Synthesis, Structural Studies, and Catalytic Application of Palladium Complexes Containing Anilido-Oxazolinate Ligands

Pd-catalysed C-H functionalisation of free carboxylic acids

Pd-catalysed C-H functionalisation of free carboxylic acids has drawn significant attention over the last few years due to the predominance of carboxylic acid moieties in pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. But their coordinating ability was overlooked and masked by exogenous directing groups for a long time. Even other crucial roles of carboxylic acids as additives and steric inducers that directly influence the mode of a reaction have been widely neglected. This review aims to embrace all of the diverse aspects of carboxylic acids except additive and steric effects by concisely and systematically describing their versatile role in Pd-catalysed proximal and distal C-H activation reactions that could be implemented in the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries. In addition, the mechanistic perspectives along with several recent strategies developed in the last few years discussed here will serve as educational resources for future research.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Catalytic Application of Palladium Complexes Containing Indolyl-NNN-Type Ligands

In this study, a series of N-heterocyclic indolyl ligand precursors 2-Py-Py-IndH, 2-Py-Pz-IndH, 2-Py-7-Py-IndH, 2-Py-7-Pz-IndH, and 2-Ox-7-Py-IndH (L¹H-L⁵H) were prepared. The treatment of ligand precursors with 1 equivalent of palladium acetate affords palladium complexes 1-5. All ligand precursors and palladium complexes were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The molecular structures of complexes 3 and 5 were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. The application of those palladium complexes 1-5 to the Suzuki reaction with aryl halide substrates was examined.

Synthesis and crystal structures of tetra-meric [2-(4,4-dimethyl-2-oxazolin-2-yl)anilido]sodium and tris-[2-(4,4-dimethyl-2-oxazolin-2-yl)anilido]ytterbium(III)

Reaction of 2-(4,4-dimethyl-2-oxazolin-2-yl)aniline (H2-L1) with one equivalent of Na[N(SiMe3)2] in toluene afforded pale-yellow crystals of tetra-meric poly[bis-[μ3-2-(4,4-dimethyl-2-oxazolin-2-yl)anilinido][μ2-2-(4,4-dimethyl-2-oxa-zolin-2-yl)aniline]tetra-sodium(I)], [Na4(C11H13N2O)4] n or [Na4(H-L1)4] n (2), in excellent yield. Subsequent reaction of [Na4(H-L1)4] n (2) with 1.33 equivalents of anhydrous YbCl3 in a 50:50 mixture of toluene-THF afforded yellow crystals of tris-[2-(4,4-dimethyl-2-oxazolin-2-yl)anilinido]ytterbium(III), [Yb(C11H13N2O)3] or Yb(H-L1)3 (3) in moderate yield. Direct reaction of three equivalents of 2-(4',4'-dimethyl-2'-oxazolin-yl)aniline (H2-L1) with Yb[N(SiMe3)2]3 in toluene resulted in elimination of hexa-methyl-disilazane, HN(SiMe3)2, and produced Yb(H-L1)3 (3) in excellent yield. The structure of 2 consists of tetra-meric Na4(H-L1)4 subunits in which each Na+ cation is bound to two H-L1 bridging bidentate ligands and these subunits are connected into a polymeric chain by two of the four oxazoline O atoms bridging to Na+ cations in the adjacent tetra-mer. This results in two 4-coordinate and two 5-coordinate Na+ cations within each tetra-meric unit. The structure of 3 consists of a distorted octa-hedron where the bite angle of ligand L1 ranges between 74.72 (11) and 77.79 (11) degrees. The oxazoline (and anilide) N atoms occupy meridional sites such that for one ligand an anilide nitro-gen is trans to an oxazoline nitro-gen while for the other two oxazoline N atoms are trans to each other. This results in a significantly longer Yb-N(oxazoline) distance [2.468 (3) Å] for the bond trans to the anilide compared to those for the oxazoline N atoms trans to one another [2.376 (3), 2.390 (3) Å].

Anilido-oxazoline-ligated rare-earth metal complexes: synthesis, characterization and highly cis-1,4-selective polymerization of isoprene

Anilido-oxazoline-ligated rare-earth metal dialkyl complexes have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The complexes exhibited strong fluorescence emissions and good catalytic performance on isoprene polymerization with high cis-1,4-selectivity. The treatment of anilido-oxazoline precursors ortho-C6H4[NH(2,6-R12C6H3)][C[double bond, length as m-dash]NC(R2,R3)CH2O] (R1 = R2 = R3 = Me (HL1); R1 = iPr, R2 = R3 = Me (HL2); R1 = R2 = iPr, R3 = H (HL3); and R1 = iPr, R2 = R3 = H (HL4)) with an equimolar amount of Ln(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)2 (Ln = Sc, Y) afforded rare-earth metal complexes L1-4-Ln(CH2SiMe3)2(THF)n (L1-Sc (1), n = 1; L2-Sc (2), n = 0; L1-Y (3), n = 1; L2-Y (4), n = 1; L3-Y (5), n = 1; and L4-Y (6), n = 1) in good yields. The complexes are stable in both the solid state and solution. Single crystal X-ray diffraction study showed that complexes 1, 3 and 4 exhibit a distorted trigonal bipyramidal configuration, while complex 2 is pseudo-tetrahedral without coordinated THF. The luminescence properties of complexes 1-4 were investigated and the emission maxima were found in the range of 465-477 nm. DFT and TD-DFT studies were carried out to explore their characteristic electronic structures and gain insight into their optical properties. Upon activation with organic borates, the reported complexes exhibited high activity and cis-1,4-selectivity for isoprene polymerization. The nature of the central metal and substituent groups in oxazoline have an influence on the cis-1,4-selectivity.
