Hollow Hydrangea-Like CoRu/Co Architecture as an Excellent Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Evolution

Three-dimensional RuCo alloy nanosheets arrays integrated pinewood-derived porous carbon for high-efficiency electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia

Electricity-driven nitrate (NO3-) to ammonia (NH3) conversion presents a unique opportunity to simultaneously eliminate nitrate from sewage while capturing ammonia. However, the Faradaic efficiency and ammonia yield in this eight-electron process remain unsatisfactory, underscoring the critical need for more effective electrocatalysts. In this study, a RuCo alloy nanosheets electrodeposited on pinewood-derived three-dimensional porous carbon (RuCo@TDC) is introduced as a highly-efficient electrocatalyst for the nitrate reduction reaction. The RuCo@TDC catalyst exhibits superior electrocatalytic performance, achieving the highest NH3 yield of 2.02 ± 0.11 mmol h-1 cm-2 at -0.6 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE) and the highest Faradaic efficiency of 95.7 ± 0.8 % at -0.2 V vs. RHE in an electrolyte mixture of 0.1 M KOH and 0.1 M KNO3. Furthermore, the Zn-NO3- battery using RuCo@TDC as the cathode provides a maximum power density of 2.46 mW cm-2 and a satisfactory NH3 yield of 1110 μg h-1 cm-2.

Sulfite activation by cobaltosic oxide nanohydrangeas for tetracycline degradation: Performance, degradation pathways and mechanism

Sulfite has been used as a classic reductant for the dehalogenation and reduction of organic compounds for a long time, it is recently deemed as a promising alternative (for persulfate) to generate sulfate radical for wastewater treatment due to its low price and eco-toxicity. In contrast with the enormous work developed in the field of tetracycline (TC) degradation via PMS activization, sulfite activization could play a important role in TC degradation but there is only very few available reports in this area. Herein, the novel and efficient CoNHs nanocatalyst is designed and developed, via immobilization of hydrangea-shaped Co₃O₄ nanoparticles onto graphitic carbon nanosheet (GCN), for the degradation of tetracycline via sulfite activation. The detailed characterizations have confirmed that CoNHs possesses a nanohydrangea-shaped structure with high microporosity. The comparison with other supports (such as CeO₂ and MoS₂), CoNHs provides the highest degradation efficiency in TC degradation, due to the synergistic effect between Co₃O₄ and GCN. Free radical quenching experiments and EPR analysis confirm that SO₄•^- and O₂•^- are major reactive oxygen species in the CoNHs/sulfite system. This work could provide a simple, economical and durable cobalt-based catalyst for organic wastewater treatment via sulfite activation.

Recent advances in hollow nanomaterials with multiple dimensions for electrocatalytic water splitting

Electrocatalytic water splitting has great research prospects in the production of green hydrogen energy, and electrocatalysts are the prerequisite. As widely employed efficient electrocatalysts, hollow nanostructures have attracted a lot of research attention due to their excellent catalytic activity and structural stability. Moreover, the abundant catalytically active sites and tunable morphology also make hollow nanomaterials promising electrocatalysts for water splitting. Despite these advantages, the industrial applications of these hollow nanocatalysts are impeded by limitations like the lack of effective synthesis methods and unclear formation mechanisms. Therefore, extensive efforts have been devoted to the development of efficient synthesis strategies to boost the development of more efficient hollow electrocatalysts, and great progress has been achieved in recent years. To gain a better understanding of the rapid development of hollow nanocatalysts for water splitting, we herein organize a review to summarize the recent synthetic methods and advantages of hollow materials with different dimensions. The specific advantages of hollow nanomaterials in electrocatalytic water splitting, such as abundant active sites, a stable structure, high mass transfer efficiency, and reduced aggregation of catalytic particles, are also summarized. Finally, the challenges and prospects of hollow nanostructures with multiple dimensions in electrocatalytic water splitting are further explored.
