Abstract
A robust supported catalyst that is made up of copper nanoparticles on Celite has been successfully prepared for the selective transfer hydrogenation of aromatic nitrobenzenes to anilines under continuous flow. The method is efficient and environmentally benign thanks to the absence of hydrogen gas and precious metals. Long-term stability studies show that the catalytic system is able to achieve very high nitrobenzene conversion (>99%) when working for up to 145 h. The versatility of the transfer hydrogenation system has been tested using representative examples of nitroarenes, with moderate-to-excellent yields being obtained. The packed bed reactor (PBR) permits the use of a setup that can provide products via simple isolation by SPE without the need for further purification. The recovery and reuse of either EG or the ion-exchange resin leads to consistent waste reduction; therefore, E-factor distribution analysis has highlighted the environmental efficiency of this synthetic protocol.

Abstract
The selective hydrogenation of 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) into 2,5-bis-(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydrofuran (BHMTHF) in flow reactor using water as a green solvent, has been achieved on a non-noble metal catalyst based on monodispersed CoNi alloy nanoparticles covered by a thin carbon layer. The alloyed catalyst containing CoNi (molar ratio 1 : 1) was prepared in a one-step synthesis following a hydrothermal method. Total conversion of HMF with 91 % selectivity to BHMTHF was achieved. The reaction network has been stablished, in which the carbonyl group of HMF is first reduced to alcohol giving the 2,5-bis-(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF) with an apparent activation energy of 25 KJ/mol, and then the double bonds of the furan ring are hydrogenated (apparent Ea=31 KJ/mol). Formation of byproducts, mainly proceed from furan ring opening and ring rearrangement processes of BHMF, promoted by water. BHMTHF resulted a compound highly stable under reaction conditions. The fixed bed flow reactor was maintained operational for 65 h without observing any loss of catalytic activity and selectivity.

Abstract
5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a versatile platform chemical derived from the dehydration of renewable carbohydrates (typically glucose/fructose-based monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides). Some useful compounds, such as 2,5-furandimethanol (FDM), 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) and 2,5-dimethyltetrahydrofuran (DMTHF), have been synthesized by reduction of HMF. Among these, FDM is a promising diol and can be further converted towards fine chemicals, liquid fuels and polymer materials. In this review, some typical catalytic systems for the synthesis of FDM from both HMF and carbohydrates were summarized. The discussion focused on controlling the reaction networks for the reduction of HMF. The reaction mechanisms and the stability of the catalysts were introduced briefly. Last but not least, the prospects of effective production of FDM were discussed as well.

Abstract
Replacing fossil-based polymers with renewable bio-based polymers is one of the most promising ways to solve the environmental issues and climate change we human beings are facing. The production of new lignocellulose-based polymers involves five steps, including (1) fractionation of lignocellulose into cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin; (2) depolymerization of the fractionated cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin into carbohydrates and aromatic compounds; (3) catalytic or thermal conversion of the depolymerized carbohydrates and aromatic compounds to platform chemicals; (4) further conversion of the platform chemicals to the desired bio-based monomers; (5) polymerization of the above monomers to bio-based polymers by suitable polymerization methods. This review article will focus on the progress of bio-based monomers derived from lignocellulose, in particular the preparation of bio-based monomers from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) and vanillin, and their polymerization methods. The latest research progress and application scenarios of related bio-based polymeric materials will be also discussed, as well as future trends in bio-based polymers.

Abstract
Diamines are important industrial chemicals. In this paper we outline the feasibility of lignocellulose as a source of diol-containing molecules. We also illustrate the possibility of turning these diols into their diamines in good to excellent yields. Central to these transformations is the use of commercially available Raney Ni. For diol formation, the Raney Ni engages in hydrogenation and often also demethoxylation, that way funneling multiple components to one single molecule. For diamine formation, Raney Ni catalyzes hydrogen-borrowing mediated diamination in the presence of NH3.

