedures. The lack of increased new bone percentage over time in the most central regions of the elevated sinus mucosa indicates that the contribution to bone formation provided by the sinus mucosa is limited.

A Narrative Review on the Effectiveness of Bone Regeneration Procedures with OsteoBiol® Collagenated Porcine Grafts: The Translational Research Experience over 20 Years. Abstract
Over the years, several bone regeneration procedures have been proposed using natural (autografts, allografts, and xenografts) and synthetic (i.e., metals, ceramics, and polymers) bone grafts. In particular, numerous in vitro and human and animal in vivo studies have been focused on the discovery of innovative and suitable biomaterials for oral and maxillofacial applications in the treatment of severely atrophied jaws. On this basis, the main objective of the present narrative review was to investigate the efficacy of innovative collagenated porcine bone grafts (OsteoBiol®, Tecnoss®, Giaveno, Italy), designed to be as similar as possible to the autologous bone, in several bone regeneration procedures. The scientific publications were screened by means of electronic databases, such as PubMed, Scopus, and Embase, finally selecting only papers that dealt with bone substitutes and scaffolds for bone and soft tissue regeneration. A total of 201 papers have been detected, including in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies. The effectiveness of over 20 years of translational research demonstrated that these specific porcine bone substitutes are safe and able to improve the biological response and the predictability of the regenerative protocols for the treatment of alveolar and maxillofacial defects.

Abstract
Sinus floor elevation is a surgical procedure that allows for the insertion of the implant in the posterior region of the maxilla in case of insufficient volume of native bone. Several studies have reported a high success rate, and this has helped to spread this surgical procedure around the world. The subject has been extensively studied and this could lead researchers to think that no new scientific evidence can be provided. However, new ideas and discoveries show that research never reaches a conclusion, and that new information can be added all the time. This collection aimed to provide new evidence that could be added to daily clinical work and to provide new ideas for future research.

METHODS Maxillary sinus augmentation was performed in 24 New Zealand rabbits. Osteotomy, 4 × 6 mm, were performed bilaterally. A collagenated cortico-cancellous porcine bone was used to fill the elevated region. A collagen membrane was randomly placed over the osteotomy site on one side (MG), and the other side was left uncovered (NMG). The animals were euthanized after 2, 4, and 8 weeks; and histomorphometric analysis was performed in eight different regions. RESULTS New bone percentages were similar in both groups. There were no statistically significant differences. In MG, the overall percentages were 15.6 ± 7.3%, 22.9 ± 6.1%, and 24.9 ± 12.0% after 2, 4, and 8 weeks, respectively. In NMG, the percentages were 11.2 ± 4.5%, 24.1 ± 5.7%, and 24.5 ± 15.7%, respectively. The proportions of new bone in the various regions after 8 weeks were 31 ± 8.9% and 29.9 ± 9.1% in the bone walls region, 25 ± 10.1% and 32.8 ± 9.1% in the submucosa region, 22.6 ± 21.6% and 10.9 ± 11.5 in the middle region, 17.3 ± 14% and 13.4 ± 9.8% in the close-to-window region, and 21.8 ± 11.6%, 19.1 ± 6.4% in the osteotomy region-for MG and NMG, respectively. CONCLUSIONS In both groups the greatest amounts of bone formation occurred near to the pre-existing bone walls, followed by the sub-mucosa region. The smallest amounts were found in the close-to-window region, followed by the central region. The placement of a collagen membrane to cover the osteotomy site did not influence the amount of new bone formation after sinus grafting.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The volumetric and biological behaviors of equine block grafts compared with autogenous block grafts have not yet been assessed. Hence, the aim of the present study was to compare-by means of histomorphometry, immunohistochemistry and microtomography-the graft incorporation and remodeling processes of autogenous and equine xenogenous bone blocks used for mandibular lateral augmentation in rabbits. METHODS Autogenous bone grafts harvested from the iliac bony crest and equine block grafts were secured to the lateral aspect of the mandible angle of eighteen rabbits. The healing after 7, 20 and 60 days was assessed in six animals each period. RESULTS After 60 days, new bone was present 24.2 ± 11.2% and 31.6 ± 13.3% in the autograft and xenograft groups, respectively. A better integration to the recipient sites was observed in the autogenous compared with the xenogenous blocks. CONCLUSIONS Both xenogenous and autogenous bone blocks presented similar percentages of newly formed bone over time. However, bone volume, the quality of the grafted area and graft incorporation to the recipient sites were superior in the autogenous compared with the equine xenogenous graft sites.

