Abstract
We report the very first example of a self-assembled p-cymene-Ru(II) metallocycle based on a green emitting 4-amino-1,8-naphthalimide Tröger's base (TBNap) supramolecular scaffold. A new cleft-shaped TBNap-derived di-4-picolyl donor was synthesized and reacted in a 2 : 2 stoichiometry ratio with a dinuclear Ru(II) acceptor (Ru-A) to generate a [2 + 2] self-assembled metallocycle (TBNap-Ru-MC) in good yield. Both TBNap and TBNap-Ru-MC showed positive solvatochromism in different solvents with varying polarities. In addition, the binding propensity of cationic TBNap-Ru-MC toward the heparin polyanion was determined using fluorescence titration studies. The initial fluorescence emission of TBNap-Ru-MC was quenched upon the gradual addition of the heparin polyanion, and the Stern-Volmer quenching constant (KSV) was calculated to be 3.97 × 105 M-1.

Abstract
Neutral heteroleptic trinuclear coordination cages containing a preorganized well-defined small spherical endocavity, which is made up of electron-deficient bowl frameworks, three coordination-induced neutral polar C-H donors, and a phenyl motif, were self-assembled via a one-pot approach; the endocavity accommodates fluoride selectively in the presence of other halides.

Abstract
Three-dimensional molecular barrels Ru6-4 and Ru6-5 were synthesized in high yields from dinuclear ruthenium-vinyl clamps and tritopic triphenylamine-derived carboxylate linkers and characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy including 1H-1H COSY and 1H DOSY measurements, high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and X-ray crystallography. The metal frameworks of the cages adopt the shape of twisted trigonal prisms, and they crystallize as racemic mixtures of interdigitating Δ- and Λ-enantiomers with a tight columnar packing in Ru6-4. Electrochemical studies and redox titrations revealed that the cages are able to release up to 11 electrons on the voltammetric timescale and that their cage structures persist up to the hexacation level. IR and UV-vis-near-infrared spectroelectrochemical studies confirm substituent-dependent intramolecular electronic communication within the π-conjugated 1,3-divinylphenylene backbone in the tricationic states, where all three divinylphenylene-bridged diruthenium clamps are present in mixed-valent radical cation states. The formation of 1:3 charge-transfer salts with 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane as the electron acceptor is also demonstrated.

Abstract
A family of neutral, heteroleptic, dinuclear M2LL'-type pentagonal toroid-shaped metallomacrocycles (1-8) were synthesized using flexible ditopic N donors (Ln = L1-L2), rigid bis-chelating ligands (H2-L' = H2-E), and Re2(CO)10 in a one-pot solvothermal self-assembly approach. The ligands and the metallomacrocycles were characterized using ATR-IR, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance, ultraviolet-visible, and emission spectroscopy methods. The molecular structures of 1, 2, 4, 6, and 7 were confirmed by an X-ray diffraction study and are similar to those of calix[5]arene. The cyclic inner cavities of the metallomacrocycles accommodate toluene/mesitylene/acetone/chlorobenzene as guest molecules that are stabilized by cumulative C-H···π and π···π interactions with the cyclic framework of metallomacrocycle. The photophysical properties of the ligands and the metallomacrocycles were studied. The host-guest recognition properties of metallocavitands 1, 2, 7, and 8 as a model host with phenol and nitrobenzene derivatives as guest molecules were studied by emission spectroscopy methods.

Abstract
A new ditopic, quinoline-based ligand L (7-chloro-4-(pyridin-4-yl)quinoline) was synthesized via a Suzuki cross-coupling reaction. The ligand was utilized to synthesize the corresponding half-sandwich iridium(III) and ruthenium(II) binuclear complexes (1c and 1d) and the subsequent metallarectangles (2c, 2d, 3c, and 3d), via [2 + 2] coordination-driven self-assembly. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction confirmed the proposed molecular structure of the binuclear complex [{IrCl2(Cp*)}2(μ-L)] (1c) and DFT calculations were used to predict the optimized geometry of the rectangular nature of [{Ir(μ-Cl)(Cp*)}4(μ-L)2](CF3SO3)4 (2c). All of the metallarectangles were isolated as their triflate salts and characterized using various spectroscopic (1H, 13C{1H}, DOSY NMR, and IR spectroscopy) and analytical techniques (ESI-MS). The synthesized compounds were screened against the NF54 chloroquine-sensitive (CQS) and K1 chloroquine-resistant (CQR) strains of Plasmodium falciparum. Incorporation of the ubiquitous quinoline core and metal complexation significantly enhanced the in vitro biological activity, with an increase in the nuclearity correlating with an increase in the resultant antiplasmodial activity. This was observed across both parasitic strains, alluding to the potential of supramolecular metallarectangles to act as antiplasmodial agents. Inhibition of haemozoin formation was considered a potential mechanism of action and selected metallarectangles exhibit β-haematin inhibition activity with near comparable activity to chloroquine.