Abstract
Cu-containing layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were synthesized by a co-precipitation method at different reaction conditions, such as aging time, pH, precipitation rate and synthesis temperature. The effect of these parameters on the structure and chemical composition of the catalysts were investigated using a set of physical methods, including thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), H2-TPR and in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It allowed for checking of the reducibility of the samples. 5-Acetoxymethylfurfural was catalytically hydrogenated to 5-(acetoxymethyl)-2-furanmethanol (AMFM) over Cu-containing catalysts synthesized from layered double hydroxides so as to investigate its catalytic properties in flow reaction. It was shown that synthesis pH decreasing from 10 to 8 resulted in rise of AMF conversion that coincided with the higher surface Cu/Al ratio obtained by XPS. Preferable aging time of LDH materials for obtaining the most active catalyst was 2 h, an amount of time that favored the production of the catalyst with high surface Cu/Al ratio up to 0.38. Under optimized reaction conditions, the AMFM yield was 98%. Finally, a synthesis strategy for the preparation of highly efficient Cu-based hydrogenation catalyst with optimized characteristics is suggested.

Abstract
5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is an important bio-derived platform molecule that is generally obtained from hexoses via acid-catalyzed dehydration. It can be effectively transformed into a variety of value-added derivatives, thus being an ideal candidate for fossil replacement. Both HMF oxidation and hydrogenation processes enable the synthesis of numerous chemicals, monomers for polymerization, and biofuel precursors. This Review summarizes the most recent advances in heterogeneous catalytic hydroconversion of HMF into valuable chemicals with strong focus on 2,5-bishydroxymethyl furan (BHMF), 2,5-bishydroxymethyltetrahydrofuran (BHMTHF), and 2,5-dimethyltetrahydrofuran (DMTHF). In addition, multifunctional catalytic systems that enable a tunable production of various HMF derived intermediates are discussed. Within this chemistry, the surprising impact of HMF purity on the catalytic performance, such as selectivity and activity, during its upgrading is highlighted. Lastly, the remaining challenges in the field of HMF hydroconversion to the mentioned chemicals are summarized and discussed, taking into account the knowledge gain of catalyst properties and feedstock purity.

Abstract
The hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has been carried out either under single (aqueous) phase or batch multiphase (MP) conditions using mutually immiscible aqueous/hydrocarbon phases, 5 % Ru/C as a catalyst, and both with and without the use of trioctylmethyl phosphonium bis-(trifluoro methane) sulfonimide ([P8881 ][NTf2 ]) as an ionic liquid (IL). Alternatively, the hydrogenation of HMF was explored in the continuous-flow (CF) mode with the same catalyst. By changing reaction parameters, experiments were optimized towards the formation of three products: 2,5-bis(hydroxy methyl)furan (BHMF), 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydrofuran (BHMTHF), and 1-hydroxyhexane-2,5-dione (HHD), which were obtained in up to 92, 90, and 99 % selectivity, respectively, at quantitative conversion. In particular, the single (aqueous) phase reaction of HMF (0.2 m) carried out for 18 h at 60 °C under 30 bar of H2 , allowed the exclusive synthesis of BHMF from the partial (carbonyl) hydrogenation of HMF, while the MP reaction run at a higher T and p (100 °C and 50 bar) proved excellent to achieve only HHD derived from a sequence of hydrogenation/hydrogenolysis. It is worth noting that under MP conditions, the catalyst was perfectly segregated in the IL, where it could be recycled without any leaching in the aqueous/hydrocarbon phases. Finally, the hydrogenation of HMF was explored in a H-Cube® flow reactor in the presence of different solvents, such as ethyl acetate, tetrahydrofuran, and ethanol. At 100 °C, 50 bar H2 , and a flow rate of 0.1 mL min-1 , the process was optimized towards the formation of the full hydrogenation product BHMTHF. Ethyl acetate proved the best solvent.

