Solar Water Splitting Utilizing a SiC Photocathode, a BiVO4 Photoanode, and a Perovskite Solar Cell

Perovskite-Solar-Cell-Powered Integrated Fuel Conversion and Energy-Storage Devices

Metal halide hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have received considerable attention over the past decade owing to their potential for low-cost, solution-processable, earth-abundant, and high-performance superiority, increasing power conversion efficiencies of up to 25.7%. Solar energy conversion into electricity is highly efficient and sustainable, but direct utilization, storage, and poor energy diversity are difficult to achieve, resulting in a potential waste of resources. Considering its convenience and feasibility, converting solar energy into chemical fuels is regarded as a promising pathway for boosting energy diversity and expanding its utilization. In addition, the energy conversion-storage integrated system can efficiently sequentially capture, convert, and store energy in electrochemical energy storage devices. However, a comprehensive overview focusing on PSC-self-driven integrated devices with a discussion of their development and limitations remains lacking. Here, focus is on the development of representative configurations of emerging PSC-based photo-electrochemical devices including self-charging power packs, unassisted solar water splitting/CO2 reduction. The advanced progresses in this field, including configuration design, key parameters, working principles, integration strategies, electrode materials, and their performance evaluations are also summarized. Finally, scientific challenges and future perspectives for ongoing research in this field are presented.

Tandem cells for unbiased photoelectrochemical water splitting

Hydrogen is an essential energy carrier which will address the challenges posed by the energy crisis and climate change. Photoelectrochemical water splitting (PEC) is an important method for producing solar-powered hydrogen. The PEC tandem configuration harnesses sunlight as the exclusive energy source to drive both the hydrogen (HER) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER), simultaneously. Therefore, PEC tandem cells have been developed and gained tremendous interest in recent decades. This review describes the current status of the development of tandem cells for unbiased photoelectrochemical water splitting. The basic principles and prerequisites for constructing PEC tandem cells are introduced first. We then review various single photoelectrodes for use in water reduction or oxidation, and highlight the current state-of-the-art discoveries. Second, a close look into recent developments of PEC tandem cells in water splitting is provided. Finally, a perspective on the key challenges and prospects for the development of tandem cells for unbiased PEC water splitting are given.

Solar-to-Chemical Fuel Conversion via Metal Halide Perovskite Solar-Driven Electrocatalysis

Sunlight is an abundant and clean energy source, the harvesting of which could make a significant contribution to society's increasing energy demands. Metal halide perovskites (MHP) have recently received attention for solar fuel generation through photocatalysis and solar-driven electrocatalysis. However, MHP photocatalysis is limited by low solar energy conversion efficiency, poor stability, and impractical reaction conditions. Compared to photocatalysis, MHP solar-driven electrocatalysis not only exhibits higher solar conversion efficiency but also is more stable when operating under practical reaction conditions. In this Perspective, we outline three leading types of MHP solar-driven electrocatalysis device technologies now in the research spotlight, namely, (1) photovoltaic-electrochemical (PV-EC), (2) photovoltaic-photoelectrochemical (PV-PEC), and (3) photoelectrochemical (PEC) approaches for solar-to-fuel reactions, including water-splitting and the CO₂ reduction reaction. In addition, we compare each technology to show their relative technical advantages and limitations and highlight promising research directions for the rapidly emerging scientific field of MHP-based solar-driven electrocatalysis.

Multilayered Hematite Nanowires with Thin-Film Silicon Photovoltaics in an All-Earth-Abundant Hybrid Tandem Device for Solar Water Splitting

The concept of hybrid tandem device structures that combine metal oxides with thin-film semiconducting photoabsorbers holds great promise for large-scale, robust, and cost-effective bias-free photoelectrochemical water splitting (PEC-WS). This work highlights important steps toward the efficient coupling of high-performance hematite photoanodes with multijunction thin-film silicon photocathodes providing high bias-free photocurrent density. The hybrid PEC-WS device is optimized by testing three types of multijunction silicon photocathodes with the hematite photoanode: amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) tandem: a-Si:H/a-Si:H and triple junction with microcrystalline silicon (μc-Si:H): a-Si:H/a-Si:H/μc-Si:H and a-Si:H/μc-Si:H/μc-Si:H. The results provide evidence that the multijunction structures offer high flexibility for hybrid tandem devices with regard to tunable photovoltages and spectral matching. Furthermore, both photoanode and photocathode are tested under various electrolyte and light concentration conditions, respectively, with respect to their photoelectrochemical performance and stability. A 27 % enhancement in the solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency is observed upon concentrating light from 100 to 300 mW cm^-2 . Ultimately, bias-free water splitting is demonstrated, with a photocurrent density of 4.6 mA cm^-2 (under concentrated illumination) paired with excellent operation stability for more than 24 h of the all-earth-abundant and low-cost hematite/silicon tandem PEC-WS device.

Effective Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution by Cascadal Carrier Transfer in the Reverse Direction

Visible-light-responsive photocatalysts used in the highly efficient hydrogen production exhibit several disadvantages such as photocorrosion and fast recombination. Because of the potential important applications of such catalysts, it is crucial that a simple, effective solution is developed. In this respect, in this study, we combined SiC (β modification) and TiO₂ with CdS to overcome the challenges of photocorrosion and fast recombination of CdS. Notably, we found that when irradiated with visible light, CdS was excited, and the excited electrons moved to the conduction band of TiO₂, thereby increasing the efficiency of charge separation. In addition, by moving the holes generated on CdS to the valence band of SiC, in the opposite direction of TiO₂, photocorrosion and fast recombination were prevented. As a result, in the sulfide solution, the CdS/SiC composite catalyst exhibited 4.3 times higher hydrogen generation ability than pure CdS. Moreover, this effect was enhanced with the addition of TiO₂, giving 10.8 times higher hydrogen generation ability for the CdS/SiC/TiO₂ catalyst. Notably, the most efficient catalyst, which was obtained by depositing Pt as a cocatalyst, exhibited 1.09 mmol g^-1 h^-1 hydrogen generation ability and an apparent quantum yield of 24.8%. Because water reduction proceeded on the TiO₂ surface and oxidative sulfide decomposition proceeded on the SiC surface, the exposure of CdS to the solution was unnecessary, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed that photocorrosion was successfully suppressed. Thus, we believe that the effective composite photocatalyst construction method presented herein can also be applied to other visible-light-responsive powder photocatalysts having the same disadvantages as CdS, thereby improving the efficiency of such catalysts.

Perovskite Photovoltaic Integrated CdS/TiO2 Photoanode for Unbiased Photoelectrochemical Hydrogen Generation

Photoelectrolysis of water using solar energy into storable and environment-friendly chemical fuel in the form of hydrogen provides a potential solution to address the environmental concerns and fulfill future energy requirements in a sustainable manner. Achieving efficient and spontaneous hydrogen evolution in water using solar light as the only energy input is a highly desirable but a difficult target. In this work, we report perovskite solar cell integrated CdS-based photoanode for unbiased photoelectrochemical hydrogen evolution. An integrated tandem device consisting of mesoporous CdS/TiO₂ photoanode paired with a triple-cation perovskite (Cs_0.05(MA_0.17FA_0.83)_0.95Pb(I_0.83Br_0.17)₃) solar cell is developed via a facile fabrication route. The proposed photovoltaic integrated photoanode presents an efficient tandem configuration with high optical transparency to long-wavelength photons and strong photoelectrochemical conversions from short-wavelength photons. On the basis of this integrated tandem device, an unbiased photocurrent density of 7.8 mA/cm² is demonstrated under AM1.5G illumination.
