Abstract
There have been few reports on the substituent effect of main-group-element corrole complexes as ligand-centered homogeneous electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The key to comprehend the catalytic mechanism and develop efficient catalysts is the elucidation of the effects of electronic structure on the performance of energy-related small molecules. In this work, the "push-pull" electronic effect of the substituents on electrocatalytic HER of phosphorus corroles was investigated by using 5,10,15-tris(phenyl) corrole phosphorus (1P), 10-pentafluorophenyl-5,15-bis(phenyl) corrole phosphorus (2P), 10-phenyl-5,15-bis(pentafluorophenyl) corrole phosphorus (3P), 5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl) corrole phosphorus (4P) complexes bearing hydroxyl axial ligands and different numbers of fluorine atoms on the meso-aryl substituents. The results revealed that the catalytic HER activity of phosphorus corroles decreased with the increasing of fluorine atom numbers, it follows in the order 1P>2P>3P>4P. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the corrole 1P has the lowest free energy barrier in catalytic HER.

Abstract
The economical consideration of using an electrocatalyst in energy-related field, composed of non-precious/sustainable elements is quite noteworthy. In this work, the phosphorus(V) complex of tris-(pentafluorophenyl)corrole [(TPFC)PV (OH)2 ] was reported as electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The electrochemical studies revealed that the HER experienced a ECEC pathway (E: electron transfer step, C: chemical step), and the possible intermediate [PV ]-H species was suggested. (TPFC)PV (OH)2 displayed excellent HER activity in dimethylformamide (DMF) with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) as the proton source, and the turnover frequency (TOF) reached 31.75 s-1 at an overpotential of 900 mV. Interestingly, the HER electrocatalytic performance remained extraordinary even applying water as a proton source in acetonitrile/water (v/v=2 : 3), with a TOF of 18.40 mol H 2 ${{_{{\rm H}{_{2}}}}}$ molcat -1 h-1 at an overpotential of 900 mV.

Abstract
Two phosphorous (V) corrole complexes, [5,10,15-pentafluorophenyl corrole] phosphorous (V) (PFCorr) and [10-(4-trimethylsilylphenyl)-5,15-dimesityl-corrole] phosphorous (V) (PCorr) were synthesized and tested as nitrite-sensitive fluorophores. Fluorimetry studies on ligand sensitivity towards anions were carried out in solution, then inside polymeric membrane optodes deposited on glass, and finally by functionalized SiO2 nanoparticles deposited on a paper support. The selective fluorescence quenching was registered upon addition of an increasing amount of NO2− ions for both ligands. The influence on the PFCorr optode’s response of the lipophilic sites’ functionalization was investigated. The sensors’ suitability for nitrite assessment in natural waters at levels 10-fault lower than the WHO’s recommended maximum concentration level of 3 mg/L was demonstrated.

Abstract
Two triarylcorrole complexes, (hydroxy)[5,10,15-tritolylcorrolato]silicon-(TTC)Si(OH) and (dihydroxy)[5,10,15-tritolylcorrolato]phosphorous-(TTC)P(OH) 2 , have been investigated by magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and magnetic circularly polarized luminescence (MCPL). The spectroscopic investigations have been combined with explicit calculation of MCD response through time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) formalism. This has allowed us to better define the role of molecular orbitals in the transitions associated with the Soret and Q bands. Besides and more importantly, MCD has made it possible to follow the titration process of (TTC)Si(OH) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution with NaF and of (TTC)P(OH) 2 in dichloromethane solution with alcohols in a complementary and, we dare say, more sensitive way with respect to absorption and fluorescence data. Finally, the MCPL spectra and the ancillary TD-DFT calculations have allowed us to characterize the excited state of (TTC)Si(OH).

