Quenching of Fluorescence in Bodipy-Derived Trifluoromethyl Enaminone Ligands upon Coordination to Copper(II)

Picolinate-appended tacn complexes for bimodal imaging: Radiolabeling, relaxivity, photophysical and electrochemical studies

Based on our previous works involving two 1,4,7-triazacyclononane (tacn)-based ligands Hno2py1pa (1-Picolinic acid-4,7-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-1,4,7-triazacyclononane) and Hno1pa (1-Picolinic acid-1,4,7-triazacyclononane), we report here the synthesis of analogues bearing picolinate-based π-conjugated ILCT (Intra-Ligand Charge Transfer) transition antenna (HL1, HL2), using regiospecific N-functionalization of the tacn skeleton and their related transition metal complexes (e.g. Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺ and Mn²⁺). Coordination properties as well as their photophysical and electrochemical properties were investigated in order to quantify the impact of such antenna on the luminescent or relaxometric properties of the complexes. The spectroscopic properties of the targeted ligands and metal complexes have been studied using UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectrocopies. While the zinc complex formed with HL1 possesses a moderate quantum yield of 5%, complexation of Cu²⁺ led to an extinction of the luminescence putatively attributed to a photo-induced electron transfer, as supported by spectroscopic and electrochemical evidences. The [Mn(L2)]⁺ complex is characterized by a fluorescence quantum yield close to 8% in CH₂Cl₂. The potential interest of such systems as bimodal probes has been assessed from radiolabeling experiments conducted on HL1 and ⁶⁴Cu²⁺ as well as confocal microscopy analyses and from relaxometric studies carried out on the cationic [Mn(L2)]⁺ complex. These results showed that HL1 can be used for radiolabeling, with a radiochemical conversion of 40% in 15 min at 100 °C. Finally, the relaxivity values obtained for [Mn(L2)]⁺, r_1p = 4.80 mM^-1·s^-1 and r_2p = 8.72 mM^-1·s^-1, make the Mn(II) complex an ideal candidate as a probe for Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

3-[Bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino]-5-(4-carboxyphenyl)-BODIPY as Ratiometric Fluorescent Sensor for Cu2

We developed an asymmetric fluorescent sensor 1 for Cu²⁺, based on 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY), by introducing 4-carboxyphenyl and bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amine groups at the 5- and 3-positions, respectively, of the BODIPY core. We then investigated the photophysical and cation-sensing properties of the sensor. BODIPY 1 showed large absorption and fluorescence spectral shifts on binding to Cu²⁺. The fluorescence peak at 580 nm red-shifted to 620 nm. The binding stoichiometry of BODIPY 1 and Cu²⁺ was 1:3. The ratio of the fluorescence intensity at 620 nm to that at 580 nm (F₆₂₀/F₅₈₀) increased with increasing concentration of Cu²⁺ (3–10 equiv); this enabled ratiometric determination of Cu²⁺. Although BODIPY 1 showed good selectivity for Cu²⁺, there was an interfering effect of Fe³⁺. BODIPY 1 could be used for the naked-eye detection of Cu²⁺ in a water-containing sample.

Resonance-Assisted Hydrogen Bonding as a Driving Force in Synthesis and a Synthon in the Design of Materials

Resonance-assisted hydrogen bonding (RAHB), a concept introduced by Gilli and co-workers in 1989, concerns a kind of intramolecular H-bonding strengthened by a conjugated π-system, usually in 6-, 8-, or 10-membered rings. This Review highlights the involvement of RAHB as a driving force in the synthesis of organic, coordination, and organometallic compounds, as a handy tool in the activation of covalent bonds, and in starting moieties for synthetic transformations. The unique roles of RAHB in molecular recognition and switches, E/Z isomeric resolution, racemization and epimerization of amino acids and chiral amino alcohols, solvatochromism, liquid-crystalline compounds, and in synthons for crystal engineering and polymer materials are also discussed. The Review can provide practical guidance for synthetic chemists that are interested in exploring and further developing RAHB-assisted synthesis and design of materials.

Copper(ii) cubanes with a {Cu4O} core and well defined S = 1 ground state

Three copper cubanes with the unusual S = 1 ground state have been characterized and their magnetic properties rationalized as a function of the asymmetry of the {Cu₄O₄} cage and correlated with the Cu–O–Cu bond angles.
