Water velocity shapes fish movement behavior

Stream and river ecosystems present fluvial fishes with a dynamic energy landscape because moving water generates heterogeneous flow fields that are rarely static in space and time. Fish movement behavior should be consistent with conserving energy in these dynamic flowing environments, but little evidence supporting this hypothesis exists. Here, we tested experimentally whether three general movement behaviors-against the current, with the current, or holding position (i.e., staying in one position and location)-were performed in a way consistent with minimizing the cost of swimming in a heterogeneous flow field. We tested the effects of water velocity on movement behavior across three age classes (0, 1, and 5 years) of two different fluvial specialist fishes, the pallid sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus albus) and shovelnose sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus platorynchus). Individuals from the three age classes were exposed to a continuous and dynamic velocity field ranging from 0.02 to 0.53 m s-1, which represented natural benthic flow regimes occupied by these species in rivers. Both sturgeon species exhibited the same pattern with regard to their tendency to hold position, move upstream, or move downstream. Moving downstream was positively associated with velocity for all age groups. Moving upstream was inversely related to velocity for young fish, but as the fish aged, moving upstream was not related to water velocity. The oldest fish (age 5) moved upstream more frequently compared to the younger age classes. Holding position within a water current was the most frequent behavior and occurred with similar probability across the range of experimental velocity for youngest fish (age 0), but was inversely related to velocity in older fish. Our experiment across age classes suggests that the suite of swimming behaviors exhibited by fluvial specialists might have evolved to mitigate the energetic costs of complex energy landscapes generated by moving water to ultimately maximize net energy gain.

Contrasting patterns of genetic and phenotypic divergence of two sympatric congeners, Phragmites australis and P. hirsuta, in heterogeneous habitats

Habitat heterogeneity leads to genome-wide differentiation and morphological and ecological differentiation, which will progress along the speciation continuum, eventually leading to speciation. Phragmites hirsuta and Phragmites australis are sympatric congeners that coexist in saline-alkaline meadow soil (SAS) and sandy soil (SS) habitats of the Songnen Meadow. The results provided genetic evidence for two separate species of reeds. Genetic diversity and spatial genetic structure supported the specialist-generalist variation hypothesis (SGVH) in these two sympatric reed species, suggesting that P. australis is a generalist and P. hirsuta is a habitat specialist. When we compared these different species with respect to phenotypic and genetic variation patterns in different habitats, we found that the phenotypic differentiation of P. australis between the two habitats was higher than that of P. hirsuta. Multiple subtle differences in morphology, genetic background, and habitat use collectively contribute to ecological success for similar congeners. This study provided evidence of the two reed congeners, which should contribute to their success in harsh environments.

Using Age-0 Stocking to Assess Growth and Recruitment of Endangered Pallid Sturgeon Scaphirhynchus albus

(1) Assessing growth and recruitment can be difficult during early life history, especially for rare species such as the pallid sturgeon Scaphirhynchus albus (federally endangered in the United States). One potential tool to address this knowledge gap is the stocking of age-0 individuals. (2) During July 2018, two stocking events of marked age-0 pallid sturgeon (53–56 or 41–42 days old) occurred in the lower Missouri River resulting in the release of 8495 individuals. Over the following three years, pallid sturgeon were sampled with baited trotlines and benthic trawls during routine monitoring. (3) During this period, we captured 77 individuals that recruited to age 1 or older. Only 9% of captured individuals yielded length-at-age values falling below the 95% prediction interval for pallid sturgeon raised entirely in an energetically favorable hatchery environment with abundant food resources. (4) These results suggest that the lower Missouri River is capable of supporting hatchery-level growth for young pallid sturgeon. This study also provided a unique opportunity to document recruitment to age-1 of age-0 pallid sturgeon stocked at relatively small sizes, which highlights the potential benefits of utilizing stocking to address endangered species knowledge gaps.

Cross-species Exon Capture and Whole Exome Sequencing: Application, Utility and Challenges for Genomic Resource Development in Non-model Species

Comprehending the genetic architecture of complex traits has many applications in evolution, ecology, conservation biology and plant and animal production systems. Underlying research questions in these fields are diverse species that often have limited genetic information available. In aquaculture, for example, genetic progress has been slow in many species due to a lack in such genetic information. In this study, zebrafish (as a well-studied model species) was used in cross-species transfer to develop genomic resources and identify candidate genes underling growth differentials in dusky kob. Dusky kob is a Sciaenid finfish and an emerging aquaculture species. The zebrafish All Exon Predesigned Probe-set capture protocol was used to enrich fractionated DNA samples from kob, classified as either large or small, before massive parallel sequencing on the Ion Torrent platform. Although vast quantities of sequence data were generated, only about 30% of contigs could be identified as zebrafish homologues. There were numerous species-specific sequences and inconsistent coverage of sequencing products across samples, likely due to non-specific binding of the probe-set as a result of the evolutionary divergence between zebrafish and kob. Nonetheless, more than 55,000 SNPs could be reliably identified and genotyped to the individual level. Using SNP genotypic divergence estimates, between large and small cohorts, a number of candidate genes associated with growth was also identified for future investigation. These findings contribute to the growing body of evidence demonstrating the utility of a cross-species capture approach in the development of important genomic resources for understanding traits of interest in species without reference genomes.

Temperature effects on performance and physiology of two prairie stream minnows

Earth's atmosphere has warmed by ~1°C over the past century and continues to warm at an increasing rate. Effects of atmospheric warming are already visible in most major ecosystems and are evident across all levels of biological organization. Linking functional responses of individuals to temperature is critical for predicting responses of populations and communities to global climate change. The southern redbelly dace Chrosomus erythrogaster and the central stoneroller Campostoma anomalum are two minnows (Cyprinidae) that commonly occur in the Flint Hills region of the USA but show different patterns of occurrence, with dace largely occupying headwater reaches and stonerollers persisting in both headwater and intermediate-sized streams. We tested for differences between species in critical thermal maximum, energy metabolism, sustained swimming and activity over an ecologically relevant temperature gradient of acclimation temperatures. Typically, metrics increased with acclimation temperature for both species, although stoneroller activity decreased with temperature. We observed a significant interaction between species and temperature for critical thermal maxima, where stonerollers only had higher critical thermal maxima at the coldest temperature and at warm temperatures compared to the dace. We did not find evidence suggesting differences in the energy metabolism of dace and stonerollers. We detected interspecific differences in sustained swimming performance, with dace having higher swimming speed than stonerollers regardless of acclimation temperature. Finally, there was a significant interaction between temperature and species for activity; dace activity was higher at intermediate and warm temperatures compared to stonerollers. We observed subtle interspecific differences in how performance metrics responded to temperature that did not always align with observed patterns of distribution for these species. Thus, other ecological factors likely are important drivers of distributional patterns in these species.