Abstract
Background: The treatment of the surface of titanium implants with argon plasma improved its hydrophilicity and cell adhesion, resulting in higher bone apposition on implant and graft surfaces. The spontaneous perforation over time of the sinus mucosa after sinus augmentation has been documented in experimental studies at both implants and graft particles. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of plasma argon treatment of the implant surface on bone apposition and on the rate of sinus mucosa perforations. Methods: A sinus lifting procedure was performed bilaterally in sixteen rabbits, and implants, either treated with argon plasma or left without treatment (control), were placed simultaneously without grafts. After 8 weeks, histological analyses were carried out. Results: A collapse of the sinus mucosa was observed at all implants. Twenty-four out of thirty-two implants presented sinus mucosa perforations at the apex. Several perforations were also found at the threads. Thinned mucosa sites (width < 40 µm) were found around almost all implants. About 2.6–2.9 mm of the apical regions of the implant did not present signs of osseointegration and about 1.3 mm were exposed to the sinus cavity. No statistically significant differences were found between plasma and control sites. Conclusions: In conclusion, the sinus mucosa was damaged and perforated by direct contact with treated and non-treated implant surfaces. The treatment of the implant surface with argon plasma did not affect the outcomes.

Abstract
Acemannan, a linear polysaccharide produced by Aloe vera, has been shown to have important biological effects promoting wound healing and tissue regeneration. The aim of this randomized clinical trial was to investigate the impact of acemannan in guided bone regeneration (GBR) with simultaneous implant placement. Twenty patients were randomly allocated to a test group (deproteinized bovine bone with particulate acemannan (mean size 32.45 μm)) and a control group (deproteinized bovine bone only). Twenty implants were placed with simultaneous GBR. Radiographic measurements were conducted on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans immediately post-surgery and at 3 and 6 months. Vertical and horizontal dimensions of the buccal bone were measured at the implant platform (0) and at points 2, 4, 6, and 8 mm apically. The dimensional reduction of vertical and horizontal buccal bone was significantly smaller in the test group at 3 months postoperative (P < 0.05) at every position measured (0, 2, 4, 6, 8 mm), but the difference was not statistically significant at 6 months. Acemannan was found to be a safe and predictable biomaterial for GBR, which resulted in enhanced dimensional stability of the regenerated tissue at 3 months. However, these results were not replicated at 6 months. Further studies are required to document the long-term efficacy and potential of acemannan use as a supplement in bone regeneration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Due to the lack of data comparing the biological behavior of two formulations, granules and paste, of alloplastic graft from microtomographic and histomorphometric points of view, the aim of the present experiment was to compare the histomorphometric and microtomographic healing of two formulations, i.e., granules (MR sites) or paste (MR-inject sites) of an alloplastic graft composed of a combination of beta-tricalcium phosphate and hydroxyapatite used for maxillary sinus lifting. METHODS A sinus lifting procedure was carried out bilaterally in 20 rabbits, and the elevated space was filled with either paste or granules of an alloplastic material. A collagen membrane was placed on the antrostomy and the animals were euthanized after 2 or 10 weeks, 10 animals each group. Microtomographic and histological analyses were performed. RESULTS Higher proportions of new bone formation were found at the MR, compared to the MR-inject sites both after 2 weeks (2.65 ± 2.89% vs. 0.08 ± 0.12%; p < 0.01) and 10 weeks of healing (34.20 ± 13.86 vs. 23.28 ± 10.35%; p = 0.022). CONCLUSIONS It was concluded that new bone formation was faster in the MR sites, compared to the MR-inject. However, a longer time of healing should be allowed to make final conclusions about the efficiency in bone formation of the paste formulation of the biomaterial used in the present study.

