Multifunctional Periodic Mesoporous Organosilicas for Biomolecule Recognition, Biomedical Applications in Cancer Therapy, and Metal Adsorption

Dimercaprol-modified mesoporous silica nanoparticles for efficient removal of toxic mercury ions from aqueous solution

A surface-modified mesoporous silica nanoparticle containing dimercaprol monomers was created utilizing the sol-gel condensation process, using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as the silica source and poloxamer as the structure directing agent. To accomplish this synthesis, 3-glycidoxypropyl triethoxysilane (GPTS, 20 mol%) was incorporated into the silica walls during the sol-gel condensation process, along with TEOS. Furthermore, dimercaprol (DM) monomers were incorporated onto silica surfaces by a ring-opening reaction between GPTS epoxy groups, and dimercaprol hydroxyl groups. The prepared dimercaprol-modified silica adsorbent (MSN-DT NPs) material has been studied using a variety of instruments, including XRD, FT-IR, N2 adsorption-desorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, and zeta potential analysis. The MSN-DT NPs material selectively adsorbs mercury ions, with a high adsorption amount of 125 mg/g and a removal capability of roughly ~ 90% from the original metal ion mixture comprising other competing metals such as Pb2+, Ni2+, Fe2+, and Zn2+. The MSN-DT NPs adsorbent shows recyclable qualities for up to five cycles when treated with an acidic aqueous solution (0.1 M HCl). As a result, the MSN-DT NPs adsorbent may be regenerated and reused up to five times without losing its adsorption effectiveness. The experimental findings showed that the MSN-DT NPs adsorbent may be employed to selectively remove hazardous Hg2+ ions from an aqueous solution.

Synthesis of functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles for colorimetric and fluorescence sensing of selective metal (Fe3+) ions in aqueous solution

The fabrication of red fluorescent hybrid mesoporous silica-based nanosensor materials has promised the bioimaging and selective detection of toxic pollutants in aqueous solutions. In this study, we present a hybrid mesoporous silica nanosensor in which the propidium iodide (PI) was used to conveniently integrate into the mesopore walls using bis(trimethoxysilylpropyl silane) precursors. Various characterization techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), N2 adsorption-desorption, zeta potential, particle size analysis, thermogravimetric, and UV-visible analysis were used to analyze the prepared materials. The prepared PI integrated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (PI-MSNs) selective metal ion sensing capabilities were tested with a variety of heavy metal ions (100 mM), including Ni2+, Cd2+, Co2+, Zn2+, Cr3+, Cu2+, Al3+, Mg2+, Hg2+ and Fe3+ ions. Among the investigated metal ions, the prepared PI-MSNs demonstrated selective monitoring of Fe3+ ions with a significant visible colorimetric pink color change into orange and quenching of pink fluorescence in an aqueous suspension. The selective sensing behavior of PI-MSNs might be due to the interaction of Fe3+ ions with the integrated PI functional fluorophore present in the mesopore walls. Therefore, we emphasize that the prepared PI-MSNs could be efficient for selective monitoring of Fe3+ ions in an aqueous solution and in the biological cellular microenvironment.

Synthesis of Mesoporous Silica Adsorbent Modified with Mercapto-Amine Groups for Selective Adsorption of Cu2+ Ion from Aqueous Solution

In a sol-gel co-condensation, a mesoporous silica hybrid integrated with (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane (TMPSH) was prepared and then reacted with allylamine via a post-surface functionalization approach. Approximately 15 mol% of TMSPSH was introduced into the mesoporous silica pore walls along with tetraethyl orthosilicate. The mercapto ligands in the prepared mesoporous silica pore walls were then reacted with allylamine (AM) to form the mercapto-amine-modified mesoporous silica adsorbent (MSH@MA). The MSH@MA NPs demonstrate highly selective adsorption of copper (Cu²⁺) ions (~190 mg/g) with a fast equilibrium adsorption time (30 min). The prepared adsorbent shows at least a five times more efficient recyclable stability. The MSH@MA NPs adsorbent is useful for selective adsorption of Cu²⁺ ions.

Recent Development to Explore the Use of Biodegradable Periodic Mesoporous Organosilica (BPMO) Nanomaterials for Cancer Therapy

Porous nanomaterials can be used to load various anti-cancer drugs efficiently and deliver them to a particular location in the body with minimal toxicity. Biodegradable periodic mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles (BPMOs) have recently emerged as promising candidates for disease targeting and drug delivery. They have a large functional surface and well-defined pores with a biodegradable organic group framework. Multiple biodegradation methods have been explored, such as the use of redox, pH, enzymatic activity, and light. Various drug delivery systems using BPMO have been developed. This review describes recent advances in the biomedical application of BPMOs.

