Si@SnS2 -Reduced Graphene Oxide Composite Anodes for High-Capacity Lithium-Ion Batteries

Fast Energy Storage of SnS2 Anode Nanoconfined in Hollow Porous Carbon Nanofibers for Lithium-Ion Batteries

The development of conversion-typed anodes with ultrafast charging and large energy storage is quite challenging due to the sluggish ions/electrons transfer kinetics in bulk materials and fracture of the active materials. Herein, the design of porous carbon nanofibers/SnS2 composite (SnS2 @N-HPCNFs) for high-rate energy storage, where the ultrathin SnS2 nanosheets are nanoconfined in N-doped carbon nanofibers with tunable void spaces, is reported. The highly interconnected carbon nanofibers in three-dimensional (3D) architecture provide a fast electron transfer pathway and alleviate the volume expansion of SnS2 , while their hierarchical porous structure facilitates rapid ion diffusion. Specifically, the anode delivers a remarkable specific capacity of 1935.50 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C and excellent rate capability up to 30 C with a specific capacity of 289.60 mAh g-1 . Meanwhile, at a high rate of 20 C, the electrode displays a high capacity retention of 84% after 3000 cycles and a long cycle life of 10 000 cycles. This work provides a deep insight into the construction of electrodes with high ionic/electronic conductivity for fast-charging energy storage devices.

Crab Shell-Derived SnS2/C and FeS2/C Carbon Composites as Anodes for High-Performance Sodium-Ion Batteries

The demand for energy storage devices has increased significantly, and the sustainable development of lithium-ion batteries is limited by scarce lithium resources. Therefore, alternative sodium-ion batteries which are rich in resource may become more competitive in the future market. In this work, we synthesized low-cost SnS₂/C and FeS₂/C anode materials of sodium-ion batteries which used waste crab shells as biomass carbon precursor. The SnS₂ nanosheet and FeS₂ nanosphere structures are deposited on the crab shell-derived carbon through simple hydrothermal reaction. Due to the coexistence of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and crab-derived biomass carbon, the anode material has excellent cycle stability and rate performance. SnS₂/C and FeS₂/C deliver capacities of 535.4 and 479 mA h g^-1 at the current density of 0.1 A g^-1, respectively. This study explored an effective and economical strategy to use biomass and TMDs to construct high-performance sodium-ion batteries.

Sea Urchin-like Si@MnO2@rGO as Anodes for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Si is a promising material for applications as a high-capacity anode material of lithium-ion batteries. However, volume expansion, poor electrical conductivity, and a short cycle life during the charging/discharging process limit the commercial use. In this paper, new ternary composites of sea urchin-like Si@MnO₂@reduced graphene oxide (rGO) prepared by a simple, low-cost chemical method are presented. These can effectively reduce the volume change of Si, extend the cycle life, and increase the lithium-ion battery capacity due to the dual protection of MnO₂ and rGO. The sea urchin-like Si@MnO₂@rGO anode shows a discharge specific capacity of 1282.72 mAh g⁻¹ under a test current of 1 A g⁻¹ after 1000 cycles and excellent chemical performance at different current densities. Moreover, the volume expansion of sea urchin-like Si@MnO₂@rGO anode material is ~50% after 150 cycles, which is much less than the volume expansion of Si (300%). This anode material is economical and environmentally friendly and this work made efforts to develop efficient methods to store clean energy and achieve carbon neutrality.

TMDs beyond MoS2 for Electrochemical Energy Storage

Atomically thin sheets of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have attracted interest as high capacity electrode materials for electrochemical energy storage devices owing to their unique properties (high surface area, high strength and modulus, faster ion diffusion, and so on), which arise from their layered morphology and diversified chemistry. Nevertheless, low electronic conductivity, poor cycling stability, large structural changes during metal-ion insertion/extraction along with high cost of manufacture are challenges that require further research in order for TMDs to find use in commercial batteries and supercapacitors. Here, a systematic review of cutting-edge research focused on TMD materials beyond the widely studied molybdenum disulfide or MoS₂ electrode is reported. Accordingly, a critical overview of the recent progress concerning synthesis methods, physicochemical and electrochemical properties is given. Trends and opportunities that may contribute to state-of-the-art research are also discussed.
