Simple Tuning of the Optoelectronic Properties of IrIII and PtII Electrophosphors Based on Linkage Isomer Formation with a Naphthylthiazolyl Moiety

Pt-S Bond-Enabled Temperature-Dependent Phosphorescence in S-Heteroaryl Tetradentate Pt(S^C^N^O) Complexes

This study presents the rare examples of S-heteroaryl tetradentate Pt(S^C^N^O) luminescent complexes (PtSZ and PtSZtBu) containing a Pt-S bond. The presence of the Pt-S bond allows the novel Pt(S^C^N^O) complexes to exhibit temperature-dependent phosphorescent emission behavior. The PtSZtBu exhibits dual-emission phenomena and biexponential transient decay spectra above 250 K, indicating the presence of two minimal excited states in the potential energy surface (PES) of the T1 state. Through complementary experimental and computational studies, we have identified changes in orbital composition between Pt(dxy)-S(px) and Pt(dyz)-S(pz) in excited states with increasing temperature. This results in two energy minima, enabling the excited states to decay selectively and radiatively at different temperatures. Consequently, this leads to remarkable steady-state and transient emission spectra changes. Our work not only provides valuable insights for the development of novel Pt-S bond-based tetradentate Pt(II) complexes but also enhances our understanding of the distinctive properties governed by the Pt-S bond.

Tailoring the π-system of benzimidazole ligands towards stable light-harvesting cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes

The synthesis, structure, optical and redox properties as well as photovoltaic studies of iridium(III) complexes with cyclometalated 2-arylbenzimidazoles decorated with various polyaromatic fragments and an ancillary aromatic β-diketone are reported. Despite the strong preference of the iridium(III) ion to form bis- or tris-cyclometalated complexes in which the metal participates in five-membered metallacycles, the cyclometalation of the benzimidazole ligands containing rigid π-extended systems yields dimeric complexes containing strained five- or six-membered metallacycles and allows for generating an extremely rare monocyclometalated complex. X-ray crystallography shows that the steric strain observed in the dimers is retained in heteroleptic diketonate complexes which is also corroborated by gas-phase DFT calculations. While emission maxima and redox potentials of the heteroleptic complexes exhibit just a moderate variation upon the change of the cyclometalated ligands, the extension of the π-system of the benzimidazole ligands give the complexes remarkable light absorption in the visible spectral range, which meets the requirements for application in dye-sensitized solar cells. At the titania photoanodes, these iridium dyes retain their optical properties and exhibit power conversion efficiencies under standard AM 1.5 G conditions comparable to those of other iridium-based sensitizers. These results demonstrate that the size and position of the π-extended fragment in cyclometalated ligands can modulate not only the electronic structure of the corresponding iridium(III) complexes, but also affect their composition, structure and reactivity that may find implications in future design of emerging iridium dyes, emitters and catalysts.

Unsymmetric Heteroleptic Ir(III) Complexes with 2-Phenylquinoline and Coumarin-Based Ligand Isomers for Tuning Character of Triplet Excited States and Achieving High Electroluminescent Efficiencies

2-Phenylquinoline (PQ) and four coumarin-based ligand isomers with ease of synthesis have been selected to construct the unsymmetric heteroleptic [Ir(C₁^∧N)(C₂^∧N)(acac)]-type complex phosphors for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Six unsymmetric heteroleptic Ir(III) complexes have been obtained by employing four coumarin-based ligand isomers (L-C5/L-C6/L-C7/L-C8) in the [Ir(PQ)(C^∧N)(acac)] structure due to two different coordinating carbon atoms in ligands L-C6 and L-C7 to form C-Ir bond. Through adopting unsymmetric heteroleptic [Ir(C₁^∧N)(C₂^∧N)(acac)] structure, these Ir(III) complexes can not only achieve impressive absolute quantum yield Φ_p (ca. 0.5-1.0), higher than that of complex [Ir(PQ)₂(acac)] (ca. 0.4), but also realize a dual modulation of both emission color from orange (AIrC6out, λ = 578 nm) to red (AIrC5, λ = 622 nm) and the character of the lowest triplet excited states (T₁), showing both ³MLCT character and ³ILCT (intraligand charge transfer) character in their T₁ states. AIrC5, AIrC7out, and AIrC7in show MLCT character from Ir(III) center to ligand L-C5 or L-C7 and ILCT character in ligand L-C5 or L-C7 in their T₁ states, while AIrC6out, AIrC6in, and AIrC8 show MLCT character from Ir(III) center to ligand PQ and ILCT character in ligand PQ in their T₁ states. Moreover, the color-tuning mechanism and the lowest triplet state characters are investigated in detail. AIrC6in and AIrC8 were selected as emitters to evaluate the electroluminescent (EL) performance due to their high Φ_P of nearly up to unity. Optimal orange-emitting device B2 based on AIrC8 can give a maximum external quantum efficiency (η_ext) of 23.9%, a maximum current efficiency (η_L) of 70.9 cd A^-1, and a maximum power efficiency (η_P) of 60.7 lm W^-1. All these impressive results can definitely demonstrate the effectiveness of our simple approach for tuning character of the triplet excited states and achieving high-performance Ir-based phosphors in OLEDs.