Abstract
Although the application of arene-osmium(II) complexes in homogeneous catalysis has been much less studied than that of their ruthenium analogues, different works have shown that, in some instances, a comparable or even superior effectiveness can be achieved with this particular class of compounds. This review article focuses on the catalytic applications of arene-osmium(II) complexes. Among others, transfer hydrogenation, hydrogenation, oxidation, and nitrile hydration reactions, as well as different C-C bond forming processes, are comprehensively discussed.

Abstract
The coordination-driven self-assembly methodology has emerged over the last few decades as an extraordinarily versatile synthetic tool for obtaining discrete macrocyclic or cage structures. Rational approaches using large libraries of ligands and metal complexes have allowed researchers to reach more and more sophisticated discrete structures such as interlocked, chiral, or heteroleptic cages, and some of them are designed for guest binding applications. Efforts have been notably produced in controlling host-guest affinity with, in particular, an evident interest in targeting substrate transportation and subsequent delivering. Recent accomplishments in this direction were described from functional cages which can be addressed with light, pH, or through a chemical exchange. The case of a redox-stimulation has been much less explored. In this case, the charge state of the redox-active cavity can be controlled through an applied electrical potential or introduction of an appropriate oxidizing/reducing chemical agent. Beyond possible applications in electrochemical sensing for environmental and medical sciences as well as for redox catalysis, controlling the cavity charge offers the possibility to modulate the host-guest binding affinity through electrostatic interactions, up to the point of disassembly of the host-guest complex, i.e., releasing of the guest molecule from the host cavity.This Account highlights the key studies that we carried out at Angers, related to discrete redox-active coordination-based architectures (i.e., metalla-rings, -cages, and -tweezers). These species are built upon metal-driven self-assembly between electron-rich ligands, based on the tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) moiety (as well as some of its S-rich derivatives), and various metal complexes. Given the high π-donating character of those ligands, the corresponding host structures exhibit a high electronic density on the cavity panels. This situation is favorable to bind complementary electron-poor guests, as it was illustrated with bis(pyrrolo)tetrathiafulvalene (BPTTF)-based cavities, which exhibit hosting properties for C60 or tetrafluorotetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ-F4). In addition to the pristine tetrathiafulvalene, which was successfully incorporated into palladium- or ruthenium-based architectures, the case of the so-called extended tetrathiafulvalene (exTTF) appears particularly fascinating. A series of related polycationic and neutral M4L2 ovoid containers, as well as a M6L3 cage, were synthesized, and their respective binding abilities for neutral and anionic guests were studied. Remarkably, such structures allow to control of the binding of the guest upon a redox-stimulation, through two distinctive processes: (i) cage disassembling or (ii) guest displacement. As an extension of this approach, metalla-assembled electron-rich tweezers were designed, which are able to trigger the guest release through an original process based on supramolecular dimerization activated through a redox stimulus. This ensemble of results illustrates the remarkable ability of electron-rich, coordination-based self-assembled cavities to bind various types of guests and, importantly, to trigger their release through a redox-stimulus.

