Host plants and pollination regions for the long‐distance migratory noctuid moth, Hadula trifolii Hufnagel in China

Impact of climate change on the geographical distribution and niche dynamics of Gastrodia elata

Background

Gastrodia elata is widely used in China as a valuable herbal medicine. Owing to its high medicinal and nutrient value, wild resources of G. elata have been overexploited and its native areas have been severely damaged. Understanding the impacts of climate change on the distribution of this endangered species is important for the conservation and sustainable use of G. elata.

Methods

We used the optimized maximum entropy model to simulate the potential distribution of G. elata under contemporary and future time periods (1970-2000, 2050s, 2070s, and 2090s) and different climate change scenarios (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5). Under these conditions, we investigated the key environmental factors influencing the distribution of G. elata as well as the spatial and temporal characteristics of its niche dynamics.

Results

With high Maxent model accuracy (AUCmean = 0.947 ± 0.012, and the Kappa value is 0.817), our analysis revealed that annual precipitation, altitude, and mean temperature of driest quarter are the most important environmental factors influencing the distribution of G. elata. Under current bioclimatic conditions, the potentially suitable area for G. elata in China is 71.98 × 10⁴ km², while the highly suitable region for G. elata growth is 7.28 × 10⁴ km². Our models for three future periods under four climate change scenarios indicate that G. elata can maintain stable distributions in southern Shaanxi, southwestern Hubei, and around the Sichuan basin, as these areas are highly suitable for its growth. However, the center of the highly suitable areas of G. elata shift depending on different climatic scenarios. The values of niche overlap for G. elata show a decreasing trend over the forecasted periods, of which the niche overlap under the SSP3-7.0 scenario shows the greatest decrease.

Discussions

Under the condition of global climate change in the future, our study provides basic reference data for the conservation and sustainable utilization of the valuable and endangered medicinal plant G. elata. It is important to carefully choose the protection area of G. elata wild resources according the suitable area conditions modeled. Moreover, these findings will be valuable for providing insights into the breeding and artificial cultivation of this plant, including the selection of suitable areas for planting.

Pollen Molecular Identification from a Long-Distance Migratory Insect, Spodoptera exigua, as Evidenced for Its Regional Pollination in Eastern Asia

Understanding plant-insect interactions requires the uncovering of the host plant use of insect herbivores, but such information is scarce for most taxa, including nocturnal moth species, despite their vital role as herbivores and pollinators. In this study, we determined the plant species visited by an important moth species, Spodoptera exigua, by analyzing attached pollen on migratory individuals in Northeast China. Pollen grains were dislodged from 2334 S. exigua long-distance migrants captured between 2019 and 2021 on a small island in the center of the Bohai Strait, which serves as a seasonal migration pathway for this pest species, and 16.1% of the tested moths exhibited pollen contamination, primarily on the proboscis. Subsequently, 33 taxa from at least 23 plant families and 29 genera were identified using a combination of DNA barcoding and pollen morphology, primarily from the Angiosperm, Dicotyledoneae. Moreover, the sex, inter-annual, and seasonal differences in pollen adherence ratio and pollen taxa were revealed. Notably, compared to previously reported pollen types found on several other nocturnal moths, we found that almost all of the above 33 pollen taxa can be found in multiple nocturnal moth species, providing another important example of conspecific attraction. Additionally, we also discussed the indicative significance of the pollen present on the bodies of migratory individuals for determining their migratory route. Overall, by delineating the adult feeding and pollination behavior of S. exigua, we advanced our understanding of the interactions of the moths with their host plants, and its migration pattern, as well as facilitated the design of (area-wide) management strategies to preserve and optimize ecosystem services that they provide.

Biological Characteristics and Energy Metabolism of Migrating Insects

Through long-distance migration, insects not only find suitable breeding locations and increase the survival space and opportunities for the population but also facilitate large-scale material, energy, and information flow between regions, which is important in maintaining the stability of agricultural ecosystems and wider natural ecosystems. In this study, we summarize the changes in biological characteristics such as morphology, ovarian development, reproduction, and flight capability during the seasonal migration of the insect. In consideration of global research work, the interaction between flight and reproduction, the influence and regulation of the insulin-like and juvenile hormone on the flight and reproductive activities of migrating insects, and the types of energy substances, metabolic processes, and hormone regulation processes during insect flight are elaborated. This systematic review of the latest advances in the studies on insect migration biology and energy metabolism will help readers to better understand the biological behavior and regulation mechanism of the energy metabolism of insect migration.

Pollen and nectar have different effects on the development and reproduction of noctuid moths

Although many noctuid insects are agricultural pests that threaten food production, they are also the major nocturnal pollinators of flowering plants. Larval foods of noctuid pest insects have been well studied for developing control strategies, but knowledge on host plants for the adults is rather scarce. Here, the impact of plant-derived foods on adult survival, fecundity and reproductive physiology of four global species of noctuid pests (Mythimna separata Walker, Mythimna loreyi Duponchel, Athetis lepigone Möschler, and Hadula trifolii Hufnagel) was assessed in laboratory experiments. Our results indicated that nectar slowed testis decay and prolonged the oviposition period and lifespan, increasing fecundity. Acacia nectar increased the longevity of male and female adults by 3.2∼10.9 and 2.4∼5.0 days, respectively, and fecundity of females by 1.22∼3.34 times compared to water-fed individuals. The fitness among the different species of noctuid moths differed on specific pollen diets. On pine pollen, the fecundity of female moths of M. separata, A. lepigone and H. trifolii was 10.06, 33.52, and 28.61%, respectively, lower than those of the water-fed females, but the fecundity of female moths of M. loreyi on pine pollen was 2.11 times greater than for the water-fed individuals. This work provides valuable information on the nutritional ecology for noctuid moths, which can aid the development and design of nutritional attractants within noctuid pests-infected cropping systems and provide a basis for effective and targeted management of global noctuid pests.
