Synthesis and Characterization of Two Silver Iodides with One- and Three-Dimensional Hybrid Structures Constructed From Ag···Ag Interactions and Organic Templates

Organic-inorganic haloargentate hybrids of [Me-dabco]Ag2X3 (X = I or Br) with halide ions manipulating the crystal structure, phase transition, and dielectric behavior

Two haloargentate hybrids, [Me-dabco]Ag₂X₃ (Me-dabco = 1-methyl-1,4-diazabicyclo-[2.2.2]octan-1-ium, X = I (1) or Br (2)), with the same formula but different structures have been synthesized by a slow evaporation method and characterized by microanalysis, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric, and powder X-ray diffraction techniques. Hybrid 1 consists of completely isolated [Ag₄I₆]^2- clusters, while hybrid 2 exhibits a complicated one-dimensional (1D) chain structure formed by four different configurations of neutral chains and two dissimilar configurations of anionic chains. Hybrid 2 undergoes two reversible order-disorder phase transitions, while hybrid 1 displays one reversible and one irreversible structural phase transition. Both 1 and 2 displayed step-like dielectric anomalies in the vicinity of the phase transition temperature. The corresponding dielectric constants in the high dielectric states are approximately 13 and 6 times higher than those in the low dielectric states for 1 and 2, respectively. Interestingly, the subtle change of halides from I^- to Br^- significantly affects the aggregated structure of haloargentate, the phase transition, and dielectric behaviors, revealing the typical 'butterfly effect' with the ion radii of halides in these two haloargentate hybrids.

Silver-Rich Hybrid Framework Iodide Based on [Ag8I6]2+ Clusters Displays Low-Temperature Dual Emission and Luminescence Thermochromism

Cluster-based framework metal iodides have diverse structures and excellent luminescence properties, and show promising applications in sensing and solid-state lighting. However, the design and synthesis of these materials remain great challenges because excess I^- ions introduced into the synthesis systems decrease the condensation degree of M-I units. In this work, a new strategy is developed to control the condensation behavior of Ag-I units, and a new silver-rich cluster-based framework iodide [DabcoAg₈I₆(SPh)₂]_n (1) (Dabco = 1,4-diazabicyclo [2.2.2] octane) has been synthesized under solvothermal conditions in the presence of silver thiophenolate (AgSPh)_n. Compound 1 features a three-dimensional (3-D) cluster-based framework with a pillared layer structure composed of cationic [Ag₈I₆]²⁺ clusters bridged by SPh^- and Dabco, and displays low-temperature dual emission and luminescence thermochromism.

New photoluminescent iodoargentates with bisimidazole derivatives as countercations

In this article, three bisimidazole derivatives (1,4-bis(2-ethylimidazol-1-yl)butane, L1; 4,4′-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl)-1,1′-biphenyl, L2′; and 1,3-bis(2-ethylimidazol-1-yl)propane, L3) were employed to solvothermally react with AgI in an acidic environment, creating three new 1-D chained iodoargentates [H(L1)][Ag₅I₆]·DMF (DMF = N,N′-dimethylformamide) 1, [L2][Ag₃I₅] (L2²⁺ = 4,4′-di(1H-imidazol-1-ium)-1,1′-biphenyl) 2, and [H₂(L3)][Ag₂I₄] 3. L2²⁺ in 2 originated from the in situ N-alkylation of L2′ with the CH₃OH solvent. X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis reveals that (i) in 1, Ag⁺ and I⁻ aggregate to form a 1-D tube-like iodoargentate, which exhibits the same topology as the carbon tube; (ii) the chain structure of the iodoargentate in 2 is based on a kind of trinuclear Ag–I cluster, which can be viewed as a segment of the classical cubic M₄I₄ cluster; (iii) the chain structure of the iodoargentate in 3 is simple, which can be described as a linear arrangement of the AgI₄ tetrahedra by sharing edges. The photoluminescence analysis reveals that at 77 K, (i) 1 and 2 emit strong yellow light with ms-grade photoluminescence lifetimes (5.460 ms for 1, 6.931 ms for 2); (ii) 3 possesses photochromic luminescence properties. Upon excitation at 254 nm, it emits blue-green light, whereas upon excitation at 365 nm, it emits yellow light.

Three bisimidazole-based chained iodoargentates were solvothermally synthesized, and their photoluminescent behaviors at different temperatures were investigated. Of those, 3 has been found to possess photochromic luminescence properties.

Novel isomorphism of two hexagonal non-centrosymmetric hybrid crystals of M(en)3Ag2I4 (M = transition metal Mn2+ or main-group metal Mg2+; en = ethylenediamine)

For the first time, a main-group metal complex is used as a template for the formation of hybrid crystal structures and isomorphic hybrid crystals are obtained using transition and main-group metal complexes.

Iodoargentates from clusters to 1D chains and 2D layers induced by solvated lanthanide complex cations: syntheses, crystal structures, and photoluminescence properties

Lanthanide(iii) iodoargentates [Ln(DMSO)₈]₄Ag₂₂I₃₄·2H₂O (Ln = La (1), Ce (2)), [Ln(DMSO)₈]Ag₇I₁₀(Ln = Eu (3), Tb (4), Dy (5)), and [Yb(DMSO)₇]Ag₅I₈(6) were synthesized by a diffusion method.

