Abstract
Luminescent molecule-based bioimaging system is widely used for precise localization and distinction of cancer/tumor cells. Luminescent lanthanide (Ln(III)) complexes offer long-lived (sub-millisecond time scale) and sharp (FWHM <10 nm) emission, arising from the forbidden 4f-4f electronic transitions. Luminescent Ln(III) complex-based bioimaging has emerged as a promising option for both in vitro and in vivo visualizations. In this mini-review, the historical development and recent significant progress of luminescent Ln(III) probes for bioapplications are introduced. The recent studies are mainly focused on three points: (i) the structural modifications of Ln(III) complexes in both macrocyclic and small ligands, (ii) the acquirement of high resolution luminescence images of cancer/tumor cells and (iii) the constructions of ratiometric biosensors. Furthermore, our recent study is explained as a new Cancer GPS (cancer grade probing for determining tumor grade through photophysical property analyses of intracellular Eu(III) complex.

Abstract
We present the implementation of quadratic response theory based upon the relativistic equation-of-motion coupled cluster method. We showcase our implementation, whose generality allows us to consider both time-dependent and time-independent electric and magnetic perturbations, by considering the static and frequency-dependent hyperpolarizability of hydrogen halides (HX, X = F-At), providing comprehensive insights into their electronic response characteristics. Additionally, we evaluated the Verdet constant for noble gases Xe and Rn and discussed the relative importance of relativistic and electron correlation effects for these magneto-optical properties. Finally, we calculate the two-photon absorption cross sections of transition [ns1S0 → (n + 1)s1S0] of Ga+ and In+, which are suggested as candidates for new ion clocks. As our implementation allows for the use of nonrelativistic Hamiltonians as well, we have compared our EOM-QRCC results to the QR-CC implementation in the DALTON code and show that the differences between CC and EOMCC response are in general smaller than 5% for the properties considered. Collectively, the results underscore the versatility of our implementation and its potential as a benchmark tool for other approximated models, such as density functional theory for higher-order properties.

Abstract
Previously limited to highly symmetrical homoleptic triple-helical complexes [Er(Lk)3 ]3+ , where Lk are polyaromatic tridentate ligands, single-center molecular-based upconversion using linear optics and exploiting the excited-state absorption mechanism (ESA) greatly benefits from the design of stable and low-symmetrical [LkEr(hfa)3 ] heteroleptic adducts (hfa- =hexafluoroacetylacetonate anion). Depending on (i) the extended π-electron delocalization, (ii) the flexibility and (iii) the heavy atom effect brought by the bound ligand Lk, the near-infrared (801 nm) to visible green (542 nm) upconversion quantum yield measured for [LkEr(hfa)3 ] in solution at room temperature can be boosted by up to three orders of magnitude.

Abstract
By introducing enantiomerically pure mono-bidentate N-donor ligands (LR/LS) into Yb(btfa)3(H2O)2 and Yb(dbm)3(H2O), respectively, two pairs of chiral YbIII enantiomers, namely Yb(btfa)3LR/Yb(btfa)3LS (D-1/L-1) and [Yb(dbm)3LR]·[Yb(dbm)3(C2H5OH)]/[Yb(dbm)3LS]·[Yb(dbm)3(C2H5OH)] (D-2/L-2) were isolated, where btfa- = 3-benzoyl-1,1,1-trifluoroacetonate, dbm- = dibenzoylmethanate, and LR/LS = (-)/(+)-4,5-pinenepyridyl-2-pyrazine. D-1/L-1 possess mononuclear structures in which the YbIII ions are eight-coordinated, while D-2/L-2 show cocrystal structures containing Yb(dbm)3(LR/LS) and Yb(dbm)3(C2H5OH) moieties in which the two YbIII ions are eight and seven-coordinated, respectively. They not only feature different molecular structures but also present distinct linear and nonlinear optical performances. Chiral mononuclear D-1 has better near infrared photo-luminescence (NIR-PL) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) performances than chiral cocrystal D-2. More remarkably, D-1/L-1 show large second-harmonic generation (SHG) responses (up to 1.25/1.28 × KDP) 18/16 times those of D-2/L-2 (0.07/0.08 × KDP). In addition, D-2/L-2 represent the first examples of lanthanide cocrystal complexes with NIR-PL, NIR-CPL and SHG properties.