Abstract
Collagenated porcine-derived bone graft materials exhibit osteoconductive properties and the development of different formulations intends to enhance bone regeneration. This study aims to evaluate bone healing in a rabbit cancellous bone defect in response to grafting with different physicochemical forms of heterologous porcine bone. Twenty-six adult male New Zealand White rabbits received two critical size femoral bone defects per animal (n = 52), each randomly assigned to one of the five tested materials (Apatos, Gen-Os, mp3, Putty, and Gel 40). Animals were sacrificed at 15- and 30-days post-surgery. Qualitative and quantitative (new bone, particle and connective tissue percentages) histological analyses were performed. Histomorphometry showed statistically significant differences in all evaluated parameters between mp3 and both Putty and Gel 40 groups, regardless of the timepoint (p < 0.05). Moreover, statistical differences were observed between Apatos and both Putty (p = 0.014) and Gel 40 (p = 0.007) groups, at 30 days, in regard to particle percentage. Within each group, regarding new bone formation, mp3 showed significant differences (p = 0.028) between 15 (40.93 ± 3.49%) and 30 (52.49 ± 11.04%) days. Additionally, intragroup analysis concerning the percentage of particles revealed a significant reduction in particle occupied area from 15 to 30 days in mp3 and Gen-Os groups (p = 0.009). All mp3, Gen-Os and Apatos exhibited promising results in terms of new bone formation, thus presenting suitable alternatives to be used in bone regeneration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the efficacy of a collagenated synthetic bone substitute (C-SBS) to a particulated synthetic bone substitute (P-SBS) in volume maintenance and new bone formations in a rabbit sinus model. MATERIALS AND METHODS Either C-SBS or P-SBS was grafted in both sinuses of 16 rabbits. Four (N = 8) or 12 (N = 8) weeks after the surgery, total augmented volume (TAV) and area (TAA), as well as new bone volume (NBV) and area (NBA), were statistically compared by radiographic and histomorphometric analyses (p < .05). RESULTS The differences in TAV, NBV, TAA and NBA between C-SBS and P-SBS groups at 4 weeks were not statistically significant. The TAV (267.13 ± 62.08 vs. 200.18 ± 40.32 mm3 ) and NBV (103.26 ± 10.50 vs. 71.10 ± 7.58 mm3 ) in group C-SBS were significantly higher than in group P-SBS at 12 weeks (p < .05). The TAA (19.36 ± 2.88 vs. 14.48 ± 2.08 mm2 ) and NBA (5.43 ± 1.20 vs. 3.76 ± 0.78 mm2 ) in group C-SBS were significantly higher than in group P-SBS at 12 weeks (p < .05). CONCLUSIONS Collagenated synthetic bone substitute grafted in rabbit sinuses demonstrated more favourable outcomes across all outcome measures compared to P-SBS at 12 weeks.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the use of demineralized bone matrix of caprine origin in experimental bone defects of the tibia in New Zealand rabbits. Methods Fragments of the tibia diaphysis were collected aseptically from clinically healthy goats. The bones were sectioned into 1 cm fragments and stored at -20°C for subsequent hydrochloric acid (HCL) demineralization. A 70 mg portion of DBMc was used to fill the experimental bone defects. Twenty-four female adult New Zealand rabbits were divided into 2 groups: the MG (matrix group, left tibia) and CG (control group, right tibia). Additionally, they were separated into 4 groups with 6 animals, according to the period of analysis (15, 30, 60 and 90 days postoperatively). Using microCT, volumetric parameters were evaluated: bone volume, relationship between bone volume and total volume, bone surface area, relationship between bone surface area and total volume, number of trabeculae, trabecular thickness and trabecular separation. Results There was a statistically significant difference (P<0.05) between groups considering bone volume (BV) and bone:total volume (BV/TV), on 15, 30 and 90 days postoperatively. Control group showed a statistically significant superiority (P < 0.05) considering the mean of the variables bone surface (BS), number of trabeculae (Tb.N) and between bone surface and total volume (BS/TV) at 15 and 90 days. Conclusions Caprine demineralized bone matrix was safe and tolerable. No signs of material rejection were seen macroscopically. It is an alternative for the treatment of bone defects when autologous graft is not available or in insufficient quantities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In a previous experimental study, new bone was found growing within granules of HA/β-TCP. In vitro and experimental studies have shown increased protein adsorption and cell adhesion graft material bioactivated with Argon plasma. The aims of the present experiment were to study new bone ingrowth into β-TCP/HA granules used as filler material for sinus lifting and the influence on the healing of the bioactivation of the graft with argon plasma. METHODS Sinus lifting was carried out in 20 rabbits using 60% HA and 40% β-TCP as filler material either bio-activated with argon plasma (plasma group) or left untreated (control group). The antrostomies were closed with collagen membranes. Biopsies representing the healing after 2 and 10 weeks were collected, and ground sections were prepared for histomorphometric analyses. Various regions of the elevated space were analyzed both around (outer bone; OB) and inside (interpenetrating bone network, IBN) the graft particles. RESULTS After 2 weeks of healing, 8.2% and 9.3% (n = 10; p = 0.635) of total new bone (OB + IBN) was found in the plasma and control groups, respectively. Small fractions of IBN were found, spreading from the periphery inward of the graft particles. After 10 weeks of healing, the total new bone was 34.0% in the plasma and 31.3% in Control groups (n = 9; p = 0.594). The respective fractions of IBN were 18.0% and 16.0%. New bone was penetrating from the peripheral regions inside the remnants of graft particles, where it was forming a network of bridges in continuity to the remnants of biomaterial through its porosities. The biomaterial decreased in proportion between 2 and 10 weeks from 52.1 to 28.3% in the plasma group, and from 52.5% to 31.9% in the control group. CONCLUSION The bio-activation with argon plasma on a synthetic graft composed of 60% HA and 40% β-TCP used as filler material for sinus lifting showed a tendency to improve bone formation; however, the difference with the control group was neither statistically significant nor clinically relevant.

