Energy conservation characterizes sleep in sharks

Sharks represent the earliest group of jawed vertebrates and as such, they may provide original insight for understanding the evolution of sleep in more derived animals. Unfortunately, beyond a single behavioural investigation, very little is known about sleep in these ancient predators. As such, recordings of physiological indicators of sleep in sharks have never been reported. Reduced energy expenditure arising from sustained restfulness and lowered metabolic rate during sleep have given rise to the hypothesis that sleep plays an important role for energy conservation. To determine whether this idea applies also to sharks, we compared metabolic rates of draughtsboard sharks (Cephaloscyllium isabellum) during periods ostensibly thought to be sleep, along with restful and actively swimming sharks across a 24 h period. We also investigated behaviours that often characterize sleep in other animals, including eye closure and postural recumbency, to establish relationships between physiology and behaviour. Overall, lower metabolic rate and a flat body posture reflect sleep in draughtsboard sharks, whereas eye closure is a poorer indication of sleep. Our results support the idea for the conservation of energy as a function of sleep in these basal vertebrates.

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia as an index of vagal activity during stress in infants: respiratory influences and their control

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) is related to cardiac vagal outflow and the respiratory pattern. Prior infant studies have not systematically examined respiration rate and tidal volume influences on infant RSA or the extent to which infants' breathing is too fast to extract a valid RSA. We therefore monitored cardiac activity, respiration, and physical activity in 23 six-month old infants during a standardized laboratory stressor protocol. On average, 12.6% (range 0–58.2%) of analyzed breaths were too short for RSA extraction. Higher respiration rate was associated with lower RSA amplitude in most infants, and lower tidal volume was associated with lower RSA amplitude in some infants. RSA amplitude corrected for respiration rate and tidal volume influences showed theoretically expected strong reductions during stress, whereas performance of uncorrected RSA was less consistent. We conclude that stress-induced changes of peak-valley RSA and effects of variations in breathing patterns on RSA can be determined for a representative percentage of infant breaths. As expected, breathing substantially affects infant RSA and needs to be considered in studies of infant psychophysiology.

Sleep viewed as a state of adaptive inactivity

Sleep is often viewed as a vulnerable state that is incompatible with behaviours that nourish and propagate species. This has led to the hypothesis that sleep has survived because it fulfills some universal, but as yet unknown, vital function. I propose that sleep is best understood as a variant of dormant states seen throughout the plant and animal kingdoms and that it is itself highly adaptive because it optimizes the timing and duration of behaviour. Current evidence indicates that ecological variables are the main determinants of sleep duration and intensity across species.

Sleep-waking patterns in hypoxic kittens

Kittens at 10, 20, and 40 days of age were made intermittently hypoxic in 10 or 7% oxygen chambers for either 3 or 8 days. Respiration, EKG, EEG, and neck and eye movements were recorded during hypoxia. Compared to 21% oxygen controls, hypoxic kittens had fewer and shorter epochs of active sleep, and longer epochs of quiet sleep. Some hypoxic kittens exhibited slow and labored respiration during quiet sleep and transitional epochs, which reversed during active sleep. Kittens that showed most pronounced respiratory changes or died had less active sleep than kittens that compensated adequately and survived. These results suggest that active sleep may be important for stimulation of respiration during infancy. Suppression of active sleep, augmentation of quiet sleep, or other disturbances to normal sleep-waking patterns during hypoxia, may increase the risk for hypoxic respiratory depression and death.
