Highly Efficient and Thermally Durable Luminescence of 1D Eu3+ Coordination Polymers with Arsenic Bridging Ligands

In this work, bisarsine oxides were evaluated as novel bridging ligands, aiming to develop practical and efficient luminescent lanthanide coordination polymers. We have synthesized one-dimensional (1D) Eu3+ coordination polymers that incorporate bisarsine oxide bridging ligands and hexafluoroacetylacetonate anions. These polymers exhibited a denser packing of chains compared to analogous polymers bridged with bisphosphine oxides. The coordination polymers demonstrated exceptional thermal stability and substantial emission quantum yields. Additionally, the bisarsine oxides induced a pronounced polarization effect, facilitating a sensitive electric dipole transition that yields considerably narrow band red emission. Remarkably, the Eu3+ coordination polymers with bisarsine oxides maintained intense emission even at 550 K. A distinctive feature of these polymers is their heating-induced emission enhancement observed when the temperature was increased from 300 K to 400 K.

Effective photosensitized emission of a Tb(III) complex using a β-diketonate photosensitizer and an oxygen barrier system in a thermally populated triplet state

Photosensitizer design of luminescent terbium (Tb(III)) complexes with narrow bandwidths is important for advancing luminescent materials. In this study, we report an effective photosensitizer model in a thermally populated lowest excited triplet (T1) state during Tb(III) emission. The Tb(III) complex comprises a Tb(III) ion (serving as an emission center), hexafluoroacetylacetonates (acting as photosensitizer ligands), and bulky cyclohexyl group-attached phosphine-oxide-type ligands (functioning as an oxygen barrier system). Emission properties including emission and excitation spectra, ligand-excited emission quantum yields, and emission lifetimes were evaluated in the absence and presence of oxygen. Coordination geometry structures were determined through analysing single-crystal structures. The electronic structure based on 4f-orbitals was estimated from radiative rate constants and quantum chemical calculations. The bulky phosphine oxide ligand not only provides an oxygen barrier system but also induces an electronic structural modulation based on 4f-orbitals, allowing for effective photosensitized Tb(III) emission in a thermally populated ligand T1 state in air.

Luminescent Ln3+-based silsesquioxanes with a β-diketonate antenna ligand: toward the design of efficient temperature sensors

We report the synthesis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic, and luminescence measurements of a novel family of luminescent cage-like tetranuclear silsesquioxanes (PhSiO1.5)8(LnO1.5)4(O)(C5H8O2)6(EtOH)2(CH3CN)2⋅2CH3CN (where Ln = Tb, 1; Tb/Eu, 2; and Gd, 3), featuring seven-coordinated lanthanide ions arranged in a one-capped trigonal prism geometry. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibit characteristic Tb3+ and Tb3+/Eu3+-related emissions, respectively, sensitized by the chelating antenna acetylacetonate (acac) ligands upon excitation in the UV and visible spectral regions. Compound 3 is used to assess the energies of the triplet states of the acac ligand. For compound 1, theoretical calculations on the intramolecular energy transfer and multiphonon rates indicate a thermal balance between the 5D4 Stark components, while the mixed Tb3+/Eu3+ analog 2, with a Tb:Eu ratio of 3:1, showcases intra-cluster Tb3+-to-Eu3+ energy transfer, calculated theoretically as a function of temperature. By utilizing the intensity ratio between the 5D4→7F5 (Tb3+) and 5D0→7F2 (Eu3+) transitions in the range 11-373 K, we demonstrate the realization of a ratiometric luminescent thermometer with compound 2, operating in the range 11-373 K with a maximum relative sensitivity of 2.0% K-1 at 373 K. These findings highlight the potential of cage-like silsesquioxanes as versatile materials for optical sensing-enabled applications.

