Solvent vapour-responsive structural transformations in molecular crystals composed of a luminescent mononuclear aluminium(III) complex

Investigations into the construction of functional molecular crystals and their external stimuli-induced structural transformations represent compelling research topics, particularly for the advancement of sensors and memory devices. However, reports on the development of molecular crystals constructed from discrete mononuclear complex units and exhibiting structural transformations via the adsorption/desorption of guest molecules are scarce. In this study, we synthesised three molecular crystals composed of [Al(sap)(acac)(H2O)]·(solvent) (H2sap = 2-salicylideneaminophenol, acac = acetylacetonate, solvent = Me2CO (Al·Me2CO), MeCN (Al·MeCN), or DMSO (Al·DMSO)), and demonstrated solvent vapour-responsive reversible crystal-to-crystal structural transformations in Al·Me2CO and Al·MeCN. For Al·DMSO, exposure to DMSO vapour led to the formation of DMSO-coordinated compound [Al(sap)(acac)(DMSO)], indicating an irreversible structural transformation. This solvent vapour-responsive system incorporates a luminescent mononuclear aluminium(III) complex (λmax = 539-552 nm, Φem = 0.07-0.27) as the molecular building unit for the porous-like framework. Therefore, we synthesised a new functional molecular material and a potential molecular building unit that facilitates guest fixation through hydrogen-bonding.

15N CP/MAS NMR as a Tool for the Mechanistic Study of Mechanical Stimuli-Responsive Materials: Evidence for the Conformational Change of an Emissive Dimethylacridane Derivative

Mechanochromic luminescent molecules are currently attracting considerable attention because of their promising technological applications, but understanding their mechanism of action is challenging and is thus hindering our deeper understanding of these materials. The conformational change of 9,9'-dimethyl-9,10-dihydroacridane derivative 1 was examined using solid-state ¹⁵N nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic techniques without using a specifically ¹⁵N-labeled compound. A difference between the two conformers was clearly observed in the measurements and was assigned to the ⟨pl⟩ and ⟨bf⟩ spatial structures. The results were supported by quantum chemical calculations on ¹⁵N NMR chemical shifts of each isomer. The technique presented here can clearly identify the structural changes caused by crushing a powder sample. Such structural changes are difficult to determine using X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements.

Porous Supramolecular Assembly of Pentiptycene-Containing Gold(I) Complexes: Persistent Excited-State Aurophilicity and Inclusion-Induced Emission Enhancement

We report herein a porous supramolecular framework formed by a linear mononuclear Au(I) complex (1) via the tongue-and-groove-like joinery between the pentiptycene U-cavities (grooves) and the rod-shaped π-conjugated backbone and alkyl chains (tongues) with the assistance of C-H···π and aurophilic interactions. The framework contains distorted tetrahedral Au₄ units, which undergo stepwise and persistent photoinduced Au(I)-Au(I) bond shortening (excited-state aurophilicity), leading to multicolored luminescence photochromism. The one-dimensional pore channels could accommodate different solvates and guests, and the guest inclusion-induced luminescence enhancement (up to 300%) and/or vapochromism are characterized. A correlation between the aurophilic bonding and the luminescence activity is uncovered by TDDFT calculations. Isostructural derivatives 2 and 3 corroborate both the robustness of the porous supramolecular assembly and the mechanisms of the stimulation-induced luminescence properties of 1. This work demonstrates the cooperation of aurophilicity and structural porosity and adaptability in achieving novel supramolecular photochemical properties.

A Series of D-A-D Structured Disilane-Bridged Triads: Structure and Stimuli-Responsive Luminescence Studies

A series of σ-π extended octamethyltetrasilanes, which have phenothiazine, 9,9-dimethyl-9,10-dihydroacridine, or phenoxazine (1, 2, and 3) groups as donor moieties and thienopyrazine or benzothiadiazole (a and b) groups as acceptor fragments, has been prepared, and their optical properties have been studied as an extension of our work. All six compounds exhibited fluorescence in the solid state with maximum wavelengths centered in the range of 400 and 650 nm upon excitation by a UV lamp. Compound 2b showed apparent dual emission behavior in solution, which depends on solvent polarity, and a reversible photoluminescent change under mechanical and thermal stimuli in the solid state. Quantum chemical calculations suggest the contribution of a quasi-axial conformer of the 9,9-dimethyl-9,10-dihydroacridine moiety in 2b to the dual emission in solution and the mechanofluoroluminescence in the solid state, similarly to 1a. These studies provide new insight into the preparation of disilane-bridged triads capable of responding to multiple stimuli.