Abstract
PURPOSE To study the influence of the access window dimensions on the healing at the antrostomy and within the augmented maxillary sinus. MATERIAL AND METHODS A maxillary sinus augmentation was performed in twenty-four albino New Zealand rabbits. Antrostomies of 3 × 6 mm (small) or 5 × 6 mm (large) in dimensions were randomly prepared in each animal. A collagenated cortico-cancellous porcine bone was used to fill the elevated region, and an equine collagen membrane was placed on the antrostomies. Three different groups were formed, based on the time of euthanasia, i.e., 2, 4, and 8 weeks from surgery. RESULTS No relevant changes of the height of the augmented sinus were detected over time. Mineralized bone increased between 2 and 4 weeks of healing while remained stable between 4 and 8 weeks. The highest amounts of new bone were found close to the sinus bone walls. No antrostomies were found healed with an even layer of corticalized bone, while large amounts of connective tissue were occupying the antrostomy in both groups. CONCLUSION Antrostomies of different dimensions resulted in similar outcome in bone formation both in the antrostomy regions and within the elevated sinus.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate histologically the healing of mini-implants installed after sinus floor elevation using a lateral approach and placing the antrostomy at different level from the sinus floor. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sinus floor elevation using a lateral approach was performed in 24 healthy volunteers. The antrostomy was randomly placed either close to the base of the sinus floor (group base) or at about 3-4 mm cranially to it (group standard). After 6 months of healing, mini-implants were installed within the grafted region, through the alveolar crest. Three months later, biopsies were collected. RESULTS Sixteen biopsies from 16 patients were available for histological analyses. The new bone reached fractions of 40.9 ± 11.9% and 48.5 ± 20.1% at the base and standard groups, respectively (p = 0.208). Xenograft particles were found in contact with the implant surface at percentages of 12.1 ± 11.0% in the base group, and 15.9 ± 23.7% in the standard group (p = 0.674). CONCLUSIONS Based on the present study, the choice of one or the other position of antrostomy did not influence significantly the outcome and, therefore, should be left to the preference of the surgeon.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of administering intermittent parathyroid hormone 1-34 [teriparatide, (PTH)] on the maxillary sinus lift and bone grafting in osteoporotic rabbits induced by ovariectomy and glucocorticoid. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ovariectomies were performed on 20 female New Zealand white rabbits that were randomly divided into two groups: (a) the PTH group (n = 10), in which 10 μg kg-1 day-1 PTH was injected subcutaneously 5 days a week for 5 weeks (from 1 week before until 4 weeks after sinus surgery), and (b) the saline group (n = 10), in which saline substituted PTH at the same dose, mode of administration, and duration. Bone grafting with bovine bone mineral was augmented into 13 sinuses, and bone grafts and implants were simultaneously performed in seven sinuses, in both groups. Animals were sacrificed at 4 weeks after surgery. To determine whether PTH was an effective treatment for osteoporosis, we measured the bone mineral density (BMD) of the right femur using micro-computed tomography and performed radiographic and histometric analyses of the maxillary sinus surgery site. The Mann-Whitney test was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS It was found that BMD increased in the femur, whereas none of the radiographic and histometric parameters differed significantly between the groups in the sinus, while there were large interindividual variations within groups. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that intermittent PTH does not promote new bone formation in the augmented maxillary sinus of ovariectomized rabbits.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the present experiment was to compare the data on new bone formation measured histologically and microtomographically in maxillary sinuses augmented with a xenograft with higher density and higher mineral content compared with the natural bone. The hypothesis was that histomorphometric and micro-computed tomography (microCT) analyses do not yield similar outcomes when a xenograft with higher density and mineral content compared with the natural bone is used. METHODS In 18 rabbits, the maxillary sinus was augmented bilaterally using deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) xenograft granules of either 0.125-1 mm or 1-2 mm of dimensions. The rabbits were euthanized after 2, 4, and 8 weeks of healing. Comparisons were performed between microCT and histological analyses. RESULTS After 2 weeks of healing, higher contents of bone were found at the histological compared with the microCT analyses in both sinuses, especially in the middle regions of the grafted sinus. Between 2 and 8 weeks of healing, new bone increased of about 21% at the histological analyses while, at the microCT, increased only about 4%. In the same period, the xenograft proportion decreased from 51.6 ± 4.9 to 45.3 ± 3.3% at the histological analyses while, at the microCT, the xenograft appeared to increase in percentages. CONCLUSION Histological and microCT analyses yielded different outcomes when a xenograft with higher density and higher mineral content compared with the natural bone was used.
