Translocation experiment reveals capacity for mountain pine beetle persistence under climate warming

Evidence for an adult summer diapause in mountain pine beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) that varies geographically and among haplogroups

Identifying dormancy traits is important for predicting insect population success, particularly in a changing climate that could disrupt evolved traits. The mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins) is native to North America, is responsible for millions of acres of tree mortality, and is expanding northward in Canada. Research has identified thermal traits important to epidemic-phase ecology that vary among populations. Genomic research identified 3 mountain pine beetle haplogroups representing Pleistocene glacial refugia. Significant variation in generation timing aligning with the haplogroups has been observed. The adult stage was previously identified as the likely cause of differences among populations, although the mechanism(s) remain unclear. We tested for an adult summer diapause that varies among populations from 2 haplogroups, southern Colorado (CO) (central haplogroup) and southern Idaho (ID) (eastern haplogroup) using respirometry and reproduction experiments. Warm temperatures (25 °C) resulted in reduced respiration rates of central haplogroup mountain pine beetle compared to a cool temperature treatment (15 °C), whereas respiration of the eastern haplogroup did not differ between the treatments. Mated pairs of central haplogroup mountain pine beetle reared/held at 15 °C were more likely to be classified with a higher reproductive success rating compared to pairs reared/held at 25 °C. These results support a facultative summer adult diapause in southern CO central haplogroup mountain pine beetle. Manifestation of this diapause was low/absent among adults from the northerly ID location. This diapause likely serves to maintain univoltinism shown to be important for mountain pine beetle epidemic-phase ecology. The variation occurring among haplogroups highlights the long-term, evolved processes driving local adaptations in mountain pine beetle.

A mountain pine beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) adult development rate model confirms evolved geographic differences

Insects live in a wide range of thermal environments and have evolved species- and location-specific physiological processes for survival in hot and cold extremes. Thermally driven dormancy strategies, development rates and thresholds are important for synchronizing cohorts within a population and to local climates and often vary among populations within a species. Mountain pine beetle (MPB), Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae), is a widely distributed forest insect native to North America with clinal genetic differentiation in thermally dependent traits. MPB development occurs in Pinus phloem beneath the bark, and its cryptic habitat makes experimentation difficult, particularly for the adult stage. We describe a novel method for modeling MPB adult development following pupation and terminating in emergence from a brood tree. We focus on an Arizona (southern) MPB population with previously described preadult development rates. Field-observed tree attack, adult emergence, and phloem temperature data are combined in a parameterized cohort model and candidate rate curves are evaluated to describe adult emergence timing. Model competition indicates that the Brière rate curve provided the best fit to field data and performed well under cross-validation. Results confirm that the development of Arizona MPB adults is slower than the previously described development rate of more northern Utah adults. Using the estimated adult rate curve in a scenario of increasing mean temperatures, we show that the timing of second-generation adult emergence in the same year would result in cold-intolerant lifestages during winter, limiting the success of bivoltine populations.

Oviposition Model for a Southern Population of Mountain Pine Beetle

We develop a predictive oviposition model for a southern population of mountain pine beetle (MPB) using a previously developed rate curve, incorporating variation in both oviposition rate and fecundity. We also introduce a method for determining the time delay before oviposition. The model describes the probability of oviposition for a season of MPB attacks using hourly phloem temperature and adult MPB attack data. We also develop an asymptotic approximation of MPB oviposition that is much less computationally taxing. The detailed oviposition model and its asymptotic approximation are compared with other ovipositional models for MPB; the predictive capacity of each model is evaluated using previously published observations.

Gene expression studies of plastic and evolutionary responses to global warming

Phenotypic plasticity can be a rapid response for coping with global warming, yet may be insufficient to protect species from extinction. Evolutionary adaptation may reinforce adaptive or oppose maladaptive plastic responses. With advances in technology whole transcriptomes can provide us with an unprecedented overview of genes and functional processes underlying the interplay between plasticity and evolution. We advocate that insects provide ideal opportunities to study plasticity in non-adapted and thermally adapted populations to infer reaction norms across the whole transcriptome ('reactionomes'). This can advance our understanding of how the interplay between plasticity and evolution shapes responses to warming. So far, a limited number of studies suggest predominantly maladaptive plastic responses to novel environments that are reduced with time, but much more research is needed to infer general patterns.

Field Translocation of Mountain Pine Beetles Suggests Phoretic Mite Communities Are Locally Adapted, and Mite Populations Respond Variably to Climate Warming

Climate warming has significant effects on forest insect populations, particularly bark beetles, which cause millions of hectares of forest tree damage. Bark beetles live alongside a diverse host of other organisms which affect the success of beetle attacks on trees and are also affected by climate changes. Here, we explore climate effects on symbiotic mite communities associated with the mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae). We show that warming causes significant shifts in the abundance of mites. These effects were dependent on source population, suggesting mite populations are adapted to their local climates. Understanding beetle–mite patterns is important because mites can directly affect beetle reproduction by feeding on eggs, or indirectly affect beetle health by introducing fungi. Our results provide foundational information for understanding how climate change will affect beetle–mite associations; and serve to help determine how these shifting associations will affect the success of bark beetles in forest ecosystems.

Abstract

Temperature is a key determining factor in the population dynamics of forest insects and their associated biota. Bark beetles, often considered key agents of change in forest ecosystems, are particularly affected by warming in their environment. Beetles associate with various phoretic mite species that have direct/indirect effects on beetle fitness and population dynamics, although there is limited knowledge of how temperature affects these communities. Here, we use a field reciprocal translocation experiment with the addition of a novel “warming” environment to represent future changes in local environment in two populations of a keystone bark beetle species (Dendroctonus ponderosae). We hypothesize that mite community abundances as carried by bark beetles are significantly altered when not in their native environments and when subjected to climate warming. We use multivariate generalized linear models based on species abundance data to show that mite community compositions significantly differ across different field climates; and that these patterns diverge between source populations, indicating local adaptation. Our study offers foundational information on the general effects of simulated climate-warming on the compositional shifts of common and abundant biotic associates of mountain pine beetles and may be used as a model system for other important insect–mite systems.
