Orthogonal Supramolecular Assembly Triggered by Inclusion and Exclusion Interactions with Cucurbit[7]uril for Photocatalytic H2 Evolution

Dual catalytic activity of a cucurbit[7]uril-functionalized metal alloy nanocomposite for sustained hydrogen generation: hydrolysis of ammonia borane and electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction

H2 is one of the most attractive fuel alternatives to the existing fossil fuels that cause detrimental environmental issues. Thus, there has been an upsurge in the research on the production of green hydrogen. In this view, cucurbit[7]uril (CB7)-functionalized Co:Ni alloy nanocomposites with different compositions, reported here for the first time, were synthesized to synergise the catalytic activities of a nanoalloy and CB7 and screened for hydrogen generation via hydrolysis of ammonia borane (AB). The (Co85:Ni15)50:(CB7)50 nanocomposite exhibited enhanced catalytic performance for AB hydrolysis even at room temperature as compared to the nanoalloy without CB7. Efficient release of ammonia-free green H2 is ensured by the retention of NH3 by the surface functionalized CB7 macrocycles. For sustained release, a novel and cost-effective procedure was used to regenerate AB from the by-product, and the H2 release activity was verified to be on par with commercial AB. The used nanocomposite magnetically separated from the by-product solution was shown to be an efficient electrochemical catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The cucurbit[7]uril-functionalized Co:Ni nanocomposite demonstrates remarkable dual catalytic performance to generate clean hydrogen from both the hydrolysis of AB at room temperature and the electrochemical HER, thus opening new avenues in supramolecular chemistry for developing noble metal-free catalysts with high activity and long-term stability.

Assembly and Applications of Macrocyclic-Confinement-Derived Supramolecular Organic Luminescent Emissions from Cucurbiturils

Cucurbit[n]urils (Q[n]s or CB[n]s), as a classical of artificial organic macrocyclic hosts, were found to have excellent advantages in the fabricating of tunable and smart organic luminescent materials in aqueous media and the solid state with high emitting efficiency under the rigid pumpkin-shaped structure-derived macrocyclic-confinement effect in recent years. This review aims to give a systematically up-to-date overview of the Q[n]-based supramolecular organic luminescent emissions from the confined spaces triggered host-guest complexes, including the assembly fashions and the mechanisms of the macrocycle-based luminescent complexes, as well as their applications. Finally, challenges and outlook are provided. Since this class of Q[n]-based supramolecular organic luminescent emissions, which have essentially derived from the cavity-dependent confinement effect and the resulting assembly fashions, emerged only a few years ago, we hope this review will provide valuable information for the further development of macrocycle-based light-emitting materials and other related research fields.

A host–guest interaction activated Bobbitt oxidant for highly efficient oxidation of alcohols

Host–guest complexation using hydrogen-bonded macrocycles was found to enable activation of the Bobbitt oxidant reagent, which greatly facilitates the highly efficient oxidation of unactivated primary alcohols.

Tuneable Control of Organocatalytic Activity through Host-Guest Chemistry

Dynamic regulation of chemical reactivity is important in many complex chemical reaction networks, such as cascade reactions and signal transduction processes. Signal responsive catalysts could play a crucial role in regulating these reaction pathways. Recently, supramolecular encapsulation was reported to regulate the activities of artificial catalysts. We present a host-guest chemistry strategy to modulate the activity of commercially available synthetic organocatalysts. The molecular container cucurbit[7]uril was successfully applied to change the activity of four different organocatalysts and one initiator, enabling up- or down-regulation of the reaction rates of four different classes of chemical reactions. In most cases CB[7] encapsulation results in catalyst inhibition, however in one case catalyst activation by binding to CB[7] was observed. The mechanism behind this unexpected behavior was explored by NMR binding studies and pKa measurements. The catalytic activity can be instantaneously switched during operation, by addition of either supramolecular host or competitive binding molecules, and the reaction rate can be predicted with a kinetic model. Overall, this signal responsive system proves a promising tool to control catalytic activity.

Electrostatic Interactions Accelerating Water Oxidation Catalysis via Intercatalyst O-O Coupling

Intercatalyst coupling has been widely applied in the functional mimics for binuclear synergy in natural metal enzymes. Herein, we introduce two facile and effective design strategies, which facilitate the coupling of two catalytic units via electrostatic interactions. The first system is based on a catalyst molecule functionalized with both a positively charged and a negatively charged group in the structure being able to pair with each other in an antiparallel manner arranged by electrostatic interactions. The other system consists of a mixture of two different of catalysts modified with either positively or negatively charged groups to generate intermolecular electrostatic interactions. Applying these designs to Ru(bda) (H₂bda = 2,2'-bipyridine-6,6'-dicarboxylic acid) water-oxidation catalysts improved the catalytic performance by more than an order of magnitude. The intermolecular electrostatic interactions in these two systems were fully identified by ¹H NMR, TEM, SAXS, and electrical conductivity experiments. Molecular dynamics simulations further verified that electrostatic interactions contribute to the formation of prereactive dimers, which were found to play a key role in dramatically improving the catalytic performance. The successful strategies demonstrated here can be used in designing other intercatalyst coupling systems for activation and formation of small molecules and organic synthesis.

Insight into functionalized-macrocycles-guided supramolecular photocatalysis

Due to the unique characteristics of macrocycles (e.g., the ease of modification, hydrophobic cavities, and specific guest recognition), they can provide a suitable environment to realize photocatalysis via noncovalent interactions with different substrates. In this minireview, we emphasized the photochemical transformation and catalytic reactivity of different guests based on the binding with various macrocyclic hosts as well as on the role of macrocyclic-hosts-assisted hybrid materials in energy transfer. To keep the clarity of this review, the macrocycles are categorized into the most commonly used supramolecular hosts, including crown ethers, cyclodextrins, cucurbiturils, calixarenes, and pillararenes. This minireview not only summarizes the role that macrocycles play in photocatalytic reactions but also clarifies the photocatalytic mechanisms. Finally, the future research efforts and new pathways to apply macrocycles and supramolecular hybrid materials in photocatalysis are also discussed.