Abstract
Main group chemistry is often considered less "dynamic" than transition metal (TM) chemistry because of predictable VSEPR-based central atom geometries, relatively slower redox switching and lack of electronic d-d transitions. However, we delineate what has been made possible with main group chemistry to give it its proper due and up-to-date treatment. The huge untapped potential regarding photophysical properties and functioning hereby spurred us to review a range of corrole reports addressing primarily photophysical trends, synthetic aspects, and important guidelines regarding substitution and inorganic principles. We also look at Ag and Au systems and also consider substitutions such as CF3, halogens, additives and also counterions. Throughout, as well as at the end of this review, we suggest various future directions; further future industrial catalytic and health science research is encouraged.

Abstract
[16]Norcorrole is an antiaromatic ring-contracted porphyrinoid. Here, we show that the phosphorus insertion of the free-base [16]norcorrole switches its antiaromaticity to aromaticity. The treatment of a free-base meso-dimesityl[16]norcorrole with phosphorus tribromide in pyridine afforded an [18]norcorrole P(V) complex, which exhibited porphyrin-like absorption and fluorescence spectra. The phosphorus center adopted a distorted tetragonal pyramidal coordination geometry. The distinct aromatic nature of the [18]norcorrole P(V) complex was corroborated both experimentally and theoretically.

Abstract
Although fluorescent proteins have been utilized for a variety of biological applications, they have several optical limitations, namely weak red and near-infrared emission and exceptionally broad (>200 nm) emission profiles. The photophysical properties of fluorescent proteins can be enhanced through the incorporation of novel cofactors with the desired properties into a stable protein scaffold. To this end, a fluorescent phosphorus corrole that is structurally similar to the native heme cofactor is incorporated into two exceptionally stable heme proteins: H-NOX from Caldanaerobacter subterraneus and heme acquisition system protein A (HasA) from Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These yellow-orange emitting protein conjugates are examined by steady-state and time-resolved optical spectroscopy. The HasA conjugate exhibits enhanced fluorescence, whereas emission from the H-NOX conjugate is quenched relative to the free corrole. Despite the low fluorescence quantum yields, these corrole-substituted proteins exhibit more intense fluorescence in a narrower spectral profile than traditional fluorescent proteins that emit in the same spectral window. This study demonstrates that fluorescent corrole complexes are readily incorporated into heme proteins and provides an inroad for the development of novel fluorescent proteins.

Abstract
Although the affinity of metallocorroles to axial ligands is quite low, this is not the case when the chelated element is phosphorus. This work is hence focused on the mechanism of ligand exchange of six-coordinate phosphorus corroles as a tool for affecting their chemical and physical properties. These fundamental investigations allowed for the development of facile methodologies for the synthesis of a large series of complexes and the establishment of several new structure/activity profiles that may be used to understand and predict spectroscopic features and for tailor-made modification of photophysical and electrochemical properties. This is exemplified by the facile access to complexes with terminal groups that are of large potential for practical applications based on click chemistry, optical imaging, and surface science.

Abstract
The synthesis and catalytic reactivity of a class of water-tolerant cationic phosphorus-based Lewis acids is reported.
The synthesis and catalytic reactivity of a class of water-tolerant cationic phosphorus-based Lewis acids is reported. Corrole-based phosphorus(v) cations of the type [ArP(cor)][B(C6F5)4] (Ar = C6H5, 3,5-(CF3)2C6H3; cor = 5,10,15-(C6H5)3corrolato3–, 5,10,15-(C6F5)3corrolato3–) were synthesized and characterized by NMR and X-ray diffraction. The visible electronic absorption spectra of these cationic phosphacorroles depend strongly on the coordination environment at phosphorus, and their Lewis acidities are quantified by spectrophotometric titrations. DFT analyses establish that the character of the P-acceptor orbital comprises P–N antibonding interactions in the basal plane of the phosphacorrole. Consequently, the cationic phosphacorroles display unprecedented stability to water and alcohols while remaining highly active and robust Lewis acid catalysts for carbonyl hydrosilylation, Csp3–H bond functionalization, and carbohydrate deoxygenation reactions.

