Simultaneous AuIII Extraction and In Situ Formation of Polymeric Membrane-Supported Au Nanoparticles: A Sustainable Process with Application in Catalysis

Metallic Nanoparticles Adsorbed at the Pore Surface of Polymers with Various Porous Morphologies: Toward Hybrid Materials Meant for Heterogeneous Supported Catalysis

Hybrid materials consisting of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) adsorbed on porous polymeric supports have been the subject of intense research for many years. Such materials indeed gain from intrinsic properties, e.g., high specific surface area, catalytic properties, porous features, etc., of both components. Rational design of such materials is fundamental regarding the functionalization of the support surface and thus the interactions required for the metallic NPs to be strongly immobilized at the pore surface. Herein are presented some significant scientific contributions to this rapidly expanding research field. This contribution will notably focus on various examples of such hybrid systems prepared from porous polymers, whatever the morphology and size of the pores. Such porous polymeric supports can display pores with sizes ranging from a few nanometers to hundreds of microns while pore morphologies, such as spherical, tubular, etc., and/or open or closed, can be obtained. These systems have allowed some catalytic molecular reactions to be successfully undertaken, such as the reduction of nitroaromatic compounds or dyes, e.g., methylene blue and Eosin Y, boronic acid-based C–C homocoupling reactions, but also cascade reactions consisting of two catalytic reactions achieved in a row.

Hybrids based on borate-functionalized cellulose nanofibers and noble-metal nanoparticles as sustainable catalysts for environmental applications

Polymeric supports from renewable resources such as cellulose nanomaterials are having a direct impact on the development of heterogenous sustainable catalysts. Recently, to increase the potentiality of these materials, research has been oriented towards novel functionalization possibilities. In this study, to increase the stability of cellulose nanofiber films as catalytic supports, by limiting the solubility in water, we report the synthesis of new hybrid catalysts (HC) based on silver, gold, and platinum nanoparticles, and the corresponding bimetallic nanoparticles, supported on cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) cross-linked with borate ions. The catalysts were prepared from metal precursors reduced by the CNFs in an aqueous suspension. Metal nanoparticles supported on CNFs with a spherical shape and a mean size of 9 nm were confirmed by TEM, XRD, and SAXS. Functionalized films of HC-CNFs were obtained by adding a borate solution as a cross-linking agent. Solid-state ¹¹B NMR of films with different cross-linking degrees evidenced the presence of four different boron species of which the bis-chelate is responsible for the cross-linking of the CNFs. Also, it may be concluded that the bis-chelate and the mono-chelates modify the microstructure of the film increasing the water uptake and enhancing the catalytic activity in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol.

We report the synthesis of supported noble metal nanoparticles on cellulose nanofibers cross-linked with borate as highly efficient sustainable catalysts.

Polydimethylsiloxane Sponge-Supported Nanometer Gold: Highly Efficient Recyclable Catalyst for Cross-Dehydrogenative Coupling in Water

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS, a stable hydrophobic polymer material) sponge-supported nanometer-sized gold can be used as a highly efficient recyclable catalyst for cross-dehydrogenative coupling of tertiary amines with various nucleophiles in water. This PDMS sponge nanometer gold catalyst can provide much better activity than the free nanometer gold in water. The reaction can be scaled up by using an easy-to-build continuous flow reactor. These results indicate the potential application of porous hydrophobic PDMS sponge material as a promising support for highly efficient recyclable catalysts in water.