Abstract
Three Pt4 L2 L'2 heteroleptic rectangles (1-3), containing ditopic redox-active bis-pyridine functionalized perylene bisimide (PBI) ligands PBI-pyr2 (L) are reported. Co-ligand L' is a dicarboxylate spacer of varying length, leading to modified overall size of the assemblies. 1 H NMR spectroscopy reveals a trend in the splitting and upfield chemical shift of the PBI-hydrogens in the rectangles with respect to free PBI, most pronounced with the largest strut length (3) and least with the smallest strut length (1). This is attributed to increased rotational freedom of the PBI-pyr2 ligand over its longitudinal axis (Npy -Npy ), due to increased distance between the PBI-surfaces, which is corroborated by VT-NMR measurements and DFT calculations. The intramolecular motion entails desymmetrization of the two PBI-ligands, in line with cyclic voltammetry (CV) data. The first (overall two-electron) reduction event and re-oxidation for 1 display a subtle peak-to-peak splitting of 60 mV, whilst increased splitting of this event is observed for 2 and 3. The binding of pyrene in 1 is probed to establish proof of concept of host-guest chemistry enabled by the two PBI-motifs. Fitting the binding curve obtained by 1 H NMR titration with a 1:1 complex formation model led to a binding constant of 964±55 m-1 . Pyrene binding is shown to directly influence the redox-chemistry of 1, resulting in a cathodic and anodic shift of approximately 46 mV on the first and second reduction event, respectively.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of two new 1,3,5-triazines containing 2-(aminomethyl)-1H-benzimidazole hydrochloride as a substituent are reported, namely, 2-{[(4,6-dichloro-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)amino]methyl}-1H-benzimidazol-3-ium chloride, C11H9Cl2N6
+·Cl− (1), and bis(2,2′-{[(6-chloro-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diyl)bis(azanediyl)]bis(methylene)}bis(1H-benzimidazol-3-ium)) tetrachloride heptahydrate, 2C19H18ClN9
2+·4Cl−·7H2O (2). Both salts were characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and IR spectroscopy. Moreover, the NMR (1H and 13C) spectra of 1 were obtained. Salts 1 and 2 have triclinic symmetry (space group P-1) and their supramolecular structures are stabilized by hydrogen bonding and offset π–π interactions. In hydrated salt 2, the noncovalent interactions yield pseudo-nanotubes filled with chloride anions and water molecules, which were modelled in the refinement with substitutional and positional disorder.

Abstract
A tetragold(I) rectangle-like metallocage containing two pyrene-bis-imidazolylidene ligands and two carbazolyl-bis-alkynyl linkers is used for the encapsulation of a series of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), including corannulene. The binding affinities obtained for the encapsulation of the planar PAHs guests in CD2 Cl2 are found to exponentially increase with the number of π-electrons of the guest (1.3 > logK >6.6). For the bowl-shaped molecule of corannulene, the association constant is much lower than the expected one according to its number of electrons. The molecular structure of the host-guest complex formed with corannulene shows that the molecule of the guest is compressed, while the host is expanded, thus showing an interesting case of artificial mutual induced-fit arrangement.

Abstract
Two chiral face-rotating metalla-assembled polyhedra were constructed upon self-assembling achiral components, i.e., a tritopic ligand based on a truxene core (10,15-dihydro-5H-diindeno[1,2-a;1′,2′-c]fluorene) and two different hydroxyquinonato–bridged diruthenium complexes. Both polyhedra were characterized in solution as well as in the solid state by X-ray crystallography. In both cases, the self-sorting process leading to only two homo-chiral enantiomers was governed by non-covalent interactions between both truxene units that faced each other.

Abstract
The preparation of the tethered arene-ruthenium(ii) complexes [RuCl2{η6:κ1(P)-C6H5(CH2)nOPR2}] (R = Ph, n = 1 (9a), 2 (9b), 3 (9c); R = iPr, n = 1 (10a), 2 (10b), 3 (10c)) from the corresponding phosphinite ligands R2PO(CH2)nPh (R = Ph, n = 1 (1a), 2 (1b), 3 (1c); R = iPr, n = 1 (2a), 2 (2b), 3 (2c)) is presented. Thus, in a first step, the treatment at room temperature of tetrahydrofuran solutions of dimers [{RuCl(μ-Cl)(η6-arene)}2] (arene = p-cymene (3), benzene (4)) with 1-2a-c led to the clean formation of the corresponding mononuclear derivatives [RuCl2(η6-p-cymene){R2PO(CH2)nPh}] (5-6a-c) and [RuCl2(η6-benzene){R2PO(CH2)nPh}] (7-8a-c), which were isolated in 66-99% yield. The subsequent heating of 1,2-dichloroethane solutions of these compounds at 120 °C allowed the exchange of the coordinated arene. The substitution process proceeded faster with the benzene derivatives 7-8a-c, from which complexes 9-10a-c were generated in 61-82% yield after 0.5-10 h of heating. The molecular structures of [RuCl2(η6-p-cymene){iPr2PO(CH2)3Ph}] (6c) and [RuCl2{η6:κ1(P)-C6H5(CH2)nOPiPr2}] (n = 1 (10a), 2 (10b), 3 (10c)) were unequivocally confirmed by X-ray diffraction methods. In addition, complexes [RuCl2{η6:κ1(P)-C6H5(CH2)nOPR2}] (9-10a-c) proved to be active catalysts for the dehydrogenative coupling of hydrosilanes and alcohols under mild conditions (r.t.). The best results were obtained with [RuCl2{η6:κ1(P)-C6H5(CH2)3OPiPr2}] (10c), which reached TOF and TON values up to 117 600 h-1 and 57 000, respectively.