Abstract
In the past, Lanthanide Luminescent Bioprobes (LLBs) based on pyclen-bearing π-extended picolinate antennas were synthesized and demonstrated well-adapted optical properties for biphotonic microscopy. The objective of this work is to develop a strategy to design bifunctional analogues of the previously studied LLBs presenting an additional reactive chemical group to allow their coupling to biological vectors to reach deep in vivo targeted two-photon bioimaging. Herein, we elaborated a synthetic scheme allowing the introduction of a primary amine on the para position of the macrocyclic pyridine unit. The photophysical and bioimaging studies demonstrate that the introduction of the reactive function does not alter the luminescent properties of the LLBs paving the way for further applications.

Abstract
In this perspective, we provide an overview of the recent achievements in luminescent lanthanide-based molecular cluster-aggregates (MCAs) and illustrate why MCAs can be seen as the next generation of highly efficient optical materials. MCAs are high nuclearity compounds composed of rigid multinuclear metal cores encapsulated by organic ligands. The combination of high nuclearity and molecular structure makes MCAs an ideal class of compounds that can unify the properties of traditional nanoparticles and small molecules. By bridging the gap between both domains, MCAs intrinsically retain unique features with tremendous impacts on their optical properties. Although homometallic luminescent MCAs have been extensively studied since the late 1990s, it was only recently that heterometallic luminescent MCAs were pioneered as tunable luminescent materials. These heterometallic systems have shown tremendous impacts in areas such as anti-counterfeiting materials, luminescent thermometry, and molecular upconversion, thus representing a new generation of lanthanide-based optical materials.

Abstract
Functionalized perfluoroalkyl lithium β-diketonates (LiL) react with lanthanide(III) salts (Ln = Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy) in methanol to give heterobimetallic Ln-Li complexes of general formula [(LnL3)(LiL)(MeOH)]. The length of fluoroalkyl substituent in ligand was found to affect the crystal packing of complexes. Photoluminescent and magnetic properties of heterobimetallic β-diketonates in the solid state are reported. The effect of the geometry of the [LnO8] coordination environment of heterometallic β-diketonates on the luminescent properties (quantum yields, phosphorescence lifetimes for Eu, Tb, Dy complexes) and single-ion magnet behavior (Ueff for Dy complexes) is revealed.

Abstract
Whereas dye-sensitized lanthanide-doped nanoparticles represent an unquestionable advance for pushing linear near-infrared (NIR) to visible-light upconversion within the frame of applications, analogous improvements are difficult to mimic for related but intramolecular processes induced at the molecular level in coordination complexes. Major difficulties arise from the cationic nature of the target cyanine-containing sensitizers (S), which drastically limits their thermodynamic affinities for catching the lanthanide activators (A) required for performing linear light upconversion. In this context, the rare previous design of stable dye-containing molecular SA light-upconverters required large S···A distances at the cost of the operation of only poorly efficient intramolecular S → A energy transfers and global sensitization. With the synthesis of the compact ligand [L2]+, we exploit here the benefit of using a single sulfur connector between the dye and the binding unit for counterbalancing the drastic electrostatic penalty which is expected to prevent metal complexation. Quantitative amounts of nine-coordinate [L2Er(hfac)3]+ molecular adducts could be finally prepared in solution at millimolar concentrations, while the S···A distance has been reduced by 40% to reach circa 0.7 nm. Detailed photophysical studies demonstrate the operation of a three times improved energy transfer upconversion (ETU) mechanism for molecular [L2Er(hfac)3]+ in acetonitrile at room temperature, thanks to the boosted heavy atom effect operating in the close cyanine/Er pair. NIR excitation at 801 nm can thus be upconverted into visible light (525-545 nm) with an unprecedented brightness of Bup(801 nm) = 2.0(1) × 10-3 M-1·cm-1 for a molecular lanthanide complex.

Abstract
Substitution of the diglyme ligand of [Eu(hfa)3(diglyme)] (where hfa is hexafluoroacetylacetonate) with a simple 1,10-phenanthroline leads to a six-fold increase of the product μβEFISH, as measured by the Electric-Field-Induced Second Harmonic generation (EFISH) technique. Similarly, [Eu(tta)3(1,10-phenanthroline)] (where Htta is 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone) is characterized by a large second-order NLO response. Both 1,10-phenanthroline europium complexes have great potential as multifunctional materials for photonics.