Near-infrared vapochromism in lipid-packaged mixed-valence coordination polymers

Solid-State Structures and Photoluminescence of Lamellar Architectures of Cu(I) and Ag(I) Paddlewheel Clusters with Hydrogen-Bonded Polar Guests

Two hexanuclear paddlewheel-like clusters appending six carboxylic-acid pendants have been isolated with the inclusion of polar solvent guests: [Cu₆(Hmna)₆]·7DMF (1·7DMF) and [Ag₆(Hmna)₆]·8DMSO (2·8DMSO), where H₂mna = 2-mercaptonicotininc acid, DMF = N,N’-dimethylformamide, and DMSO = dimethyl sulfoxide. The solvated clusters, together with their fully desolvated forms 1 and 2, have been characterized by FTIR, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, TG-DTA analysis, and DFT calculations. Crystal structures of two solvated clusters 1·7DMF and 2·8DMSO have been unambiguously determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Six carboxylic groups appended on the clusters trap solvent guests, DMF or DMSO, through H-bonds. As a result, alternately stacked lamellar architectures comprising of a paddlewheel cluster layer and H-bonded solvent layer are formed. Upon UV illumination (λ_ex = 365 nm), the solvated hexasilver(I) cluster 2·8DMSO gives intense greenish-yellow photoluminescence in the solid state (λ_PL = 545 nm, Φ_PL = 0.17 at 298 K), whereas the solvated hexacopper(I) cluster 1·7DMF displays PL in the near-IR region (λ_PL = 765 nm, Φ_PL = 0.38 at 298 K). Upon complete desolvation, a substantial bleach in the PL intensity (Φ_PL < 0.01) is observed. The desorption–sorption response was studied by the solid-state PL spectroscopy. Non-covalent interactions in the crystal including intermolecular H-bonds, CH⋯π interactions, and π⋯π stack were found to play decisive roles in the creation of the lamellar architectures, small-molecule trap-and-release behavior, and guest-induced luminescence enhancement.

Luminescent Behavior Elucidation of a Disilane-Bridged D-A-D Triad Composed of Phenothiazine and Thienopyrazine

A σ-π extended aryldisilane, comprising a thienopyrazine group as an acceptor fragment and phenothiazine groups as the donor moiety, has been prepared through the introduction of two Si-Si bridges (compound 1). X-ray diffraction analysis determined the crystal structure of 1, and experimental and theoretical approaches investigated its optical properties. Solvatochromic studies revealed the dual emission of 1 in all solvents tested. Compound 1 also exhibited fluorescence in the solid state upon excitation with a hand-held UV lamp, as well as mechanochromic luminescent properties. The packing mode in the crystal structure, variation of phenothiazine conformation, morphological changes between crystalline and amorphous phases are the major factors showing reversible fluorescence under external stimuli. A theoretical conformer study found that 1 exists in distinct conformational groups differing in Gibbs free energy by less than 3 kcal mol^-1 . The conformer in the crystalline state of 1 can promote the complete separation of the HOMO and LUMO between the phenothiazine donor and the thienopyrazine acceptor, linked by the disilane linker. HOMO-LUMO energy transition in the crystalline state is forbidden due to the lack of frontier orbital overlap. Crystalline state emission showed LUMO → HOMO-1 transition (locally excited (LE) state). In the amorphous state, the partial presence of quasi-axial conformers allows intramolecular charge-transfer type emission via energy transfer from dominant quasi-equatorial conformers. The strategy proposed in this work provides important guidance for developing stimuli-responsive materials with controlled excited states.

Mechanochemical synthesis of mononuclear gold(I) halide complexes of diphosphine ligands with tuneable luminescent properties

A mechanochemical method is reported for the synthesis of Au(diphos)X complexes of diphosphine (diphos = XantPhos and N-XantPhos) ligands and halide ions (X = Cl and I). The Au(XantPhos)X (1: X = Cl; 2: X = I) and Au(N-XantPhos)Cl (3) complexes exhibited either yellowish green (1) or bluish green (2) emission, whereas 3 was seemingly non-emissive in the solid state at room temperature. Blue- (2B) and bluish green (2G) luminescent concomitant solvates of 2 were obtained by recrystallization. Luminescent colour changes from blue (2B) or bluish green (2G) to yellow were observed when these forms were subjected to mechanical stimulus, while the original emission colour can be recovered in the presence of solvent vapours. Moreover, the luminescence of 2B can be reversibly altered between blue and yellow by heating/cooling-cycles. These results demonstrate the power of mechanochemistry in the rapid (4 min reaction time), efficient (up to 98% yield) and greener synthesis of luminescent and stimuli-responsive gold(I) complexes.

