Metal-Free Photochemical Degradation of Lignin-Derived Aryl Ethers and Lignin by Autologous Radicals through Ionic Liquid Induction

The ionic liquids upon perchlorate to promote the C-C/C-O bonds cleavage in alkali lignin under photothermal synergism

Transforming lignin into aromatic monomers is critically attractive to develop green and sustainable energy supplies. However, the usage of the additional catalysts like metal or base/acid is commonly limited by the caused repolymerized and environmental issues. The key step is to mediate electron transfer in lignin to trigger lignin C-C/C-O bonds cleavage without the catalysts mentioned above. Here, we report that the ionic liquids [BMim][ClO4] was found to trigger lignin electron transfer to cleave the C-C/C-O bonds for aromatic monomers without any additional catalyst. The proton transfer from [BMim]+ to [ClO4]- could polarize the anion and decrease its structure stability, upon which the active hydroxyl radical generated and induced lignin C-C/C-O bonds fragmentation via free radical-mediated routes with the assistance of photothermal synergism. About 4.4 wt% yields of aromatic monomers, mainly composed of vanillin and acetosyringone, are afforded in [BMim][ClO4] under UV-light irradiation in the air at 80 °C. This work opens the way to produce value-added aromatic monomers from lignin using an eco-friendly, energy-efficient, and simple route that may contribute to the sustainable utilization of renewable natural resources.

Photoreforming for Lignin Upgrading: A Critical Review

Photoreforming of lignocellulosic biomass to simultaneously produce gas fuels and value-added chemicals has gradually emerged as a promising strategy to alleviate the fossil fuels crisis. Compared to cellulose and hemicellulose, the exploitation and utilization of lignin via photoreforming are still at the early and more exciting stages. This Review systematically summarizes the latest progress on the photoreforming of lignin-derived model components and "real" lignin, aiming to provide insights for lignin photocatalytic valorization from fundamental to industrial applications. Considering the complexity of lignin physicochemical properties, related analytic methods are also introduced to characterize lignin photocatalytic conversion and product distribution. We finally put forward the challenges and perspective of lignin photoreforming, hoping to provide some guidance to valorize biomass into value-added chemicals and fuels via a mild photoreforming process in the future.

Enhanced oxidative depolymerization of lignin in cooperative imidazolium-based ionic liquid binary mixtures

The aerobic oxidation of lignin model 2-phenoxyacetophenone (2-PAP) in cooperative ionic liquid mixtures (CoILs) with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([C₂C₁im]OAc) and 1-benzyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([B_ZC₁im]NTf₂) was investigated. Complete degradation of 2-PAP was achieved with [C₂C₁im]OAc/[B_ZC₁im]NTf₂ molar ratio (R_IL) of 1/1 and 1/2 at 100 °C for 2 h. The conversion and product yields from CoILs were higher than those in pure ILs, indicating the cooperative effects of [C₂C₁im]OAc/[B_ZC₁im]NTf₂ on cleaving aryl-ether bonds. [C₂C₁im]OAc promoted the catalytic cleavage of aryl-ether bonds and solvation, and [B_ZC₁im]NTf₂ induced the formation of alkyl radicals and enhanced the product selectivity. Accordingly, the highest conversion of alkali lignin (79.8%) was obtained with R_IL of 5/1 at 100 °C for 2 h, and phenol monomers (306 mg/g) were selectively produced. The CoILs exhibited good catalytic capacities for oxidative depolymerization of lignin, which strongly depends on the changes in intermolecular interactions and structural organization with varying R_IL.

Radical generation and fate control for photocatalytic biomass conversion

Photocatalysis is an emerging approach for sustainable chemical production from renewable biomass under mild conditions. Active radicals are always generated as key intermediates, in which their high reactivity renders them versatile for various upgrading processes. However, controlling their reaction is a challenge, especially in highly functionalized biomass frameworks. In this Review, we summarize recent advanced photocatalytic systems for selective biomass valorization, with an emphasis on their distinct radical-mediated reaction patterns. The strategies for generating a specific radical intermediate and controlling its subsequent conversion towards desired chemicals are also highlighted, aiming to provide guidance for future studies. We believe that taking full advantage of the unique reactivity of radical intermediates would provide great opportunities to develop more efficient photocatalytic systems for biomass valorization.

Recent advances in the valorization of plant biomass

Plant biomass is a highly abundant renewable resource that can be converted into several types of high-value-added products, including chemicals, biofuels and advanced materials. In the last few decades, an increasing number of biomass species and processing techniques have been developed to enhance the application of plant biomass followed by the industrial application of some of the products, during which varied technologies have been successfully developed. In this review, we summarize the different sources of plant biomass, the evolving technologies for treating it, and the various products derived from plant biomass. Moreover, the challenges inherent in the valorization of plant biomass used in high-value-added products are also discussed. Overall, with the increased use of plant biomass, the development of treatment technologies, and the solution of the challenges raised during plant biomass valorization, the value-added products derived from plant biomass will become greater in number and more valuable.

