Abstract
Solvothermal treatment of 1-naphthylmethylamine with potassium hydride (KH) or n-butyllithium (n-BuLi)-potassium t-butoxide (t-BuOK) in THF induces unusual two consecutive β-hydride eliminations to form 1-naphthonitrile and KH. The freshly generated KH is hydridic enough to undergo dearomative hydride addition to the resultant 1-naphthonitrile regioselectively at the C4 position to afford α-cyano benzylic carbanion, which could be functionalized by a series of electrophiles, liberating the corresponding 1,4-dihydronaphthalene-1-carbonitriles having a quaternary carbon center.

Abstract
In spite of the highly ionic character of most lithium-element bonds, the bonding within Li2X2 rings presents similarities with that found in analogous transition metal systems. They obey simple framework electron counting rules that allow us to predict whether they will form a regular ring or a squeezed one with short Li-Li or X-X distances. A combined computational and structural database analysis discloses the orbital conditions that determine the framework electron counting rules. These systems probe the borderline between the covalent and ionic bonding models since, paradoxically, a non-negligible covalent contribution of the two Li atoms (formally Li+ ions in the ionic model) to the Li-X framework bonding favors them approaching each other within bonding distance.

Ultrafast amidation of esters using lithium amides under aerobic ambient temperature conditions in sustainable solvents. Chem Sci 2020; 11:6500-6509. Abstract
Using 2-methyl THF as solvent enables efficient and ultrafast amidation of esters by lithium amides at room temperature in air, edging closer towards reaching air- and moisture-compatible polar organometallic chemistry.
Lithium amides constitute one of the most commonly used classes of reagents in synthetic chemistry. However, despite having many applications, their use is handicapped by the requirement of low temperatures, in order to control their reactivity, as well as the need for dry organic solvents and protective inert atmosphere protocols to prevent their fast decomposition. Advancing the development of air- and moisture-compatible polar organometallic chemistry, the chemoselective and ultrafast amidation of esters mediated by lithium amides is reported. Establishing a novel sustainable access to carboxamides, this has been accomplished via direct C–O bond cleavage of a range of esters using glycerol or 2-MeTHF as a solvent, in air. High yields and good selectivity are observed while operating at ambient temperature, without the need for transition-metal mediation, and the protocol extends to transamidation processes. Pre-coordination of the organic substrate to the reactive lithium amide as a key step in the amidation processes has been assessed, enabling the structural elucidation of the coordination adduct [{Li(NPh2)(O

]]>
CPh(NMe2))}2] (8) when toluene is employed as a solvent. No evidence for formation of a complex of this type has been found when using donor THF as a solvent. Structural and spectroscopic insights into the constitution of selected lithium amides in 2-MeTHF are provided that support the involvement of small kinetically activated aggregates that can react rapidly with the organic substrates, favouring the C–O bond cleavage/C–N bond formation processes over competing hydrolysis/degradation of the lithium amides by moisture or air.

Abstract
Rubidium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide (rubidium hexamethyldisilazanide, Rb(hmds)) is accessible on a large scale with excellent yields via a magnetite-catalyzed metalation of hexamethyldisilazane (H(hmds)) in liquid ammonia. Recrystallization of solvent-free alkali metal hexamethyldisilazanides [A(hmds)]n of sodium to cesium from solutions containing 2,2,5,5-tetramethyltetrahydrofuran (Me4THF, thf*) yields the dinuclear complexes [(thf*)A(hmds)]2, which show a rather asymmetric coordination behavior of the bulky ether ligand with strongly bent A-A-O moieties for the heavier K, Rb, and Cs congeners, whereas in the Na complex, the ether ligand is clamped between the trimethylsilyl groups. In hydrocarbon solutions, dissociation of these compounds is observed leading to the liberation of this bulky and weakly binding cyclic ether.

Abstract
Transmetallation of lithiodihydropyridines with Group 1 alkoxides provides facile access to reactive MH (M = Na, K) sources, which show significant structural diversity due in part to the distinct ways that Na/K engage with the σ (green) and π (red) donor systems of the DHP ligands.
