Abstract
The selectivity of 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA) was studied in a batch bioreactor and microbioreactors with different internal diameters (ID). Using microbioreactors, the effect of the flow rate of the liquid and gas phase on the yield, space time yield (STYFFCA), and gas-liquid mixture velocity (UM) of the reaction was evaluated. The biooxidation in flow microbioreactors, a selectivity of 100 % for FFCA was achieved, while with the batch bioreactor at the same substrate concentration a selectivity of 6.7 % was obtained. The highest yield (30 %) with 15 mM of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was reached at a gas-liquid flow rate of 0.5 µL/min and the highest STYFFCA (0.07 mol m-3 min-1) was achieved at a gas-liquid flow rate of 1.5 µL/min with the microbioreactor with an ID of 0.5 mm. The UM values (0.5 to 1.6 cm min1) indicated that the reaction takes place under a kinetic regime without mass transfer limitations.

Abstract
Oxygen vacancies (Vo) present in CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) can effectively boost their photocatalytic activity under ultraviolet (UV) light. To improve photocatalytic performance, Cr- and Fe-doped CeO2 NPs with increased Vo were prepared using a simple method of doping Cr and Fe ions into CeO2 NPs, which was confirmed by an in-depth analysis of the structural and electronic changes. Through photocatalytic degradation (PCD) experiments with 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), we found that the PCD rates of the two doped CeO2 NPs were faster than that of the CeO2 NPs. In addition, the conversion of HMF to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) using the doped CeO2 NPs occurred only through the mechanism of the selective oxidation to 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HMFCA), exhibiting better efficiency than using CeO2 NPs.

Abstract
Three different multiphase systems (MP 1-3) comprised of two immiscible liquids, with or without an ionic liquid (IL: methyltrioctyl ammonium chloride), were investigated for the oxidation of 5-hydroxymethyl-furfural (HMF) over 5 % Ru/C as a catalyst and air (8 bar) as an oxidant. These conditions proved versatile for an excellent control of the reaction selectivity to 4 distinct products derived from full or partial oxidation of the carbonyl and alcohol functions of HMF, and each one achieved in 87-96 % isolated yield at complete conversion. MP1 based on water and isooctane, yielded 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA, 91 % yield). In MP2, obtained by adding the IL to MP1, the oxidation proceeded towards the formation of 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA, 87-89 % yield). MP2 also proved successful in the design of a one pot-two step oxidation/reduction sequence to prepare 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HMFCA, 85 % yield). In MP3, the use of an acetonitrile/cyclooctane biphase yielded 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF, 96 % yield). All the multiphase systems MP 1-3 allowed a perfect segregation of the catalyst in a single phase (either the hydrocarbon or the IL) distinct from the one containing HMF and its oxidation products. This was crucial not only for the catalyst/product separation but also for the recycle of Ru/C that was possible under all the tested conditions. Accordingly, MP-reaction were run in a semicontinuous mode without removing the catalyst from the reactor nor resorting to conventional separation and activation techniques. Negligible Ru leaching, less than 0.96 ppb, was measured in all cases.

Abstract
Conversion of biomass into biofuels and high value-added chemicals is a promising strategy to solve the increasingly deteriorating environmental problems caused by fossil energy consumption. The development of efficient technologies and methods is the premise and guarantee to realize the high-value conversion of biomass. 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), as a versatile biomass platform compound, is generated via dehydration of hexoses (e. g., fructose and glucose) derived from cellulosic biomass. This Review gives an overview of the advances and challenges of electro- and photocatalytic oxidation of biomass-derived HMF to high-value chemicals such as 2,5-formylfuran (DFF) and 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). These strategies and methods for the preparation of high-value chemicals by electro- and photocatalytic oxidation of HMF, coupled with, for example, hydrogen evolution reaction, organic substrate reduction, CO2 reduction reaction, or N2 reduction reaction, were summarized and discussed. Moreover, the catalytic efficiency and mechanism of different types of catalysts were also introduced in these conversion systems.

Abstract
5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) as a triply catalytic product is a value-added refining chemical in industry production. 5-HMF as biomass feedstock enables to be transformed into other high-value industrial compounds, such as 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (HMFCA), 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA), 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF), 2,5-bis(aminomethyl)furan (BAMF), and 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF). Hence, catalytic conversion of biomass into 5-HMF has been given much more attention by chemists. In this review, some latest studies about the conversion of cellulose to 5-HMF have been introduced systematically. Solid acids such as heterogeneous catalysts have been widely applied in the conversion of cellulose into 5-HMF. Therefore, some novel solid acids with Brønsted and/or Lewis acidic sites, such as sulfonated solid acids, carbon-based acids, and zeolite particles employed for biomass conversions are listed.