Weak Bonds Joint Effects Catalyze the Cleavage of Strong C-C Bond of Lignin-Inspired Compounds and Lignin in Air by Ionic Liquids

Oxidation of lignin to value-added aromatics through selective C-C bond cleavage via metal-free and mild strategies is promising but challenging. It was discovered that the cations of ionic liquids (ILs) could effectively catalyze this kind of strong bond cleavage by forming multiple weak hydrogen bonds, enabling the reaction conducted in air at temperature lower than 373 K without metal-containing catalysts. The cation [CPMim]⁺ (1-propylronitrile-3-methylimidazolium) afforded the highest efficiency in C-C bond cleavage, in which high yields (>90 %) of oxidative products were achieved. [CPMim]⁺ could form three ipsilateral hydrogen bonds with the oxygen atom of C=O and ether bonds at both sides of the C-C bond. The weak bonds joint effects could promote adjacent C-H bond cleave to form free radicals and thereby catalyze the fragmentation of the strong C-C. This work opens up an eco-friendly and energy-efficient route for direct valorization of lignin by enhancing IL properties via tuning the cation.

Photocatalytic Conversion of Lignin into Chemicals and Fuels

Lignin, an underutilized component of lignocellulosic biomass, is regarded as a rich reservoir for the production of aromatic chemicals and fuels. Despite extensive research in recent years, lignin's potential is far from being fully unlocked. Photocatalysis that uses sustainable solar energy to drive lignin conversion under mild conditions has been identified as a promising strategy and received growing research interest. This review aims to present a critical introduction to the photocatalytic conversion of lignin, including a summary of lignin conversion pathways and mechanisms, as well as the latest cutting-edge innovations on photocatalyst design and reactor construction. Moreover, the screening of solvents and regulation of other key factors that are involved in photocatalytic lignin conversion are also elucidated and future perspectives and challenges for photocatalytic conversion of lignin into valuable products are discussed.

Highly Efficient Cleavage of Ether Bonds in Lignin Models by Transfer Hydrogenolysis over Dual-Functional Ruthenium/Montmorillonite

Cleavage of ether bonds is a crucial but challenging step for lignin valorization. To efficiently realize this transformation, the development of robust catalysts or catalytic systems is required. In this study, montmorillonite (MMT)-supported Ru (denoted as Ru/MMT) is fabricated as a dual-functional heterogeneous catalyst to cleave various types of ether bonds through transfer hydrogenolysis without using any additional acids or bases. The prepared Ru/MMT material is found to efficiently catalyze the cleavage of various lignin models and lignin-derived phenols; cyclohexanes (fuels) and cyclohexanols (key intermediates) are the main products. The synergistic effect between electron-enriched Ru and the acidic sites on MMT contributes to the excellent performance of Ru/MMT. Systematic studies reveal that the reaction proceeds through two possible reaction pathways, including the direct cleavage of ether bonds and the formation of intermediates with one hydrogenated benzene ring, for all examined types of ether bonds, namely, 4-O-5, α-O-4, and β-O-4.

Photocatalytic Cleavage of β-O-4 Ether Bonds in Lignin over Ni/TiO2

It is of great importance to explore the selective hydrogenolysis of β-O-4 linkages, which account for 45–60% of all linkages in native lignin, to produce valued-added chemicals and fuels from biomass employing UV light as catalyst. TiO₂ exhibited satisfactory catalytic performances in various photochemical reactions, due to its versatile advantages involving high catalytic activity, low cost and non-toxicity. In this work, 20 wt.% Ni/TiO₂ and oxidant PCC (Pyridinium chlorochromate) were employed to promote the cleavage of β-O-4 alcohol to obtain high value chemicals under UV irradiation at room temperature. The Ni/TiO₂ photocatalyst can be magnetically recovered and efficiently reused in the following four consecutive recycling tests in the cleavage of β-O-4 ether bond in lignin. Mechanism studies suggested that the oxidation of β-O-4 alcohol to β-O-4 ketone by oxidant PCC first occurred during the reaction, and was followed by the photocatalysis of the obtained β-O-4 ketone to corresponding acetophenone and phenol derivates. Furthermore, the system was tested on a variety of lignin model substrates containing β-O-4 linkage for the generation of fragmentation products in good to excellent results.

Photocatalytic transformations of lignocellulosic biomass into chemicals

This review highlights recent advances in photocatalytic transformations of lignocellulosic biomass (polysaccharides and lignin) into chemicals (in particular organic oxygenates).
