Abstract
In this study, density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory are used to determine how the size of π-conjugated system influences the absorption spectra and non-linear optical (NLO) properties of dyes. Double and triple bonds, as well the benzene rings, are used in conjugated systems. The results of the theoretical computation show that the absorption spectra are gradually broadened and red-shifted with increases in the conjugation length. Theoretical examination of the NLO properties was performed on the key parameters of polarizability and hyperpolarizability. A notable increase in the non-linear optical response was observed with an increase in the conjugation length of the π-spacer.

Abstract
The switchable second-order nonlinear optical properties of a series of dithienylethene-containing boron compounds possessing reversible photochromic behavior have been systemically investigated based on density functional theory. The significant differences on the static first hyperpolarizabilities caused by the photoisomerization reaction confirm the switchable nonlinear optical behavior. Results show that the closed-ring 1c–4c possess large static first hyperpolarizabilitieswith respect to their corresponding open-ring 1o–4o, which is due to the better π-conjugation and a more obvious degree of charge transfer. Specifically, the static first hyperpolarizability values increase in the range of 2.4–5.2 times with the strengthening electron-withdrawing ability of the substituent R (R = H, CF3, NO2) on the pyridine and elongating the conjugated chains. It indicates that introducing boron-based functional groups to the dithienylethene monomer and modifying the pyridine ring can effectively improve the switching nonlinear optical responses.

Abstract
In this research article, we reported solvent effects on non-linear optical (NLO) properties of 5,5′-disubstituted-2,2′-bipyridine complexes of ruthenium. The polarizability (α) and hyperpolarizability (β) were calculated in the gas phase. Benzene (ϵ (dielectric constant) = 2.3), THF (ϵ = 7.52), dichloromethane (ϵ = 8.93), acetone (ϵ = 21.01), methanol (ϵ = 33.00), and water (ϵ = 80.10) were used by density functional theory. These solvents cover a wide range of polarities. The results of theoretical investigation showed that the non-linear optical properties were significantly increased with the increase in solvent polarity. The results of this study also showed that similarly to structural modifications, polarity of the medium may play a significant role in modulating the NLO properties.

Abstract
In this research paper, we have reported solvent effects on nonlinear optical properties of tetrammineruthenium(II) complexes of modified 1,10-phenanthrolines. Polarizability and hyperpolarizability were calculated in the gas phase, benzene (ε = 2.3), THF (ε = 7.52), dichloromethane (ε = 8.93), acetone (ε = 21.01), methanol (ε = 33.00), acetonitrile (ε = 36.64), and water (ε = 80.10) using density functional theory. These solvents cover a wide range of polarities. The results of theoretical investigation have shown that nonlinear optical properties significantly increased with the increase of solvent polarity. Solvent strongly affected hyperpolarizability as compared with polarizability. Nonlinear optical properties were also changed by the change of functional. Hyperpolarizability significantly changed with the change of functional as compared with polarizability. The results of this study indicate that like structural modification, polarity of the medium can significantly change the nonlinear optical properties.

Abstract
In the thematic review dedicated to polyoxometalate (POM) chemistry published in Chemical Reviews in 1998, no contribution was devoted to theory. This is not surprising because computational modelling of molecular metal-oxide clusters was in its infancy at that time. Nowadays, the situation has completely changed and modern computational methods have been successfully applied to study the structure, electronic properties, spectroscopy and reactivity of POM clusters. Indeed, the progress achieved during the past decade has been spectacular and herein we critically review the most important papers to provide the reader with an almost complete perspective of the field.

Abstract
Polyoxometalates (POMs) have remarkable properties and a great deal of potential to meet contemporary societal demands regarding health, environment, energy and information technologies. However, implementation of POMs in various functional architectures, devices or materials requires a processing step. Most developments have considered the exchange of POM counterions in an electrostatically driven approach: immobilization of POMs on electrodes and other surfaces including oxides, embedding in polymers, incorporation into Layer-by-Layer assemblies or Langmuir-Blodgett films and hierarchical self-assembly of surfactant-encapsulated POMs have thus been thoroughly investigated. Meanwhile, the field of organic-inorganic POM hybrids has expanded and offers the opportunity to explore the covalent approach for the organization or immobilization of POMs. In this critical review, we focus on the use of POM hybrids in selected fields of applications such as catalysis, energy conversion and molecular nanosciences and we endeavor to discuss the impact of the covalent approach compared to the electrostatic one. The synthesis of organic-inorganic POM hybrids starting from bare POMs, that is the direct functionalization of POMs, is well documented and reliable and efficient synthetic procedures are available. However, as the complexity of the targeted functional system increases a multi-step strategy relying on the post-functionalization of preformed hybrid POM platforms could prove more appealing. In the second part of this review, we thus survey the synthetic methodologies of post-functionalization of POMs and critically discuss the opportunities it offers compared to direct functionalization.
