Directly Photoexcited Oxides for Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

An integrated n-Si/BiVO4 photoelectrode with an interfacial bi-layer for unassisted solar water splitting

Integrated n-Si/BiVO4 is one of the most promising candidates for unbiased photoelectrochemical water splitting. However, a direct connection between n-Si and BiVO4 will not attain overall water splitting due to the small band offset as well as the interfacial defects at the n-Si/BiVO4 interface that severely impede carrier separation and transport, limiting the photovoltage generation. This paper describes the design and fabrication of an integrated n-Si/BiVO4 device with enhanced photovoltage extracted from the interfacial bi-layer for unassisted water splitting. An Al2O3/indium tin oxide (ITO) interfacial bi-layer was inserted at the n-Si/BiVO4 interface, which promotes the interfacial carrier transport by enlarging the band offset while healing interfacial defects. When coupled to a separate cathode for hydrogen evolution, spontaneous water splitting could be realized with this n-Si/Al2O3/ITO/BiVO4 tandem anode, with an average solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency of 0.62% for over 1000 hours.

Generalized Synthesis to Produce Transparent Thin Films of Ternary Metal Oxide Photoelectrodes

Developing facile approaches to prepare non-light-scattering ternary oxide thin film photoelectrodes is an important goal for solar water splitting tandem cells. Herein, a novel synthesis route is reported that employs ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to enable compatible water solubility of diverse metal cations, which affords transparent films by solution processing. By using BiVO₄ as a model material, a remarkable improvement in transparency is demonstrated, quantified by the direct transmittance at 600 nm of >80 % versus the <10 % observed with state-of-the-art electrodeposited thin films while maintaining reasonable solar-driven oxidation photocurrents (1.75 mA cm^-2 in the presence of a sulfite hole scavenger). Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the synthesis technique can be applied in a general fashion towards the synthesis of diverse n- and p-type metal oxide materials, such as ZnFe₂ O₄ and CuFeO₂ .

Photoelectrocatalytic Hydrogen Production Using a TiO2/WO3 Bilayer Photocatalyst in the Presence of Ethanol as a Fuel

Photoelectrocatalytic hydrogen production was studied by using a photoelectrochemical cell where the photoanode was made by depositing on FTO electrodes either a nanoparticulate WO3 film alone or a bilayer film made of nanoparticulate WO3 at the bottom covered with a nanoparticulate TiO2 film on the top. Both the electric current and the hydrogen produced by the photoelectrocatalysis cell substantially increased by adding the top titania layer. The presence of this layer did not affect the current-voltage characteristics of the cell (besides the increase of the current density). This was an indication that the flow of electrons in the combined semiconductor photoanode was through the WO3 layer. The increase of the current was mainly attributed to the passivation of the surface recombination sites on WO3 contributing to the limitation of charge recombination mechanisms. In addition, the top titania layer may have contributed to photon absorption by back scattering of light and thus by enhancement of light absorption by WO3. Relatively high charge densities were recorded, owing both to the improvement of the photoanode by the combined photocatalyst and to the presence of ethanol as the sacrificial agent (fuel), which affected the recorded current by “current doubling” phenomena. Hydrogen was produced under electric bias using a simple cathode electrode made of carbon paper carrying carbon black as the electrocatalyst. This electrode gave a Faradaic efficiency of 58% for hydrogen production.