Pure red-light emitting europium based complexes as efficient UV light converters: synthesis, crystal structure and photoluminescence properties

This paper reports three new crystallographically characterized europium complexes with composition as follows: [Eu(fod)3(L1)] (1), [Eu(fod)3(L2)] (2) and [Eu(fod)3(L3)] (3) {L1 = benzimidazole (bzi), L2 = 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (bath), L3 = 2-(2-pyridyl) benzimidazole (py-im) and fod = anion of 6,6,7,7,8,8,8-heptafluoro-2,2-dimethyl-3,5-octanedione (Hfod)}. The single crystal (SC) XRD analysis shows that complex 1 is seven-coordinated while complexes 2 and 3 are eight-coordinated with the geometrical structures of a mono-capped octahedron and a trigonal dodecahedron, respectively. The NMR spectra of the complexes validate the SC-XRD results in solution. The complexes are stable in solution as no dissociation of any ligand was observed in the NMR spectra of the complexes. The photophysical properties of the complexes in solution, solid state, and PMMA thin films were studied. The hypersensitive transition 5D0 → 7F2 dominates the emission spectra in all phases, showing the highly asymmetric environment around the Eu(III) ion. The bath ligand is found to be the best sensitizer of the Eu ion and hence complex 2 shows the strongest luminescence properties with the highest absolute quantum yield among the three complexes. The CIE coordinate analysis shows that pure red-luminescence is emitted by the Eu complexes in the solid state since the coordinates found in this phase are closer to the standard NTSC 1987 values. The optical band gaps were determined for the complexes and the observed values suggest that the complexes can have possible applications in the field of semiconductor materials.

Molecular Dynamics Studies of the Ho(III) Aqua-tris(dibenzoylmethane) Complex: Role of Water Dynamics

The seven-coordinate Ho(III) aqua-tris(dibenzoylmethane)(DBM) complex, referred to as Ho-(DBM)₃·H₂O, was first reported in the late 1960s. It has a threefold symmetric structure, with Ho at the center of three dibenzoylmethane ligands and hydrogen-bonded water to ligands. It is considered that the hydrogen bonds between the water molecule and the ligands surrounding Ho play an important role in the formation of its symmetrical structure. In this work, we developed new force-field parameters for classical molecular dynamics (CMD) simulations to theoretically elucidate the structure and dynamics of Ho-(DBM)₃·H₂O. To develop the force field, structural optimization and molecular dynamics were performed on the basis of ab initio calculations using the plane-wave pseudopotential method. The force-field parameters for CMD were then optimized to reproduce the data obtained from ab initio calculations. Validation of the developed force field showed good agreement with the experimental crystalline structure and ab initio data. The vibrational properties of water in Ho-(DBM)₃·H₂O were investigated by comparison with bulk liquid water. The vibrational motion of water was found to have a characteristic mode originating from stationary rotational motion along the c-axis of Ho(III) aqua-tris(dibenzoylmethane). Contrary to expectations, the hydrogen-bond dynamics of water in Ho-(DBM)₃·H₂O were found to be almost equivalent to those of bulk liquid water except for librational motion. This development route for force-field parameters for CMD and the establishment of water dynamics can advance the understanding of water-coordinated metal complexes with high coordination numbers such as Ho-(DBM)₃·H₂O.

Thermally-assisted photosensitized emission in a trivalent terbium complex

Luminescent lanthanide complexes containing effective photosensitizers are promising materials for use in displays and sensors. The photosensitizer design strategy has been studied for developing the lanthanide-based luminophores. Herein, we demonstrate a photosensitizer design using dinuclear luminescent lanthanide complex, which exhibits thermally-assisted photosensitized emission. The lanthanide complex comprised Tb(III) ions, six tetramethylheptanedionates, and phosphine oxide bridge containing a phenanthrene frameworks. The phenanthrene ligand and Tb(III) ions are the energy donor (photosensitizer) and acceptor (emission center) parts, respectively. The energy-donating level of the ligand (lowest excited triplet (T₁) level = 19,850 cm^-1) is lower than the emitting level of the Tb(III) ion (⁵D₄ level = 20,500 cm^-1). The long-lived T₁ state of the energy-donating ligands promoted an efficient thermally-assisted photosensitized emission of the Tb(III) acceptor (⁵D₄ level), resulting in a pure-green colored emission with a high photosensitized emission quantum yield (73%).

Perfluoroalkyl Chain Length Effect on Crystal Packing and [LnO8] Coordination Geometry in Lanthanide-Lithium β-Diketonates: Luminescence and Single-Ion Magnet Behavior

Functionalized perfluoroalkyl lithium β-diketonates (LiL) react with lanthanide(III) salts (Ln = Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy) in methanol to give heterobimetallic Ln-Li complexes of general formula [(LnL₃)(LiL)(MeOH)]. The length of fluoroalkyl substituent in ligand was found to affect the crystal packing of complexes. Photoluminescent and magnetic properties of heterobimetallic β-diketonates in the solid state are reported. The effect of the geometry of the [LnO₈] coordination environment of heterometallic β-diketonates on the luminescent properties (quantum yields, phosphorescence lifetimes for Eu, Tb, Dy complexes) and single-ion magnet behavior (U_eff for Dy complexes) is revealed.