Abstract
The photophysical properties of a series of nitrated and halogenated phosphorus tritolylcorrole complexes were studied in dichloromethane solvent by using the density functional theory. Particular emphasis was given to the absorption spectra, the energy gap between the excited singlet and triplet states, and the magnitude of the spin-orbit couplings for a series of possible intersystem crossing channels between those excited states. The proposed study provides a better description of the photophysical properties of these systems while giving insights into their possible use as photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy.

Abstract
Presented herein is a comprehensive account of the electronic structure of corrole derivatives. Our knowledge in this area derives from a broad range of methods, including UV-vis-NIR absorption and MCD spectroscopies, single-crystal X-ray structure determination, vibrational spectroscopy, NMR and EPR spectroscopies, electrochemistry, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and quantum chemical calculations, the latter including both density functional theory and ab initio multiconfigurational methods. The review is organized according to the Periodic Table, describing free-base and main-group element corrole derivatives, then transition-metal corroles, and finally f-block element corroles. Like porphyrins, corrole derivatives with a redox-inactive coordinated atom follow the Gouterman four-orbital model. A key difference from porphyrins is the much wider prevalence of noninnocent electronic structures as well as full-fledged corrole•2- radicals among corrole derivatives. The most common orbital pathways mediating ligand noninnocence in transition-metal corroles are the metal(dz2)-corrole("a2u") interaction (most commonly observed in Mn and Fe corroles) and the metal(dx2-y2)-corrole(a2u) interaction in coinage metal corroles. Less commonly encountered is the metal(dπ)-corrole("a1u") interaction, a unique feature of formal d5 metallocorroles. Corrole derivatives exhibit a rich array of optical properties, including substituent-sensitive Soret maxima indicative of ligand noninnocence, strong fluorescence in the case of lighter main-group element complexes, and room-temperature near-IR phosphorescence in the case of several 5d metal complexes. The review concludes with an attempt at identifying gaps in our current knowledge and potential future directions of electronic-structural research on corrole derivatives.

Abstract
Phosphorus complexes of porphyrinoids such as porphyrins, corroles, [Formula: see text]-fused porphyrins, [Formula: see text]-fused expanded porphyrins and expanded porphyrins can be prepared readily by treating the porphyrinoid with phosphorylating agents such as PX3, PX5and POX3(X [Formula: see text] Cl or Br) under standard reaction conditions. In phosphorus porphyrinoids, the phosphorus is generally high valent [Formula: see text]5 oxidation state and the coordination number is varied from four to six. The insertion of P(V) into porphyrinoids alters the structure and electronic properties of the macrocycle significantly. Specially, the phosphorus binding mode is different from one porphyrinoid to another. The oxophilicity nature of P(V) in P(V) porphyrinoids is very useful to change variety of axial ligands and also helps to synthesize multi-porphyrin arrays by axial bonding approach. This review summarizes the phosphorus complexes of five different porphyrinoids and discusses their structure and electronic properties as well as their applications in the synthesis of more elaborate P(V) porphyrinoid based architectures.

Abstract
This review covers the functionalization reactions of meso-arylcorroles, both at the inner core, as well as the peripheral positions of the macrocycle. Experimental details for the synthesis of all known metallocorrole types and for the N-alkylation reactions are presented. Key peripheral functionalization reactions such as halogenation, formylation, carboxylation, nitration, sulfonation, and others are discussed in detail, particularly the nucleophilic aromatic substitution and the participation of corroles in cycloaddition reactions as 2π or 4π components (covering Diels-Alder and 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions). Other functionalizations of corroles include a large diversity of reactions, namely Wittig reactions, reactions with methylene active compounds, formation of amines, amides, and imines, and metal catalyzed reactions. At the final section, the reactions involving oxidation and ring expansion of the corrole macrocycle are described comprehensively.