Rational Design of Axially Chiral Platinabinaphthalenes with Aggregation-Induced Emission for Red Circularly Polarized Phosphorescent Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) materials have received a lot of interest due to their potential applications in next-generation displays. However, the development of easily accessible red circularly polarized phosphorescent emitters for practical organic light-emitting diodes fabrication remains a grand challenge. In this paper, we report a new family of CPL-active platinum complexes based on the binaphthalene chiral platform. These axially chiral platinabinaphthalenes were facile synthesized by directly incorporating platinum(II) into the π-conjugated backbone of a commercially available enantiopure binaphthalene derivate. These complexes exhibit aggregation-induced circularly polarized phosphorescence enhancement with high quantum yields of up to 66% and luminescence dissymmetry factors of around 2.6 × 10^-3. Moreover, solution-processable circularly polarized organic light-emitting diodes (CPOLEDs) using these complexes as emitters show good performance with the maximum luminance of up to 3500 cd m^-2 and dissymmetry factor values of around 1.0 × 10^-3. These findings by the rational design of axially chiral platinabinaphthalenes are important for the development of high-performance CPL complexes for CPOLEDs.

Coordination mode-induced isomeric cyclometalated [Ir(tpy)(nbi)Cl](PF6) complexes: distinct luminescence, self-assembly and cellular imaging behaviors

Two isomeric Ir(iii) complexes Ir-O and Ir-R arising from the different coordination mode of a naphthalene-containing ligand, show distinct luminescence, self-assembly ability and cellular imaging behaviors.

Synthesis and characterization of novel cross-linking light-emitting polyfluorene derivatives

Polyfluorene derivative with amine side groups, namely, P1 was synthesized by the palladium-catalyzed coupling reaction of 2,5-dibromoaniline with 2,7-bis(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl)-9,9′-dioctylfluorene. Cross-linked polyazomethine P1-TPD (cross-linked polymer, P1/ terephthalic aldehyde) was obtained by the reaction of P1 with terephthalic aldehyde. Given that replacement of the phenylene ring by a thiophene ring can improve π-electron delocalization, we also synthesized P1-TPCD (cross-linked polymer, P1/ 2,5-thiophenedicarboxaldehyde) whose cross-linking bridge was a thiophene ring. The ultraviolet–visible spectra of P1-TPD showed that there was a little hypsochromic shift to its pristine polymer P1, however, the maximum emission wavelength was changed to the second peak in the photoluminescence spectra. Besides, the band gap energy ( Eg) of P1-TPD was a little narrower than that of P1. The maximum absorption wavelength and the maximum emission wavelength of P1-TPCD was almost the same with P1, but its Eg was narrower than P1 and P1-TPD. Most notably, azomethine-linked P1-TPD and P1-TPCD were fluorescent with measured fluorescent quantum yields of 22% and 44%.

Cationic, luminescent cyclometalated iridium(iii) complexes based on substituted 2-phenylthiazole ligands

Enlarging the π system of phosphorescent (C^C*) cyclometalated platinum(II) NHC complexes

Cyclometalated (C^C*) platinum(II) N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes are emerging as a new class of phosphorescent emitters for the application in organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs). We present the synthesis of six new complexes of this class to investigate the influence of extended π systems. Therefore, six different NHC ligands with a varying number of additional phenyl substituents were used in combination with the monoanionic acetylacetonate (acac) ligand to obtain complexes of the general formula [(NHC)Pt(II)(acac)]. The complexes were fully characterized by standard techniques and advanced spectroscopic methods ((195)Pt NMR). For all complexes the solid-state structure determination revealed a square-planar coordination of the platinum atom. Absorption and emission spectra were measured in thin amorphous poly(methyl methacrylate) films at room temperature. Four compounds emit in the blue-green region of the visible spectrum with quantum yields of up to 81%.
