Ecological theory of mutualism: Robust patterns of stability and thresholds in two-species population models

Potential applications of microalgae-bacteria consortia in wastewater treatment and biorefinery

The use of microalgae-bacteria consortia (MBC) for wastewater treatment has garnered attention as their interactions impart greater environmental adaptability and stability compared with that obtained by only microalgae or bacteria use, thereby improving the efficiency of pollutant removal and bio-product productivity. Additionally, the value-added bio-products produced via biorefineries can improve economic competitiveness and environmental sustainability. Therefore, this review focuses on the interaction between microalgae and bacteria that leads to nutrient exchange, gene transfer and signal transduction to comprehensively understand the interaction mechanisms underlying their strong adaptability. In addition, it includes recent research in which MBC has been efficiently used to treat various wastewater. Moreover, the review summarizes the use of MBC-produced biomass in a biorefining context to produce biofuel, biomaterial, high-value bio-products and bio-fertilizer. Overall, more effort is needed to identify the symbiotic mechanism in MBC to provide a foundation for circular bio-economy and environmentally friendly development programmes.

The Role of Indirect Effects in Coevolution along the Mutualism-Antagonism Continuum

AbstractThe web of interactions in a community drives the coevolution of species. Yet it is unclear how the outcome of species interactions influences the coevolutionary dynamics of communities. This is a pressing matter, as changes to the outcome of interactions may become more common with human-induced global change. Here, we combine network and evolutionary theory to explore coevolutionary outcomes in communities harboring mutualistic and antagonistic interactions. We show that as the ratio of mutualistic to antagonistic interactions decreases, selection imposed by direct partners outweighs that imposed by indirect partners. This weakening of indirect effects results in communities composed of species with dissimilar traits and fast rates of adaptation. These changes are more pronounced when specialist consumers are the first species to engage in antagonistic interactions. Hence, a shift in the outcome of species interactions may reverberate across communities and alter the direction and speed of coevolution.

The ecological importance of hybridization

Hybridization as an evolutionary process has been studied in depth over the past few decades. Research has focused on its role in shaping reproductive barriers, its adaptive value, and its genomic consequences. In contrast, our knowledge of ecological dimensions of hybridization is still in its infancy, despite hybridization being an inherently ecological interaction. Using examples from various organisms, we show that hybridization can affect and be affected by non-reproductive interactions, including predation, competition, parasitism, mutualism, commensalism, and organism-environment interactions, with significant implications for community structure and ecosystem functioning. However, since these dimensions of hybridization have mostly been revealed from studies designed to decipher other evolutionary processes, we argue that much of the eco-evolutionary importance of hybridization is yet to be discovered.

Coupled Oscillators in an Agroecosystem: Integrating Direct and Indirect Effects

AbstractAgricultural pests are increasingly appreciated as subjects of ecology. One particular case, a pest in coffee production, is analyzed here using the conceptual framework of complex systems, increasingly acknowledged as having an obvious home in the field of ecology, notorious for its complex structures. The particular case analyzed here arguably falls under the control of the complexity of the ecological system rather than of a simple magic bullet of population regulation. The system, which has been under study in southern Mexico for the past quarter century, is analyzed through the lens of neutral oscillations of the classical nondissipative Lotka-Volterra system. Based on three consumer/resource pairs (populations of [1] an ant, [2] a scale insect, [3] a beetle predator of the scale insect, [4] a fungal pathogen of the scale insect, and [5] a fly parasitoid of the ant), this five-dimensional system is well known qualitatively. Coupling all agents through both direct effects and trait-mediated indirect effects, the behavior of the neutral oscillation form of the system reveals a complex set of behaviors, including harmonized invariant sets, chaos, and/or quasiperiodicity. Such behaviors are well-known subjects in the science of complex systems and, it is argued, are ultimately sufficient to effect a degree of regulation on the pest, independent of explicit density-dependent feedback. Control of the system is thus seen as arguably actuated through its complexity, independent of any classic dissipative force.
