Abstract
In this study, we present an innovative approach for creating hierarchical meso/nanoporous Pt films using dynamic soft templating. The fabrication process, called dynamic soft templating, involves Pt electrodeposition within a specialized bicontinuous microemulsion (BME) system characterized by a sophisticated three-dimensional network comprising water and oil phases, surfactants, and cosurfactants. Pt electrodeposition exclusively occurs in the water phase of the BME. This results in a porous Pt film exhibiting a nanostructure mirroring the oil solution/water solution nanostructure (solution/solution structure) of the BME, the size of which can be tailored by adjusting the BME composition. Through a simultaneous interplay of Pt electrodeposition and overpotential deposition of hydrogen (H-OPD, dissociative adsorption of water), potential-dependent Pt mesostructures are dynamically shaped. As a result, we achieve diverse morphologies in the form of hierarchical meso/nanoporous Pt films. The potential applications of the films are evaluated as electrocatalysts for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), and it was found that the electrocatalytic performances seem to be sensitive to nanoporosity and not relevant to mesoporosity.

Abstract
Hydrogen is a valuable clean energy source, and electrolysis to produce hydrogen from water is a crucial component. However, a major problem of hydrogen generation by electrolysis is its large overpotential and poor economics. To reduce the overpotential, we mainly use nickel foam and Co-Mo ions as feedstock and create an efficient catalytic material by electrodeposition. The Co-Mo interaction improves the current efficiency. In 1 mol/L NaOH solution, the overpotential of the Co-Mo-NF composites was low when the current density is -10 mA/cm2, with the best value reaching 45.3 mV, which is less than those of Co-NF (94.4 mV) and Mo-NF (88.2 mV). All deposits had similar Tafel slopes in the 77.9 mV/decade range. The catalyst does not just have a favorable effect on hydrogen formation but also has a surprisingly high double-layer capacitance (up to 180 mF/cm2) and good stability. This research provides an impactful approach for developing a non-precious metal HER catalyst for industrial hydrogen production.

Abstract
The development of electrocatalysts for energy conversion systems is essential for alleviating environmental problems and producing useful energy sources as alternatives to fossil fuels. Improving the catalytic performance and stability of electrocatalysts is a major challenge in the development of energy conversion systems. Moreover, understanding their electrode structure is important for enhancing the energy efficiency. Recently, binder-free self-supported electrodes have been investigated because the seamless contact between the electrocatalyst and substrate minimizes the contact resistance as well as facilitates fast charge transfer at the catalyst/substrate interface and high catalyst utilization. Electrodeposition is an effective and facile method for fabricating self-supported electrodes in aqueous solutions under mild conditions. Facile fabrication without a polymer binder and controlability of the compositional and morphological properties of the electrocatalyst make electrodeposition methods suitable for enhancing the performance of energy conversion systems. Herein, we summarize recent research on self-supported electrodes fabricated by electrodeposition for energy conversion reactions, particularly focusing on cathodic reactions of electrolyzer system such as hydrogen evolution, electrochemical CO2 reduction, and electrochemical N2 reduction reactions. The deposition conditions, morphological and compositional properties, and catalytic performance of the electrocatalyst are reviewed. Finally, the prospective directions of electrocatalyst development for energy conversion systems are discussed.