Highly Luminescent Europium(III) Complexes in Solution and PMMA-Doped Films for Bright Red Electroluminescent Devices

This paper reports the synthesis, structure, photophysical, and optoelectronic properties of five eight-coordinate Europium(III) ternary complexes, namely, [Eu(hth)₃(L)₂], bearing 4,4,5,5,6,6,6-heptafluoro-1-(2-thienyl)-1,3-hexanedione (hth) as a sensitizer and L = H₂O (1), dpso (diphenyl sulphoxide, 2), dpsoCH₃ (4,4'-dimethyl diphenyl sulfoxide, 3), dpsoCl (bis(4-chlorophenyl)sulphoxide, 4), and tppo (triphenylphosphine oxide, 5) as co-ligands. The NMR and the crystal structure analysis confirmed the eight-coordinate structures of the complexes in solution and in a solid state. Upon UV-excitation on the absorption band of the β-diketonate ligand hth, all complexes showed the characteristic bright red luminescence of the Europium ion. The tppo derivative (5) displayed the highest quantum yield (up to 66%). As a result, an organic light-emitting device, OLED, was fabricated with a multi-layered structure-ITO/MoO₃/mCP/SF3PO:[complex 5] (10%)/TPBi:[complex 5] (10%)/TmPyPB/LiF/Al-using complex 5 as the emitting component.

Eu3+ and Tb3+ coordination compounds with phenyl-containing carbacylamidophosphates: comparison with selected Ln3+ β-diketonates

Materials based on Eu³⁺ and Tb³⁺ coordination compounds are of great interest due to their strong red and green luminescence. Appropriate selection of ligands plays a huge role in optimizing their photophysical properties. Another very helpful instrument for such optimization is theoretical modelling, which permits the prediction of the emissive properties of materials through intramolecular energy transfer analysis. The ligands that allow for achieving high efficiency of Eu³⁺ and Tb³⁺ emissions include carbacylamidophosphates (CAPh, HL). In this brief review, we summarize recent research for lanthanides CAPh-based coordination compounds of general formulas Cat[LnL]₄, [LnL₃Q] and [Ln(HL)₃(NO₃)₃], where Cat⁺ = Cs⁺, NEt4⁺, PPh₄ ⁺ and Q = 1,10-phenanthroline, 2,2-bipyridine or triphenylphosphine oxide, involving the use of thermal gravimetric analysis, X-ray analysis, and absorption and luminescence spectroscopy. We carried out a comparison with selected Ln³⁺ β-diketonates. Possibilities and developments of theoretical calculations on energy transfer rates are also presented.

Luminescent Lanthanide Complexes for Effective Oxygen-Sensing and Singlet Oxygen Generation

Oxygen quantification using luminescence has attracted considerable attention in various fields, including environmental monitoring and clinical analysis. Among the reported luminophores, trivalent lanthanide complexes have displayed characteristic narrow emission bands with high brightness. This bright emission is based on photo-sensitized energy transfer via organic triplet states. The organic triplet states in lanthanide complexes effectively react with the triplet oxygen, enabling oxygen quantification by lanthanide luminescence. Some Tb^III and Eu^III complexes with slow deactivation processes have also formed the excited state equilibrium, thus resulting in the emission-lifetime based oxygen sensing property. The combination of Tb^III /Eu^III emission, Eu^III /Sm^III emission, Eu^III /ligand phosphorescence, and ligand fluorescence/ligand phosphorescence provide the ratiometric oxygen-sensing properties. Moreover, the reaction generates singlet oxygen species which exhibit numerous applications in the photo-medical field. The ligands with large π-conjugated aromatic systems, such as porphyrin, phthalocyanine, and polyaromatic compounds, induces highly efficient oxygen generation. The combination of effective luminescence with singlet-oxygen generation by the lanthanide complexes render them suitable for photo-driven theranostics. This review summarizes the research progress of lanthanide complexes with efficient oxygen-sensing and singlet-oxygen generation properties.