Synthesis and Photophysical Properties of Emissive Silver(I) Halogenido Coordination Polymers Composed of {Ag2X2} Units Bridged by Pyrazine, Methylpyrazine, and Aminopyrazine

Luminescent silver(I) coordination polymers having a {Ag₂(μ-X)₂} rhombic core (X = I, Br) were prepared using pyrazine (pyz), methylpyrazine (Mepyz), and aminopyrazine (ampyz) as bridging ligands. Photophysical measurements show that the complexes were strongly luminescent in the solid state at room temperature; further, the emissive excited state of the pyz and Mepyz complexes was a triplet charge-transfer (³CT) excited state, similar to that of their copper(I) congeners, whereas that of the ampyz complex was a intraligand (³IL) excited state. The energy of the ³CT excited state of a silver halogenido complex was revealed to be ca. 5000 cm^-1 higher than that of the corresponding copper complex.

Keep it tight: a crucial role of bridging phosphine ligands in the design and optical properties of multinuclear coinage metal complexes

Copper subgroup metal ions in the +1 oxidation state are classical candidates for aggregation via non-covalent metal-metal interactions, which are supported by a number of bridging ligands. The bridging phosphines, soft donors with a relatively labile coordination to coinage metals, serve as convenient and essential components of the ligand environment that allow for efficient self-assembly of discrete polynuclear aggregates. Simultaneously, accessible and rich modification of the organic spacer of such P-donors has been used to generate many fascinating structures with attractive photoluminescent behavior. In this work we consider the development of di- and polynuclear complexes of M(i) (M = Cu, Ag, Au) and their photophysical properties, focusing on the effect of phosphine bridging ligands, their flexibility and denticity.

Green Synthesis of Zr-Based Metal-Organic Framework Hydrogel Composites and Their Enhanced Adsorptive Properties

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising candidates for a wide range of applications due to their high surface area and customizable structures, however, the minimal external hydrophilicity of MOFs has limited their biomedical implementations. Structuring of MOFs within polymer frameworks is an approach used to create hybrid materials that retain many of the MOF characteristics (e.g. high adsorption capacity) but expand the range of mechanical and surface properties as well as form factors accessible. Using this approach, hybridizing MOFs with hydrophilic hydrogels can give rise to materials with improved hydrophilicity and biocompatibility. Here, we describe the synthesis of the first Zr-based MOF-hydrogel hybrid material (composite 3) using a green chemistry approach, in which only water was used as the solvent and relatively low temperature (50 °C) was applied. Using methylene blue (MB) as a probe molecule, composite 3 exhibited greater adsorption capacity than the MOF or the hydrogel alone in aqueous solution at most tested pH values (all except pH 13). At an initial MB concentration of 0.0096 mg/mL (30.014uM) and neutral pH conditions, this new hybrid presented the highest loading of MB among similar materials (MB adsorbed = 4.361 ± 0.092 mg MB/g Zr, partition coefficient = 0.172 ± 0.004 mg/g/uM) and largely retained its adsorption capacity under varied conditions (pH 1-13 and 0.2-1.0M NaCl), rendering possible applications in drug delivery and the removal of tumor contrast agent/dye with minimal leakage due to its broad chemical stability.

A polymorphic pentiptycene-containing gold(I) isocyanide complex: solvent- and conformation-dependent supramolecular luminescence

Four crystalline (pseudo)polymorphs of [Ph-Au-C[triple bond, length as m-dash]N-Phip-OC8H17] (1), where Phip = central phenylene of pentiptycene, reveal that the π-backbone conformation relative to the AuAu bonding axis is important in determining the energy and efficiency of the supramolecular luminescence, which offers mechanistic insights into the luminescence mechanochromism and vapochromism and the solvent-dependent aggregation-induced emission (AIE) of 1.

