Three metal–carboxylate frameworks have been synthesized in microwave-assisted solvo-thermal conditions and characterized. The different centre metal ions adopt different co-ligands from identical reactants to modify the secondary building units.

Synthesis, crystal structures and magnetic properties of a family of manganese phosphonate clusters with diverse structures

catena-Poly[[(1,10-phenanthroline)manganese(II)]-μ(3)-5-methyl-isophthalato]

In the title coupound, [Mn(C(9)H(6)O(4))(C(12)H(8)N(2))](n), the Mn(II) ion is coordinated by two N atoms [Mn-N = 2.273 (3) and 2.305 (2) Å] from a 1,10-phenanthroline ligand and four O atoms [Mn-O = 2.112 (2)-2.343 (3) Å] from three 5-methyl-isophthalate (mip) ligands in a distorted octa-hedral geometry. Each mip dianion acts as a tetra-dentate ligand connecting three Mn ions. The crystal packing exhibits π-π inter-actions [3.599 (2)-3.755 (2) Å] between the centroids of the six-membered rings of neighbouring 1,10-phenanthroline ligands.

catena-Poly[[(2,2'-bipyridine)copper(II)]-μ-5-tert-butyl-isophthalato]

In the crystal structure of the title polymeric compound, [Cu(C(12)H(12)O(4))(C(10)H(8)N(2))](n), the asymmetric unit consists of one Cu(II) ion, one 5-tert-butyl-isophthalate (tbip) and one 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) ligand. The copper(II) ion is four-coordin-ated by two N atoms from bipy and two O atoms from two tbip ligands, leading to a distorted tetrahedral coordination. Each tbip ligand adopts a bis-monodentate coordination mode to connect two symmetry-related copper(II) ions, so forming a zigzag polymer chain parallel to [001]. The tert-butyl methyl groups are disordered over two positions with occupancies of 0.506 (6)/0.494 (6).