Preparation of photonic molecular trains via soft-crystal polymerization of lanthanide complexes

Soft-crystals are defined as flexible molecular solids with highly ordered structures and have attracted attention in molecular sensing materials based on external triggers and environments. Here, we show the soft-crystal copolymerization of green-luminescent Tb(III) and yellow-luminescent Dy(III) coordination centers. Soft-crystal polymerization is achieved via transformation of monomeric dinuclear complexes and polymeric structures with respect to coordination number and geometry. The structural transformation is characterized using single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction. The connected Tb(III) crystal-Dy(III) crystal show photon energy transfer from the Dy(III) centre to the Tb(III) centre under blue light excitation (selective Dy(III) centre excitation: 460 ± 10 nm). The activation energy of the energy transfer is estimated using the temperature-dependent emission lifetimes and emission quantum yields, and time-dependent density functional theory (B3LYP) calculations. Luminescence-conductive polymers, photonic molecular trains, are successfully prepared via soft-crystal polymerization on crystal media with remarkable long-range energy migration.

Lanthanide-mediated tuning of electronic and magnetic properties in heterotrimetallic cyclooctatetraenyl multidecker self-assemblies

The synthesis of a novel family of homoleptic COT-based heterotrimetallic self-assemblies bearing the formula [LnKCa(COT)₃(THF)₃] (Ln(iii) = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb) is reported followed by their X-ray crystallographic and magnetic characterization. All crystals conform to the monoclinic P2₁/c space group with a slight compression of the unit cell from 3396.4(2) ų to 3373.2(4) ų along the series. All complexes exhibit a triple-decker structure having the Ln(iii) and K(i) ions sandwiched by three COT²⁻ ligands with an end-bound {Ca²⁺(THF)₃} moiety to form a non-linear (153.5°) arrangement of three different metals. The COT²⁻ ligands act in a η⁸-mode with respect to all metal centers. A detailed structural comparison of this unique set of heterotrimetallic complexes has revealed consistent trends along the series. From Gd to Yb, the Ln to ring-centroid distance decreases from 1.961(3) Å to 1.827(2) Å. In contrast, the separation of K(i) and Ca(ii) ions from the COT-centroid (2.443(3) and 1.914(3) Å, respectively) is not affected by the change of Ln(iii) ions. The magnetic property investigation of the [LnKCa(COT)₃(THF)₃] series (Ln(iii) = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, and Tm) reveals that the Dy, Er, and Tm complexes display slow relaxation of their magnetization, in other words, single-molecule magnet (SMM) properties. This behaviour is dominated by thermally activated (Orbach-like) and quantum tunneling processes for [DyKCa(COT)₃(THF)₃] in contrast to [ErKCa(COT)₃(THF)₃], in which the thermally activated and Raman processes appear to be relevant. Details of the electronic structures and magnetic properties of these complexes are further clarified with the help of DFT and ab initio theoretical calculations.

Bright red emission with high color purity from Eu(iii) complexes with π-conjugated polycyclic aromatic ligands and their sensing applications

Eu(iii) complexes emit red light with a high color purity and have consequently attracted attention for development toward display and physical sensing applications. The characteristic pure color emission originates from the intra-4f–4f transition, and the brightness strongly depends on the electronic and steric structures of organic ligands. A large π-conjugated ligand design with a large absorption coefficient has been actively studied for achieving bright emission. The π-conjugated Eu(iii) luminophores also provide oxygen and temperature sensing properties by controlling their excited state dynamics based on π-electron systems. A comprehensive understanding of the design strategy of large π-conjugated ligands is crucial for the further development of luminescent Eu(iii) complexes. In this review, we summarize the research progress on π-conjugated Eu(iii) luminophores exhibiting bright emission and their physical sensing applications.

Seven-Coordinate Tb3+ Complexes with 90% Quantum Yields: High-Performance Examples of Combined Singlet- and Triplet-to-Tb3+ Energy-Transfer Pathways

