Abstract
![]()
While Mn-catalyzed (de)hydrogenation of carbonyl derivatives
has
been well established, the reactivity of Mn hydrides with olefins
remains very rare. Herein, we report a Mn(I) pincer complex that effectively
promotes site-controlled transposition of olefins. This reactivity
is shown to emerge once the N–H functionality within the Mn/NH
bifunctional complex is suppressed by alkylation. While detrimental
for carbonyl (de)hydrogenation, such masking of the cooperative N–H
functionality allows for the highly efficient conversion of a wide
range of allylarenes to higher-value 1-propenybenzenes in near-quantitative
yield with excellent stereoselectivities. The reactivity toward a
single positional isomerization was also retained for long-chain alkenes,
resulting in the highly regioselective formation of 2-alkenes, which
are less thermodynamically stable compared to other possible isomerization
products. The detailed mechanistic analysis of the reaction between
the activated Mn catalyst and olefins points to catalysis operating
via a metal–alkyl mechanism—one of the three conventional
transposition mechanisms previously unknown in Mn complexes.

Abstract
In a combined experimental and computational study, the isomerization activity of the dinuclear palladium(I) complex [PdI(μ‐Br)(PtBu3)]2 towards allyl arenes, esters, amides, ethers, and alcohols has been investigated. The calculated energy profiles for catalyst activation for two alternative dinuclear and mononuclear catalytic cycles, and for catalyst deactivation are in good agreement with the experimental results. Comparison of experimentally observed E/Z ratios at incomplete conversion with calculated kinetic selectivities revealed that a substantial amount of product must form via the dinuclear pathway, in which the isomerization is promoted cooperatively by two palladium centers. The dissociation barrier towards mononuclear Pd species is relatively high, and once the catalyst enters the energetically more favorable mononuclear pathway, only a low barrier has to be overcome towards irreversible deactivation.

Abstract
Iron-catalyzed isomerization of alkenes is reported using an iron(II) β-diketiminate pre-catalyst. The reaction proceeds with a catalytic amount of a hydride source, such as pinacol borane (HBpin) or ammonia borane (H3 N⋅BH3 ). Reactivity with both allyl arenes and aliphatic alkenes has been studied. The catalytic mechanism was investigated by a variety of means, including deuteration studies, Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The data obtained support a pre-catalyst activation step that gives access to an η2 -coordinated alkene FeI complex, followed by oxidative addition of the alkene to give an FeIII intermediate, which then undergoes reductive elimination to allow release of the isomerization product.

Abstract
Herein, we report an iron-catalyzed, convenient, and expedient strategy for the synthesis of styrene and naphthalene derivatives with the liberation of dihydrogen. The use of a catalyst derived from an earth-abundant metal provides a sustainable strategy to olefins. This method exhibits wide substrate scope (primary and secondary alcohols) functional group tolerance (amino, nitro, halo, alkoxy, thiomethoxy, and S- and N-heterocyclic compounds) that can be scaled up. The unprecedented synthesis of 1-methyl naphthalenes proceeds via tandem methenylation/double dehydrogenation. Mechanistic study shows that the cleavage of the C-H bond of alcohol is the rate-determining step.

Abstract
We report herein that thermodynamic and kinetic isomerization of alkenes can be accomplished by the combination of visible light with Co catalysis. Utilizing Xantphos as the ligand, the most stable isomers are obtained, while isomerizing terminal alkenes over one position can be selectively controlled by using DPEphos as the ligand. The presence of the donor–acceptor dye 4CzIPN accelerates the reaction further. Transformation of exocyclic alkenes into the corresponding endocyclic products could be efficiently realized by using 4CzIPN and Co(acac)2 in the absence of any additional ligands. Spectroscopic and spectroelectrochemical investigations indicate CoI being involved in the generation of a Co hydride, which subsequently adds to alkenes initiating the isomerization.

Abstract
Organometallic Fe complexes with exceptionally high activities in homogeneous epoxidation catalysis are reported. The compounds display Fe(II) and Fe(III) oxidation states and bear a tetracarbene ligand. The more active catalyst exhibits activities up to 183 000 turnovers per hour at room temperature and turnover numbers of up to 4300 at -30 °C. For the Fe(III) complex, a decreased Fenton-type reactivity is observed compared with Fe(II) catalysts reported previously as indicated by a substantially lower H2 O2 decomposition and higher (initial) turnover frequencies. The dependence of the catalyst performance on the catalyst loading, substrate, water addition, and the oxidant is investigated. Under all applied conditions, the advantageous nature of the use of the Fe(III) complex is evident.

Abstract
One of the most important challenges in catalyst design is the synthesis of stable promoters without compromising their activity. For this reason, it is important to understand the factors leading to decomposition of such catalysts, especially if side-products negatively affect the activity and selectivity of the starting complex. In this context, the understanding of termination and decomposition processes in olefin metathesis is receiving significant attention from the scientific community. For example, the decomposition of ruthenium olefin metathesis precatalysts in alcohol solutions can occur during either the catalyst synthesis or the metathesis process, and such decomposition has been found to be common for Grubbs-type precatalysts. These decomposition products are usually hydridocarbonyl complexes, which are well-known to be active in several transformations such as hydrogenation, terminal alkene isomerization, and C-H activation chemistry. The reactivity of these side products can be unwanted, and it is therefore important to understand how to avoid them and maybe also important to keep an open mind and think of ways to use these in other catalytic reactions. A showcase of these decomposition studies is reported in this Account. These reports analyze the stability of ruthenium phenylindenylidene complexes, highly active olefin metathesis precatalysts, in basic alcohol solutions. Several different decomposition processes can occur under these conditions depending on the starting complex and the alcohol used. These indenylidene-bearing metathesis complexes display a completely different behavior compared with that of other metathesis precatalysts and show an alternative competitive alcoholysis pathway, where rather than forming the expected hydrido carbonyl complexes, the indenylidene fragment is transformed into a η(1)-indenyl, which then rearranges to its η(5)-indenyl form. In particular, [RuCl(η(5)-(3-phenylindenylidene)(PPh3)2] has been found to be extremely active in numerous transformations (at least 20) as well as compatible with a broad range of reaction conditions, rendering it a versatile catalytic tool. It should be stated that the η(5)-phenyl indenyl ligand shows enhanced catalytic activity over related half-sandwich ruthenium complexes. The analogous half-sandwich (cyclopentadienyl and indenyl) ruthenium complexes show lower activity in transfer hydrogenation and allylic alcohol isomerization reactions. In addition, this catalyst allows access to new phenylindenyl ruthenium complexes, which can be achieved in a very straightforward manner and have been successfully used in catalysis. This Account provides an overview of how mechanistic insights into decomposition and stability of a well-known family of ruthenium metathesis precatalysts has resulted in a series of novel and versatile ruthenium complexes with unexpected reactivity.

Abstract
In this perspective, the HERFD-XANES (high energy resolution fluorescence detected X-ray absorption near edge structure) and Kβ2,5- or V2C-XES (valence-to-core X-ray emission spectroscopy) methods are discussed as new and powerful tools for chemical research with hard X-rays. This includes a brief survey of the underlying physical processes and the introduction of experimental issues. The potential of both methods to overcome limitations of conventional XAS (X-ray absorption spectroscopy) and to push the limits for obtaining new information about the electronic and geometric structures of metal centers, in the solid state structure or heterogeneous catalysts, but also in metal complexes and homogeneous catalysts, is discussed by presenting a survey of representative references and recent own studies, rounded off by a conclusion and outlook.