Abstract
2,5-Bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF) as well as furfuryl alcohol (FFA) are considered as highly valuable biomass-derived alcohols resembling aromatic monomers in polymer synthesis. Herein, a series of cobaltic nitrogen-doped carbon (Co-NC) catalysts calcinated at different temperatures were synthesized and tested for the solvent-free hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to prepare BHMF. It was found that the Co-NC catalyst calcinated at 600 °C (Co-NC-600) exhibited a superior catalytic activity in the hydrogenation reaction mainly due to the doping of graphitic N, which probably facilitated the polarization of H2 to afford H+ and H- . Consequently, Co-NC-600 offered a high BHMF/FFA yield greater than 90 % with a nearly complete conversion of HMF/furfural (FF) at the optimal conditions (80 °C, 4 h, and 5 MPa H2 ). After the hydrogenation reaction, Co-NC catalyst was facilely recycled by magnetic separation, and the obtained BHMF/FFA was then successfully transformed into hypercrosslinked polymers with an excellent CO2 /H2 storage capacity comparable to aromatic hydroxymethyl polymers. Therefore, this is a novel and facile two-step pathway for the conversion of biomass-derived HMF/FF towards functional polymers from both industrial and environmental perspectives.

Abstract
5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has been regarded as an essential building block for synthesizing chemicals and biofuels, but the direct conversion of biomass to HMF is still a critical challenge. In this study, a cheap and green aqueous-natural deep eutectic solvent (A-NADES) was used to efficiently produce HMF from various carbohydrates, with a low amount of SnCl4 as the catalyst. High HMF yields of 64.3, 64.0, 61.3, and 54.5 % were obtained from glucose, starch, rice waste, and bread waste at 130 °C in the A-NADES/MIBK (methyl isobutyl ketone) biphasic system, respectively. Mechanistic study results revealed that the water in A-NADES was the key factor in facilitating the conversion of Sn atom existent forms and promoted the HMF production. The choline chloride in NADES stabilized the HMF product with the cooperation of extraction solvent MIBK and inhibited the side reactions of HMF. This study investigated the multiple interaction functions of A-NADES to feedstocks and proposed a practical application of novel solvents to facilitate biomass and food waste conversion with a green method.

Abstract
The depletion of fossil resources is driving the research towards alternative renewable ones. Under this perspective, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) represents a key molecule deriving from biomass characterized by remarkable potential as platform chemical. In this work, for the first time, the hydrogenation of HMF in ethanol was selectively addressed towards 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF) or 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydrofuran (BHMTHF) by properly tuning the reaction conditions in the presence of the same commercial catalyst (Ru/C), reaching the highest yields of 80 and 93 mol%, respectively. These diols represent not only interesting monomers but strategic precursors for two scarcely investigated ethoxylated biofuels, 2,5-bis(ethoxymethyl)furan (BEMF) and 2,5-bis(ethoxymethyl)tetrahydrofuran (BEMTHF). Therefore, the etherification with ethanol of pure BHMF and BHMTHF and of crude BHMF, as obtained from hydrogenation step, substrates scarcely investigated in the literature, was performed with several commercial heterogeneous acid catalysts. Among them, the zeolite HZSM-5 (Si/Al=25) was the most promising system, achieving the highest BEMF yield of 74 mol%. In particular, for the first time, the synthesis of the fully hydrogenated diether BEMTHF was thoroughly studied, and a novel cascade process for the tailored conversion of HMF to the diethyl ethers BEMF and BEMTHF was proposed.