Abstract
The quest for chemicals able to operate at selected genomic loci in a spatiotemporally controlled manner is desirable to create manageable DNA damages. Mounting evidence now shows that alternative DNA structures, including G-quadruplexes and branched DNA (or DNA junctions), might hamper proper progression of replication fork, thus triggering DNA damages and genomic instability. Therefore, small molecules that stabilize these DNA structures are currently scrutinized as a promising way to create genomic defects that cannot be dealt with properly by cancer cells. While much emphasis has been recently given to G-quadruplexes and related ligands, we report herein on three-way DNA junctions (TWJ) and related ligands. We first highlight the biological implications of TWJ and their strategic relevance as triggers for replicative stress. Then, we describe a new in vitro high-throughput screening assay, TWJ-Screen, which allows for identifying TWJ ligands with both high affinity and selectivity for TWJ over other DNA structures (duplexes and quadruplexes), in a convenient and unbiased manner as demonstrated by the screening of a library of 25 compounds from different chemical families. TWJ-Screen thus represents a reliable mean to uncover molecular tools able to foster replicative stress through an innovative approach, thus providing new strategic opportunities to combat cancers.

Abstract
Coordination-driven self-assembly is an effective synthetic tool for the construction of spatially and electronically tunable supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs), which are useful in various applications. Herein, we report the synthesis of a two-dimensional discrete metalla-rectangle [(η6-p-cymene)4Ru4(C6H2O4)2(2)2](CF3SO3)4 (3) by the reaction of a dinuclear half-sandwich ruthenium (II) complex [Ru2(η6-p-cymene)2(C6H2O4)Cl2] (1) and bis-pyridyl amide linker (2) in the presence of AgO3SCF3. This cationic ruthenium metalla-rectangle (3) has been isolated as its triflate salt and characterized by analytical techniques including elemental analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR), carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (13C-NMR), 1H-1H correlation spectroscopy (COSY), 1H-1H nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (NOESY), diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY), and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS). Significantly, the 2D cationic ruthenium metalla-rectangle showed better anticancer activity towards three different cell lines (A549, Caki-1 and Lovo) as compared with the parent ruthenium complex (1) and the commercially used drug, cisplatin.

Abstract
Four new flexible ditopic nitrogen donors possessing a xylene spacer and 2-phenylbenzimidazolyl or its derivatives as a coordinating unit and one rigid bis-chelating ligand consisting of two 2-hydroxyphenylbenzimidazolyl motifs and a central phenylene spacer were synthesized and further used with Re2(CO)10 for making a new family of neutral, heteroleptic tetrahedral-shaped supramolecular coordination complexes via a one-pot approach. The new ligands and the complexes were characterized using various analytical and spectroscopic methods. The molecular structures of the complexes were determined using single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, which reveal that four rhenium cores are arranged in the vertices, and four ligands are at the edges of the tetrahedron.

Abstract
For nearly 15 years, the biological and biomedical applications of arene ruthenium metalla-assemblies have flourished. Today, the synthetic strategies to generate arene ruthenium assemblies are well-established, and these compounds offer tremendous possibilities in terms of structural diversities and chemical properties. However, the second coordination sphere is often poorly considered, if not ignored, when designing such arene ruthenium metalla-assemblies. These weak interactions (hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic, ionic, electrostatic, van der Waals, π-π stacking) that take place in the solid state or in solution are generally key interactions for the foreseen applications. Therefore, in this review, we want to emphasize this important property of arene ruthenium metalla-assemblies by showing examples dealing with second coordination sphere interactions and how this can be better integrated in the design of these versatile supramolecular metal-based entities.

