Honeycomb-Type TiO2 Films Toward a High Tolerance to Optical Paths for Perovskite Solar Cells

Chemical Reaction of FA Cations Enables Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Organometal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have received great attention owing to a rapid increase in power conversion efficiency (PCE) over the last decade. However, the deficit of long-term stability is a major obstacle to the implementation of PSCs in commercialization. The defects in perovskite films are considered as one of the primary causes. To address this issue, isocyanic acid (HNCO) is introduced as an additive into the perovskite film, in which the added molecules form covalent bonds with FA cations via a chemical reaction. This chemical reaction gives rise to an efficient passivation on the perovskite film, resulting in an improved film quality, a suppressed non-radiation recombination, a facilitated carrier transport, and optimization of energy band levels. As a result, the HNCO-based PSCs achieve a high PCE of 24.41% with excellent storage stability both in an inert atmosphere and in air. Different from conventional passivation methods based on coordination effects, this work presents an alternative chemical reaction for defect passivation, which opens an avenue toward defect-mitigated PSCs showing enhanced performance and stability.

Photonic Crystal Structures for Photovoltaic Applications

Photonic crystals are artificial structures with a spatial periodicity of dielectric permittivity on the wavelength scale. This feature results in a spectral region over which no light can propagate within such a material, known as the photonic band gap (PBG). It leads to a unique interaction between light and matter. A photonic crystal can redirect, concentrate, or even trap incident light. Different materials (dielectrics, semiconductors, metals, polymers, etc.) and 1D, 2D, and 3D architectures (layers, inverse opal, woodpile, etc.) of photonic crystals enable great flexibility in designing the optical response of the material. This opens an extensive range of applications, including photovoltaics. Photonic crystals can be used as anti-reflective and light-trapping surfaces, back reflectors, spectrum splitters, absorption enhancers, radiation coolers, or electron transport layers. This paper presents an overview of the developments and trends in designing photonic structures for different photovoltaic applications.

Cube-like anatase TiO2 mesocrystals as effective electron-transporting materials toward high-performance perovskite solar cells

Electron-transporting materials (ETMs) with higher carrier mobility and a suitable band gap structure play a significant role in determining the photovoltaic performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, cube-like mesoporous single-crystal anatase TiO₂ (Meso-TiO₂) nanoparticles synthesized by using a facile hydrothermal method were utilized as an efficient ETM for PSCs. The superior semiconducting properties of the Meso-TiO₂ based ETM enabled the best power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.05% for a PSC. Moreover, the device retained 80% of its initial PCE after being stored in ambient conditions for 20 days under 25 ± 5% relative humidity. In contrast to the commercial TiO₂ ETM, the Meso-TiO₂ ETM based PSC showed a distinguished interface with better interfacial conditions and improved carrier extraction originating from the cube-like mesoporous single-crystal anatase TiO₂ ETM.