Seven-coordinate, pentagonal-bipyramidal (PBP) complexes [Ln(bbpen)Cl] and [Ln(bbppn)Cl], in which Ln = Tb³⁺ (products I and II), Eu³⁺ (III and IV), and Gd³⁺ (V and VI), with bbpen^2- = N,N'-bis(2-oxidobenzyl)-N,N'-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)ethylenediamine and bbppn^2- = N,N'-bis(2-oxidobenzyl)-N,N'-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)-1,2-propanediamine, were synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, alternating-current magnetic susceptibility measurements, and photoluminescence (steady-state and time-resolved) spectroscopy. Under a static magnetic field of 0.1 T, the Tb³⁺ complexes I and II revealed single-ion-magnet behavior. Also, upon excitation at 320 nm at 300 K, I and II presented very high absolute emission quantum yields (0.90 ± 0.09 and 0.92 ± 0.09, respectively), while the corresponding Eu³⁺ complexes III and IV showed no photoluminescence. Detailed theoretical calculations on the intramolecular energy-transfer rates for the Tb³⁺ products indicated that both singlet and triplet ligand excited states contribute efficiently to the overall emission performance. The expressive quantum yields, Q_Ln^L, measured for I and II in the solid state and a dichloromethane solution depend on the excitation wavelength, being higher at 320 nm. Such a dependence was rationalized by computing the intersystem crossing rates (W_ISC) and singlet fluorescence lifetimes (τ_S) related to the population dynamics of the S₁ and T₁ levels. Thin films of product II showed high air stability and photostability upon continuous UV illumination, which allowed their use as downshifting layers in a green light-emitting device (LED). The prototypes presented a luminous efficacy comparable with those found in commercial LED coatings, without requiring encapsulation or dispersion of II in host matrixes. The results indicate that the PBP environment determined by the ethylenediamine (en)-based ligands investigated in this work favors the outstanding optical properties in Tb³⁺ complexes. This work presents a comprehensive structural, chemical, and spectroscopic characterization of two Tb³⁺ complexes of mixed-donor, en-based ligands, focusing on their outstanding optical properties. They constitute good molecular examples in which both triplet and singlet excited states provide energy to the Tb³⁺ ion and lead to high values of Q_Ln^L.

Short Radiative Lifetime and Non-Triplet Sensitization in Near-Infrared-Luminescent Yb(III) Complex with Tripodal Schiff Base

We prepared Ln(III) (Ln=Eu, Gd, and Yb) complexes with a tripodal Schiff base, tris[2-(5-methylsalicylideneimino)ethyl]amine (H3 L) and studied their photophysical properties. Upon ligand excitation, YbL showed Yb(III)-centered luminescence in the near-infrared region. While the overall quantum yield (0.60(1)%) of YbL in acetonitrile was moderate among the reported values for Yb(III) complexes, its radiative lifetime (0.33(2) ms) was significantly shorter than those reported previously. We propose that the ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) state mediated the sensitization in YbL. The emission and excitation spectra of EuL indicated the participation of the LMCT state in the sensitization. The radiative lifetime (0.84(7) ms) for EuL in the solid state was rather short compared to those of reported Eu(III) complexes. Our results show that the Yb(III) complex with the Schiff base ligand has two features: the short radiative lifetime and the non-triplet sensitization path.

Enhanced Near-Infrared Emission from Eight-Coordinate vs Nine-Coordinate YbIII Complexes Using 2-(5-Methylpyridin-2-yl)-8-hydroxyquinoline

Enhanced near-infrared (NIR) luminescence from two structurally related heterobinuclear Na^IYb^III eight-cooridnate and heterobinuclear Yb^IIINa^I eight-coordinate (CN = 8) complexes is reported and compared to a nine-coordinate (CN = 9) homoleptic complex. For the heteroleptic complex, [Yb(MPQ₂)(acac)], the Yb^III cation is coordinated to two tridentate 2-(5-methylpyridin-2-yl)-8-quinolinate (MPQ) anions, with a bidentate acetylacetonate (acac) anion completing the coordination sphere. Instead, the heterobinuclear [NaYb(MPQ)₄] complex comprises a total of four anionic MPQ ligands, two of which exhibit κ³-coordination to the Yb^III cation. The remaining two MPQ anions are unidentate toward the lanthanide and form μ₂-bridges via the deprotonated quinolinate oxygens to a bound Na^I cation which is also coordinated to the remaining nitrogen donor atoms. The structural properties of these complexes were evaluated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SXRD), continuous shape measure (CShM) analysis, and ¹H NMR spectroscopy using a diamagnetic Lu^III analogue. The corresponding photophysical properties were examined in CH₂Cl₂ solution by using absorption and emission spectroscopy. For both the complexes, characteristic Yb^III emission is observed at ca. 980 nm, with recorded photoluminescence quantum yields (Φ_obs) and NIR luminescence lifetimes (τ_obs) of 2.0% and 14.0 μs vs 1.5% and 11.6 μs for the [NaYb(MPQ)₄] and [Yb(MPQ)₂(acac)] complexes, respectively. Interestingly, the eight-coordinate Yb^III complexes both have higher photoluminescence quantum yields when compared to the homoleptic [Yb(MPQ)₃] complex, which has a reported quantum yield of 1.0% and a NIR lifetime determined herein of 13.3 μs under identical conditions. These results have been rationalized by considering the overall efficiency of the ligand-centered sensitization process (η_sens = Φ_isc × Φ_eet), together with subsequent radiative (k_r) and nonradiative (k_nr) deactivation of the Yb^III cation. Moreover, the efficiency of the intersystem crossing (Φ_isc) and electronic energy transfer (Φ_eet) processes involved in the antennae effect have been quantified for the new complexes using a combination of nanosecond and femtosecond transient absorption techniques and have been compared to our previous results using [Ln(MPQ)₃] complexes with Ln = Yb and Lu.