Abstract
Coordination-driven self-assembly of organometallic η6-arene ruthenium(ii) supramolecular architectures (MA1-MA4) was carried out by employing dinuclear ruthenium acceptors [Ru2(μ-η4-C2O4)(CH3OH)2(η6-p-cymene)2](CF3SO3)2 (Rua), [Ru2(μ-η4-C6H2O4)(CH3OH)2(η6-p-cymene)2](CF3SO3)2 (Rub), [Ru2(dhnq)(H2O)2(η6-p-cymene)2](CF3SO3)2 (Ruc) and [Ru2(dhtq)(H2O)2(η6-p-cymene)2](CF3SO3)2 (Rud) separately with a new tetratopic donor (TD) in methanol at room temperature [TD = N,N,N',N'-tetra(pyridin-4-yl)-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-diamine]. All the coordination architectures were characterized by using spectroscopic techniques. The potency of these self-assembled architectures against human cervical cancer HeLa and human lung adenocarcinoma A549 cell lines is explored in vitro using MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide), annexin V-FITC/PI and 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein-diacetate assays.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of three metalla-rectangles of the general formula [Ru4(η6-p-cymene)4(μ4-clip)2(μ2-Lanthr)2][CF3SO3]4 (Lanthr: 9,10-bis(3,3’-ethynylpyridyl) anthracene; clip = oxa: oxalato; dobq: 2,5-dioxido-1,4-benzoquinonato; donq: 5,8-dioxido-1,4-naphthoquinonato) are presented. The molecular structure of the metalla-rectangle [Ru4(η6-p-cymene)4(μ4-oxa)2(μ2-Lanthr)2]4+ has been confirmed by the single-crystal X-ray structure analysis of [Ru4(η6-p-cymene)4(μ4-oxa)2(μ2-Lanthr)2][CF3SO3]4 · 4 acetone (A2 · 4 acetone), thus showing the anthracene moieties to be available for reaction with oxygen. While the formation of the endoperoxide form of Lanthr was observed in solution upon white light irradiation, the same reaction does not occur when Lanthr is part of the metalla-assemblies.

Abstract
Di- and trinuclear organotin(IV) complexes, in which the metal atoms are separated by large aromatic connectors, are useful building blocks for self-assembly. This is demonstrated by the preparation of [1+1], [2+2], and [2+3] macrocyclic and cage-type structures in combination with organic aromatic dicarboxylates. The linkage of the metal atoms by organic binders and the option of varying the number of reactive M-X sites generate versatile building blocks enabling molecular tectonics instead of the node-based strategy generally employed in metallo-supramolecular self-assembly.

Abstract
Neutral ditopic flexible N-donor ligands (Ln = bis(4-(naphtho[2,3-d]imidazol-1-ylmethyl)phenyl)methane, L1 bis(4-(benzimidazol-1-ylmethyl)phenyl)methane, L2 or bis(4-(2-nonylbenzimidazol-1-ylmethyl)phenyl)methane, L3) possessing a bis(4-methylphenyl)methane spacer with two imidazolyl donor units were designed and synthesized. The ligands were utilized to develop metallacavitands analogous to irregular pentagonal-shaped metallacavitands with larger cavities. The metallacavitands 1-4 were assembled from Re2(CO)10, a rigid bis-chelating donor (1,4-dihydroxy-9,10-anthraquinone or chloranilic acid) and Lnvia a solvothermal approach. The ligands and the metallacavitands were characterized by analytical and spectroscopic methods. The molecular structures of 1 and 4 were further confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis which revealed that a toluene molecule resides in the hydrophobic cavity. Ln and 1-4 are emissive in DMSO at room temperature. The internal cavity of the metallacavitand acts as a host for aromatic guest molecules. The host-guest interaction properties of 1 with anthracene, naphthalene, nitrobenzene, 2-nitrotoluene, 4-nitrotoluene and 2,4-dinitrotoluene were studied by an emission spectroscopic method.