Nonlinear Optical Materials for the Smart Filtering of Optical Radiation

The control of luminous radiation has extremely important implications for modern and future technologies as well as in medicine. In this Review, we detail chemical structures and their relevant photophysical features for various groups of materials, including organic dyes such as metalloporphyrins and metallophthalocyanines (and derivatives), other common organic materials, mixed metal complexes and clusters, fullerenes, dendrimeric nanocomposites, polymeric materials (organic and/or inorganic), inorganic semiconductors, and other nanoscopic materials, utilized or potentially useful for the realization of devices able to filter in a smart way an external radiation. The concept of smart is referred to the characteristic of those materials that are capable to filter the radiation in a dynamic way without the need of an ancillary system for the activation of the required transmission change. In particular, this Review gives emphasis to the nonlinear optical properties of photoactive materials for the function of optical power limiting. All known mechanisms of optical limiting have been analyzed and discussed for the different types of materials.

Syntheses, crystal structures and photocatalytic properties of four hybrid iodoargentates with zero- and two-dimensional structures

Four new hybrid iodoargentates have been solvothermally prepared and structurally characterized. The title compounds possess semiconductor characterizations and efficient photocatalytic activities under visible light irradiation.

A new nanocrystalline inorganic–organic hybrid exhibiting semiconducting properties and applications

A new nanocrystalline inorganic–organic hybrid semiconductor [(BV)₂(Ag₅Br₉)]_n (1) with an intriguing windmill-like 1-D [Ag₅Br₉]_nⁿ⁻ polymeric chain was assembled. Great efforts were devoted to investigate its semiconducting properties and applications.

A comparison study of aliphatic and aromatic structure directing agents influencing the crystal and electronic structures, and properties of iodoplumbate hybrids: water induced structure conversion and visible light photocatalytic properties

The introduction of the aliphatic amines en (ethylenediamine), aep (N-(2-aminoethyl)piperazine) and tepa (tetraethylenepentamine), and the aromatic species 2,2'-bipy (2,2'-bipyridine) and dpe (1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene) as structure directing agents (SDAs) into inorganic iodoplumbates affords six hybrids, namely [(Hen)4(H2.5O)2I](PbI6) (1), Cs2n[Pb3I8(en)2]n (2), (H3tepa)n(PbI5)n (3), (H2aep)n(PbI4)n (4), (Et22,2'-bipy)n(Pb2I6)n (5) and (Et2dpe)n(Pb2I6)n (6). 1 contains a discrete octahedral (PbI6)(4-) anion generated under the direction of a novel co-template, [(Hen)4(H2.5O)2I](4+). 2 contains inorganic Cs(+) ions and a novel hybrid anionic layer [Pb3I8(en)2]n(2n-) that has never been encountered in iodoplumbate hybrids. 3 features a zigzag (PbI5)(3-) chain with the charge being compensated by a triprotonated tepa cation. 4 is composed of perovskite sheets of lead(ii) octahedra and aep cations that are generated from tepa via an unprecedented in situ ligand reaction. Both 5 and 6 have (Pb2I6)n(2n-) chains and represent the first example of introducing a 2,2'-bipy or dpe derivative cation in iodoplumbate hybrids, respectively. The comparative study reveals that aliphatic amines and aromatic species contribute differently to the crystal and electronic structures, and the properties of the hybrids. Importantly, 1-4 exhibit interesting water induced structure conversions, while 5 and 6 can be used as heterogeneous photocatalysts for dye wastewater treatment under visible light irradiation.

Polymeric templates and solvent effects: syntheses and properties of polymeric iodoargentates containing solvated [Mn(4,4′-bpy)]2+cations

Novel iodoargentates [Mn(4,4′-bpy)(DMF)₃(H₂O)] Ag₅I₇·4,4′-bpy (1), [Mn(4,4′-bpy)(DMSO)₄]₂Ag₁₁I₁₅(2), [Mn(4,4′-bpy)₂(DMSO)₂(H₂O)₂]Ag₁₀I₁₂·2DMSO·2H₂O (3) and [Mn₂(4,4′-bpy)₂(DMF)₅(DMSO)₂(H₂O)]Ag₁₀I₁₄·2DMF (4) were prepared, templated by solvated [Mn(4,4′-bpy)]²⁺cations.

Silver(I) and Lead(II) Halide Compounds with 4-Methyl-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol

Four novel silver(i) and lead(ii) halide compounds with the 4-methyl-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol (Hmptrz) ligand, namely [Ag2(mptrz)(μ3-X)]n (X = I (1) and Br (2)) and [Pb4(μ4-O)(mptrz)4(μ2-X)2] (X = I (3) and Cl (4)), have been synthesized and characterized. The structures exhibit different dimensionality depending on the nature of the metal ions. Compounds 1 and 2 are isomorphous and have 2D layered structures based on inorganic [Ag2X2]n infinite chains (X = I and Br), in which the mptrz– ligand displays a novel pentadentate bridging coordination mode. Compounds 3 and 4 have similar structures and are composed of a discrete tetranuclear lead(ii) cluster featuring an oxygen-centred Pb4(µ4-O) tetrahedron. Compounds 1 and 2 display solid-state photoluminescent emission with the maximum at 589 and 420 nm respectively. Compounds 3 and 4 show solid-state photoluminescent emission with the maximum at 710 and 540 nm respectively. Additionally, compounds 1–4 were characterized by IR, elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis.
