Magneto-Luminescent Two-Dimensional Nanosheets of Gadolinium and Gold Nanocluster Assemblies with Surface Molecular Functionalization for White Light Emission

We report the formation of photoluminescent two-dimensional (2D) crystalline nanosheet assemblies of gadolinium ions and ligand-stabilized gold nanoclusters (Gd-Au NCs). Transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction in conjunction with atomic force microscopy, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy analyses substantiated the 2D nature of Gd-Au NC nanosheets. The optical and magnetic properties of the nanosheets were investigated by photoluminescence measurements and vibrating-sample magnetometry analyses. The so-formed crystalline product was further utilized to generate a synchronous tricolor (orange, green, and blue) emission from a single excitation wavelength through an inorganic surface complexation reaction. The independent emissions were tunable after ligand functionalization by acetylsalicylic acid and fluorescein on the Gd-Au NC assembly. Interestingly, the assembled superstructure with augmented quantum yield led to white light emission at λexc ≈ 325 nm with CIE of (0.34, 0.33) and CRI value of >85 in the liquid phase. Furthermore, the ability to modulate the luminescence properties through the surface complexation of the 2D nanosheets of Au NCs may bring about new avenues toward applications in light-emitting devices, sensing, and biomedical imaging.

Targeted Synthesis of End-On Dinitrogen-Bridged Lanthanide Metallocenes and Their Reactivity as Divalent Synthons

High-yield syntheses of the lanthanide dinitrogen complexes [(Cp2tttM)2(μ-1,2-N2)] (1M, M = Gd, Tb, Dy; Cpttt = 1,2,4-C5tBu3H2), in which the [N2]2- ligands solely adopt the rare end-on or 1,2-bridging mode, are reported. The bulk of the tert-butyl substituents and the smaller radii of gadolinium, terbium, and dysprosium preclude formation of the side-on dinitrogen bonding mode on steric grounds. Elongation of the nitrogen-nitrogen bond relative to N2 is observed in 1M, and their Raman spectra show a major absorption consistent with N═N double bonds. Computational analysis of 1Gd identifies that the local symmetry of the metallocene units lifts the degeneracy of two 5dπ orbitals, leading to differing overlap with the π* orbitals of [N2]2-, a consequence of which is that the dinitrogen ligand occupies a singlet ground state. Magnetic measurements reveal antiferromagnetic exchange in 1M and single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior in 1Dy. Ab initio calculations show that the magnetic easy axis in the ground doublets of 1Tb and 1Dy align with the {M-N═N-M} connectivity, in contrast to the usual scenario in dysprosium metallocene SMMs, where the axis passes through the cyclopentadienyl ligands. The [N2]2- ligands in 1M allow these compounds to be regarded as two-electron reducing agents, serving as synthons for divalent gadolinium, terbium, and dysprosium. Proof of principle for this concept is obtained in the reactions of 1M with 2,2'-bipyridyl (bipy) to give [Cp2tttM(κ2-bipy)] (2M, M = Gd, Tb, Dy), in which the lanthanide is ligated by a bipy radical anion, with strong metal-ligand direct exchange coupling.

Synthesis, Crystal Structures, and Spectroscopic Properties of Novel Gadolinium and Erbium Triphenylsiloxide Coordination Entities

In alkali metal and lanthanide coordination chemistry, triphenylsiloxides seem to be unduly underappreciated ligands. This is as surprising as that such substituents play a crucial role, among others, in stabilizing rare oxidation states of lanthanide ions, taking a part of intramolecular and molecular interactions stabilizing metal-oxygen cores and many others. This paper reports the synthesis and characterization of new lithium [Li₄(OSiPh₃)₄(THF)₂] (1), and sodium [Na₄(OSiPh₃)₄] (2) species, which were later used in obtaining novel gadolinium [Gd(OSiPh₃)₃(THF)₃]·THF (3), and erbium [Er(OSiPh₃)₃(THF)₃]·THF (4) configuration, it can result in res were determined for all 1-4 compounds, and in addition, IR, Raman, absorption spectroscopy studies were conducted for 3 and 4 lanthanide compounds. Furthermore, direct current (dc) variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements on polycrystalline samples of 3 and 4 were carried out in the temperature range 1.8-300 K. The 3 shows behavior characteristics for the paramagnetism of the Gd³⁺ ion. In contrast, the magnetic properties of 4 are dominated by the crystal field effect on the Er³⁺ ion, masking the magnetic interaction between magnetic centers of neighboring molecules.

New Coordination Modes for Modified Schiff Base Ti(IV) Complexes and Their Control over Lactone Ring-Opening Polymerization Activity

A series of eight new bis(alkoxy)bis(phenoxy-imine)titanium(IV) catalysts, coordinated by Schiff base ligands derived from o-vanillin (2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde), show good activity and control for the ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone and ω-pentadecalactone. The new complexes are easily prepared in two high-yield steps from commercial reagents. The new ligands can all adopt two different coordination modes, depending on the steric bulk on the imine: a six-membered N-O chelate and/or a five-membered O-O chelate. The complexes show three different structures, depending on the ligand coordination mode: type A (N-O:N-O), type B (N-O:O-O), and type C (O-O:O-O). In all cases, the structures were confirmed in solution using variable temperature NMR spectroscopy and in the solid state using X-ray crystallography. The complex structure influences the polymerization rate, with the catalytic activities decreasing in the order: type C > type B > type A for both monomers. Overall, the work demonstrates potential to use these new ligands to access particular coordination modes, which allows enhancement of catalytic activity.

Solvent-free reaction between lanthanide nitrates and pyrimidine-4,6-dicarboxylic acid led to 3D frameworks with coordinated nitrates showing a photoluminescence improvement and waveguiding behaviour.

Probing the magnetic and magnetothermal properties of M(ii)–Ln(iii) complexes (where M(ii) = Ni or Zn; Ln(iii) = La or Pr or Gd)

We report the crystal structures of Ni(ii)–Ln(iii) (where Ln = Gd or Pr) complexes and their suitably substituted diamagnetic analogues. Magnetic characterization revealed the nature of the magnetic exchange interactions and the magnetothermal properties.