Abstract
EuIII and YbIII complexes with the carbazole-dipicolinato ligand dpaCbz2-, namely K3[Eu(dpaCbz)3] and K3[Yb(dpaCbz)3], were isolated. The EuIII complex displayed metal-centred emission upon one-photon excitation with a sensitized emission efficiency Φ L Ln of 1.8±0.3 %, corresponding to an intrinsic emission efficiency Φ Ln Ln of 46% and a sensitization efficiency of ηsens 3.9%, with an emission lifetime of the emissive state τ of 1.087±0.005 ms. The YbIII complex displayed Φ L Ln of 0.010±0.001 %, and a τ of 2.32±0.06 μs. The EuIII-centred emission was sensitized as well upon two-photon excitation and a two-photon absorption cross-section σ2PA of 63 GM at 750 nm was determined for the complex. The one- or two-photon sensitized emission intensity of the EuIII complex changes by more than two-fold when the solvent viscosity is varied in the range 0.5 - 200 cP and the emission is independent of dissolved oxygen. The YbIII complex displays a change in emission intensity as well. However, in this case, a dependence of the emission intensity on dissolved oxygen content was observed.

Abstract
The piling up of low-energy photons to produce light beams of higher energies while exploiting the nonlinear optical response of matter was conceived theoretically around 1930 and demonstrated 30 years later with the help of the first coherent ruby lasers. The vanishingly small efficacy of the associated light-upconversion process was rapidly overcome by the implementation of powerful successive absorptions of two photons using linear optics in materials that possess real intermediate excited states working as relays. In these systems, the key point requires a favorable competition between the rate constant of the excited-state absorption (ESA) and the relaxation rate of the intermediate excited state, the lifetime of which should be thus maximized. Chemists and physicists therefore selected long-lived intermediate excited states found (i) in trivalent lanthanide cations doped into ionic solids or into nanoparticles (2S+1LJ spectroscopic levels) or (ii) in polyaromatic molecules (triplet states) as the logical activators for designing light upconverters using linear optics. Their global efficiency has been stepwise optimized during the past five decades by using indirect intermolecular sensitization mechanisms (energy transfer upconversion = ETU) combined with large absorption cross sections. The induction of light-upconversion operating in a single discrete entity at the molecular level is limited to metal-based units and remained a challenge for a long time because coordination complexes possess high-frequency oscillators incompatible with the existence of (i) scales of accessible excited relays with long lifetimes and (ii) final high-energy emissive levels with noticeable intrinsic quantum yields. In contrast to intermolecular energy transfer processes operating in metal-based doped solids, which require statistical models, the combination of sensitizers and activators within the same molecule limits energy transfers to easily tunable intramolecular processes with first-order kinetic rate constants. Their successful programming in a trinuclear CrErCr complex in 2011 led to the first detectable near-infrared to green light upconversion induced in a molecular unit under reasonable excitation intensity. The subsequent progress in the modeling and understanding of the key factors controlling metal-based light upconversion operating in molecular complexes led to a burst of various designs exploiting different mechanisms, excited-state absorption (ESA), energy transfer upconversion (ETU), cooperative luminescence (CL), and cooperative upconversion (CU), which are discussed in this Account.

Abstract
While the low-absorption cross section of lanthanide-based upconversion systems, in which the trivalent lanthanides (Ln3+) are responsible for converting low- to high-energy photons, has restricted their application to intense incident light, the emergence of a cascade sensitization through an organic dye antenna capable of broadly harvesting near-infrared (NIR) light in upconversion nanoparticles opened new horizons in the field. With the aim of pushing molecular upconversion within the range of practical applications, we show herein how the incorporation of an NIR organic dye antenna into the ligand scaffold of a mononuclear erbium coordination complex boosts the upconversion brightness of the molecule to such an extent that a low-power (0.7 W·cm-2) NIR laser excitation of [L6Er(hfa)3]+ (hfa = hexafluoroacetylacetonate) at 801 nm results in a measurable visible upconverted signal in a dilute solution (5 × 10-4 M) at room temperature. Connecting the NIR dye antenna to the Er3+ activator in a single discrete molecule cures the inherent low-efficient metal-based excited-state absorption mechanism with a powerful indirect sensitization via an energy transfer upconversion, which drastically improves the molecular-based upconverted Er3+-centered visible emission.

