Preservice educators' and noneducators' knowledge and perceptions of responsibility about dyslexia

Mental health services use among learning disabilities: data from a population-based study

PURPOSE

People with learning disabilities have complex challenges and needs that differ from people without these conditions. Accessing needed health and mental health care may be affected by level of independence and severity of learning challenges. Our study examined factors and associations which impact help seeking and satisfaction with mental health care in a Canadian nationally representative sample.

METHODS

Logistic regression and multinomial logistic regression was used to analyze the 2012 Canadian Community Health Survey- Mental Health (CCHS 2012) cross-sectional survey. We investigated the odds of distressed individuals (1) perceiving a need for mental health care, (2) seeking out professional mental health care, and (3) if their needs were met by mental health services. The presence of a learning disability was assessed as a moderator variable in all models.

RESULTS

Distressed adults with learning disabilities did not perceive a need for mental health care as often as distressed adults without a learning disability (OR = 3.82;95%CI:1.64,8.93 vs. OR = 12.00;95%CI:9.19,15.67). Distressed adults with a learning disability weren't as likely to seek out mental health services, but were more satisfied with the mental health care they received as compared to adults without a learning disability.

CONCLUSION

The findings suggest that adults with learning disabilities have unmet needs. They are less likely to perceive a need for treatment, or to seek treatment, when they are distressed. Future investigation is necessary to understand the factors that influence perceived need and treatment seeking in this under-served population.

Technical adequacy of measuring teachers' knowledge of dyslexia

Given the rapid growth in educational policies targeting educators' knowledge of dyslexia, this study explored the technical adequacy of a common instrument for measuring that knowledge. The responses of 1141 preservice teachers were scored in three ways: polytomously with the original 4-point Likert scale, dichotomously as true-false, and dichotomously as though the options were multiple choice. An exploratory factor analysis suggested at least one-third of the items needed to be removed. Confirmatory factor analyses suggested a one-factor model with polytomous scoring had the best fit to the data, but only six items loaded. All models demonstrated unacceptable internal consistency reliability (<0.70). Because no technically adequate version of the measure was identified, questions remain about basing policy on scores from these instruments. However, the findings indicated ways this type of measure might be improved.

Removing the academic framing in student evaluations improves achievement in children with dyslexia: The mediating role of self-judgement of competence

Self-judgement is known to play a crucial role in academic achievement, and as such, may be expected to have an impact on students with dyslexia. Their self-judgements may reflect the negative stereotype of low competence that targets people with disabilities. Their repeated academic failures may lead to a negative association between "school" and "failure". The aim of the present study was to investigate how such factors contribute to academic failure in students with dyslexia. Participants were 183 French middle school students. We assessed students' self-judgement and manipulated the framing of performance tasks so that students completed literacy tasks in both academic and non-academic forms. We expected a detrimental impact of dyslexia on performance in academic but not in non-academic tasks. We also expected self-judgement to account for this difference. Students with dyslexia perceive themselves as less competent than students without dyslexia. Significantly, structural equation modeling revealed that students with dyslexia performed poorly in academic tasks, compared to students without dyslexia. This difference no longer appeared in non-academic tasks. Self-judgement of competence is a predictor of the performance of students with and without dyslexia at school and their impact is related to how the academic features of the tasks are emphasized.

Informal preparation and years of experience: Key correlates of dyslexia knowledge among Massachusetts early elementary teachers

BACKGROUND

Dyslexia is a neurobiological condition affecting phonological processing and characterized by reading and phonological awareness difficulties. We assessed correlations between dyslexia knowledge and five independent variables among early elementary teachers in Massachusetts.

METHODS

We designed a survey based on two published assessment tools and surveyed 92 early elementary teachers. Using univariate and multivariate linear regression models, we assessed the relationships among knowledge (dependent variable) and confidence, feelings of preparedness, years of teaching experience, informal education and professional development opportunities (independent variables).

RESULTS

The mean knowledge score was 68 ± 14%; teachers performed best on questions about perceptions of dyslexia, classroom management/teaching strategies and some dyslexia characteristics. Informal education and years of teaching experience were consistently positively associated with knowledge.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS

Formal training and professional development opportunities may need to focus more specifically on learning disabilities and dyslexia. Teachers should also have input on professional development needs. Our findings suggest a need for additional studies on strategies to improve educator knowledge of dyslexia and assess outcomes.

Dyslexia knowledge, perceived preparedness, and professional development needs of in-service educators

The purpose of this study was to investigate New Jersey educators' dyslexia knowledge and misconceptions, professional development perceptions and needs, and perceived preparedness regarding teaching students with dyslexia. A second purpose was to investigate what factors predicted New Jersey educators' knowledge about dyslexia. A total of 705 in-service educators completed a survey about their dyslexia knowledge, perceived preparedness, and professional development perceptions. Participants had accurate overall knowledge about dyslexia, but some prevailing misconceptions were still present. The greatest predictor of dyslexia knowledge was years of experience in working with students with dyslexia. Reading specialists, educators with greater perceived preparedness and those educators who had training in multi-sensory approaches to instruction had significantly more dyslexia knowledge than other educators. Approximately half of the participants felt prepared to teach students with dyslexia and that working with students with dyslexia prepared them the most. Participants perceived that multi-sensory approaches were the most effective professional development and their undergraduate education was the least effective. Most participants were in support of further professional development on the topic of dyslexia. Implications for in-service educators' professional development and future research directions are discussed.

A Review of Online Dyslexia Learning Modules

This paper presents a comprehensive review of publicly available online dyslexia learning modules with a particular focus on the extent to which modules address the prevalent myth that dyslexia is caused by "backwards reading." The authors conducted a systematic internet search to identify publicly available online dyslexia learning modules and coded the content across education, neurocognition, and policy disciplinary domains. We identified 18 topics across a small number (N = 14) of publicly available modules that focused on dyslexia, with only two modules directly addressing this dyslexia myth. While both identified this myth as false, neither provided information about the neurocognitive underpinnings of dyslexia to explain why this myth is false. This review will be useful for guiding further development of online dyslexia learning modules which are urgently needed due to persisting misinformation about this disorder. The coded content reviews of each module will also be beneficial for directing attention to existing resources for professional development on dyslexia.