Solvent vapor-induced polarity and ferroelectricity switching

Vapor-induced crystal to crystal transformation between non-polar [Fe(sap)(acac)(sol)] (H₂sap = 2-salicylideneaminophenol, acac = acethylacetate, sol = MeOH, pyridine) and polar [Fe(sap)(acac)(DMSO)] was demonstrated. It provides an example of switchable ferroelectric behaviour attributted to the structural phase transition triggered by solvent vapour.

Excimer and Exciplex Formation in Gold(I) Complexes Preconditioned by Aurophilic Interactions

Excimers and exciplexes are defined as assemblies of atoms or molecules A/A' where interatomic/intermolecular bonding appears only in excited states such as [A2 ]* (for excimers) and [AA']* (for exciplexes). Their formation has become widely known because of their role in gas-phase laser technologies, but their significance in general chemistry terms has been given little attention. Recent investigations in gold chemistry have opened up a new field of excimer and exciplex chemistry that relies largely on the preorganization of gold(I) compounds (electronic configuration AuI (5d10 )) through aurophilic contacts. In the corresponding excimers, a new type of Au⋅⋅⋅Au bonding arises, with bond energies and lengths approaching those of ground-state Au-Au bonds between metal atoms in the Au0 (5d10 6s1 ) and AuII (5d9 ) configurations. Excimer formation gives rise to a broad range of photophysical effects, for which some of the relaxation dynamics have recently been clarified. Excimers have also been shown to play an important role in photoredox binuclear gold catalysis.

Vapochromic crystals: understanding vapochromism from the perspective of crystal engineering

Vapochromic materials, which undergo colour and/or emission changes upon exposure to certain vapours or gases, have received increasing attention recently because of their wide range of applications in, e.g., chemical sensors, light-emitting diodes, and environmental monitors. Vapochromic crystals, as a specific kind of vapochromic materials, can be investigated from the perspective of crystal engineering to understand the mechanism of vapochromism. Moreover, understanding the vapochromism mechanism will be beneficial to design and prepare task-specific vapochromic crystals as one kind of low-cost 'electronic nose' to detect toxic gases or volatile organic compounds. This review provides important information in a broad scientific context to develop new vapochromic materials, which covers organometallic or coordination complexes and organic crystals, as well as the different mechanisms of the related vapochromic behaviour. In addition, recent examples of supramolecular vapochromic crystals and metal-organic-framework (MOFs) vapochromic crystals are introduced.

An Application Exploiting Aurophilic Bonding and iClick to Produce White Light Emitting Materials

The paper focuses on exploiting aurophilic bonding to produce white light emitting materials. Inorganic Click (iClick) is employed to link two or four Au(I) metal ions through a triazolate bridge. Depending on the choice of phosphine ligand (PEt₃ or PPh₃), dinuclear Au₂-FO or tetranuclear Au₄-FO complexes can be controllably synthesized (FO = 2-(9,9-dioctylfluoreneyl-)). The iClick products Au₂-FO and Au₄-FO are characterized by combustion analysis and multinuclear NMR, TOCSY 1D, ¹H-¹³C gHMBC, and ¹H-¹³C gHSQC. In addition, the photophysical properties of Au₂-FO and Au₄-FO were examined in THF solution. Transient absorption spectroscopy was employed to elucidate the excited state features of the gold compounds. Solution processed OLEDs were fabricated and characterized, which gave white light electroluminescence with CIE coordinates (0.34, 0.36), as seen referenced to CIE standard illuminant D65 (0.31, 0.32). TDDFT computational analysis of Au₂-FO and Au₄-FO reveals the origin of light emission. In the case of Au₄-FO, direct excitation leads to increased aurophilic bonding in the excited state, and as a result the emission profile is broadened to cover a larger region of the visible spectrum, thus giving white light emission. Designing molecules that can access or increase aurophilic bonding in the excited state provides another tool for fine-tuning the emission profiles of gold complexes.

X-Ray and DFT studies support that the red-shift of luminescence from [AuAr(CNPy-4)] (Ar = C₆F₅, C₆F₃Cl₂-3,5) to [Ag[AuAr(CNPy-4)]₂](BF₄) is not due to non-existent Au⋯Ag interactions but to adoption of structures with shorter Au⋯Au distances.