Abstract
The biomass-derived alcohol oxidation reaction (BDAOR) holds great promise for sustainable production of chemicals. However, selective electrooxidation of alcohols to value-added aldehyde compounds is still challenging. Herein, we report the electrocatalytic BDAORs to selectively produce aldehydes using single-atom ruthenium on nickel oxide (Ru1 -NiO) as a catalyst in the neutral medium. For electrooxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), Ru1 -NiO exhibits a low potential of 1.283 V at 10 mA cm-2 , and an optimal 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) selectivity of 90 %. Experimental studies reveal that the neutral electrolyte plays a critical role in achieving a high aldehyde selectivity, and the single-atom Ru boosts HMF oxidation in the neutral medium by promoting water dissociation to afford OH*. Furthermore, Ru1 -NiO can be extended to selective electrooxidation of a series of biomass-derived alcohols to corresponding aldehydes, which are conventionally difficult to obtain in the alkaline medium.

Abstract
Hydrogen binding of molecules on solid surfaces is an attractive interaction that can be used as the driving force for bond activation, material-directed assembly, protein protection, etc. However, the lack of a quantitative characterization method for hydrogen bonds (HBs) on surfaces seriously limits its application. We measured the standard Gibbs free energy change (ΔG0 ) of on-surface HBs using NMR. The HB-accepting ability of the surface was investigated by comparing ΔG0 values employing the model biomass platform 5-hydroxymethylfurfural on a series of Co-N-C-n catalysts with adjustable electron-rich nitrogen-doped contents. Decreasing ΔG0 improves the HB-accepting ability of the nitrogen-doped surface and promotes the selectively initiated activation of O-H bonds in the oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. As a result, the reaction kinetics is accelerated. In addition to the excellent catalytic performance, the turnover frequency (TOF) for this oxidation is much higher than for reported non-noble-metal catalysts.

Abstract
Nitrogen doped carbon spheres with wrinkled cages (NCSWCs), which were used for the first time as metal-free catalysts, exhibited high catalytic activity and selectivity in the oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA) under base-free conditions using tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as the oxidant. The mechanistic studies found that this reaction was catalyzed by the synergy between NCSWCs and TBHP. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations further suggested that the hydroperoxyl radicals from TBHP adsorbed on the carbon atoms adjacent to the graphitic N atoms are the active sites.

Abstract
Furancarboxylic acids are promising biobased building blocks in pharmaceutical and polymer industries. In this work, dual-enzyme cascade systems composed of galactose oxidase (GOase) and alcohol dehydrogenases (ADHs) are constructed for controlled synthesis of 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA) and 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), based on the catalytic promiscuity of ADHs. The byproduct H2 O2 , which is produced in GOase-catalyzed oxidation of HMF to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF), is used for horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-mediated regeneration of the oxidized nicotinamide cofactors for subsequent oxidation of DFF promoted by an ADH, thus implementing H2 O2 internal recycling. The desired products FFCA and FDCA are obtained with yields of more than 95 %.

Abstract
5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) can be considered a prominent building block: because of the presence of the alcohol and aldehyde moieties, it can be used to generate useful molecules as chemicals of industrial interest with high added value, monomers for polymers, and even fuels. This article shows how building up mixed oxides of different complexities and properties may drive the selectivity toward one of the possible products generated from 5-HMF. In particular, mixed oxides based on cerium and other metals abundant on the earth-crust perform the selective oxidation of 5-HMF to 2,5-diformylfuran (94%), using oxygen as oxidant and water as solvent. The roles of the reaction conditions (temperature, reaction time, oxygen pressure, concentration of the substrate), the chemical composition, the acidic/basic properties, and redox properties of the catalysts are discussed.

Abstract
The sustainable chemical industry encompasses a shift from the use of fossil carbon to renewable carbon. The synthesis of chemicals from nonedible biomass (cellulosic or oil) represents one of the key steps for "greening" the chemical industry. In this paper, we report the aerobic oxidative cleavage of C6 polyols (5-HMF, glucose, fructose and sucrose) to oxalic acid (OA) and succinic acid (SA) in water under mild conditions using M@CNT and M@NCNT (M=Fe, V; CNT=carbon nanotubes; NCNT=N-doped CNT), which, under suitable conditions, were recoverable and reusable without any loss of efficiency. The influence of the temperature, O2 pressure (PO2 ), reaction time and stirring rate are discussed and the best reaction conditions are determined for an almost complete conversion of the starting material and a good OA yield of 48 %. SA and formic acid were the only co-products. The former could be further converted into OA by oxidation in the presence of formic acid, resulting in an overall OA yield of >62 %. This process was clean and did not produce organic waste nor gas emissions.

Abstract
Zeolite L was synthesized by the hydrothermal method and post-treated by NH4 exchange to adjust its acidity. The samples were systematic characterized by various techniques including XRD, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, N2 adsorption-desorption, scanning electron microscopy, pyridine IR spectroscopy, and NH3 temperature-programmed desorption. The results demonstrated that the NH4 -exchange post-treatment increased the surface area, micropore volume, and acidity of zeolite L. The catalytic performance of the samples was tested in the dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in ionic liquid (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide, [bmim]Br). 99.1 % yield of HMF was obtained when the KL-80 °C-1 h sample (KL zeolite treated with 1 m NH4 NO3 solution at 80 °C for 1 h) was used. The high efficiency could be attributed to the appropriate acid properties of the catalyst. The zeolite catalyst could be reused four times without significant decrease in activity.
