Computational Screening of Putative Catalyst Transition Metal Complexes as Guests in a Ga4L612- Nanocage

Metal-organic cages form well-defined microenvironments that can enhance the catalytic proficiency of encapsulated transition metal complexes (TMCs). We introduce a screening protocol to efficiently identify TMCs that are promising candidates for encapsulation in the Ga4L612- nanocage. We obtain TMCs from the Cambridge Structural Database with geometric and electronic characteristics amenable to encapsulation and mine the text of associated manuscripts to curate TMCs with documented catalytic functionality. By docking candidate TMCs inside the nanocage cavity and carrying out electronic structure calculations, we identify a subset of successfully optimized candidates (TMC-34) and observe that encapsulated guests occupy an average of 60% of the cavity volume, in line with previous observations. Notably, some guests occupy as much as 72% of the cavity as a result of linker rotation. Encapsulation has a universal effect on the electrostatic potential (ESP), systematically decreasing the ESP at the metal center of each TMC in the TMC-34 data set, while minimally altering TMC metal partial charges. Collectively these observations support geometry-based screening of potential guests and suggest that encapsulation in Ga4L612- cages could electrostatically stabilize diverse cationic or electropositive intermediates. We highlight candidate guests with associated known reactivity and solubility most amenable for encapsulation in experimental follow-up studies.

Three-Electron Two-Centered Bond and Single-Electron Transfer Mechanism of Water Splitting via a Copper-Bipyridine Complex

We report the atomistic and electronic details of the mechanistic pathway of the oxygen-oxygen bond formation catalyzed by a copper-2,2'-bipyridine complex. Density functional theory-based molecular dynamics simulations and enhanced sampling methods were employed for this study. The thermodynamics and electronic structure of the oxygen-oxygen bond formation are presented in this study by considering the cis-bishydroxo, [Cu^III(bpy)(OH)₂]⁺, and cis-(hydroxo)oxo, [Cu^IV(bpy)(OH)(═O)]⁺, complexes as active catalysts. In the cis-bishydroxo complex, the hydroxide transfer requires a higher kinetic barrier than the proton transfer process. In the case of [Cu^IV(bpy)(OH)(═O)]⁺, the proton transfer requires a higher free energy than the hydroxide one. The peroxide bond formation is thermodynamically favorable for the [Cu^IV(bpy)(OH)(═O)]⁺ complex compared with the other. The hydroxide ion is transferred to one of the Cu-OH moieties, and the proton is transferred to the solvent. The free energy barrier for this migration is higher than that for the former transfer. From the analysis of molecular orbitals, it is found that the electron density is primarily present on the water molecules near the active sites in the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) state and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the ligands. Natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis reveals the electron transfer process during the oxygen-oxygen bond formation. The σ*Cu(d_xz)-O(p) orbitals are involved in the oxygen-oxygen bond formation. During the bond formation, three-electron two-centered (3e^--2C) bonds are observed in [Cu^III(bpy)(OH)₂]⁺ during the transfer of the hydroxide before the formation of the oxygen-oxygen bond.

Catalytic Hydrogenation of a Manganese(V) Nitride to Ammonia

The catalytic hydrogenation of a metal nitride to produce free ammonia using a rhodium hydride catalyst that promotes H₂ activation and hydrogen-atom transfer is described. The phenylimine-substituted rhodium complex (η⁵-C₅Me₅)Rh(^MePhI)H (^MePhI = N-methyl-1-phenylethan-1-imine) exhibited higher thermal stability compared to the previously reported (η⁵-C₅Me₅)Rh(ppy)H (ppy = 2-phenylpyridine). DFT calculations established that the two rhodium complexes have comparable Rh-H bond dissociation free energies of 51.8 kcal mol^-1 for (η⁵-C₅Me₅)Rh(^MePhI)H and 51.1 kcal mol^-1 for (η⁵-C₅Me₅)Rh(ppy)H. In the presence of 10 mol% of the phenylimine rhodium precatalyst and 4 atm of H₂ in THF, the manganese nitride (^tBuSalen)Mn≡N underwent hydrogenation to liberate free ammonia with up to 6 total turnovers of NH₃ or 18 turnovers of H^• transfer. The phenylpyridine analogue proved inactive for ammonia synthesis under identical conditions owing to competing deleterious hydride transfer chemistry. Subsequent studies showed that the use of a non-polar solvent such as benzene suppressed formation of the cationic rhodium product resulting from the hydride transfer and enabled catalytic ammonia synthesis by proton-coupled electron transfer.

Dehydrohalogenation of proton responsive complexes: versatile aggregation via pyrazolate pincer ligand arms

The behavior of the complex (H₂L)CoCl₂, where H₂L is a bis-(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine, towards Brønsted bases is studied, to evaluate peripheral NH deprotonation as a route to a dianionic pincer ligand on a d⁷ center.

Mapping-Out Catalytic Processes in a Metal-Organic Framework with Single-Crystal X-ray Crystallography

Single-crystal X-ray crystallography is employed to characterize the reaction species of a full catalytic carbonylation cycle within a Mn^II -based metal-organic framework (MOF) material. The structural insights explain why the Rh metalated MOF is catalytically competent toward the carbonylation of MeBr but only affords stoichiometric turn-over in the case of MeI. This work highlights the capability of MOFs to act as platform materials for studying single-site catalysis in heterogeneous systems.

Capturing snapshots of post-synthetic metallation chemistry in metal-organic frameworks

Post-synthetic metallation is employed strategically to imbue metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with enhanced performance characteristics. However, obtaining precise structural information for metal-centred reactions that take place within the pores of these materials has remained an elusive goal, because of issues with high symmetry in certain MOFs, lower initial crystallinity for some chemically robust MOFs, and the reduction in crystallinity that can result from carrying out post-synthetic reactions on parent crystals. Here, we report a new three-dimensional MOF possessing pore cavities that are lined with vacant di-pyrazole groups poised for post-synthetic metallation. These metallations occur quantitatively without appreciable loss of crystallinity, thereby enabling examination of the products by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. To illustrate the potential of this platform to garner fundamental insight into metal-catalysed reactions in porous solids we use single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies to structurally elucidate the reaction products of consecutive oxidative addition and methyl migration steps that occur within the pores of the Rh-metallated MOF, 1·[Rh(CO)2][Rh(CO)2Cl2].
