Synthesis of Dicarboxylic Acids from Aqueous Solutions of Diols with Hydrogen Evolution Catalyzed by an Iridium Complex

β-Methylation of Primary Alcohols with Methanol Catalyzed by a Metal-Ligand Bifunctional Iridium Catalyst

The development of efficient methods for the direct introduction of a methyl group into molecules is becoming increasingly important. Herein, the β-methylation of primary alcohols with methanol has been accomplished under environmentally benign conditions using [Cp*Ir(2,2'-bpyO)(H2O)] as a catalyst. It was found that functional groups in the ligand are crucially important for the activity of the iridium complex. Furthermore, the mechanistic research and application potential of our catalytic system are also presented.

Selective Conversion of Glycerol to Lactic Acid in Water via Acceptorless Dehydrogenation Catalyzed by a Water-Soluble Metal-Ligand Bifunctional Iridium Catalyst

An efficient method for the selective conversion of glycerol, the major byproduct of the biodiesel manufacturing process, to lactic acid in water via acceptorless dehydrogenation has been developed. In the presence of a water-soluble [Cp*Ir(6,6'-(OH)2-2,2'-bpy)(H2O)][OTf]2 (0.1 mol %) and KOH (1.1 equiv), the reaction proceeded at 120 °C for 24 h to afford the desired product in >99% yield with >99% selectivity. It was confirmed that OH functional groups in the ligand were crucial for the activity of the iridium complex. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations and mechanistic experiments were also undertaken.

Hydrogenation of Quinones to Hydroquinones under Atmospheric Pressure Catalyzed by a Metal-Ligand Bifunctional Iridium Catalyst

A general method for the hydrogenation of quinones to hydroquinones under atmospheric pressure has been developed. In the presence of [Cp*Ir(2,2'-bpyO)(H2O)] (0.5-1 mol %), a range of products were obtained in high yields. Furthemore, the expansion of this catalytic system to the hydrogenation of 1,4-benzoquinone diimines was also presented. Functional groups in the bpy ligand were found to be crucial for the catalytic activity of iridium complexes.

Upgrading Ethanol to n-Butanol in the Presence of Carbonate Catalyzed by a Cp*Ir Complex Bearing a Functional 2,2'-Carbonylbibenzimidazole Ligand

Upgrading ethanol to n-butanol as biofuels is an important topic for sustainable chemistry. Herein, a Cp*Ir complex bearing a functional 2,2'-carbonylbibenzimidazole ligand [Cp*Ir(2,2'-COBiBzImH2)Cl][Cl] was designed and synthesized. In the presence of a catalyst (0.1 mol %) and Cs2CO3 (6 mol %), the highest yield of updated n-butanol is up to 37% with 80% selectivity. NH units in the ligand are crucially important for the catalytic activity of the iridium complex.

Synthesis of Unprotected Cyclic Peptide Methylene Dithioacetals by Rhodium-Catalyzed Oxidation of Methanol to Formaldehyde

In the presence of a rhodium catalyst, unprotected peptide dithiols possessing two cysteine residues are efficiently converted to their corresponding cyclic methylene dithioacetals in a mixed solvent of methanol and water (4:1) under an oxygen atmosphere (1 atm). The slow formation of formaldehyde inhibits side reactions by maintaining its concentration at a low level, which is a key feature of this reaction. This method can be applied to peptide dithiols containing amino acids such as Gly, Ala, Ser, Lys, Met, Phe, Tyr, and His and provides cyclic methylene dithioacetals without being affected by other functional groups. Primary alcohols, such as ethanol and isopropanol, can also be employed. Oxytocin can be cyclized to provide a cyclic methylene dithioacetal.

Regioselective Coupling of Different Conjugate Esters by Magnesium Metal Reduction: A Route to Unsymmetrical Adipic Acid Esters

A novel tactic to synthesize unsymmetrical 3-aryladipic acid esters has been developed via magnesium-promoted reductive coupling of ethyl cinnamates with methyl acrylate. In the present methodology, 3-aryladipic acid derivatives were prepared with good functional group tolerance and a wide substrate scope under very mild reaction conditions in good yields. The application of this reaction to dienic acid esters led to the successful control of the reaction to give 5-aryl-oct-3-enedioic acid esters with high regioselectivity.

Iridium-catalyzed α-selective deuteration of alcohols

The development of chemoselective C(sp3)-H deuteration is of particular interest in synthetic chemistry. We herein report the α-selective, iridium(iii)-bipyridonate-catalyzed hydrogen(H)/deuterium(D) isotope exchange of alcohols using deuterium oxide (D2O) as the primary deuterium source. This method enables the direct, chemoselective deuteration of primary and secondary alcohols under basic or neutral conditions without being affected by coordinative functional groups such as imidazole and tetrazole. Successful substrates for deuterium labelling include the pharmaceuticals losartan potassium, rapidosept, guaifenesin, and diprophylline. The deuterated losartan potassium shows higher stability towards the metabolism by CYP2C9 than the protiated analogue. Kinetic and DFT studies indicate that the direct deuteration proceeds through dehydrogenation of alcohol to the carbonyl intermediate, conversion of [IrIII-H] to [IrIII-D] with D2O, and deuteration of the carbonyl intermediate to give the α-deuterated product.

Synthetic approaches to 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF): a stable bio-based diol

Biorefinery is defined as a sustainable process where biomass is converted in a spectrum of marketable products and fuels. In this view, C6 furan-based compounds, usually referred as furanics, have been extensively investigated as aromatic promising building blocks from renewables. 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and 2,5-furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA) are well known examples of furanics whose syntheses and applications have been extensively reviewed in the literature. Herein for the first time it is reported a comprehensive overview on the synthetic procedures to another bio-derived furan compounds, i.e. 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF), a stable bio-based diol with numerous applications as monomer for bio-materials and fuels. Advantages and limitations of the different synthetic approaches are addressed, as well as possible future developments to render this compound part of the biorefinery market.

N-Methylation of Amines with Methanol in the Presence of Carbonate Salt Catalyzed by a Metal-Ligand Bifunctional Ruthenium Catalyst [(p-cymene)Ru(2,2'-bpyO)(H2O)]

A ruthenium complex [(p-cymene)Ru(2,2'-bpyO)(H₂O)] was found to be a general and efficient catalyst for the N-methylation of amines with methanol in the presence of carbonate salt. Moreover, a series of sensitive substituents, such as nitro, ester, cyano, and vinyl groups, were tolerated under present conditions. It was confirmed that OH units in the ligand are crucial for the catalytic activity. Notably, this research exhibited the potential of metal-ligand bifunctional ruthenium catalysts for the hydrogen autotransfer process.

A new and simple method for hydrogen production from cellulose using an iridium catalyst and an ionic liquid under mild conditions was developed.