Mixed-ligand lanthanide complexes supported by ditopic bis(imino-methyl)-phenol/calix[4]arene macrocycles: synthesis, structures, and luminescence properties of [Ln2(L2)(MeOH)2] (Ln = La, Eu, Tb, Yb)

The lanthanide binding ability of a macrocyclic ligand H₆L² comprising two bis(iminomethyl)phenol and two calix[4]arene units has been studied. H₆L² is a ditopic ligand which provides dinuclear neutral complexes of composition [Ln₂(L²)(MeOH)₂] (Ln = La (1), Eu (2), Tb (3), and Yb (4)) in very good yield. X-ray crystal structure analyses for 2 and 3 show that (L²)^6- accommodates two seven coordinated lanthanide ions in a distorted monocapped trigonal prismatic/octahedral coordination environment. UV-vis spectroscopic titrations performed with La³⁺, Eu³⁺, Tb³⁺ and Yb³⁺ ions in mixed MeOH/CH₂Cl₂ solution (I = 0.01 M NBu₄PF₆) reveal that a 2 : 1 (metal : ligand) stoichiometry is present in solution, with log K₁₁ and K₂₁ values ranging from 5.25 to 6.64. The ratio α = K₁₁/K₂₁ of the stepwise formation constants for the mononuclear (L² + M = ML², log K₁₁) and the dinuclear complexes (ML² + M = M₂L², log K₂₁) was found to be invariably smaller than unity indicating that the binding of the first Ln³⁺ ion augments the binding of the second Ln³⁺ ion. The present complexes are less luminescent than other seven-coordinated Eu and Tb complexes, which can be traced to vibrational relaxation of excited Eu^III and Tb^III states by the coligated MeOH and H₂O molecules and/or low-lying ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) states.

Symmetry correlations between crystallographic and photoluminescence study of ternary β-diketone europium(iii) based complexes using 1,10-phenanthroline as the ancillary ligand

This work entails deep red emitting Eu^III based complexes with a variety of ternary β-diketonate ligands and 1,10-phenanthroline as the ancillary ligand in the system. The solid state structure and spectroscopic analysis has been outlaid in terms of photoluminescence and crystallography. A luminescence quantum efficiency of 50% was obtained for the [tris-(4,4,4-trifluoro-1-chlorophenyl-butanedione)mono-(1,10-phenanthroline)europium(iii)] complexes. Moreover, complexes [tris-(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-heptanedione)mono-(1,10-phenanthroline) europium(iii)] and {[hexa-(benzyl carboxylic acid) bis-(1,10-phenanthroline)di-europium(iii)]-μ-[κ²-O,O'-(benzyl carboxylic acid)]₂} were found to also have quantum yields of 9% and 28% with respective sensitization efficiencies of 85%, 15% and 58%. These results were articulated with crystallographic details pertaining to the nature of coordination and the effect of steric and electronic properties thereof which somewhat impacts the Eu-N bond distances. A symmetry correlation was drawn between the crystallographic data and the photoluminescence data.

Recent Advances on Metal-Based Near-Infrared and Infrared Emitting OLEDs

During the past decades, the development of emissive materials for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) in infrared region has focused the interest of numerous research groups as these devices can find interest in applications ranging from optical communication to defense. To date, metal complexes have been most widely studied to elaborate near-infrared (NIR) emitters due to their low energy emissive triplet states and their facile access. In this review, an overview of the different metal complexes used in OLEDs and enabling to get an infrared emission is provided.

Two molecules, each with pseudo-threefold rotation symmetry, crystallize in the asymmetric unit of the monoclinic unit cell.