Abstract
The reaction of cis-blocked, square-planar MII complexes with tetratopic N-donor ligands is known to give metallasupramolecular assemblies of the formula M2nLn. These assemblies typically adopt barrel-like structures, with the ligands paneling the sides of the barrels. However, alternative structures are possible, as demonstrated by the recent discovery of a Pt8L4 cage with unusual gyrobifastigium-like geometry. To date, the factors that govern the assembly of MII2nLn complexes are not well understood. Herein, we provide a geometric analysis of M2nLn complexes, and we discuss how size and geometry of the ligand is expected to influence the self-assembly process. The theoretical analysis is complemented by experimental studies using different cis-blocked PtII complexes and metalloligands with four divergent pyridyl groups. Mononuclear metalloligands gave mainly assemblies of type Pt8L4, which adopt barrel- or gyrobifastigium-like structures. Larger assemblies can also form, as evidenced by the crystallographic characterization of a Pt10L5 complex and a Pt16L8 complex. The former adopts a pentagonal barrel structure, whereas the latter displays a barrel structure with a distorted square orthobicupola geometry. The Pt16L8 complex has a molecular weight of more than 23 kDa and a diameter of 4.5 nm, making it the largest, structurally characterized M2nLn complex described to date. A dinuclear metalloligand was employed for the targeted synthesis of pentagonal Pt10L5 barrels, which are formed in nearly quantitative yields.

Abstract
Thanks to their synthetic versatility, the half-sandwich metal chlorides MCl(dppe)(η5-C5R5) [M = Fe, Ru; dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane, R = H (cyclopentadiene, Cp), CH3 (pentamethylcyclopentadiene, Cp*)] are staple starting materials in many organometallic laboratories. Here we present an overview of the synthetic methods currently available for FeCl(dppe)Cp*, FeCl(dppe)Cp, RuCl(dppe)Cp*, and RuCl(dppe)Cp, and describe in detail updated and optimised multigram syntheses of all four compounds.

Abstract
Three new cobalt-ruthenium heterometallic molecular rectangles, 1-3, were synthesized through the coordination-driven self-assembly of a new cobalt sandwich donor, (η5 -Cp)Co[C4 -trans-Ph2 (4-Py)2 ] (L; Cp: cyclopentyl; Py: pyridine), and one of three dinuclear precursors, [(p-cymene)2 Ru2 (OO∩OO)2 Cl2 ] [OO∩OO: oxalato (A1 ), 5,8-dioxido-1,4-naphthoquinone (A2 ), or 6,11-dioxido-5,12-naphthacenedione (A3 )]. All of the self-assembled architectures were isolated in very good yield (92-94 %) and were fully characterized by spectroscopic analysis; the molecular structures of 2 and 3 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The anticancer activities of bimetallic rectangles 1-3 were evaluated with a 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, an autophagy assay, and Western blotting. Rectangles 1-3 showed higher cytotoxicity than doxorubicin in AGS human gastric carcinoma cells. In addition, the autophagic activities and apoptotic cell death ratios were increased in AGS cells by treatment with 1-3; the rectangles induced autophagosome formation by promoting LC3-I to LC3-II conversion and apoptotic cell death by increasing caspase-3/7 activity. Our results suggest that rectangles 1-3 induce gastric cancer cell death by modulating autophagy and apoptosis and that they have potential use as agents for the treatment of human gastric cancer.

Abstract
Metallamacrocylic tetraruthenium complexes were generated by treatment of 1,4-divinylphenylene-bridged diruthenium complexes with functionalized 1,3-benzene dicarboxylic acids and characterized by HR ESI-MS and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy. Every divinylphenylene diruthenium subunit is oxidized in two consecutive one-electron steps with half-wave potential splittings in the range of 250 to 330 mV. Additional, smaller redox-splittings between the +/2+ and 0/+ and the 3+/4+ and 2+/3+ redox processes, corresponding to the first and the second oxidations of every divinylphenylene diruthenium entity, are due to electrostatic effects. The lack of electronic coupling through bond or through space is explained by the nodal properties of the relevant molecular orbitals and the lateral side-by-side arrangement of the divinylphenylene linkers. The polyelectrochromic behavior of the divinylphenylene diruthenium precursors is retained and even amplified in these metallamacrocyclic structures. EPR studies down to T=4 K indicate that the dications 1-H(2+) and 1-OBu(2+) are paramagnetic. The dications and the tetracation of macrocycle 3-H display intense (dications) or weak (3-H(4+) ) EPR signals. Quantum chemical calculations indicate that the four most stable conformers of the macrocycles are largely devoid of strain. Bond parameters, energies as well as charge and spin density distributions of model macrocycle 5-H(Me) were calculated for the different charge and spin states.
