New zeolite made from Tunisian raw clay: study and modeling for C3H6 breakthrough dynamic adsorption onto zeolite material

In this study, Tunisian raw clay (RC) was utilized as a cheap source of silicium and aluminum for the preparation of faujasite zeolite (FAUsyn) using the alkaline fusion technique. The zeolite's structural analysis was carried out using the XRD, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, and SEM-EDX techniques. The data collected demonstrate that the produced zeolite only included one homogeneous faujasite phase. Textural analysis shows that the FAUsyn prepared from RC has a hierarchical porosity (micro-, meso-, and macropores). The total porosity was found to be 0.33 cm3/g as well as the BET area was equal to 360 m2/g. Adsorption experiments for propene capture were performed using the FAUsyn as adsorbent material. The performance of the column was examined in relation to various parameter impacts, including flow rate (50, 100, and 150 mL/min), input concentration (4, 8, and 12 mg/L), and bed depth (10, 14, and 18 cm). Finally, experimental and theoretical studies were investigated to predict adsorption capacities and kinetics parameters. To clarify and estimate column inputs, a model that incorporates axial dispersion, Langmuir equation, and migration within the adsorbent's pore was improved. COMSOL Multiphysics software was used to execute the model and resolve it computationally. The results of the experiments and the expected breakthrough curves were very well agreed. Modeling obtained results can be extrapolated to industrial level.

Evidence of electronic influence in the adsorption of cationic and zwitterionic dyes on zeolites

The adsorption of a cationic dye, Methylene blue (MB), and a zwitterionic dye, 8-Hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ), onto zeolites synthesized from different clays has been investigated. The presence of certain metals and the Si/Al ratio of the parent clay has an overall effect on the type of zeolites produced. Zeolites LTA and FAU Y were obtained using the hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectral analysis was used to study the adsorption phenomena of the adsorbates on the adsorbents. The adsorption profile of MB (Topological Polar Surface Area (TPSA) 43.9 Å2 and 8-HQ (TPSA 33.1 Å2) compared favourably with a Freundlich isotherm with R2 > 0.9 for all the zeolitic materials synthesized. Adsorption capacities of zeolite FAU was significantly different from zeolite LTA for MB removal. The higher adsorption capacity of zeolite FAU was attributed to geometric effects resulting in greater shrinkage in the inter lattice spacing of zeolite LTA leading to a reduction in surface area. Adsorption of the relatively smaller 8-HQ however, did not show significant difference in the two zeolite types. Surface and structural characterization showed that adsorbates/adsorbents interactions were driven by both geometric (inter lattice spacing which imparts higher surface area of the adsorbent) and electronic (electrostatic repulsions through electron back donation from metals in the zeolitic structure) considerations.

FAU-Type Zeolite Synthesis from Clays and Its Use for the Simultaneous Adsorption of Five Divalent Metals from Aqueous Solutions

In this research, a vermiculite-kaolinite clay (VK) was used to prepare faujasite zeolites via alkaline fusion and hydrothermal crystallisation. The optimal synthesis conditions were 1 h fusion with NaOH at 800 °C, addition of deionised water to the fused sample at a sample to deionised water mass ratio of 1:5, 68 h of non-agitated ageing of the suspension, and 24 h of hydrothermal treatment at 90 °C. The efficacy of the prepared faujasite was compared to raw clay and a reference zeolite material through adsorption experiments of aqueous solutions containing five divalent cations—Cd, Co, Cu, Pb, and Zn. The results showed that in the presence of competing cations at concentrations of 300 mg L⁻¹ and adsorbent loading of 5 g L⁻¹, within the first 10 min, about 99% of Pb, 60% of Cu, 58% of Cd, 28% of Zn, and 19% of Co were removed by the faujasite prepared from clay. Two to four parameter nonlinear adsorption isotherms were used to fit the adsorption data and it was found that overall, three and four parameter isotherms had the best fit for the adsorption process.