Abstract
The catalytic conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfufural (HMF), one of the vital platform chemicals in biomass upgrading, holds great promise for producing highly valuable chemicals through sustainable routes, thereby alleviating the dependence on fossil feedstocks and reducing CO2 emissions. The reductive upgrading (hydrogenation, hydrogenolysis, ring-opening, ring-rearrangement, amination, etc.) of HMF has exhibited great potential to produce monomers, liquid fuel additives, and other valuable chemicals. Thermocatalytic conversion has a significant advantage over photocatalysis and electrocatalysis in productivity. In this Review, the recent achievements of thermo-reductive transformation of HMF to various chemicals using heterogeneous catalytic systems are presented, including the catalytic systems (catalyst and solvent), reaction conditions, (reaction temperature, pressure, etc.), and reaction mechanisms. The current challenges and future opportunities are discussed as well, aiming at guiding the catalyst design and practical scalable productions.

Abstract
The efficient catalysis of the hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) over non noble-metal catalysts has received great attention in recent years. However, the reaction usually requires harsh conditions, such as high reaction temperature and excessively long reaction time, which limits the application of the non noble-metal catalysts. In this work, a bimetallic Co x -Cu@C catalyst was prepared via the pyrolysis of MOFs, and an 85% DMF yield was achieved under a reaction temperature and time of 160 °C and 3 h, respectively. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) mapping, and other characterization techniques showed that the synthesis method in this paper realized the in situ loading of cobalt into the copper catalyst. The reaction mechanism studies revealed that the cobalt doping effectively enhanced the hydrogenation activity of the copper-based catalyst on the C-O bond at a low temperature. Moreover, the bimetallic Co x -Cu@C catalyst exhibited superior reusability without any loss in the activity when subjected to five testing rounds.

Abstract
Reactions of biomass conversions are of great importance in fine chemistry for substantial development. While numerous studies have been performed to search for functional materials to catalyze biomass conversions, a robust and high-throughput analytical method is rather limited, which may hamper further integration and automation of the reactions. Here we propose an automatic and sequential method for the investigation of glucose conversion. By combining sequential sample injection and high-speed capillary electrophoresis (HSCE) techniques, we can monitor the glucose conversion from the beginning toward the end with a good temporal resolution. The HSCE assays are performed using short capillaries (effective length of 10 cm, i.d./o.d. of 50 μm/365 μm), and the analytes are separated at an electric field of 467 V/cm and are detected by UV-absorption at 200 nm with mixed 0.2 mM CTAB, 10 mM borate, 20 mM sorbic acid (pH 12.2) as the background electrolyte. All compounds involved in the reaction, including all products (fructose, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, formic acid and levulinic acid) and the remaining substrate glucose, are efficiently separated and simultaneously detected from just one analysis with a temporal resolution of one minute. The method exhibits high-resolution separation, a wide linear range with limit-of-detection down to μg/mL-level, as well as excellent repeatability in sequential analysis. It is indicated that the proposed method is of great value in the analysis of complicated biomass conversion and could be potentially applied in various catalytic chemical reactions.

Abstract
Transformation of biomass to chemicals and fuels is a long-term goal in both science and industry. However, high cost is one of the major obstacles to the industrialization of this sustainable technology. Thus, developing catalysts with high activity and low-cost is of great importance for biomass conversion. The last two decades have witnessed the increasing achievement of the use of earth-abundant 3d-transition-metals in catalysis due to their low-cost, high efficiency and excellent stability. Here, we aim to review the fast development and recent advances of 3d-metal-based catalysts including Cu, Fe, Co, Ni and Mn in lignocellulosic biomass conversion. Moreover, present research trends and invigorating perspectives on future development are given.