Abstract
Near Infrared (NIR) imaging agents are extensively used in the biological or preclinical treatment and diagnosis of a wide range of diseases including cancers and tumors. The current arsenal of NIR compounds are most constituted by organic dyes, polymers, inorganic nanomaterials, whereas Ln molecular complexes explore an alternative approach to design NIR probes that are potentially bring new molecular toolkits into the biomedicine. In this review, NIR imaging agents are categorized according to their molecular sizes, constitution and the key properties and features of each class of compounds are briefly defined wherever possible. To better elucidate the features of Ln complexes, we provide a succinct understanding of sensitization process and molecular Ln luminescence at a mechanistic level, which may help to deliver new insights to design NIR imaging probes. Finally, we used our work on NIR ytterbium (Yb3+) probes as an example to raise awareness of exploring biologically relevant chemical space for lanthanide complexes as chemical entities for biological activity.

Abstract
In addition to the already described ligand L4a, two pyclen-based lanthanide chelators, L4b and L4c, bearing two specific picolinate two-photon antennas (tailor-made for each targeted metal) and one acetate arm arranged in a dissymmetrical manner, have been synthesized, to form a complete family of lanthanide luminescent bioprobes: [EuL4a], [SmL4a], [YbL4b], [TbL4c], and [DyL4c]. Additionally, the symmetrically arranged regioisomer L4a' was also synthesized as well as its [EuL4a'] complex to highlight the astonishing positive impact of the dissymmetrical N-distribution of the functional chelating arms. The investigation clearly shows the high performance of each bioprobe, which, depending on the complexed lanthanide, could be used in various applications. Each presents high brightness, quantum yields, and lifetimes. Staining of the complexes into living human breast cancer cells was observed. In addition, in vivo two-photon microscopy was performed for the first time on a living zebrafish model with [EuL4a]. No apparent toxicity was detected on the growth of the zebrafish, and images of high quality were obtained.

Abstract
The use of luminescence in biological systems allows one to diagnose diseases and understand cellular processes. Molecular systems, particularly lanthanide(III) complexes, have emerged as an attractive system for application in cellular luminescence imaging due to their long emission lifetimes, high brightness, possibility of controlling the spectroscopic properties at the molecular level, and tailoring of the ligand structure that adds sensing and therapeutic capabilities. This review aims to provide a background in luminescence imaging and lanthanide spectroscopy and discuss selected examples from the recent literature on lanthanide(III) luminescent complexes in cellular luminescence imaging, published in the period 2016-2020. Finally, the challenges and future directions that are pointing for the development of compounds that are capable of executing multiple functions and the use of light in regions where tissues and cells have low absorption will be discussed.

Abstract
The newly synthesized EuIII and YbIII complexes with the new carbazole-based ligands CPAD2- and CPAP4- display the characteristic long-lived metal-centered emission upon one- and two-photon excitation. The EuIII complexes show the expected narrow emission bands in the red region, with emission lifetimes between 0.382 and 1.464 ms and quantum yields between 2.7% and 35.8%, while the YbIII complexes show the expected emission in the NIR region, with emission lifetimes between 0.52 and 37.86 μs and quantum yields between 0.028% and 1.12%. Two-photon absorption cross sections (σ2PA) as high as 857 GM were measured for the two ligands. The complexes showed a strong dependence of the one- and two-photon sensitized emission intensity on solvent viscosity in the range of 0.5-200 cP in the visible and NIR region.

Abstract
Single-center light upconversion corresponds to the piling up of low-energy photons via successive linear absorptions: a phenomenon commonly observed in lanthanide-doped low-phonon ionic solids or nanoparticles. Its ultimate miniaturization in molecular complexes opens challenging perspectives in terms of improved reproducibility, chemical control and optical programming. However, high-energy vibrations inherent in coordination complexes severely limit the efficiency of successive excited-state absorptions (ESAs) responsible for the gain in photon energy. By carefully wrapping three polyaromatic ligand strands around trivalent erbium, we managed to induce low-power room temperature near-infrared (λ exc = 801 nm or 966 nm) to visible green (λ em = 522 nm and 545 nm) light upconversion within mononuclear coordination complexes [Er(Lk )3]3+ operating either in the solid state or in non-deuterated solution. The calculated upconversion quantum yields set the zero-level of an elemental erbium-centered molecular ESA mechanism, a value which favorably compares with cooperative upconversion (CU) previously implemented in sophisticated multisite Yb2Tb supramolecular assemblies. The various dependences of the upconverted emission on the incident excitation power imply different mechanisms, which can be tuned by molecular design.