Abstract
The development of feasible micro/nanoplatforms for various biomedical applications requires holistic research that explores scalable synthesis and design pathways and imposes an interdisciplinary integration of materials science, physical, medical, chemical, and biological knowledge. Thanks to their unique characteristics (i.e., structure, large specific surface areas, tuneability, versatility, and integrity), mesoporous materials have emerged as potential candidates for being part of micro/nanoplatforms for therapeutic, monitoring, and diagnostic applications. In this context, Fe-Pt mesoporous materials are excellent candidates to be part of biomedical micro/nanoplatforms, thanks to their chemical nature, structure, and magnetic properties, which endow them with magnetic locomotion, high cargo capability of therapeutic agents inside the mesoporous cavity, and large surface area for surface functionalization. However, the chemical stability in biological media and cytotoxicity of the Fe-Pt mesoporous material (without considering the effects of architecture and shape) are pivotal elements that determine the suitability of these materials for biomedical applications. This work demonstrates the following: (i) the potential of electrochemical deposition, based on the use of block copolymer micellar solutions as electrochemical media, as an easy, inexpensive, and scalable strategy to synthesize mesoporous Fe-Pt components with tunable chemical composition, porosity, magnetism, and shape (in this case films, but other architectures like nanowires can be easily fabricated using simultaneously hard templates); (ii) the excellent corrosion stability, which is comparable to bulk Au, and minimal chemical dissolution in biological media after 160 h of immersion (∼0.88% of Fe and ∼0.0019% of Pt), which confirms the robustness of Fe-Pt; and (iii) negligible cytotoxicity on HaCaT cells (human immortalized keratinocytes), which reinforces the biocompatibility of Fe-Pt mesoporous structures. Also, the presence of Fe-Pt mesoporous films seems to induce a slight increase in cell viability. These results confirm the biocompatibility of Fe-Pt mesoporous films, making them suitable for biomedical applications.

Abstract
The low mass activity and high price of pure platinum (Pt)-based catalysts predominantly limit their large-scale utilization in electrocatalysis. Therefore, the reduction of Pt amount while preserving the electrocatalytic efficiency represents a viable alternative. In this work, we prepared new PtRu2 nanoparticles supported on sulphur and nitrogen co-doped crumbled graphene with trace amounts of iron (PtRu2/PF) electrocatalysts. The PtRu2/PF catalysts exhibited enhanced electrocatalytic performance and stability for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at pH = 0. Moreover, the prepared PtRu2/PF electrocatalyst displayed higher HER activity than commercial 20% Pt/C. The PtRu2/PF catalyst achieved a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at an overpotential value of only 22 mV for HER, performing better activity than many other Pt-based electrocatalysts. Besides, the PtRu2/PF revealed a good performance for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media. The PtRu2/PF catalyst recorded a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at an overpotential of only 270 mV for OER in KOH (1.0 M) solution and an onset potential of 0.96 V vs. RHE (at 1 mA cm-2) for ORR in KOH (0.1 M) solution.

Abstract
In pursuit of friendlier conditions for the preparation of high-value biochemicals, we developed catalytic synthesis of γ-valerolactone by levulinic acid hydrogenation with formic acid as the hydrogen source. Both levulinic and formic acid are intermediate products in the biomass transformation processes. The objective of the work is twofold: the development of a novel approach for milder synthesis conditions to produce γ-valerolactone and the reduction of the economic cost of the catalyst. Ni-rich Ni-Pt mesoporous nanowires were synthesized in an aqueous medium using a combined hard-soft-template-assisted electrodeposition method, in which porous polycarbonate membranes controlled the shape and the Pluronic P-123 copolymer served as the porogen agent. The electrodeposition conditions selected favored nickel deposition and generated nanowires with nickel percentages above 75 atom %. The increase in deposition potential favored nickel deposition. However, it was detrimental for the porous diameter because the mesoporous structure is promoted by the presence of the platinum-rich micelles near the substrate, which is not favored at more negative potentials. The prepared catalysts promoted the complete transformation to γ-valerolactone in a yield of around 99% and proceeded with the absence of byproducts. The coupling temperature and reaction time were optimized considering the energy cost. The threshold operational temperature was established at 140 °C, at which, 120 min was sufficient for attaining the complete transformation. Working temperatures below 140 °C rendered the reaction completion difficult. The Ni78Pt22 nanowires exhibited excellent reusability, with minimal nickel leaching into the reaction mixture, whereas those with higher nickel contents showed corrosion.