Abstract
The ruthenium complexes [Ru(H3CC(CH2PPh2)3-κ3-P)(NCCH3)3](OTf)2 (1, (H3CC(CH2PPh2)3 = triphos) and [Ru(N(CH2PPh2)3-κ3-P)(NCCH3)3](OTf)2 (2, N(CH2PPh2)3 = N-triphos) have been evaluated as homogeneous ionic hydrogenation catalysts for the catalytic hydrodeoxygenation of furfuryl alcohol and furfuryl acetate to 1,4-pentanediol and cyclopentanol in aqueous media reaction mixtures. For furfuryl alcohol, only marginal yields of 1,4-pentanediol could be achieved with mass balance deficiencies due to humin formation ranging from 67% to 90%. Attempts to improve the catalytic activity of 2 by enhancing its water solubility by nitrogen protonation and (or) methylation failed. Employing the less self-reactive furfuryl acetate as the substrate substantially diminishes humin formation, yielding up to 43% of 1,4-pentanediol and 19% of cyclopentanol (via Piancatelli rearrangement) with 1 and up to 33% of 1,4-pentanediol and 5% of cyclopentanol with 2. A design of experiments study was used to determine and compare the yield responses of the multiple parallel reaction channels with 1,4-pentanediol, cyclopentanol, and humins as a function of reaction temperature, time, catalyst load, and substrate concentration. This explores the correlations between these parameters and their impact on the reaction outcome and suggests an extremely complex overall reaction cascade of interdependent pathways of both acid- and metal-catalyzed steps with some significant differences emerging between the two catalysts.

Abstract
A novel composite based on kappa-Carrageenan (κC) was prepared using N,N-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) as the crosslinking agent. 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) was produced by catalytic dehydration of fructose and glucose with MBA grafted κC (κC-g-MBA) as the solid acid catalyst due to sulfonic acid groups in biopolymer skeletons. Various reaction parameters such as optimization of the quantity of the catalyst, temperature, reaction time, and solvent were performed. It was established that for fructose dehydration, the best reaction conditions were the 160 °C as the optimized reaction temperature and 1 h reaction time, respectively. Under these conditions, the HMF yield and fructose conversion were 94.2% and 95.5%, respectively. Furthermore, 160 °C and 2 h were the best reaction temperature and reaction time for glucose dehydration, respectively. Under similar conditions, the HMF yield and glucose conversion are 47% and 93%, respectively. The catalyst was readily prepared from inexpensive materials with considerable reusability and reactivity.

Abstract
Aminomethylhydroxymethylfuran derivatives are well known compounds which are used in the pharmaceutical industry. Reductive amination of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) derived from available non-edible lignocellulosic biomass is an attractive method for the synthesis of this class of compounds. In the present study, the synthesis of N-substituted 5-(hydroxymethyl)-2-furfuryl amines and 5-(acetoxymethyl)-2-furfuryl amines was performed by two-step process, which includes the condensation of furanic aldehydes (HMF and 5-acetoxymethylfurfural) with primary amines in methanol on the first step and the reduction of obtained imines with hydrogen in a flow reactor over CuAlOx catalyst derived from layered double hydroxide on the second step. This process does not require isolation and purification of intermediate imines and can be used to synthesize a number of aminomethylhydroxymethylfurans in good to excellent yield.

Abstract
The ever increasing industrial production of commodity and specialty chemicals inexorably depletes the finite primary fossil resources available on Earth. The forecast of population growth over the next 3 decades is a very strong incentive for the identification of alternative primary resources other than petro-based ones. In contrast with fossil resources, renewable biomass is a virtually inexhaustible reservoir of chemical building blocks. Shifting the current industrial paradigm from almost exclusively petro-based resources to alternative bio-based raw materials requires more than vibrant political messages; it requires a profound revision of the concepts and technologies on which industrial chemical processes rely. Only a small fraction of molecules extracted from biomass bears significant chemical and commercial potentials to be considered as ubiquitous chemical platforms upon which a new, bio-based industry can thrive. Owing to its inherent assets in terms of unique process experience, scalability, and reduced environmental footprint, flow chemistry arguably has a major role to play in this context. This review covers a selection of C2 to C6 bio-based chemical platforms with existing commercial markets including polyols (ethylene glycol, 1,2-propanediol, 1,3-propanediol, glycerol, 1,4-butanediol, xylitol, and sorbitol), furanoids (furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural) and carboxylic acids (lactic acid, succinic acid, fumaric acid, malic acid, itaconic acid, and levulinic acid). The aim of this review is to illustrate the various aspects of upgrading bio-based platform molecules toward commodity or specialty chemicals using new process concepts that fall under the umbrella of continuous flow technology and that could change the future perspectives of biorefineries.

