Anisometric Ln(III) Complexes with Efficient Near-IR Luminescence

Recent studies in development of near-infrared luminophores focus on overcoming their disadvantages such as low quantum efficiency, limited emission power, and broad emission spectra. Rare earth (RE) elements are promising compounds in this respect as they offer a unique set of optical properties that provide narrow emission spectra and large Stokes shifts. This work reports the results of synthesis and characterization of new anisometric complexes of lanthanide(III) tris(b-diketonates) and 1,10-phenanthroline. These complexes possess light emitting-properties in the near-infrared range. Due to their structural features, these complexes allow production of homogeneous films by spin coating. These films are transparent in the visible and near-infrared ranges (transmission up to 99%). This paper demonstrates advantages of Yb(III), Er(III), and Nd(III) complexes as potential components of highly efficient light-transforming NIR coatings.

Effect of Magnetic and Electric Field on the Orientation of Rare-Earth-Containing Nematics

We report rare-earth-containing metallomesogens with newly synthesized ligands represented by the β-diketone 1-(4-(4-propylcyclohexyl)phenyl)octane-1,3-dione (CPDk_3-5) and the Lewis base 5,5'-bis(heptadecyl)-2,2'-bipyridine (bpy_17-17). The stoichiometry of the complexes is [Ln(CPDk_3-5)₃bpy_17-17], where Ln is a trivalent rare-earth ion (La, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Tm, and Yb). Although the ligands themselves do not form any mesophase, the respective metal complexes produce nematic and smectic A phases. The mesogenic rare-earth complexes were characterized by NMR, MS, POM, DSC, X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and dielectric spectroscopy. The metal complexes display a remarkably large magnetic anisotropy in the mesophase. These nematic liquid crystals can, therefore, be easily aligned by an external low-threshold magnetic field.

Nanofiber electrospinning in samarium complex-doped PMMA

Herein, an electrospinning process of samarium complex-doped PMMAs was carried out to fabricate ultrafine fibers with a uniform diameter of about 230 nm.

Tunable emissive lanthanidomesogen derived from a room-temperature liquid-crystalline Schiff-base ligand

A novel photoluminescent room-temperature liquid-crystalline salicylaldimine Schiff base with a short alkoxy substituent and a series of lanthanide(III) complexes of the type [Ln(LH)3(NO3)3] (Ln = La, Pr, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy; LH = (E)-5-(hexyloxy)-2-[{2-(2-hydroxyethylamino)ethylimino]methyl}phenol) have been synthesized and characterized by FTIR, (1)H and (13)C NMR, UV/Vis, and FAB-MS analyses. The ligand coordinates to the metal ions in its zwitterionic form. The thermal behavior of the compounds was investigated by polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The ligand exhibits an enantiotropic hexagonal columnar (Col(h)) mesophase at room temperature and the complexes show an enantiotropic lamellar columnar (Col(L)) phase at around 120 °C with high thermal stability. Based on XRD results, different space-filling models have been proposed for the ligand and complexes to account for the columnar mesomorphism. The ligand exhibits intense blue emission both in solution and in the condensed state. The most intense emissions were observed for the samarium and terbium complexes, with the samarium complex glowing with a bright-orange light (ca. 560-644 nm) and the terbium complex emitting green light (ca. 490-622 nm) upon UV irradiation. DFT calculations performed by using the DMol3 program at the BLYP/DNP level of theory revealed a nine-coordinate structure for the lanthanide complexes.