Abstract
Effective manipulation of the magnetic properties of nanostructured metallic alloys, exhibiting intergrain porosity (i.e., channels) and conformally coated with insulating oxide nanolayers, with an electric field is demonstrated. Nanostructured Co-Pt films are grown by electrodeposition (ED) and subsequently coated with either AlOx or HfOx by atomic layer deposition (ALD) to promote magneto-ionic effects (i.e., voltage-driven ion migration) during electrolyte gating. Pronounced variations in coercivity (HC) and magnetic moment at saturation (mS) are found at room temperature after biasing the heterostructures. The application of a negative voltage results in a decrease of HC and an increase of mS, whereas the opposite trend is achieved for positive voltages. Although magneto-ionic phenomena are already observed in uncoated Co-Pt films (because of the inherent presence of oxygen), the ALD oxide nanocoatings serve to drastically enhance the magneto-ionic effects because of partially reversible oxygen migration, driven by voltage, across the interface between AlOx or HfOx and the nanostructured Co-Pt film. Co-Pt/HfOx heterostructures exhibit the most significant magneto-electric response at negative voltages, with an increase of mS up to 76% and a decrease of HC by 58%. The combination of a nanostructured magnetic alloy and a skinlike insulating oxide nanocoating is shown to be appealing to enhance magneto-ionic effects, potentially enabling electrolyte-gated magneto-ionic technology.

Abstract
Pt-based nanomaterials have been widely investigated as efficient electrocatalysts for energy conversion reactions such as small organic molecule oxidation and hydrogen evolution, but are mainly limited to alloys of Pt with transition metals. Herein, a new PtGa electrocatalyst with unique nanoporous architecture and a self-supported feature (np-PtGa) was fabricated via a liquid Ga-assisted dealloying strategy. Owing to the unique nanoporous structure and alloying effect by the introduction of Ga, the np-PtGa alloy exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activities towards the electrooxidation of methanol, ethanol, ethylene glycol, glycerol, and formic acid, which are three orders of magnitude higher than those of the benchmark Pt foil. Moreover, our np-PtGa alloy displays extraordinary catalytic activities towards the hydrogen evolution reaction in both acidic and alkaline environments. Impressively, the overpotential of np-PtGa is as low as 50 mV at 10 mA cm-2 with a Tafel slope of 55 mV dec-1 in 1 M KOH, outperforming most of the recently reported electrocatalysts. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the downshift of the d-band center caused by the Ga 4p/Pt 5d orbital hybridization and compressive stress could weaken the adsorption of intermediate species and well rationalize the enhanced electrocatalytic performance of np-PtGa.

Abstract
Electrochemical technology has been proposed as an alternative or complementary method to classical inorganic synthesis for the fabrication of effective metallic solid catalysts. Microemulsion-based electrodeposition is a novel, fast, and one-step procedure to obtain mesoporous catalysts with extraordinarily effective areas, which can be used in heterogeneous catalysis for degradation of pollutants and clean energy production. The fabrication process involves conducting microemulsions containing ionic species (dissolved in aqueous solutions) as precursors of the metallic catalysts. The presence of nanometric droplets of organic or ionic-liquid components in the microemulsion defines the mesoporosity of the catalysts during a one-step electrodeposition process. This method also allows the fabrication of metal catalysts as supported mesoporous films or mesoporous nanowires with very high effective areas. Additionally, reactants have excellent accessibility to the overall surface of the catalysts. The different catalysts fabricated with the help of this technology have been tested for competitive degradation of organic pollutants and anodes' materials for fuel cell devices.

Abstract
Mesoporous Ni and Cu-Ni (Cu20Ni80 and Cu45Ni55 in at. %) films, showing a three-dimensional (3D) porous structure and tunable magnetic properties, are prepared by electrodeposition from aqueous surfactant solutions using micelles of P-123 triblock copolymer as structure-directing entities. Pores between 5 and 30 nm and dissimilar space arrangements (continuous interconnected networks, circular pores, corrugated mesophases) are obtained depending on the synthetic conditions. X-ray diffraction studies reveal that the Cu-Ni films have crystallized in the face-centered cubic structure, are textured, and exhibit certain degree of phase separation, particularly those with a higher Cu content. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is used to conformally coat the mesopores of Cu20Ni80 film with amorphous Al2O3, rendering multiphase "nano-in-meso" metal-ceramic composites without compromising the ferromagnetic response of the metallic scaffold. From a technological viewpoint, these 3D nanoengineered composite films could be appealing for applications like magnetically actuated micro/nanoelectromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS), voltage-driven magneto-electric devices, capacitors, or as protective coatings with superior strength and tribological performance.