Abstract
A family of europium (III) complexes based on a polydentate ligand functionalized by charge-transfer antennae presents remarkable one- and two-photon photophysical proper-ties in water or buffer. A detailed analysis of their emission properties suggests that the wrapping of the ligand around the central rare-earth ion results in an overall Cs symmetry in agreement with the theoretical simulation and that about 65-70 % of the emission intensity is concentrated in the hypersensitive 5 D0 →7 F2 transition at 615 nm. Their brightness is excellent, in the range of the best lanthanide bioprobes making them very attractive for bio-imaging experiments.

Abstract
In order to prepare efficient luminescent organic–inorganic hybrid materials embedded with a lanthanide (Ln3+) complex with polycarboxylate ligands, Ln3+-doped di-ureasils with 4,4-oxybis(benzoic acid) and 1,10-phenanthroline ligands were synthesized via an in-situ sol–gel route. The resulting hybrids were structurally, thermally, and optically characterized. The energy levels of the ligands and the host-to-ion and ligand-to-ion energy transfer mechanisms were investigated (including DFT/TD–DFT calculations). The results show that these Ln3+-based di-ureasil hybrids exhibit promising luminescent features, e.g., Eu3+-based materials are bright red emitters displaying quantum yields up to 0.50 ± 0.05. The luminescent color can be fine-tuned either by selection of adequate Ln3+ ions or by variation of the excitation wavelength. Accordingly, white light emission with CIE coordinates of (0.33, 0.35) under 310 nm irradiation was obtained.

Abstract
An Yb(iii) complex based on a dimethyl cyclen macrocyclic ligand functionalized by charge transfer antennae was prepared. This cationic [YbL3]+ complex is stable and soluble in water and presents interesting photophysical nonlinear properties. It is spontaneously internalized and accumulates in live cells. High quality images have been obtained both in a classical NIR-to-vis configuration and in the more challenging NIR-to-NIR one.

Abstract
Luminescent lanthanide (Ln(III)) complexes with coumarin or carbostyril antennae were synthesized and their photophysical properties evaluated using steady-state and time-resolved UV-vis spectroscopy. Ligands bearing distant hydroxycoumarin-derived antennae attached through triazole linkers were modest sensitizers for Eu(III) and Tb(III), whereas ligands with 7-amidocarbostyrils directly linked to the coordination site could reach good quantum yields for multiple Ln(III), including the visible emitters Sm(III) and Dy(III), and the near-infrared emitters Nd(III) and Yb(III). The highest lanthanide-centered luminescence quantum yields were 35% (Tb), 7.9% (Eu), 0.67% (Dy), and 0.18% (Sm). Antennae providing similar luminescence intensities with 2-4 Ln-emitters were identified. Photoredox quenching of the carbostyril antenna excited states was observed for all Eu(III)-complexes and should be sensitizing in the case of Yb(III); the scope of the process extends to Ln(III) for which it has not been seen previously, specifically Dy(III) and Sm(III). The proposed process is supported by photophysical and electrochemical data. A FRET-type mechanism was identified in architectures with both distant and close antennae for all of the Lns. This mechanism seems to be the only sensitizing one at long distance and probably contributes to the sensitization at shorter distances along with the triplet pathway. The complexes were nontoxic to either bacterial or mammalian cells. Complexes of an ester-functionalized ligand were taken up by bacteria in a concentration-dependent manner. Our results suggest that the effects of FRET and photoredox quenching should be taken into consideration when designing luminescent Ln complexes. These results also establish these Ln(III)-complexes for multiplex detection beyond the available two-color systems.