Abstract
Lignocellulosic biomass can be converted to significant platform molecule 5-
hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), from which one can envision a number of biofuels and
chemicals through either chemical or biological conversions. Chemoselective hydrogenation
is one of the important pathways for the upgrading of HMF into furanyl diols consisting
of 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF) and 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydrofuran
(BHMTHF). BHMF and BHMTHF are all-purpose intermediates for the manufacture of
chemicals, fuels, and functional materials. In this context, we comprehensively summarized
the studies on the chemoselective hydrogenation of HMF into furanyl diols in terms
of different H-donors, including molecular H2, alcohols, formic acid, and other alternative
H-donors. Through the systematic survey of the previous works, a feasible research direction
is discussed for the production of furanyl diols.

Abstract
Heterogeneous catalytic conversion of lignocellulosic components into valuable chemicals and biofuels is one of the promising ways for biomass valorization, which well meets green chemistry metrics, and can alleviate environmental and economic issues caused by the rapid depletion of fossil fuels. Among the identified biomass derivatives, furfural (FF) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) stand out as rich building blocks and can be directly produced from pentose and hexose sugars, respectively. In the past decades, much attention has been attracted to the selective hydrogenation of FF and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural using various heterogeneous catalysts. This review evaluates the recent progress of developing different heterogeneous catalytic materials, such as noble/non-noble metal particles, solid acids/bases, and alkali metal salts, for the efficient reduction of bio-based furanic aldehydes to alcohols. Emphasis is laid on the insights and challenges encountered in those biomass transformation processes, along with the focus on the understanding of reaction mechanisms to clarify the catalytic role of specific active species. Brief outlook is also made for further optimization of the catalytic systems and processes for the upgrading of biofuranic compounds.

Abstract
Low chemical stability and high oxygen content limit utilization of the bio-based platform chemical 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) in biofuels development. In this work, Lewis-acid-catalyzed conversion of renewable 6-deoxy sugars leading to formation of more stable 5-methylfurfural (MF) is carried out with high selectivity. Besides its higher stability, MF is a deoxygenated analogue of HMF with increased C/O ratio. A highly selective synthesis of the innovative liquid biofuel 2,5-dimethylfuran starting from MF under mild conditions is described. The superior synthetic utility of MF against HMF in benzoin and aldol condensation reactions leading to long-chain alkane precursors is demonstrated.

Abstract
Furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural stand out as bridges connecting biomass raw materials to the biorefinery industry. Their reductive transformations by hydroconversion are key routes toward a wide variety of chemicals and biofuels, and heterogeneous catalysis plays a central role in these reactions. The catalyst efficiency highly depends on the nature of metals, supports, and additives, on the catalyst preparation procedure, and obviously on reaction conditions to which catalyst and reactants are exposed: solvent, pressure, and temperature. The present review focuses on the roles played by the catalyst at the molecular level in the hydroconversion of furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural in the gas or liquid phases, including catalytic hydrogen transfer routes and electro/photoreduction, into oxygenates or hydrocarbons (e.g., furfuryl alcohol, 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan, cyclopentanone, 1,5-pentanediol, 2-methylfuran, 2,5-dimethylfuran, furan, furfuryl ethers, etc.). The mechanism of adsorption of the reactant and the mechanism of the reaction of hydroconversion are correlated to the specificities of each active metal, both noble (Pt, Pd, Ru, Au, Rh, and Ir) and non-noble (Ni, Cu, Co, Mo, and Fe), with an emphasis on the role of the support and of additives on catalytic performances (conversion, yield, and stability). The reusability of catalytic systems (deactivation mechanism, protection, and regeneration methods) is also discussed.
