Abstract
The frequency-following response (FFR) to periodic complex sounds is a noninvasive scalp-recorded auditory evoked potential that reflects synchronous phase-locked neural activity to the spectrotemporal components of the acoustic signal along the ascending auditory hierarchy. The FFR has gained recent interest in the fields of audiology and auditory cognitive neuroscience, as it has great potential to answer both basic and applied questions about processes involved in sound encoding, language development, and communication. Specifically, it has become a promising tool in neonates, as its study may allow both early identification of future language disorders and the opportunity to leverage brain plasticity during the first 2 years of life, as well as enable early interventions to prevent and/or ameliorate sound and language encoding disorders. Throughout the present review, we summarize the state of the art of the neonatal FFR and, based on our own extensive experience, present methodological approaches to record it in a clinical environment. Overall, the present review is the first one that comprehensively focuses on the neonatal FFRs applications, thus supporting the feasibility to record the FFR during the first days of life and the predictive potential of the neonatal FFR on detecting short- and long-term language abilities and disruptions.

Abstract
Detailed neural encoding of voice pitch and formant structure plays a crucial role in speech perception, and is of key importance for an appropriate acquisition of the phonetic repertoire in infants since birth. However, the extent to what newborns are capable of extracting pitch and formant structure information from the temporal envelope and the temporal fine structure of speech sounds, respectively, remains unclear. Here, we recorded the frequency-following response (FFR) elicited by a novel two-vowel, rising-pitch-ending stimulus to simultaneously characterize voice pitch and formant structure encoding accuracy in a sample of neonates and adults. Data revealed that newborns tracked changes in voice pitch reliably and no differently than adults, but exhibited weaker signatures of formant structure encoding, particularly at higher formant frequency ranges. Thus, our results indicate a well-developed encoding of voice pitch at birth, while formant structure representation is maturing in a frequency-dependent manner. Furthermore, we demonstrate the feasibility to assess voice pitch and formant structure encoding within clinical evaluation times in a hospital setting, and suggest the possibility to use this novel stimulus as a tool for longitudinal developmental studies of the auditory system.

Abstract
Previous work suggests that auditory-vestibular interactions, which emerge during bodily movement to music, can influence the perception of musical rhythm. In a seminal study on the ontogeny of musical rhythm, Phillips-Silver and Trainor (2005) found that bouncing infants to an unaccented rhythm influenced infants' perceptual preferences for accented rhythms that matched the rate of bouncing. In the current study, we ask whether nascent, diffuse coupling between auditory and motor systems is sufficient to bootstrap short-term Hebbian plasticity in the auditory system and explain infants' preferences for accented rhythms thought to arise from auditory-vestibular interactions. First, we specify a nonlinear, dynamical system in which two oscillatory neural networks, representing developmentally nascent auditory and motor systems, interact through weak, non-specific coupling. The auditory network was equipped with short-term Hebbian plasticity, allowing the auditory network to tune its intrinsic resonant properties. Next, we simulate the effect of vestibular input (e.g., infant bouncing) on infants' perceptual preferences for accented rhythms. We found that simultaneous auditory-vestibular training shaped the model's response to musical rhythm, enhancing vestibular-related frequencies in auditory-network activity. Moreover, simultaneous auditory-vestibular training, relative to auditory- or vestibular-only training, facilitated short-term auditory plasticity in the model, producing stronger oscillator connections in the auditory network. Finally, when tested on a musical rhythm, models which received simultaneous auditory-vestibular training, but not models that received auditory- or vestibular-only training, resonated strongly at frequencies related to their "bouncing," a finding qualitatively similar to infants' preferences for accented rhythms that matched the rate of infant bouncing.

Abstract
From their second year, infants typically begin to show rapid acquisition of receptive and expressive language. Here, we ask why these language skills do not begin to develop earlier. One evolutionary hypothesis is that infants are born when many brains systems are immature and not yet functioning, including those critical to language, because human infants have large have a large head and their mother's pelvis size is limited, necessitating an early birth. An alternative proposal, inspired by discoveries in machine learning, is that the language systems are mature enough to function but need auditory experience to develop effective representations of speech, before the language functions that manifest in behaviour can emerge. Growing evidence, in particular from neuroimaging, is supporting this latter hypothesis. We have previously shown with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that the acoustic radiation, carrying rich information to auditory cortex, is largely mature by 1 month, and using functional MRI (fMRI) that auditory cortex is processing many complex features of natural sounds by 3 months. However, speech perception relies upon a network of regions beyond auditory cortex, and it is not established if this network is mature. Here we measure the maturity of the speech network using functional connectivity with fMRI in infants at 3 months (N = 6) and 9 months (N = 7), and in an adult comparison group (N = 15). We find that functional connectivity in speech networks is mature at 3 months, suggesting that the delay in the onset of language is not due to brain immaturity but rather to the time needed to develop representations through experience. Future avenues for the study of language development are proposed, and the implications for clinical care and infant education are discussed.