Abstract
Three new dipolar cations have been synthesised, containing ferrocenyl (Fc) electron donor groups attached to helquat (Hq) acceptors. These organometallic Hq derivatives have been characterised as their TfO- salts by using various techniques including NMR and electronic absorption spectroscopies and electrochemical measurements. UV-vis spectra show multiple intense low energy absorptions attributable to intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) excitations. Each compound displays a reversible Fc+/0 redox process, together with two reversible one-electron reductions of the Hq fragment. Molecular quadratic nonlinear optical (NLO) responses have been determined by using hyper-Rayleigh scattering at 1064 nm, and Stark (electroabsorption) spectroscopic studies on the visible absorption bands. The obtained first hyperpolarizabilities β are moderate, consistent with the relatively short π-conjugation lengths between the Fc and attached pyridinium group. A single-crystal X-ray structure has been solved for one of the complexes as its PF6- salt, revealing a centrosymmetric packing in the triclinic space group P1[combining macron]. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations indicate that the lowest energy absorption bands have mainly metal-to-ligand charge-transfer character. The donor orbitals involved in the electronic transitions forming the next lowest energy ICT band also have substantial contributions from the Fe atom. Good agreement between the simulated and experimental UV-vis absorption spectra is achieved by using the PBE0 functional with the 6-311++G(d)/LANL2DZ mixed basis set, and the theoretical β values are reasonably large. Oxidation of the Fc unit is predicted to cause the βtot value to decrease by more than 80% in one of the complexes.

Abstract
Up conversion is an Anti-Stokes luminescent process by which photons of low energy are piled up to generate light at a higher energy. Here we show that the addition of fluoride anions to a D2O solution of a macrocyclic erbium complex leads to the formation of a supramolecular [(ErL)2F]+ assembly in which fluoride is sandwiched between two complexes, held together by the synergistic interactions of the Er-F-Er bridging bond, four intercomplex hydrogen bonds and two aromatic stacking interactions. Room temperature excitation into the Er absorption bands at 980 nm of a solution of the complex in D2O results in the observation of up converted emission at 525, 550 and 650 nm attributed to Er centred transitions via a two-step excitation. The up conversion signal is dramatically increased upon formation of the [(ErL)2F]+ dimer in the presence of 0.5 equivalents of fluoride anions. Up conversion is an Anti-Stokes luminescent process by which photons of low energy are piled up to generate light at a higher energy. Here, the authors report a supramolecular assembly of fluoride-bridged erbium complexes which exhibit this behaviour in D2O solution at room temperature.

Abstract
Considered at the beginning of the 21th century as being incompatible with the presence of closely bound high-energy oscillators, lanthanide-centered superexcitation, which is the raising of an already excited electron to an even higher level by excited-state energy absorption, is therefore a very active topic strictly limited to the statistical doping of low-phonon bulk solids and nanoparticles. We show here that molecular lanthanide-containing coordination complexes may be judiciously tuned to overcome these limitations and to induce near-infrared (NIR)-to-visible (VIS)-light upconversion via the successive absorption of two low-energy photons using linear-optical responses. Whereas single-ion-centered excited-state absorption mechanisms remain difficult to implement in lanthanide complexes, the skillful design of intramolecular intermetallic energy-transfer processes operating in multimetallic architectures is at the origin of the recent programming of erbium-centered molecular upconversion.

Abstract
This work shows that the operation of near-infrared to visible light-upconversion in a discrete molecule is not limited to non-linear optical processes, but may result from superexcitation processes using linear optics. The design of nine-coordinate metallic sites made up of neutral N-heterocyclic donor atoms in kinetically inert dinuclear [GaEr(L1)(3)](6+) and trinuclear [GaErGa(L2)(3)](9+) helicates leads to [ErN(9)] chromophores displaying unprecedented dual visible nanosecond Er((4)S(3/2)→(4)I15/2) and near-infrared microsecond Er((4)I(13/2)→(4)I1(5/2)) emissive components. Attempts to induce one ion excited-state absorption (ESA) upconversion upon near-infrared excitation of these complexes failed because of the too-faint Er-centred absorption cross sections. The replacement of the trivalent gallium cation with a photophysically-tailored pseudo-octahedral [CrN(6)] chromophore working as a sensitizer for trivalent erbium in [CrEr(L1)(3)](6+) improves the near-infrared excitation efficiency, leading to the observation of a weak energy transfer upconversion (ETU). The connection of a second sensitizer in [CrErCr(L2)(3)](9+) generates a novel mechanism for upconversion, in which the superexcitation process is based on the Cr(III)-sensitizers. Two successive Cr→Er energy transfer processes (concerted-ETU) compete with a standard Er-centred ETU, and a gain in upconverted luminescence by a factor larger than statistical values is predicted and observed.