Kinetic Study on the Self-Assembly of Au(I)-Thiolate Lamellar Sheets: Preassembled Precursor vs Molecular Precursor

Molecular self-assembly has played an important role in nanofabrication. Due to the weak driving forces of noncovalent bonds, developing molecular nanoassemblies that have both robust preparation conditions and stable structure is a challenge. In our previous work, we have developed a reversible self-assembly system of Au(I)-thiolate coordination polymer (ATCP) to form colloidal lamellar sheets and demonstrated the high tailorability and stability of their structures, as well as their promising applications in gold nanocluster/nanoparticle fabrication and UV light shielding. Here, we first reported our progress in exploring a robust and green assembly protocol toward ATCP colloidal lamellar sheets in water by allowing the molecular precursors of HAuCl₄ and the thiol ligand to form ATCP preassembled intermediates. In this way, colloidal ATCP lamellar sheets can be prepared in a wide range of synthetic concentrations ([Au]₀ ≥ 2 × 10^-4 M) and at broad assembly temperatures (80-100 °C) with similar high yields (>80%). The assembly kinetics at different conditions are also studied in detail to help understand the robust assembly process. The robust and green synthetic protocols will pave a way for their real applications.

Peraryl Arsoles: Practical Synthesis, Electronic Structures, and Solid-State Emission Behaviors

2,3,4,5-Tetraaryl-1-phenylarsoles were synthesized by utilizing safely generated diiodophenylarsine and zirconacyclopentadienes. The obtained peraryl arsoles showed aggregation-induced emission (AIE), where intense emission was observed in the solid states (quantum yields up to 0.61), whereas the corresponding solutions were very weakly emissive. The optical and electronic properties were examined by experimental and computational methods. It was elucidated that the aryl groups at the 2,5-positions affected the frontier orbitals and the aromaticity of the arsole core. On the other hand, those at the 1,3,5-positions were perpendicular to the luminophore and effective for a restriction of aggregation-caused quenching. Because the lone pair of the arsenic atom has a sufficient coordination ability due to the low aromaticity of the arsole moiety, a gold(I) chloride complex of 1,2,3,4,5-pentaphenylarsole was synthesized. The complex formation caused a blue shift of the emission from the bare ligand. Interestingly, the complex showed luminescent mechanochromism; grinding the crystals with a blue emission (λ_em =445 nm) gave amorphous samples with a greenish-blue emission (λ_em =496 nm).

Highly efficient cold-white light emission in a [Au2CuCl2(P∩N)2]PF6 type salt

In the trinuclear, heterometallic cluster compound [Au₂CuCl₂(P∩N)₂]PF₆ metallophilic interactions give rise to very efficient cold-white light emission as a result of at least two thermally non-equilibrated emissive triplet states (one of mainly Cu → py and the other of Au → py character, respectively) with exceptional spin-orbit coupling and short emission lifetimes, which are competitive to Pt^II- and Ir^III-based emitters.

Unexpected formation of a fused double cycle trinuclear gold(i) complex supported by ortho-phenyl metallated aryl-diphosphine ligands and strong aurophilic interactions

The first homoleptic trinuclear arylgold(i) complex, [Au3(L')2](NO3) (3), based on an ortho-phenyl metallated aryl-diphosphine ligand (L' = o-C6H4PPh(C15H10O)PPh2), has been obtained through a new thermolytic reaction of the corresponding diauracycle, [Au2(L)2](NO3)2 (L = xantphos). The formation of 3 involves activation of the ortho-phenyl C-H bond of the xantphos ligands. The presence of Au-C bonds in this new gold-diphosphine cluster is not its only remarkable feature, since it also displays two 12-membered rings fused together and a linear {Au3} chain with aurophilic interactions. Complex 3 exhibits strong sky-blue luminescence that can be assigned to a triplet metal-metal ((3)MM) transition partially mixed with a ligand-to-metal-metal charge transfer ((3)LMMCT) transition related to the aurophilic bonding. This [Au3(L')2](+) triauracycle also shows AIEE-activity, and is a selective luminescent chemosensor for metal ions.

Gold(I) Alkynyls Supported by Mono- and Bidentate NHC Ligands: Luminescence and Isolation of Unprecedented Ionic Complexes