Hexadecyltrimethylammonium Bromide Surfactant-Supported Silica Material for the Effective Adsorption of Metanil Yellow Dye

The adsorption behavior of an organic dye, metanil yellow (My), from water using micro-nano silica particles (MNSPs) was investigated. MCM-41-like (Mobil Composition of Matter No. 41) MNSPs were synthesized using tetraethoxy orthosilicate as a silica source and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a surfactant under basic conditions. Comparative studies were performed to assess the adsorption behaviors of the organic dye using the as-synthesized MCM-41 before the removal of CTAB and MCM-41, either after one, two, and three times of chemical etching or after calcination. My was adsorbed more effectively from water on the as-synthesized MCM-41 without the removal of the surfactant than on MCM-41 after the removal of the surfactant by chemical etching or calcination. In addition, MCM-41 after removing the surfactant by one-time chemical etching in the presence of hydrochloric acid also showed better adsorption of My from water than MCM-41 after removing the surfactant by further two and three times of chemical etching or calcination. For comparison, other kinds of dye molecules with different chemical structures such as methylene blue (Mb) and rhodamine B (Rb) were also used to check the possibility of adsorption of various dyes by the CTAB-supported MNSPs. To better understand the reason behind the adsorption phenomena, detailed studies on the kinetics and thermodynamics of adsorption of the MNSPs were performed. Excellent adsorption of My was observed at concentrations up to 100 mg L^-1 at 25 °C, whereas the adsorption was lower at higher concentrations of the My dye. Furthermore, enhanced My dye adsorption was observed at higher concentrations by increasing the adsorption temperature. It can be concluded that the MNSPs exhibited efficient adsorption of My, when the MNSPs are used without the removal of the surfactant and any further modifications, suggesting that the surfactant played key roles in the effective adsorption of the anionic dye. The as-synthesized MCM-41 was, however, not a good adsorbent for cationic dyes such as Mb and Rb.

Synthesis of surface capped mesoporous silica nanoparticles for pH-stimuli responsive drug delivery applications

Mesoporous silica-based drug delivery carriers mostly require appropriate surface modifications to improve their drug delivery efficiency and to reduce their adverse side effects. In the present work, we have synthesised mesoporous silica nanoparticles and their surface was covered by using capping units such as tetrathio-maleimide (TTM) via a "host-guest" complexation mechanism for pH-responsive drug delivery applications. The surface-functionalised melamine (Mela) groups on the outer surface of the mesoporous silica nanoparticles act as "hosts" and the surface capped TTM units act as "guests" during the surface capping of the mesoporous silica nanoparticles via the "host-guest" complexation approach. After the encapsulation of cargoes into the mesopore channels, the melamine functional groups were covalently immobilised onto the outer surface of the cargo loaded MSNs and then the TTM units were introduced onto the outer surface of the silica nanoparticles as "gatekeepers" to obtain surface capped mesoporous silica (MSN@Mela@TTM/RhB) NPs to protect the loaded cargo molecules inside the mesopore channels and to prevent their premature leakage. The surface-capped TTM units controlled the drug release behavior with respect to the pH of the release medium. In this study, we used rhodamine B (RhB) as a model cargo to study the loading and pH-responsive release behavior of the MSN@Mela@TTM NPs. The encapsulated RhB molecules were retained inside the mesopore channels at physiological pH (pH 7.4) conditions while an enhanced release occurred at acidic pH (pH 5.0 and 4.0) conditions, respectively. Furthermore, the in vitro biocompatibility and the intracellular uptake efficiency of the synthesised MSNs@Mela@TTM NPs were examined by using the MDA-MB-231 cell line. The experimental results suggest that the MSNs@Mela@TTM nanoparticles are biocompatible and could be utilised for pH-stimuli responsive drug delivery applications.

Chemistry of Mesoporous Organosilica in Nanotechnology: Molecularly Organic-Inorganic Hybridization into Frameworks

Organic-inorganic hybrid materials aiming to combine the individual advantages of organic and inorganic components while overcoming their intrinsic drawbacks have shown great potential for future applications in broad fields. In particular, the integration of functional organic fragments into the framework of mesoporous silica to fabricate mesoporous organosilica materials has attracted great attention in the scientific community for decades. The development of such mesoporous organosilica materials has shifted from bulk materials to nanosized mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles (designated as MONs, in comparison with traditional mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs)) and corresponding applications in nanoscience and nanotechnology. In this comprehensive review, the state-of-art progress of this important hybrid nanomaterial family is summarized, focusing on the structure/composition-performance relationship of MONs of well-defined morphology, nanostructure, and nanoparticulate dimension. The synthetic strategies and the corresponding mechanisms for the design and construction of MONs with varied morphologies, compositions, nanostructures, and functionalities are overviewed initially. Then, the following part specifically concentrates on their broad spectrum of applications in nanotechnology, mainly in nanomedicine, nanocatalysis, and nanofabrication. Finally, some critical issues, presenting challenges and the future development of MONs regarding the rational synthesis and applications in nanotechnology are summarized and discussed. It is highly expected that such a unique molecularly organic-inorganic nanohybrid family will find practical applications in nanotechnology, and promote the advances of this discipline regarding hybrid chemistry and materials.
