Maternal threats and college student mental health: The role of perceived anxiety control

Objective: Although parental threatening behaviors are associated with poor mental health outcomes among college students, the underlying mechanisms of this relationship are understudied. This investigation examined the underlying role of perceived anxiety control in the association between childhood exposure to maternal threatening behaviors and depression, worry, and attention/deficit hyperactivity disorder (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) symptoms. Participants: Participants (N = 862; Mage = 18.75 years, SD = 1.04, age range = 18-24) were recruited from a large state university in the northeast. Methods: Participants completed a battery of self-report questionnaires. Results: Tests of indirect effects indicated that greater childhood exposure to maternal threats was associated with lower perceived anxiety control, which in turn was associated with more severe depression, worry, and ADHD symptoms, respectively. Conclusions: Childhood exposure to maternal threatening behaviors may contribute to college students' low perceived anxiety control, which in turn increases the risk for these symptom clusters.

Efficacy of mobile app-based interactive cognitive behavioral therapy using a chatbot for panic disorder

BACKGROUND

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a well-established treatment for panic disorder, but many fewer patients receive this treatment compared to medication-based therapy. Mobile app-based interactive CBT using a chatbot can increase patient access to CBT. We performed a preliminary study to determine whether short-term use of a newly developed chatbot is feasible and effective for relieving panic symptoms.

METHOD

Forty-one patients were randomly assigned to either a chatbot group (n = 21) or control group (n = 20) for a period of 4 weeks. The chatbot group was guided in the use of the chatbot application, while the control group was provided with a book on panic disorder.

MAIN RESULTS

The severity of panic disorder was significantly decreased in the chatbot group, but not in the control group. The social phobia score was significantly decreased and the control helplessness score was significantly increased in the chatbot group compared to the control group.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION

We found that mobile app-based interactive CBT using the chatbot was feasible and effective for reducing the severity of panic symptoms. Using this novel approach to provide CBT would allow clinicians to effect positive therapeutic outcomes with easy accessibility, interactivity, and self-management for patients with panic symptoms.

Anxiety control and metacognitive beliefs mediate the relationship between inflated responsibility and obsessive compulsive symptoms

Research has indicated that beliefs about inflated responsibility, beliefs about perceived control over anxiety-related events and reactions (anxiety control) and metacognitive beliefs about the need to control thoughts are associated with obsessive compulsive symptoms. In the current study we tested a mediation model of the interactions between these variables in predicting obsessive compulsive symptoms. Thirty-seven individuals with obsessive compulsive disorder and 31 controls completed the following self-report instruments: the Responsibility Attitude Scale, the Anxiety Control Scale, the Beliefs about Need to Control Thoughts sub-scale of the Metacognitions Questionnaire 30, and the Padua Inventory. Mann-Whitney U tests revealed that participants in the clinical group scored significantly higher than those in the non-clinical group on all variables. In the mediation model we found that the relationship between beliefs about inflated responsibility and obsessive compulsive symptoms was fully mediated by anxiety control and beliefs about the need to control thoughts. These findings provide support for the significant role played by beliefs about control in predicting the severity of obsessive compulsive symptoms.

Theoretischer Hintergrund: Subjektive Kontrollüberzeugungen werden als wesentlicher Faktor in der Entstehung und Aufrechterhaltung von Angststörungen diskutiert. Der Angstkontrollfragebogen (AKF) stellt das einzige Verfahren dar, das auf die Erfassung angstspezifischer Kontrollüberzeugungen zielt. Fragestellung: Wie ist die psychometrische Güte einer deutschen Übersetzung des AKF zu beurteilen? Methode: Untersuchung des AKF in einer nicht-klinischen und einer klinischen Stichprobe. Ergebnisse: Der AKF Gesamtscore wies befriedigende Reliabilitätskennwerte auf; darüber hinaus wurden Hinweise auf konvergente Validität gefunden. Allerdings stellen die Ergebnisse die Spezifität des Verfahrens für Angsterleben in Frage. Wie bereits in Studien zur Originalversion konnte keine überzeugende Faktorenstruktur etabliert werden. Schlussfolgerungen: Der AKF stellt eine potentiell wichtige Ergänzung nicht-symptomspezifischer Maße zur Erklärung von Psychopathologie dar, bedarf jedoch insbesondere hinsichtlich seiner latenten Struktur weiterer Überprüfung.

Relations among perceived control over anxiety-related events, worry, and generalized anxiety disorder in a sample of adolescents

This study examined the associations among perceived control over anxiety-related events, worry, and both symptoms and diagnoses of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). The sample was comprised of 140 adolescents (60 girls) between the ages of 10 and 17 years (M ( age ) = 14.6 years; SD = 2.25) recruited from the general community. Findings were consistent with hypotheses. Self-reported perceived control over anxiety-related events related negatively to worry as well as symptoms and diagnoses of GAD even after accounting for variance associated with age, gender, and negative affectivity. Results are discussed in terms of the theoretical implications that perceived control over anxiety-related events may have for understanding GAD symptomatology among youth.