Reactions of NHC·HX (NHC = 1-benzyl-3-methylbenzimidazol-2-ylidene, X = Br^-, PF₆^-) and (AuC≡CR)_n (R = Ph, C₃H₆OH) in the presence of Cs₂CO₃ initially afford compounds of the general formula [(NHC)₂Au]₂[(RC₂)₂Au]X, which can be isolated by crystallization. With increased reaction time, only the expected mononuclear complexes of the type [NHCAuC≡CR] are produced. The crystal structure of [(NHC)₂Au]₂[(PhC₂)₂Au]PF₆ reveals an unprecedented triple-decker array upheld by a remarkably short (2.9375(7) Å) unsupported Au···Au···Au contact. The mononuclear complex [NHCAuC≡CPh] was found to crystallize as three distinct polymorphs and a pseudopolymorph, which depending on the intermolecular Au···Au distances emit blue, green, or yellow light. Two synthetic approaches were employed for the preparation of a series of dinuclear NHC-ligated Au(I) alkynyl complexes of the general formula [NHC-(CH₂)_n-NHC(AuC≡CR)₂], where NHC = N-benzylbenzimidazol-2-ylidene, R = Ph, C₃H₆OH, C₆H₁₀OH, and n = 1-3. In solution, the complexes with aliphatic substituents on the alkynyl fragment are nonemissive, whereas their phenyl-bearing congeners demonstrate characteristic metal-perturbed ³[IL(C≡CPh)] emission. In the solid state, a clear correlation between intermolecular aurophilic interactions and luminescence was established, including their role in the luminescent thermochromism of the phenylalkynyl complexes. The relationship between the Au···Au distance and emission energy was found to be inverse: i.e., the shorter the aurophilic contact, the higher the emission energy. We tentatively attribute this behavior to a smaller extent of excited-state distortion for a structure with a shorter Au···Au separation.

Dicyanoaurate-based heterobimetallic uranyl coordination polymers

The first series of uranyl ([UO₂]²⁺)-dicyanoaurate coordination polymers and molecular complexes has been synthesized. Reactions of [A][Au(CN)₂] (A = [ⁿBu₄N]⁺ or [(Ph₃P)₂N]⁺ ([PPN])) and uranyl nitrate in alcoholic solvents in ambient light led to [A]₂[(UO₂)₂(μ-η²:η²-O₂)(NO₃)₂(μ-Au(CN)₂)₂], which incorporates peroxo ligands into a one-dimensional ladder topology with alternating aurophilic and peroxo rungs. Conducting the reaction with non-alcoholic solvents formed two polymorphs of a one-dimensional chain, [PPN][UO₂(NO₃)₂Au(CN)₂], from acetone, and a molecular analogue, [PPN]₂[UO₂(NO₃)₂(Au(CN)₂)₂], from acetonitrile, none of which exhibited aurophilic interactions. The addition of 2,2'-bipyridine to the initial reaction resulted in [UO₂(bipy)(MeO)(MeOH)]₂[(μ-Au(CN)₂)(Au(CN)₂)], a one-dimensional structure which propagates via a series of linear aurophilic bonds with pendant uranyl complexes; methanol and methoxy ligands provide additional connections through hydrogen bonding. The addition of 5,5'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine using solvothermal conditions resulted in the one-dimensional ladder [UO₂(Me₂bipy)Au(CN)₂]₂[(μ-OH)₂], generated through aurophilic bonds and hydroxide ligands. The incorporation of 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (terpy) using solvothermal conditions resulted in [[UO₂(terpy)]₂(μ-NO₃)(μ-O)][Au(CN)₂], a molecular salt with no aurophilic interactions. Emission spectra attributable to aurophilic interactions are observed in [ⁿBu₄N]₂[(UO₂)₂(μ-η²:η²-O₂)(NO₃)₂(μ-Au(CN)₂)₂], while all others only show emission typical of the uranyl cation.

4,7-Bis[3-(dimesitylboryl)thien-2-yl]benzothiadiazole: Solvato-, Thermo-, and Mechanochromism Based on the Reversible Formation of an Intramolecular B-N Bond

4,7-Bis-[3-(dimesitylboryl)thien-2-yl]benzothiadiazole (1) and monoborylated derivative 2 were synthesized and their chromic behavior was investigated. Photophysical measurements, single-crystal XRD analysis, and theoretical calculations revealed that an intramolecular B-N coordination bond formed reversibly. The equilibrium of this reversible bond formation depends on the solid-state structure, solvent, temperature, and mechanical forces, and leads to significant changes in the electronic structure and chromic behavior of these molecules. The responsiveness toward external stimuli, resulting in the reversible formation of open and closed forms of this system, is achieved through weak intramolecular B-N coordination bonds induced by the steric bulk of the mesityl groups on the boron centers.

A highly blue-luminescent mononuclear copper(i) complex showed a reversible emission colour change ranging from blue-green to red by vapour exposure of N-heteroaromatics due to a ligand exchange reaction.
